Evolve, why would you buy a AK-47 manufactured in America?

Wait, is this THE Atlas? You got unbanned?

Would solar power give a return on investment on the power costs? Also, do LED lights offer any benefits in the real world? I hear all kinds of claims for them and it's hard to filter out the snake oil merchants Smiley

I would think LED lights would have a different spectrum which might not match up with the optimal for plants. Maybe you could engineer an LED light to the absorption wavelength of chlorophyl? You would essentially have the most efficient grow light!

The question to ask first is.. "what is the mission?"
Are we storming a city building or taking pot shots at each other in the desert. The right weapon is subject to a variety of factors, most importantly the engagement range.
Overall I would want the G3. I have an AK and a very good RECCE AR-15 on back order. But the fact is that military gun contracts go to the low bidder, not the best gun. For example the G36 or the Steyr Aug are great mil weapons that few armies can afford. I think Saudi Arabia still uses the Steyr, but then they use a Lamborghini made vehicle for their transport jeep. (no kidding)

You could probably say the best rifle is the one which is useful in the most situations.

Much better title, thanks for changing it.

I would recommend having one person from the project sell bonds, i.e. make a very large personal loan with many many smaller investors, and then as the single person invest the funds. You don't need a market to do this.

Thinking about it some more, we wouldn't even be able to allow pass through bonds, due to the danger of being taken down as a source of funding for federally illegal drugs production.

Nefario.

Could one person offer bonds and hint hint nudge nudge wink wink, invest the procedes into a "high return business" thus bypassing the restrictions, or by asking this question am I ruling that possibility out for everybody?

I am now a shareholder!  Cheesy  Looks like this discussion has been bad for the share price, somebody filled my lowball order.

I for one, thing that this is a useful thread. I don't have anything to contribute though. Is there a thread of particularly reputable BTC users? Might also be useful (and might invoke less acrimony!).

That's a great idea, I'll keep my eye open for those who seem to be the most reputable and if no one else beats me to it I will start a thread when I have a few names...

A few names for the GOOD USERS thread, if one gets started, in no particular order:

Patrick Harnett

Goat, he does what he says, but you have to make sure you read the fine print because it might say he is taking all your money. Cheesy

Nefario, despite the nefarios handle, he runs the GLBSE and is one of the most trusted and respected members of the forum.

Theymos (do we get extra points for sucking up to the admins?)

More binary showed up this morning.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/4ruxz4

The password protected .rar file looks clean and contains:

2007.pdf
2008.pdf
2009.pdf
2010.pdf

I tried a few passwords but nothing. Don't have time to keep trying right now.

Are these the encrypted returns from 07-10 the hacker says he will release the password to?

Good luck to you Sir!

If I were you I'd change the thread title though... I was pretty sure I was clicking on yet another Pirate Piss Take thread.

I also second the idea of developing a bitcoin payment system for dispensaries, and would be keen to help anyone who takes up the challenge. Fuck the banks and their hypocrisy. They're happy to facilitate all sorts of morally dubious ventures, yet helping the sick is too much for them?

I agree the title is crap, and should be more descriptive.

Bitcoins provides the perfect solution to the problem these people are facing. I would also say that now everybody knows they will have large amounts of cash on hand, so they will continue to be targets for theft, as well as anybody going in/out who must be carrying cash as well. Switching to bitcoins would reduce that risk.
829  Other / Off-topic / Re: Which is the BEST military rifle? on: September 09, 2012, 05:47:49 PM
Obv only three guns, Primary, Secondary, Last resort
Longrange Assualt Rifle
CQB gun like an smg or shotgun
Pistol, Always carry a pistol

Rifle on the back, Smg along the leg, Pistol at the hip, Ammo on the belt and vest aswell as other leg

OK, this makes sense. I suppose you leave the sniper rifle at home and switch it out for the assault rifle when you are going on a mission where you need it.
830  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: amazon payments account? on: September 09, 2012, 04:58:47 AM
yea i just looked more into it....i can either purchase something on amazon.com  convert my money into an amazon gift card(usable only by me, which seems pretty stupid) or deposit the funds into my bank account.   so i guess bank account to cash to bitinstant to bitcoin is the only way to go.

What is the point of a gift card if you cant give it to somebody else? That doesn't make any sense. Maybe you should check that again. If you can get a gift code, you could sell it for bitcoins, lots of people do that here. (I fill up my kindle by trading bitcoins for amazon gift credits)

The thing about Atlas is he no longer uses that name. He keeps coming back as a new user and starting over when people discover who he is. Check out the "Hunting Atlas" thread, I think it is in off-topic, where people identify each of his new usernames. So having the name Atlas on the list does not help any new users, since they will never run into the user "Atlas".
832  Other / Off-topic / Re: Pirat Eat 40 on: September 09, 2012, 04:34:00 AM
Am I the only one who is consistently reading his user name this way? It's driving me nuts!

I always see it as "Pirate eat 40" too. Not sure why that drives you nuts? I do wonder of what he is eating 40?
833  Other / Off-topic / Re: Geek jokes on: September 09, 2012, 04:31:44 AM
True Story:

A couple weeks ago I was talking with a co-worker who was retiring. Over the course of his career he has studied the catalytic properties of many transition metals, especially chromium, magnesium, iron, molybdenum, ruthenium, tungsten, rhenium and osmium. If you check the periodic table, these eight elements surround technetium. So he says to me "I've been studying all these elements as catalysts, and I think technetium must be the best catalyst for everything. In fact, that is why there is no naturally occurring technetium. The aliens took it all."

The more that I learn about investing in Bitcoin mining businesses the less rational it seems. A stock or bond should pay a dividend and hold it price relatively well, or it should pay no dividends and rise in price accordingly so the investor can sell it at a profit. Why is what should be so simple so complicated when it comes to Bitcoin-related investments?

The thing is, it seems to me many of these "mining companies" were just set up as a way for the "CEO/operator" to get a bunch of mining hardware by using other peoples money and thus have no risk, thus the assets were not set up with the investor's best interest in mind. Investing in these is high risk/low return. In the end, a fixed hash rate will go down in value until the difficulty stops growing, which will not be any time soon.

That is not to say they are all bad. Some are set up as companies that will grow to stay competitive.

https://glbse.com/asset/view/BITCOINTORRENTZ and https://glbse.com/asset/view/IBB  arent verified at all but they shouldnt lose value and they pay regular dividends and they have room for growth.

I second this sentiment. These are possibly the two oldest companies on the GLBSE. They will not give a great return (when compared with other bitcoin investments) but I would say they are low risk (relatively). Plus, they are not involved in mining so it is a way to diversify your holdings.

BitcoinTorrentz in particular was a great innovation, a way to utilize the properties of Bitcoin to solve a particular problem.

Buying gold/platinum would not be my pick as those assets are basically pegged to the exchange rate. So this would not actually generate revenue in fiat in my mind.

Buying physical gold/platinum would expose you to exchange rate. If I understand correctly, buying any of the GLBSE assets GOLD, SILVER, PLATINUM, or RAREEARTH does not expose you to such, these are essentially bonds secured by a holding of the named metal. If you believe the operator that he does in fact have such an amount of metal in his vault, then this would be less risky than an unsecured bond. See this thread for an explaination https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=79993.msg1160562#msg1160562
835  Other / Off-topic / Re: Romney tax returns being ransomed for $1,000,000 worth of bitcoins on: September 09, 2012, 03:02:06 AM
Well, the crowd has spoken....

3.02277788 BTC in favor of FULL RELEASE....vs...... 0.59386764 BTC in favor of STOPPING RELEASE.

Compared to the ~100,000 needed to complete either, these are both essentially 0. But we still have a few weeks left, so those numbers could go up.

How much of this is from the coded messages sent using the bitcoin amount as binary code?
836  Other / Off-topic / Re: Which is the BEST military rifle? on: September 09, 2012, 02:54:03 AM

My favorite battle rifle has far more to do with the round it chambers, than the overall rifle itself. I am a sucker for 7.6x51/.308 for anything over 50 yards.
Inside of 50 yards, I would simply carry a submachine gun that shared a round with my pistol.

I would only need 2 rounds to fight....lol. I just would stock up on 7.62x51/.308 for my long and medium range rifles and 45cal for my 1911s and submachine guns Wink

So, when you go out on patrol you are carrying 4 guns, a bolt-action .308 sniper rifle for long range, a .308 assault rifle for medium range, a .45 submachine gun for short range, and a .45 pistol for backup? Are you going to grab a shotgun too for when you enter rooms?  Tongue

Today's daily coupon has been paid @ 1% of IPO price.

Thank you.

Maybe you should use the term "face value" instead of "IPO price"? Or is there a better term?

Original M1 chambering 30.06 ..... or M14 w/7.62x51 (7.62 NATO).

Everyone can keep their AK-47s.....

No vote for the M1 Garand? I am confused, why comment but not vote?

Because there are a bunch of Internet Kids under the impression that the M1 was a 7.62x51 Rifle....I SAID ORIGINAL M1.

I don't think I have ever seen a 7.62 M1? As far as I know they have always been 30.06, the M-14 was the first rifle to go to standardized NATO 7.62, right?

Just to be clear, I will add 30.06 to the poll.

BTC seems to be holding steady, after the 35% crash, in the 10-11 range.

It was not a crash, but a sudden spike which was quickly corrected.
