261  Economy / Speculation / Re: You guys gonna become paranoid about Ripple on: May 24, 2013, 05:07:18 PM
This is a very interesting thread.

The key learning I think I got from reading this is that the term "Trust" when used in ripple might have beena bad choice, instead one should think of it as "Line-of-Credit", anytime you grant trust to somebody it is like handing them a credit card linked to your bank account.

The proper use of Ripple, to avoid being scammed, is to have Trust to only one gateway, one which you actually trust to redeem the IOUs you receive. That way there is no way for debt to be rippled through your account. Only trust more than one gateway after you are confortable with the system and you know how rippling works.

The benefit in the Ripple system over just using bitcoins directly can be seen in trying to receive and send small transactions quickly. The bitcoin protocol requires fees for unaged coins, while ripple allows funds to be sent immediately after they are received.
262  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-05-23 CNN: Bitcoin more powerful than fastest supercomputers on: May 24, 2013, 04:05:51 PM
The part that stood out in this article to me: $200,000 electricity/day & 60,000 transactions/day. $3.33 per transaction in electricity cost??? Anyone more bored than me care to fact check that? If that is anywhere close to actuality; this is not sustainable long term without a continued rise in BTC valuation. Transaction fees do not cover this cost.

I do not mine. I realize that the block reward justifies the expense, but for now long? Is CNN just way off?  My guess is that CNN is way off. Someone explain this to me.

Thanks.

This seems okay. The transaction fees are supplemented by the block reward, which is essentially the network subsidizing the miners, so each time a block is found everybodies bitcoins become worth a bit less. That is how inflation works, bitcoin is inflating at about 11% per year right now. The price is not going down at that rate because there are other factors, like speculation and rate of adoption which influence the price as well.
263  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Giving 10 XRP to the next 10 members to start a valid Ripple BTC giveaway thread on: May 24, 2013, 01:54:51 PM
I am giving 10 XRP away free to the next 10 members to start a valid working ripple BTC giveaway thread to help test ripple and possible flaws.  Thread must stay up for at least 2 days.

So, you are trying to pay people to spam this forum with Ripple threads? I do not think the moderators will look kindly upon this.
264  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is Ripple a Scam? on: May 23, 2013, 09:35:49 PM
Ripple is just here to ry and destroy btc. Not gona happen!

Ripple is not trying to destroy Bitcoin. In fact, they are working hard to interface with Bitcoins. This is like claiming MtGox is trying to destroy bitcoins, it is just silly.

Ripple and Bitcoin are trying to solve different problems, and they are useful when used together.
265  Economy / Goods / Re: [EBAY] PHOTO of a BFL 50 GH/s Bitcoin ASIC miner (immediate shipping) for sale! on: May 23, 2013, 08:09:04 PM
Wait, are you selling the miner or just the photo?
266  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is Ripple a Scam? on: May 23, 2013, 07:58:47 PM
Ripple is a scam. But is a good investment. It is a scam because it has not open sourced, And allows IOU's and that allows you to easily get scammed.

In the ripple system you can only be given IOUs which are from people you trust. The only reason you should trust an IOU issuer is if you know they will be able to pay you when you ask to redeem their IOUs. For example, I trust Bitstamp BTC IOUs because I know they have BTC reserve equalling the amount of IOUs they have issued, so anytime I send BTC thorugh ripple to them I will have BTC credited to my account on Bitstamp. If you are careful with who you grant lines of trust to, then you should have no problem with Ripple.

Then there is the whole other issue of ripples, XRP, the currency within the ripple system. I would not call it a scam, they have been very open about their plans. If you think that the ripple system is useful, then it makes sense for the people who built it to get some money. I personally would not pay anywhere near the going rate to acquire XRP, I think they are currently overpriced.
267  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Are MtGox withdrawls delayed to artificially keep the Bitcoin price high? on: May 23, 2013, 05:16:55 PM
I am a bit confused lately, is Europe a country now?
It doesnt really matter if its Austria, Germany or the Netherlands, they all belong to the same economic community with the same currency, laws and regulations.
Seems like you need to read up a little on the old continent across the pond. Wink

It just seems like people are not sure whether it is a country or not. If somebody asks what country I live in, I say "the United States", not "Michigan". I asked which country you live in, you said "Euro", is the EU on the same level as the US? In a list of countries by population should we put the EU (500M) above the US (300M), or should we list each state separate (Germany, France, Italy, etc)? Each of the EU countries still has their own seats at the UN, are they going to be combined at some point to just have on UN seat and one team at the olympics?
268  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Are MtGox withdrawls delayed to artificially keep the Bitcoin price high? on: May 23, 2013, 05:02:00 PM

... tell us in which country you are located?

btce = no way to get your money out + russia
bitstamp = slovenia
btcchina = see btce
dwolla = really???

Is there something wrong with Slovenia?

To pick an exchange, you really have to chose from the ones which are set up to interface with your local banking system. For us to help you find such, you will have to tell us in which country you are located?

Could you be a bit more wordy, I have no idea what concept or reaction you are trying to convey with "dwolla = really???", is it surprise that such an amazing thing exists or sarcastic dismissal of the whole idea?

Actually, you were not very explicit when you asked if there were any alternatives to MtGox, which features of MtGox did you use?
270  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Are MtGox withdrawls delayed to artificially keep the Bitcoin price high? on: May 23, 2013, 04:04:39 PM
Why is anybody still using MtGox?
What alternative is there?

To see what markets people are using, http://bitcoincharts.com/markets/

You could also trade with localbitcoins or over #bitcoin-otc on IRC

If you previously used [USD--Dwolla--MtGox], you could switch to [USD--CoinBase] or [USD--Dwolla--CampBX].
271  Other / Meta / Re: Ripple trying to take over the Bitcoin Discussion thread on: May 23, 2013, 03:59:06 PM
Even cash is debt; that's why they are Federal Reserve Notes, representing an IOU from the government to you.

And Bitcoin, big surprise is pegged to them. It's a closed system folks.

Could you go into more detail on how bitcoins are pegged to USD? I look at bitcoincharts.com and I see that the exchange rate between the two floats around with great volatility, just about as far from pegged as one can be!
272  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Are MtGox withdrawls delayed to artificially keep the Bitcoin price high? on: May 23, 2013, 03:21:00 PM
So you are saying that if i have $1000 to buy bitcoins and bitcoin price is $1 (1000btc bought fee is 50btc=$50) then mtgox will get less fee than if price would be $100 per btc (10btc bought fee 0,5btc=$50)? You missed math lessons or what?

For somebody trying to teach a math lesson, you should really check yours first. A $1000 USD purchase of bitcoins with a fee of 0.5% would yield a total fee of $5, not $50. Your intended point is valid, the fee in USD is the same if the amount traded in USD is the same.
273  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Are MtGox withdrawls delayed to artificially keep the Bitcoin price high? on: May 23, 2013, 03:17:12 PM
Why is anybody still using MtGox? They are embroiled in all sorts of legal troubles, I would not consider any money left with them safe because they might disappear at any moment.
274  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple Starter Loans on: May 23, 2013, 02:57:22 PM
Looking at some of bitcoinbear's posts shows no sign of the type of thing I incorrectly assumed by his participation in the BTC/TF thing and trusting TF (which is still unwise; I strongly advise him to review his trust settings; his current settings are akin to mis-configuring his firewall). As for my initial post to this topic, as the saying goes, "ass-u-me" and you make an ass of u and me. Smiley

Yeah, I am curious of how Ripple will turn out and I think it will be useful in some situations, and I think Ripple and Bitcoin are complementary, but I am not a Ripple cheerleader like some people on the forum.

TradeFortress didn't send me any BTC (maybe I was too late?), I have removed my trust from him, and I suggest to anybody else who extended him trust that they remove it as well.
275  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple Starter Loans on: May 23, 2013, 02:50:50 PM
You can totally send me some ... doubt i will pay it back but sure send me all you can  Grin

Also when you send your goons to collect, I live a 1600 pennsylvania ave, Washington DC

So ... you are admitting to being a scammer?
276  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk needs to evolve on: May 23, 2013, 02:40:09 PM
I like the forum how it is, but I have been using it for a couple years so I am pretty comfortable with its quirks. I try to go to other forums, and I get frustrated because thing are not where I expect them to be.

There has been a gradual improvement of the forum over the years. The board structure is pretty good for keeping things organized, and using the "ignore board" feature cuts out much of the stuff you do not want. Having the auction subforum not allow edits made auctions improved greatly.

The quality of discourse here is directly related to the quality of posters. Idiots come and go, but if you pay attention there are a few forum members who usually have intelligent things to say.

I like to check the "show unread posts" link at the top of the page, interesting, pertinent discussions will stay up there for a while, useless posts die away quickly (usually).

277  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Trade by yourself! Avoid middleman! Ripple -Buying/selling XRP-Noob guide on: May 23, 2013, 02:28:00 PM
I still need some 100+ XRP to start trading. Anyone kind enough to spare?

Check out my thread "Ripple Starter Loans", if that interests you: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=210509.0
278  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple Starter Loans on: May 23, 2013, 02:24:33 PM
I could use some XRP to get started. I thought I read that the requirement had been lowered to 100 XRP but someone sent me 100 XRP and it says I need 200 XRP to use Ripple.

If you could lend me 100 XRP that would be great.

XRP loaned to Pzi4nk and returned.

Very interested!

Marbit, if you still want the starter loan, I will send later today.
279  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: XRP cross-currency Trading on: May 22, 2013, 07:30:50 PM
I have been doing a little micro-trading of those Rips (XRP) over @ Ripple.com and as other users know, it is mediated through the BitStamp website, which is a fabulous platform for trading BitCoins...I was just wondering if anyone knew of any other sites that are working with Ripple to enable trading of other currencies with XRP??
Surley, this is going to be possible in the very near future.

You can use WeExchange.co for USD and AUD, I believe.
280  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple XRP on: May 21, 2013, 07:28:46 PM
Please people think long term when considering supporting ripple.

Do you actually care about cryto currency and the philosophy backing it?

Or do you just care about making as much money as you can regardless of what kinda world becomes of it?

Can't I care about both? I like to make money, and I like cryptocurrencies which help keep that money free (as in freedom).
