701  Economy / Securities / Re: New Asset idea, Cambodian rice sharecropping (4% to 6% a year) Feedback wanted! on: September 21, 2012, 03:57:38 PM
If you do this please do not list on GLBSE.

I think GLBSE could be a good place to list even if you have a few large investors. There is no reason shares have to be below 1 btc in price, you could have shares be 10 btc if you want. The GLBSE would then keep an orderly record of who owns how much of the investment, and allow people who invest the ability to sell that investment at a later date.

This shows the beauty of bitcoin. Because of bitcoin, we have the option to invest in a small operation on the opposite side of the globe. It opens the financial market worldwide and allows freedom for your money.

"Sharecropping" has a negative connotation to many people because of the system used in the US after slavery was made illegal, where rich landowners basically continued slavery by having the poor former slaves work the land for no pay. Sharecropping can be much more equitable and viable if the people who work the land get a meaningful portion of the profits. It all depends on how the crop is shared between the landowner and the landworker.

Eskimobob, this keeping track of shares as if you are trying to catch me in a lie is a bit of a joke. Really, don't worry about it that much. And please, the last thing you want to do is start supporting puppet/deprived and factory ^^ I think you're a little smarter than that.

Why do yo think that? I have no reason to think you are a liar. Are you a liar? Are you announcing "news" just to manipulate withe the market? I hope not.
I am writing those numbers down for myself and I do not mind sharing the results with others.

Because what you are doing makes zero sense. Why on earth are you keeping track of the outstanding shares? There seems to be no logical reason. It makes you look a little nuts to be honest. But fine, lol, just could you do it somewhere else? Like make your own thread for it? Thanks...

Actually, what he is doing makes perfect sense. In your OP you said you would be doing an "agressive buyback". By showing the actual change in outstanding shares, he is illuminating what an "agressive buyback" means to you.
704  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoins and the price wall / steps on: September 21, 2012, 02:34:49 PM
Could anyone explain what happened there? I wasn't around when that happened, but did we work out to a conclusion?

Could you please be much more specific; what the hell are you talking about?
705  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin is a Zero-Sum Game - Long-term interest bearing instruments viable? on: September 21, 2012, 02:33:58 PM
Why would I invest in said business with my money to make 2% per year, when I could just keep the money in my pocket and make a certain 3% per year?

Because 5% > 3%. If you are earning a sum of 2% in a currency that increases in value by 3%, you reap the benefits of both.
In a way, yes. But you're missing out on what that investment could have been making had you just held on to the money.  I'll do some maths.

Nope.  You need better maths.  Smiley

If you have X units of something, and their value is increasing by 3% per year, if you don't invest, then after three years you will have a value of X*1.033.  However, if you do invest at 2%, after three years, you will have X*1.023 units, each worth 1.033, for a total value of X*1.023*1.033.

In the investment case, you'll end up with a value of 1.159611, but if you had simply held them, you'd have a value of 1.092727.

The big question here is wether the investment goes up in value or not. Say you loan btc out at 2%, then your math is correct, the investment income is added onto the btc value increase. But if the investment is in a physical good then the currency gain is not added into the investment gain. Whoever came up withthe scenario needs to be a bit more specific.

I know this is a slightly different situation than investing in a company, but consider the following: You have the opportunity to invest in gold using your bitcoins. Let's say you did some analysis and decided the price of bitcoins (in dollars) would go up 3%, and the price of gold (in dollars) would go up 2%. If you invest your bitcoins in gold, after a year the value in bitcoins would have gone down, since bitcoins were rising faster than gold.

The big problem with all this analysis is that the market will react. If the price of bitcoins is going to rise in the future that will get priced in, the more sure people are the price will rise then the faster it wil jump now. I just don't think we will ever have a steady, large deflation; there will always be some risk to holding onto the coins hoping the price will go up,  and so at some point even with deflation there will still be a higher net present value for investing than just holding the coins.
706  Economy / Securities / Re: (TyGrr) TYGRR.BOND-B 0% weekly dividends GUARANTEED! on: September 21, 2012, 01:34:23 AM
Since there is a liquidity crunch, some people are selling off assets at a reduced price. If you had some bitcoins lying around you could pick up some great deals right now.
707  Economy / Securities / Re: (TyGrr) TYGRR.BOND-B 0% weekly dividends GUARANTEED! on: September 21, 2012, 01:13:50 AM
Then when are you gonna disclose your business model.  Smiley

Sometimes its good to have BTC in hand:)   Right now I don't need it as there is a liquidity crunch.

If there is a liquidity crunch, doesnt that mean it would be better to have the bitcoins in hand?

709  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Notice of fee change on GLBSE on: September 20, 2012, 09:01:29 PM
I wish bitcoin companies would start making their announcements on their platforms, and stop using this forum as the primary means of communications with users.

Of course, many people do not have time to check a bazillion different websites for news on every bitcoin business, either.  That's the reason the concept of a community bulletin board has existed for hundreds (thousands?) of years.

But would it really be that hard to put the pertinent information both places, or at least a link to the information?
710  Economy / Speculation / Re: The Great Silk Road Crash of 20** ...? on: September 20, 2012, 03:49:02 PM
I have never used silk road. I have seen several people saying that the majority of bitcoin commerce is on silk road, but I have never seen actual data that backs that up. Does anybody have the daily revenue of silk road? If we could find that we could compare it to the daily volume of exchanged bitcoins and see how much affect the shutdown of silk road would have.
711  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] BTC-GOLD: 100 shares = 1 gram gold bullion on: September 20, 2012, 03:35:52 PM
It's important to define this as troy ounces or we are going to have issues.

Who said anything about ounces? I see measurements in grams.
712  Economy / Securities / Re: Question about creating a new fund in Glbse on: September 20, 2012, 02:27:47 PM
Are you a non-native English speaker? The OP is a bit hard to read due to sentence structure.

This sounds like a perfect use of the GLBSE. I know adding in a layer of bitcoin and share ownership will make the accounting more difficult, but once you initially figure out how everything goes it will not be too much more work.

The one potential downside for investors is that this business will be holding physical assets, and so the share price will decrease as the BTC rises in value. Although, if BTC goes down in value the share price will rise, so this could be a hedge against the BTC price dropping. This will make investors have to consider how much they want to invest denominated in a deflating currency. This general predicament is shared by any company listing on GLBSE, not just yours, so do not be discouraged. I think the price of Bitcoins will stabilize in the future, then investing will really take off, and you may have an advantage by being one of the earliest to list in this market.

Eskimobob is doing nothing but posting accurate facts, something your posts seem to lack. The only reason you would think he is trying to catch a lie is if there is a lie to catch.

EskimoBob: this informaiton is useful, please keep it updated periodically (if Usagi does not post the information themself).
714  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] BTC-GOLD: 100 shares = 1 gram gold bullion on: September 20, 2012, 01:15:56 AM
Do you have an upper limit to the amount of gold you will hold?

How secure are your gold holding arrangements?

Will you be running a bot on the GLBSE market to keep the shares following the BTC/XAU price ratio? Will you be buying back shares? If so, what will the spread be?
715  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] BTC-GOLD: 100 shares = 1 gram gold bullion on: September 20, 2012, 12:58:15 AM

I have one 5 gram bar being delivered. I expect it to come in next week. And pending Nefario's approval the shares will go live on Oct 1.

So is your plan to buy the gold and then sell it as shares, or sell the shares and then use the proceeds to buy the gold? (Your statement sounds like the first one, but I am just checking to make sure everybody is on the same page.)

Will you start to purchase more gold as soon as you sell the first batch of shares?
716  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin shoutout in today's epic xkcd comic on: September 19, 2012, 10:19:49 PM
I remember when I first learned about bitcoins, I saw a bitcoin donation address for xkcd. I am not sure if he still accepts coins, will search later.
717  Economy / Securities / Re: [CPA] [NYAN] [BMF] The Wind Changes Direction -- are you prepared? on: September 19, 2012, 10:01:31 PM
Recent P/E data for 2012 puts the average P/E ratio for Insurance companies (on the low end) at about 13. This recent Seeking Alpha article gives several bargain Insurance companies with P/E ratios between 7 and 10. Using 7 as a very conservative figure, and assuming CPA signs no contracts for the next year, this puts us at a valuation of 11,760 over 52,000 shares -- about .226/share. In other words, 7 times higher. Right now the bitcoin market is giving us a P/E of 1.

So you are saying the expected profit for CPA for the next year is 0.03 btc per share?

In the extremely risky bitcoin environment, an isurance provider is a high risk investment, so a very low P/E makes sense.
718  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin is a Zero-Sum Game - Long-term interest bearing instruments viable? on: September 19, 2012, 09:39:23 PM
...
If you believe that wealth and prosperity result from consumption, you will hate Bitcoin. If, on the other hand, you believe that wealth and prosperity result from production, you will love Bitcoin.

Many will argue, "but you can't have production without consumption" and this is nonsense. I can go produce things without there being a buyer. Yet, I cannot consume things without there being a seller. Consumption is the effect - the result of - production, though unfortunately we live in a world in which people have come to believe the opposite.

@evoorhees
Is it paradoxical that the value of the Bitcoin economy is created by the consumption of Bitcoins?

Bitcoins are not consumed, they are just traded form one person to another. The value of the bitcoin economy lies in the ability of the bitcoins to be transfered in trade for other goods or services.
