581  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: GLBSE has been closed (Repost from GLBSE.com) on: October 07, 2012, 12:59:08 PM
Note:  This is being discussed on some other topics but I did not see this announcement in here.

This is where it would be nice to have some way for a thread to show up in more than one board. I think the same discussion is happening in Securities, Service Discussion, Project Development, and who knows where else.

All the boards start to become meaningless as soon as you browse the forum using the following link:
Show unread posts since last visit.

And so when you go that link when something major happens, there are 10 threads with the same content! If a single thread could be on multiple boards, it would help that list.

Can you create bitcoins using bacteria  Tongue

some people have used bacteria as micro-reactors to produce electrical power, so in a way, yes!
583  Other / Off-topic / Re: Scientists make gold with bacteria on: October 07, 2012, 12:46:05 PM
From the article:

Quote
Assuming you can actually tell the difference between the two, manufactured gold, if it ever became common, wouldn't be worth as much as the naturally occurring stuff; just as manufactured diamonds aren't nearly as valuable as the ones pulled from the ground.

I think this last sentence is total bunk. It does not matter where the gold came from, or how it was processed, if it is pure then it is just as valuable as any other gold. Because you can't tell the difference.
584  Other / Off-topic / Re: Scientists make gold with bacteria on: October 07, 2012, 12:41:24 PM
Done some calculations myself: 0.6 Wh per gram of gold deposited, very little power needed. However that means that you will have to pass 1000 cubic meters of sea water which takes power or open sea. You could anchor a solar powered bouy with titanium electrodes. would be like having a clamp farm at sea.

Anytime you stick something in the water in the open ocean you have to worry about biofouling. How are you going to keep things from growing on your structure and stopping up the water flow?
585  Other / Off-topic / Re: Akinator doesn't know Satoshi Nakamoto on: October 07, 2012, 12:33:50 PM
I have discovered today, that Akinator from akinator.com doesn't know Satoshi Nakamoto.
Akinator is character from online game, who is guessing the person you are thinking of.
Go and teach him who is Satoshi!

If more people try to get him to guess Satoshi, will he learn over time?
586  Other / Off-topic / Re: Let's talk about how hot Asian girls are. on: October 07, 2012, 12:32:36 PM
When I was in High school, I only went out with Asians. Not because I was picky, I just didn't go out much and I happened to start with a Korean girl and a Bengaldeshi girl. I haven't dated any asians since, now married to a white American girl.
587  Other / Off-topic / Re: What does your username mean? on: October 07, 2012, 12:29:40 PM
misspelling(or spelled as pronounced) of a Danish chocolate drink by the name of Cocio.

So is your name pronounced with an English J, like kok-Joe, or is it like a German J (an English Y), like kok-Yo? And is it a long o or short o (first syllable like English Coke or Cock)?
588  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: MPEx registration fee bumped to 30 BTC. on: October 07, 2012, 12:22:25 PM
Even shutdown GLBSE is better than Mpex.....that is how much the mpex setup sucks.

Plus....the PR person is kind of a douche. Usually PR isn't supposed to be an a-hole (as demonstrated in every thread she takes part).

Hey, MP, I would be willing to work for bitcoin as your PR person. I would not scare away potential investors by calling them names. How about it?

I admit I said some harsh things about MPEx in the past, but there are things to like about what is there. Specifically, the stocks listed there have contracts of more than 20 words. They actually contain information, rather than the just a vague idea of most contracts that were on the GLBSE.

I do think it would be good to have the exchange listed on a separate domain name than the other parts of MP's business.

Out of curiosity, how involved is MP in the asset creation process?
591  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: With GLBSE gone, we can start fresh on new lands. on: October 07, 2012, 12:03:15 PM
Economic activity actually falls to the currency that is being used, and bitcoins isn't a currency recognized by the global world. So your sadly mistaken.

Are you claiming that barter, being economic activity that doesn't use a medium of exchange (or currency), is not regulated (let's say, in the United States)?

Bartering is regulated to some degree by the united states, i am claiming a currency that isn't recognized globally can't be regulated.

Bitcoins cannot be controlled by a government, but the use of them certainly can. By trading in bitcoins you do not escape any regualtions of economic activity. They may be harder to enforce, but the laws still apply. Can I go to Canada and use USD and not pay taxes because the government there does not control the currency? No, that is absurd. Likewise, I cannot get around US law by trading in Euros.

If you are looking for a new place to start, how about setting up a city in Antarctica? You would not have a problem cooling your bitcoin mining rigs there!
592  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: GLBSE - request for next features on: October 07, 2012, 11:56:41 AM
Hmm, having a working site (or even, any news) would be a definite improvement over the current situation.

i liked the uncertainty more. but good catch, working service is much better than no service.

Perhaps it is time or Nefario to lock this thread? I don't think he needs suggestions anymore.

Will IBB continue without GLBSE? Do you have a contingency plan for shareholders?
594  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: Dank Bank Deposits - dank soul guarantee - 1.2%-2.0% weekly on: October 07, 2012, 11:53:00 AM
Quote from: dank
Human evolution is increasing at an exponential rate.

I have been giving this some thought, and to give dank some credit, there might be a grain of truth in it.

Let me explain. Through many technological advances, the human population has been increasing at an exponential rate. Since there is a small probability that any individual will have a mutation, for good or bad or mostly inconsequential, as the number of individuals rises the probability that any one of them will have such a mutation rises. Thus by simple probability we should be getting more mutations.

Another factor is that, due to both technology and changes in our social structure, we as a species are much more mobile than ever before. Simply put, people can migrate more easily now than in the past. This migration allows the mixing of genetic material from one area to another, increasing the likelihood that mutations can be spread throughout the population, and increasing the chances that multiple mutations may be present in any one individual. Most mutations are inconsequential, it is through compounding mutations that a species evolves, since some changes become synergistic to effect great changes.

Thus, to help the human species grow to its potential, we should advocate a worldwide loosening of national borders to allow the free flow of individuals between populations.

(Rules required on-topic statement:) Dank, you are still a slacker and I would only invest bitcoin with you if I could get some collateral and I was high and drunk and bitcoin prices had crashed to early 2009 levels.

I hold bitcoins.

Or alternately, I think the price of bitcoins will go down.
598  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] ASICMINER: Entering the Future of ASIC Mining by Inventing It on: October 06, 2012, 03:54:08 PM
Does anyone really want to send glbse their email address, etc. ?

This might lead to some liabilty.

What a crappy situation.

Doesnt glbse already have our email addresses? that is how you log in...
599  Economy / Securities / Re: GLBSE is offline We will update our users on Saturday. on: October 05, 2012, 02:18:59 PM
was anyone actually making a profit (besides owners of 'companies') in the last few months ?

I have been getting a couple percent a month. Nothing huge, I have been caught by suprise a couple times, but still better than my 401k is getting.
600  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Usagi: not disclosing conflict of interest on: October 04, 2012, 03:37:49 PM
You may want to post some local rules if you are going to take on usagi's approach to business integrity. S/he will be around shortly to abuse you and label you with slanderous malice, you might want to have some fun local rules for posting in place before it does.

Meh, I can take whatever Usagi wants to dish out. S/he already called me a scammer for spreading FUD.
