Alcaraz is currently the best tennis player together with Djokovic, but how long that will continue to go together is the question. I think that Alcaraz is for the better player on clay, on hard court it will probably be the same. At the moment Djokovic also has an injury, so then you have no chance to be among the best in the world anyway. And Djokovic has already experienced everything in tennis and a mountain of experience, but Alcaraz has his age and physique on board. I would love to see these 2 play against each other in tournaments.

Remarkable what happened in the final between Holger Rune and Botic van de Zandschulp. Van de Zandschulp was allowed to serve on his own service for the game but messed it up and was broken and then finished in the last minutes of the game. Those are mental blows that you will receive and your bank account will also become a lot less large. Well, I don't think Van de Zandschulp will be awake for long because he already played a great tournament with a final place, but it is a shame. In any case, they are good and hard lessons.

The best part is his age. At the very young age. Third ATP tour title of the year. From the beginning this year is really good for him. He is on the list of players who had won good number of titles as a teenager. It is something that he have been expecting to happen for a long. From the words after the match we were able to understand it. Tsitsipas tried his best, and once again Alcaraz proved he's stronger than him and now it is 4-0 on H2H match apperance.

Rune v v.d.Zandschulp
6:4, 1:6, 7:6
Apart from Lajovic's win which was due to defeating Rublev who was the second seed after Djokovic, another win that was even more extraordinary was this final, however, a player who was trailing 2-5 in the final set was able to turn things around into a title, moreover Rune get a little treatment for an injury, hopefully no one will take the injury as a drama.

Tsitsipas lost to Alcaraz quite easily not what was expected, he was unable to hold Alcaraz down hoping that Tsitstipas could at least make this match longer, but Alcaraz who appeared great made things easy for him to defend the title in front of his own fans.

Djokovic withdraws from Mutua Madrid Open, https://www.atptour.com/en/news/djokovic-madrid-2023-withdrawal
An injury he received at the Banja Luka tournament forced him to withdraw from this major tournament.

Djokovic missing Madrid is big news. Its amazing how a simple incident which causes
an injury can compound on top of other things within a season, he missed Indian Wells
because of visa rows and now an injury, his season so far has been disrupted.

I wonder if this is a worrying thing for Djokovic and his career, is this the start of
his final years?

As regards Madrid, the threat of Djokovic has been removed so I'm sure the other
top seeds will fancy their chances even more!

Alcaraz has to be big favourite

Without any doubt, Nole doesn't want to take any risks before RG. He has an elbow injury if I'm not mistaken and he played in a compression sleeve in Banja Luka, which is not a very good sign. By missing Madrid (and possibly Rome) he will try to win some time to heal his injury.

Djokovic knows better than us of course but taking no risks also means less preparation and less serious testing for the actual physical condition. Tennis is a sport where practice counts a lot I think. The feeling for the ball and when you find your game rhythm, that isn't just there I believe. Djokovic is still a different beast, but look at Zverev. That's horribly bad how he is performing.

I am happy for Alcaraz as he is a young guy who deserves all the attention right now from the tennis world. He hasn't beaten just any player now, but Tsitsipas who has one of the best records on clay out there and he didn't even have a chance against Alcaraz.

Djokovic missing Madrid is big news.

And this is a chance for Alcaraz to become number 1 again. Djokovic has only 365 points more.

After Rune won the match in Munich, I am looking forward to seeing him in Madrid. I am also looking forward to see Zverev. I hope he will reache the round of 16. There he will meet Alcaraz and certainly end the tournament. But it would be an opportunity for him to compete with the upcoming number 1.

I am happy for Alcaraz as he is a young guy who deserves all the attention right now from the tennis world. He hasn't beaten just any player now, but Tsitsipas who has one of the best records on clay out there and he didn't even have a chance against Alcaraz.
Tennis is a popular sport that is growing in popularity throughout the world. Some people find the game boring, while others love each and every moment of it. Some important players wouldn't be able to attend due to the tournament that is moving toward Madrid next. Djokovic's present health has been a complete distraction, and his current challenge will prompt him to miss the trip to Madrid. He was my favorite, therefore I figured Alcarez would be a better choice considering the fact that he's in best form, he is similarly quick and accurate like Djokovic.

@aoluain I don’t see any reason to worry about him, because he took a smart decision to preserve his strength for the French open where he’ll be hoping that he and Nadal can play in the final’s one last time as it would probably be Nadal’s final appearance at the French open. @shogun47 at 35 his career is definitely coming to an end, but I feel that he’ll stretch it for a year or max 2 year’s because of his recurring injuries it makes no sense for him to continue beyond that time frame.

Very possible, but new record marks pop up here and there. For example, Djokovic now stands at 384 weeks number 1 in the ATP ranking. I am sure that he has his eyes on the 400. Another magical barrier to cross. The GS record is definitely the primary goal for Djokovic. Now depending on how his injuries are developing, the duel between him and Nadal would certainly be of historical relevance should they indeed meet in the final. My god what a game would that be? Both are at 22 GS, Roland Garros is Nadal's second home and winning a GS title there would make it pretty hard for Djokovic to overtake Nadal later on. It would still be 2 GS titles to go then. But there is Alcaraz and beating him is tough on almost all surfaces, meaning that I think it would be harder than many believe for Djokovic to add another two titles. He would still be able to in terms of quality, but his health condition will probably decide about the outcome of his mission.

Djokovic missing Madrid is big news.

And this is a chance for Alcaraz to become number 1 again. Djokovic has only 365 points more.
~snip

he actually cannot get to no.1 in Madrid
Alcaraz is title defender, so no new points, and Djokovic is losing 360 points, so if Alcaraz win it, he will be 5 points behind Djokovic after Madrid

but there is a chance for Alcaraz on a clay court season for sure, especially if Djokovic miss one/two tournaments more after Madrid
IMO, Alcaraz will hardly defend title in Madrid, not sure he is able to win in series, week by week

I think its great not having Djokovic or Nadal playing, it leaves room for the likes
of Sinner, Rune, Alcaraz, Zverev, Rublev and Medvedev to get that little bit further,
and actually everyone else who might have met them in the rounds.

Also its nice to see others who are making names for themselves, Fritz, Lajović
and Musetti for example.

For me there are two to watch tomorrow, Wawrinka plays  Cressy and Gasquet plays
Landaluce, would like to see both veterans come through their matches.

I agree, these matches look promising. Meanwhile, getting ready for Madrid showdown. Some interesting matches can happen early in the draw. Medvedev could face Murray already in R2 and Tsitsipas could meet former World No. 3 Dominic Thiem also in the second round. Medvedev and Tsitsipas have byes in R1, whereas Murray and Thiem will have to defeat qualifiers in their R1 matches. Speaking about qualifiers btw, it may appear a tricky task as guys like Karatsev, Cerundolo and Cecchinato are all playing in qualification.

P.S. Just checked the results and Cerundolo seems out. He unexpectedly lost to some Shevchenko guy 6:7, 4:6.

In the last couple of years; Nadal, Federer and Djokovic are/were getting more and more injured and it takes a longer time to heal. Roland Garros is around the corner and hopefully both Nadal and Djokovic are fully healed so we will get a nice battle. These days, there are a lot of young talents (Alcaraz on top, but also Zverev, Tsitsipas, Rune, ...) so it will be interesting to see who reaches the finals of the grandslams and who can lift the trophees.

The worst ending that I am fearing for Nadal would be if he plays a successful French Open and then at some point has to give up because of an injury. Every time I watch him play these days (when he actually plays) there is this feeling all the time that he might just stop and say he can't go on anymore. It is a bit annoying because often those are the best games you can get at a tournament when Nadal is involved. In this particular case a last fight between Nadal and Djokovic would also be a nice and logical end to one's own expectations from the tennis era of the three GOATS. With his history of injuries it is hard to imagine that he will still be playing even in 2024 and 2025.

Well unfortunately not all top sports people get to choose the time or location of their
retirement and like yourself I fear this will be the case with Nadal. It isnt looking like he
will have much of a clay season to prepare for Roland Garros but really as long as he
is in the tournament he is a dangerous opponent for everyone. By that I mean that
his skill level and experience will still be potent weapons.

I agree also that with every passing week that he isnt playing makes me doubtful
he will be playing in 2024 or certainly 2025.

Maybe we are just waiting for Nadal to announce his retirement, as Federer did, injuries and the surgery he had to undergo ended up preventing him from playing in his favorite tournament Wimbledon and it is the only tournament where his chances of winning were so great, but the Laver Cup is the place he was last for him to be a tennis player.

The Mutua Madrid Open has started in the main draw, Alcaraz is expected to dominate here after Djokovic is confirmed not to play due to injury, and several players may fail him but he seems very difficult to beat, like in the women's section Swiatek who always performs better on clay then the two tennis players this would be the champion favourite.

Rafael Nadal is not as good as he was anymore and I think even he knows that very well. I would say even he is not expecting to win some big thing. It is also true that actually, people are waiting for him to retire. Right now he is just a shadow of his former self.

Alcaraz is certainly the best player in this tournament. I believe we will get proof of that when he will be walking through his opponent regularly in this tournament.
