How many bitcoins you selling it for? (I can't look at the listing ATM, my work computer is blocked form the listing because it apparently has something to do with "guns")
282  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple XRP on: May 21, 2013, 04:45:10 PM
people have been giving it out for free. how do i get rid of it? it is a scam and i just want to dump it back to them ASAP

Go into the Ripple Client, go to "advanced", then "trade", set your currency issuer to "Bitstamp" (I think the address is around somewhere ...), then create an offer to buy BTC or USD for XRP, after that fills you can withdraw the BTC or USD to Bitstamp.
283  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / When was/will be the first bitcoin bribe? on: May 21, 2013, 04:40:44 PM
For all the people who want bash bitcoins, they like to point out how bitcoins are used to buy drugs and other illegal things. One obvious exploitation of the anonymity of bitcoins is to bribe government officials. I was just wondering if anybody has managed to do this yet (please do not admit to doing this yourself Wink ) or if not, when you think it will first happen?

Apparently US Senators Chuck Schumer and Rand Paul have both heard of bitcoins, but what percent of politicians even know what they are yet?
284  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple XRP on: May 21, 2013, 04:29:54 PM
i think governments and banksters will push ripple because its way more easy to crontroll (because of centralized and not open...)

Wikipedia says there are 100 billion XRP  "Premine" created at startup,
because of this im wondering why anyone would ever be willing to pay 1 USD for XRP.
sorry but it sound realy realy stupid to me.

I barely know about ripple, but i cant see the point why anyone should invest time and or money in something like ripple.

If you think the market value of all ripples is greater than 100 billion dollars, then it makes sense to pay 1 USD per XRP. Considering that they were giving away 40000 to anybody who asked, for free, I just do not see XRP as ever being worth that much. I could be wrong.

If you think about the Ripple system, and the way it allows credit between peers and transfer of value across the globe, I am sure you will be able to come up with some situation in which it could potentially be useful. Just like with Bitcoin, as more people have creative ideas the possible use cases will only increase.

Maybe you should do some reading about LETS systems and the concepts behind Ripple, and then come to this particular implementation of Ripple. Imagine a situation where you are in a poor neighborhood, there are a bunch of unemployed people and nobody has any money. These people have lots of time on their hands and could be doing things for each other, but since they don't have money they can't pay each other. Now imagine they start using ripple, now even though they don't have money they can start trading using the IOUs and jump start their local economy. Or something like that.
285  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Trade by yourself! Avoid middleman! Ripple -Buying/selling XRP-Noob guide on: May 21, 2013, 04:13:51 PM
Mah87, I registered a Bitstamp account to do what you're describing but I am confused.

Do I trade XRP for BTC within Ripple, and then transfer the BTC from Ripple -> Bitstamp?

If that's the case, why can't I just trade Ripple for BTC within Ripple then send to my own wallet address?

Can the Ripple account hold BTC and XRP at the same time?

Can the Bitstamp account hold XRP and / or BTC?

There are no plain old BTC within ripple, so you cannot send directly to your bitcoin address. When people put btc "into ripple" there is always somebody holding the bitcoins, for example Bitstamp.

Ripple accounts can hold XRP, BTC-IOUs, USD-IOUs, whatever other IOU currency you want to use. The only "real" currency in the ripple account is the XRP, all the rest are just IOUs from another user.

'First time is free' method to introduce a scam loansharking currency for idiots. I like your methods sir! If I was interested in owning closed source, scam currency virtual debt I would totally bite!

Ummmm, I don't understand? I know on this forum everybody is looking out for scammers, but how am I scamming anybody? It is not exactly free, but it is not loan-sharking either. I am offering a friendly service to let people borrow some XRP so they can start using Ripple. 'First time is free' implies there will be a second time, and as far as I know people only need to borrow XRP once to get started, they will never need a starter loan again.

This thread is not about the pros or cons of Ripple or XRP, if you want to talk about those things please go to the proper thread, there are plenty to chose from.

I do wonder if I posted in the right board, this thread is about loaning XRP, so I figured it would fit in Alt-Currencies, but now that I think about it, it is also about loaning, so that would go into the lending section? Should I move it?
287  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple Starter Loans on: May 21, 2013, 02:30:45 PM
Haven't used the service yet. Still kind of confused.

I see you posted in the "Ripple Giveaway" thread, did you not get any then?

Feb 28 22:01:10 UTC Payment from [redacted] 300 XRP
Mar  1 00:49:30 UTC Payment from OpenCoin 40000 XRP
Mar  1 18:43:40 UTC Payment from OpenCoin 40000 XRP

I assume a glitch in their forum scrapping bot double paid you. Not your fault if their bot screws up (unless you were double posting, I didn't bother to check; their bot should have ignored any duplicate posts tho).

Eh, that's funny. I am not sure why they gave me double, maybe they just like my name?

I could use some XRP to get started. I thought I read that the requirement had been lowered to 100 XRP but someone sent me 100 XRP and it says I need 200 XRP to use Ripple.

If you could lend me 100 XRP that would be great.

Sure, I'll spot you some as soon as I get to my other computer. For some reason on this computer when I go to the Ripple website and log in I can only see my contacts, nothing else shows up. Anybody know how to fix that?
289  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple Starter Loans on: May 20, 2013, 02:03:42 PM
Given that you don't know how much XRP is needed to start an account, that your account only has 800 XRP in it[1] and has barely been used[2], and that don't know better than to participate in foolishly trusting an untrustworthy source (while also trusting another participant in that for 100 BTC more while also trusting Bitstamp)... I'd hope no one would trust you with anything Ripple related. But the one (only) thing that "experiment" showed was that are people who will trust anyone.

[1] Could have anther account with an XRP for loans out I suppose.
[2] Other than to ditch/sell the OpenCoin give-away XRP (which he somehow received twice)

First of all, I am offering to trust people as an experiment to see if this is viable, I am not asking anybody to trust me.

I was just asking about the amount needed because I was not sure if they had lowered it, I seem to remember reading somewhere that the minimum amount was being lowered.

I did not receive give-away XRP twice, why would you think that?
290  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / [XRP] Ripple Starter Loans on: May 19, 2013, 11:16:21 PM
I am willing to give out starter loans of XRP so people can start using the system. Once you get the XRP you can access the trust and trade functions, so you can deposit BTC to your account using a gateway and purchase XRP, which you would send back to me.

I believe people need 350 XRP to start, correct me if I am wrong?

If anybody wants to give me tips my Ripple address is listed below. If you want to add to the XRP starter loan fund, that is where you could send XRP as well.

How do I make the tritium vials in my watch glow brighter?

Would my watch register on a gieger counter?

What's the most interesting thing about Chemistry?

I am honestly not sure how you would make your watch glow brighter. I will have to look into that. I will also look into the watch and the geiger counter.

The most interesting thing about chemistry? Depends on who you ask. I like the part of chemistry where you make useful stuff, which is probably why I ended up as a synthetic organic chemist. (Right now at work I am working on making OLED materials for displays, polyurethane adhesives for constructing cars, and a couple of compounds for agricultural use.)

Is breathing helium bad for you?

What's the heavy gas that makes your voice deep?

Breathing helium is only bad in the way it reduces the amount of oxygen you get. If you only breath helium for a long enough time you will pass out and then die. But taking a breath of helium out of a balloon to make your voice sound funny will not hurt you.

The gas that lowers your voice is sulfur hexafluoride. (actually there are other gasses which will work, but this is the one people use because it will not harm you.) Helium raises the voice because it is lighter than air, molecular weight of 4 instead of 32 (oxygen) and 28 (nitrogen). Sulfur hexafluoride has a molecular weight of 146. The gas laws tell us that all gasses have the same number of mols per volume at a given temperature, so the density of each gas is a function of the molecular weight. The voicebox vibrates at the same rate, but when sound waves go from a less dense gas into a more dense gas they go up in frequency and so sound higher. The reverse happens when going from a dense gas into a less dense gas.

How do you make Am241 more powerful? Enough to give cancer

I am not sure where you are going with this? You want to use americium as a poison to give somebody cancer? Seems rather malicious.

Quick look at wikipedia "Because of the low penetration of alpha radiation, Americium-241 only poses a health risk when ingested or inhaled." Make your victim swallow it? Hide it in their cigarette so they inhale it - actually that would be pretty sneaky. If they get cancer they will just explain it away as a result of the smoking, nobody will know you got them with a radioactive isotope!

---

Disclaimer: This post was made in jest. I do not advocate hurting other people, even if they do have horridly stinky bad habits like smoking.

Thank you, tip sent ;-)

So how do they ensure that there is no hydrogen cyanide in what I take ? Huh?

How is the Sodium 2-propylpentanoate made ?

Tip received, thank you ;-)

During and after the synthesis, they will perform one or more separation steps which will remove any unreacted hydrogen cyanide. This may be by doing for example crystalization/filtration, column chromatography, distillation, extraction, etc. After the synthesis the product will be analyzed for purity using analytical techniques such as gas chromatography, atomic adsorption spectrometry, mass spectrometry, UV-vis spectrometry, etc.

Sodium 2-propylpentanoate is made by taking the sodium salt of 2-propylpentanoic acid, also know as valproic acid.
Quote from: wikipedia
Valproic acid, 2-propylvaleric acid, is synthesized by the alkylation of cyanoacetic ester with two moles of propylbromide, to give dipropylcyanoacetic ester. Hydrolysis and decarboxylation of the carboethoxy group gives dipropylacetonitrile, which is hydrolyzed into valproic acid.

The starting materials, cyanoacetic ester and propylbromide are both derived from petrochemicals. This reaction sequence is actually pretty efficient. Note that while cyanoacetic ester has 'cyano' in its name and is structurally reminiscent of cyanide (they both have a carbon triple bonded to a nitrogen) the chemical reactivity is completely different and it is not nearly so toxic.

Do you have experience with the preparation of samples for ESI mass spectrometry?

No, but I do frequently run samples for mass spectrometry. Just your everyday GC-MS and LC-MS with electron ionization, nothing fancy.

We have paid back BTC7.92 so far and continue to pay with 2600mhash x 50btc.com pps rate

So you have paid back 7.92 btc in 18 days, or .44 btc/day leaving 12.08 btc which at that rate should be paid back in about 28 days which would put us somewhere around march 20th, correct?

This will, of course, be affected by any increase of difficulty caused by all the other ASICs coming onto the network, or if we get the ASICs we ordered, correct?
299  Economy / Services / Re: I will answer chemistry questions on: February 20, 2013, 08:22:24 PM
So today I actually do have a question for you. I'd like to know roughly what an answer will cost before you delve in.

I dont have a choice of course, but, if it is in fact made by enviromentally dubious processes or in a way that impacts the health of the makers I'd like to know. Is it made from crude oil or from air or plants or what ?

I've googled but not found much. The second drug is made in many places in the world, the first is a bit more unusual.

The first drug's chemical name is 3-ethyl-3-methylpyrrolidine-2,5-dione
The second's name is sodium 2-propylpentanoate

So my question is this. What is the raw material, and where does that come from? And how, roughly are these chemicals produced. I am not interested in how they are put into capsules or anything like that, since that would be the same for any medicine.

Sodium 2-propylpentanoate is just a rather simple aliphatic organic acid.

3-ethyl-3-methylpyrrolidine-2,5-dione is also known as Ethosuximide.

Quote from: wikipedia
Ethosuximide, 3-ethyl-3-methypyrrolidine-2,5-dione is synthesized from methylethylketone and cyanoacetic ester, which undergo a Knoevenagel condensation. Then hydrogen cyanide is added. After acidic hydrolysis and decarboxylation of the synthesized dinitrile, 2-methyl-2-ethylsuccinic acid is formed. Reacting this product with ammonia gives the diammonium salt, and heterocyclization into ethosuximide takes place during subsequent heating.

The synthesis uses several chemicals which are rather nasty, such as hydrogen cyanide and ammonia, but with proper care and safety precautions they can be handled on large scales with little risk.

Both of your chemicals of interest are derived from petrochemicals currently. I would not say they are any more environmentally unfriendly than all the other plastics and such which people use all the time and are also derived from petrochemicals.
