1501  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How old are you and what brought you into Bitcoin? on: October 17, 2013, 05:56:55 PM
This may have been asked before, but I have not seen it. I guess many of you will try (and fail) to be funny with all sorts of jokes, but it would be interesting to know what kind of people are here right now.
Feel free to add your location too.
I'm in my mid-20s and reside in California (USA). I don't think I want to get too much more specific than that! Good to see so much diversity on the forums!  Smiley
1502  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: You are so biased... on: October 17, 2013, 05:55:41 PM
That is good advice. Many Bitcoin "fanatics" like to spread positive news, because they think it will encourage buying.
Yep, I believe it is not so dissimilar to the Yahoo Finance forums (at least when I saw them years ago when I was looking into stock investment). Lots of FUD and wannabe pump-and-dumpers around.
1503  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Private Keys? on: October 17, 2013, 05:54:15 PM
private key is for login to wallet ?

private key is the most important aspect of Bitcoin it lets you spend your Bitcoins  Shocked

But for most, private key is not important because all Bitcoin clients use it and dont bother you with such technical aspects of Bitcoin

Let's be clear.

Sure, you don't need to memorize or write down your private keys -- the wallet handles that.

But, if you don't control the private keys, you don't own the bitcoins.

Yep, this is something I think many newbies don't understand, specifically because of things like Coinbase. There should be a sticky somewhere, if there isn't already.
1504  Economy / Speculation / Re: Today was an historical day for Bitcoin on: October 17, 2013, 05:50:49 PM
If we're mimicking the markets, how come we're not up 3%+ today like gold and silver?
Gox is up ~ 8-9% since the low about a day ago. So, what are you saying?  Smiley
1505  Economy / Speculation / Re: BITSTAMP eXchange wall Observer. second biggest and best exchange on: October 17, 2013, 05:01:30 PM
Eh, let's not jump to conclusions. As was pointed out by others, that's a letter by *one* bank, for *one* type of account, saying nothing about whether you can switch to another type of account that still allows intl wire transfer.

In short: no. International transfers won't quietly stop working in the US. They won't make it *that* easy for us Tongue
https://online.1stnb.com/LoginAdv.aspx

That's two banks, with this one applying to all accounts. If more are doing the same thing, then it does indeed look like international transfers will quietly stop working in the US.
Hmmmm:
Quote
If you need to send funds to a recipient in a foreign country, you can go to www.westernunion.com
No more wires, use Western Union? That's pretty insulting. Well, Chase is only doing it for one or two specific accounts, right? And we don't know the numbers of people who own those accounts. And this one is obviously a small bank. Still, worrying....
1506  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why almost everything has to revolve around usa? on: October 17, 2013, 04:57:59 PM
We are only closely watching the USA because we are worried about being bombed or extradited.  Cheesy
This exactly. Unfortunately, if you don't pay attention to the USA and you start pissing them off, pretty soon a new client government has been installed in your country.  Undecided
1507  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Is Bitcoin a religion? Satoshi is our God? on: October 17, 2013, 04:56:45 PM
Why Bitcoin is a religion for you? What Satoshi represents to you?
Hehe, looking around this forum a bit, there is no doubt that bitcoin is indeed a religion for many people here. Not me -- I like the idea, and I hope it takes off, but mostly I am here to pad my nest egg.  Smiley
1508  Other / Politics & Society / Re: why bitcoin isnt illegal and will not be made illegal on: October 17, 2013, 04:55:15 PM
in short they would be inviting agorism, they would be creating a situation where it was in the economic interest of normal non activists to unwittingly become agorists purely out of self interest and this would reduce peoples perceived and real dependance on the state.
Considering the lack of a real economy backed by bitcoin -- it is by and large speculation at this point -- what makes you think this? At this point, it could conceivably be "nipped in the bud." Most use bitcoin as an investment vehicle, and no significant VC money has entered the bitcoin sector, so I think we would see adoption and exchange rate plummet if this were to happen anytime in the remotely near future.
1509  Other / Politics & Society / Re: USA owe more than 644 Trillions in debt not 16 Trillions on: October 17, 2013, 04:51:57 PM
I can't say I put much credibility into Alex Jones and Infowars. Anybody think this is worth looking into? Somehow I doubt it.  Smiley
1510  Economy / Speculation / Re: So who sold below $100 during the SR "crash"? on: October 17, 2013, 04:48:47 PM
I didn't sell, but I also thought the exchange rate could go quite a bit lower, especially on BTC-E, where I trade, since there is shallow market depth. Only had 1/5 bids fill. Oh well, better than nothing.  Smiley

I don't actually use private keys very often. Remembering the strong password into my encrypted wallets -- that's what lets me spend my bitcoins.  Smiley
1512  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: You are so biased... on: October 17, 2013, 08:54:47 AM
Certainly plenty of sock puppets, that's for sure. But yeah, the forum is full of fanatics and uber bulls... it's sort of natural, being a bitcoin forum and with all the speculation around bitcoin. I've pretty much gotten past the point of arguing with fanatics about the future of bitcoin -- what a headache.  Smiley
1513  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Silk Road Hollywood Movie on: October 17, 2013, 06:08:56 AM
Is this for real? I remember seeing jokes about this. I can't imagine this would make for the most interesting move, but hey, maybe I'm wrong. I'm sure it will create a somewhat distorted picture.
1514  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The US Govt "seizing" their way to control of BTC on: October 17, 2013, 06:03:26 AM
How much does Satoshi have?  Smiley

Yeah, it's a bit troubling. Do we know that they have access to DPR's wallets, though, and not just the user/escrow wallets? Are we sure that they actually have access to 600k bitcoins (or whatever the number is), or is that wild speculation as well?
1515  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: will the bitcoin reach $1000 one day...? on: October 17, 2013, 05:39:02 AM
Indeed, bitcoin will reach $1000, I think. In fact, I think it will go several magnitudes more than that, given some time. We're still in the early speculation phase. Once adoption really starts picking up (major e-commerce companies and financial institutions, for instance), the sky is the limit. It might be a while though. But hey -- gives us more time to pick up them coins.  Smiley
1516  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Private Keys? on: October 17, 2013, 05:36:38 AM
They are just a shared wallet. The address you have for payment isn't in a wallet that you control, as others have pointed out. Hence, no private keys for you. Blockchain.info provides such a wallet, though. In general, shared wallets like Coinbase and Inputs.io don't give you access to the wallets that contain your addresses.
1517  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: The End of Alt Coins on: October 17, 2013, 05:22:45 AM
I think we all know that many of the clone coins -- which represent most altcoins, really -- won't last. But I have to think that a few will stick around. LTC, PPC, maybe XPM, who knows. It's a lot of speculation at this point. But the end? Nah.
1518  Other / Politics & Society / Re: people sending coins to the feds? on: October 17, 2013, 05:08:20 AM
I've heard of people sending small amounts of BTC to the silkroad address the feds now have with messages attached, but there seem to be some larger amounts going in now too. today there was one for 12.15078995. there some in there for 136.47811354 and 59.2772818. what the hell is going on?

heres the address on blockchain.info
http://blockchain.info/address/1F1tAaz5x1HUXrCNLbtMDqcw6o5GNn4xqX#

They are still emptying addresses from silk road.
Wow, is that really the case? Like, that's the consensus around here? I wasn't sure at this point that they had gained access to the wallets -- just that they had physical possession of the servers. Interesting stuff.

Edit: Oh, maybe you mean the escrow/user wallets, not DPR.
1519  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer - MtGoxUSD wall movement tracker - Hardcore on: October 17, 2013, 02:58:54 AM
Hmmm, BTC-E has been down for at least 1.5 hours here -- since I got home, anyway. Makes me nervous. Thankfully it's been a boring few hours, from the looks of it.
1520  Economy / Speculation / Re: Today was an historical day for Bitcoin on: October 17, 2013, 02:55:49 AM
Its better than the us is more safe now than if there had be a default.

There is going to be a default. All they are doing today is ensuring the we have to suffer through another 3 more months of bad economy and bad politics first.
3 months to default? I'm really not sure about that. I used to underestimate the government's ability to sustain this monstrosity... not so much anymore. It'll be a while. It's okay -- a US default down the road gives us all more time to pick up some more coins on the way.   Smiley
