2601  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: So I got a free laptop and am looking to setup a linux os for a node . on: October 12, 2023, 02:08:32 PM
What would be your preferred  sata ssd and your preferred pcie ssd.
I bought a Samsung 870 EVO Sata SSD a couple of months back. 1 TB for just under €60. My old laptop doesn't have a more modern slot, and one of the reasons I haven't replaced the laptop is that I like having 2 drives in there. Most new laptops are too small for that.

90% of laptop users will never make use of their dual drives so there is nothing to really miss here. If for whatever reason you feel an additional hard disk (not just more disk space) is required, feel free to buy any of the external SSDs that have reasonable performance. And have acceptable failure rates as well - i.e. no Sandisk SSDs.

yeah sandisk and western digital fail all the time. (same ssd btw)

Since this laptop was free and old I went cheap got the 85 bucks for 2tb crucial.

I7 3rd gen is snappy.

I guess I should put bitcointalk on it and practice linux mint more that way.

I have so many fucking windows pc's and  Macs
I normally use windows pc's to mine gpus'

and Macs to create content.

But with Mac altering my favorite feature (easy clone and boot externally) I do not want to use them.

So back to the least used (for me ) os.

2602  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you ever feel tired of waiting? on: October 12, 2023, 04:16:53 AM
To be honest, I've had this question for quite a while. I keep seeing people claiming to just hold and hold; it'll take one, two, three, or whatever years for the next bull market. However, I'm often wondering: do you ever feel tired of waiting for Bitcoin to thrive? The past few months, or the whole past year—I'm not sure I've lost track of time—have been quite stale. Bitcoin has been ranging between $25.000 and $28.000 for quite a while. The volatility compared to other periods is lower than we're used to, or at least, to what I was used to in the past.

I feel that there isn't too much excitement and this adrenaline feeling anymore; suddenly you'd see Bitcoin climb or crash; you'd be curious when it'd stop, what your next move would be, or simply feel accomplished seeing your money's value grow. Price movements are quite insignificant at this point compared to the huge pumps or dumps that occurred in 2020 or 2021.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against holding, nor am I getting frustrated, at least not yet; I did it in the past and regretted it, even though my only source of income is signature campaigns. It's just that sometimes you can't stop the thoughts from circling around your head. I generally didn't bother to even look at it's price, but I've recently started feeling a little wearied. Perhaps it has to do with the life-induced stress that I've discussed in a previous thread. Who knows? How do you cope with waiting?

I am tired but I am 66 so being tired happens easier.

Also The window to wait for moon is shorter for me.

I am looking to exit by 71.

2604  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Yesterday marked 200 days to Bitcoin Halving on: October 12, 2023, 03:58:06 AM

Bitcoin is 200 days to halving yesterday being the 10th day of October, 2023.

Can the exact date of bitcoin halving be known?

I remember opening a thread concerning this topic and I got to know that any date you’ll see online is purely based on predictions and no official date can be known prolly till we get very close to it.

And if you search you’ll see that there are different dates for it online, some April, October (as you have stated in your post).

 you are correct as a huge amount of hash could go online and speed it up 🆙 to march  and 2024 or a huge amount of hash could go offline slowing it to May 2024.

Or the hashrate could simply go sideways and the ½ ing will be in April

2606  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 2023 Diff thread now opened. on: October 12, 2023, 02:38:18 AM
I am guessing Bitmain are heavily mining BTC with their new gears or the hydros which they failed to sell.

Or are mining with the gear they were supposed to build now and ship first thing in January?  Grin
And here I missed my chance of saying no, that's just luck it will drop like a stone:

I lost count, of the previous versions, so assuming brand new gear, we're at 400Exa 7% is 28Exa, the S21 is 200Th, so 140k of those?
Coupon means $600 million and 490MW, let's put a 100% profit margin so $300 million worth of gear?

Not going to do the math for the S19 as I literally have no idea what model and what orders are still unfulfilled, I used to have a sheet on the orders based on PR for the publicly traded companies but I can no longer find the damn thing, besides, it's probably outdated and useless anyhow.
Anyhow, heading to under 200sat/th, so relaxing to be outside of the game with just 300th left heating the floor faaaar away!

well here we are  pushing a 13 day jump vs a 14 day jump or 7%

2607  Economy / Economics / Re: Are short-term rentals to blame for the lack of housing? on: October 12, 2023, 02:25:01 AM
I think the rental price depends on the location, if we have the patience to find a cheaper house to rent then we can easily get it, I once worked in an area where the rent for a place was very expensive, but I was looking for a small road that was not far away and could get it at a very low price cheaper maybe only about 30% of the market price.

yeah I live near the jersey shore in New Jersey.  My home would rent for 3000 a week if it was closer to the beach but it is 15 minutes away from the beach and rents for 3500 a month.

Location means a lot. We are 13 miles from Belmar beach and the rent is about 70% cheaper.

Hey,

i am doing a similar setup as yours. Were you successful with the transformer?

If he uses a 5000 watt 120 to 240 boost transformer such as this one

https://www.amazon.com/Yinleader-Voltage-Converter-Transformer-VTUS-5000/dp/B09LQXP8R2/ref=sxin_16_pa_sp_search_thematic_sspa?

it will not work well

try and find a 50amp single pole circuit breaker.

and it needs more than  10 gauge wire it needs 8 gauge and there would be a proper plug to carry that much current.
2610  Other / Meta / Re: Legendary Members Spread Completely Fake Information - Merit System Do Not Work on: October 12, 2023, 12:41:27 AM

The merit systems works, we see less crap on the forum because of the merit system. Prior to the introduction of the merit system, anyone could build their account to legendary rank without doing any real work or make any positive contribution. They could just jargons and rank up, some high rank accounts of today are from the old system and the owners may not be as knowledgeable on bitcoin as the rank suggests. In this case, the user made the post in off topic board, I rarely visit there because it has nothing to do with bitcoin. You shouldn’t be so worked up about it, an expert in bitcoin could also be a noob in medicine or politics.

yeah it is less than perfect but I estimate it reduced crap by at least 50%.

Trying to let free speech flourish is hard to do.  That's why keeping guys like bedecked around is fine with me.  And turnabout is fair play calling him a legendary troll would be free speech right back at him. Grin
2611  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: So I got a free laptop and am looking to setup a linux os for a node . on: October 12, 2023, 12:36:42 AM
I grabbed the 2tb ssd for about $85 usd including the tax. Which is really cheap price for a 2tb sata ssd.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07YD5F561?
For what it's worth: there's a huge difference in SSDs. This BX500 for instance:
Crucial’s BX500 provides up to 540/500 MB/s of sequential read/write throughput, but that can drop to an average of just 100 MB/s during a sustained workload.
I found out the hard way how sneaky drive manufacturers are nowadays, after I bought a 2 TB HDD that drops to kilobytes per second when filling the last 20%. With this SSD it's not that bad, and for your purpose you'll probably never notice it, but it is something to keep in mind. I now only buy disks that can sustain their performance until they're full.

I will be teaching myself and my wife to run this as I am a bit disgusted with the direct apple os is
I've never liked Apple, and I don't like Windows, so I've been using Linux for a long time. I love it, and can only recommend to get used to using the command line (and vi). I still prefer the console for most file operations, it's faster and much more powerful than the GUI.

What would be your preferred  sata ssd and your preferred pcie ssd.

Now that prices are decent I buy 2tb and 4tb when I buy.

This 'free laptop'  now cost me 85 bucks due to buying the 2tb micron/crucial ssd.

so bring it back. it did serve a purpose, like warning unwary people that that person is likely a nutter. likely would help in matters like this.
Hah, first time I hear about this. When exactly was removed, and why? Not sure that would help though as people have issues using ignore button and on top of that members like BADecker would wear it like a badge of honor.

Theymos will say something about not impeding free speech, that it's easy to abuse and will not bring it back just like the scammer tag or the newbie jail, not going to happen.

That is not bad, but come on BADecker has some brilliant threads 🧵 .
He makes the actor in that movie conspiracies look tame.

If you think that's brilliant:
NSA, CIA, IRS, DHS, ATF, FBI, GCHQ, Federal Reserve, ISIS are Terrorists
Ongoing Civil War in U.S.A. corporation
Warren Buffet is a high level luciferian

Badecker is just an amateur compared to Tom.
And every single one of those topics shows why we must continue to allow unlimited free speech on this forum no matter what drugs the user in question is on! /s

No Tom has far much could be true in some of his threads 🧵.

Badecker and notBatman are way more out there.

@Rikafip

You got the Mel Brooks joke nice.
2614  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: October 11, 2023, 02:01:30 PM
What's up WO folks.

I haven't frequent this corner of the internet for quite some time. The spamming of ChartBuddy sure doesn't help. He need to shut up...

I fricking did it though, amboss.space rank my lightning node as #1

The node has a total capacity of ~17 BTC, and is routing on average 0.5 BTC per day. Happy routing!

What kind of earning do you get with that size?

And how much of your coin stays in the pot?

I am curious 👀 because I want to get an ides how easy it will be for bitcoin to scale rewards down the road.

The earnings are ridiculously low, considering the btc I stake.

I did try to maximize my earnings for a while. By that, I provided liquidity to the LOOP channel, which provides a lightning/on-chain swap service at a very favorable fee for the node who open to them.

In order to do that, I constantly have to open a channel with LOOP, since they close the channel once it's drained on their side. This activity would quickly make me run out of inbound liquidity unless I can get lightning to on-chain btc at a cheaper price than LOOP. For that I used Nicehash and Kraken. The increased activity with Kraken got me audited though. They questioned me about the source of funds, even though I've been a customer of theirs for close to a decade.

During this time, my earnings was close to 300k sats ($80) per month. Now, after I've stopped this aggressive channel opening with LOOP, it's closer to 100k sats ($27) per month. 6-8 months more at this rate and my hardware investment will pay off.

My node is fairly balanced, so out of the 17 BTC capacity it has, 8 BTC or so is provided by me. So, like I said, the earnings are ridiculously low. It's self-hosted though. I don't need to trust my funds with any 3rd part.

Thank you for the service you are offering to others as you provide liquidity to many..

But fuck $80 in coin when you have $216,000 staked so to speak is brutal.

And the $80 earned was when you were aggressive.
Only $27 earned when mellow.

I was hoping you were going to say better numbers.

P.S. sorry I missed your reply.
2615  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: The Bitcoin Scaling Saga: A Satoshi Mapping Adventure on: October 11, 2023, 01:46:33 PM
Yeah and Eth has had endless overprice gas issues.

So if you make a perfect side chain mirror has do you solve the gas fees?

Also down the road not too far off.

Say 2056 blocks will have next to a nothing reward.

2024 = 3.125
2028 = 1.56250
2032 = 0.78125
2036 = 0.390625
2040 = 0.1953125
2044 = 0.09765625
2048 = 0.04882812
2052 = 0.02441406
2056 = 0.01220703          if btc is 10,000,000  the reward is 122,070 usd which is far less than now
2616  Other / Meta / Re: Legendary Members Spread Completely Fake Information - Merit System Do Not Work on: October 11, 2023, 01:38:32 PM
At op good work you spotted one of the forum’s nuttiest people.

NotBatman had a crazy flat earth thread going for a long time.

back in the day the ignore button under a users name would glow bright yellow when that user was ignored.. the more people that ignored them the brighter the word ignore glowed.

so bring it back. it did serve a purpose, like warning unwary people that that person is likely a nutter. likely would help in matters like this.

That is not bad, but come on BADecker has some brilliant threads 🧵 .

Fuck cant think of his name.

Oh got it Mel Brooks

no wait Mel Gibson.

I don't understand what you're talking about, this is what I see in my browser.

I added a system of badges to SMF a while ago, though only two are defined now. Here are the current badges:

Bitcoin expertDev&Tech only. People with this badge know enough about the Bitcoin network to reimplement something very like it from scratch. They are capable of intelligently discussing the Bitcoin network: current protocol, possible attacks, proposed changes, etc. Criteria: Recommendation by an existing Bitcoin expert or core dev and approval by a forum administrator.
Bitcoin-Qt core developer Dev&Tech only. These are the core developers of Satoshi's Bitcoin client. They are listed here. Core developers are among the top contributors to Bitcoin-Qt, and they are all bitcoin experts, though they don't also get that badge.
Troller Awarded for people who keep spreading FUDs, misinformation, conspiracy etc.

A core dev does not "outrank" a bitcoin expert (or vice-versa), and it's possible for someone without a badge to contribute meaningfully to a discussion with experts and core devs.

*Sorry theymos Tongue

Gave you a few merits. 😀
