I'm new to cryptos but how would the official GUI differ from the unoffical ones currently available like lightwallet?

It seems lightwallet is quite easy to use and opensource, is it missing something I'm not aware of?

Official GUI will have everything included with it, unlike the lightwallets... runs node and wallet, etc.

idk, it seems like lightwallet can do everything a casual/average user needs?

...
I mean, when the GUI is out, it is ready for non-ponies and non-fairies (read: normal people) unlike we are apparently. The potential markets are huge and the price potential is even higher because the wealthy bagholders will not bother to sell too cheap if ever.

Another nice side effect of a GUI is that it encourages people to stop using Poloniex as a wallet.
I think that the GUI is a bigger deal than what a lot of people like to admit. I think it is something that has consistently made it "difficult" for the average/casual user to easily enter the Monero world and you never want to make it hard for your "customers" to buy. However with that said, it may not create as big a bang as it should right out of the gates because most of the people involved at this point have made accommodations for it and either keep their Monero on an exchange(s) or MyMonero or learned simple wallet and these people will gladly use it but they are already "in".  Unfortunately it will only be a relatively small number of people who will immediately jump in and start buying for the first time and using the new wallet. The bigger gains will come over the next few months and weeks as new people from the DMs, people newly introduced to Monero and those who have been waiting specifically for it because in their mind we're like the "only" ones without a gui wallet and now see more value and legitimacy in the project.

To some Monero may look bad because there aren't those bells and whistles so of course the devs are "incompetent" because every coin had a shiny new wallet when it first came out... "how hard can it be?".  Now, I understand there is a lot more going on here than just writing another wrapper or grabbing a complete wallet codebase and changing the captions, logo and some text and BANG, you've got a wallet. But the average person doesn't know, understand or care and we need to start thinking about how we can do a better job of relating to those people instead of just the "technophiles" which we seem to attract because of the great technology we have.

We have fantastic devs on this project, some great contributors who have provided natural leadership and now that most of the key underpinnings of this project are in place or in progress, we need to bring those people with money to spend and not a lot of technical savvy or maybe just no desire to deal with a console app into the fold, make it easy to buy, hold, send, convert to btc, make payments, do some mining, etc... do it right and they will help to push Monero into a place of prominence and drive the market cap to a point that makes it even more palatable to more industries to use without all the volatility.

Sorry for running on about this but as I said, in the grand scheme of moving Monero from an "also ran" to a leader in the ecash space I believe this is critical!

I think it's really only missing the "Official Monero" brand name and the impression that it will be supported for the long run by the dev team.  Plus, I'm not sure exactly how fully cross platform it is... someone with more info would have to address that.

I think the official monero brand is a good point, light wallet runs on java so should be available to use on most operating systems

The official GUI will run on windows, linux and mac.

light wallet connects to someone else's node, that's what makes it "light" yet you lose some privacy.  It was created when running a node took much greater resources than now.  Although for some people it will still be useful.

The official GUI is more than a wrapper and it will end up having more functionality than it is initially being released with.  Don't ask for details as this was discussed a long time ago and I am senile with one foot in the grave.

I hope aminorex completes his cruise around the world with no mishap.

I bought more so that means the price should be continuing down. Tongue  @the world revolves around me

Yeah but still -- why would that have to keep him away from us here on the forum?

Surely they have free wi-fi on the cruise ship....?

LOL

Have a great feeling about GUI release. It will bring this precious, truly fungible digital currency to masses. gonna be an epic week!

I guess it will not come this week and if so not in a state which would be good for monero (beta with bugs). But maybe Jaqueee is able to fix all the known bugs. Would be really great ofc. I think the GUI should be released without any bugs. Otherwise it would give me/adolf/CTTE/Take A Horse To Water/aminorex/xmrdude/xmrmafia/(and every other person it is said i am too) another reason to FUD  Roll Eyes

Very nice discussion and what a relief to read some good stuff for a while.
When it comes to Aminorex, his absence is a sign of buying zone.  Cheesy

When it comes to the shorter - most likely he is not an institutional investor. I doubt the institutions use alter egos and are flipflopping after each 2 % pump and dump.

I am not calling bottom because right after I do so someone dumps it even deeper but I feel much safer now, the coin once again sub 10 (which it has been most of its life).
Inflation getting closer to the initial bitcoin's inflation, and there are rumors a couple of nice thing are about to be released soon.
What are we lacking now is some heavy buying that is taking the coin to the moon.  Grin
That requires deep pockets since the legitimate pumper need to hold the minimum level on the surface of the moon, that being said the good thing about the space is it has not that much gravity so the further rises will have less resistance due to some weight released from the early guys and thus coins getting redistributed.

I guess you are referring to me, yes i am a horrible investors(i suffer from ADHD and shouldn't be trading in the first place), i am not just a little bit bad, i keep doing horrible decisions while trading.

I guess selling was a mistake since my eth short failed badly(of course), i ended up buying 1134 xmr on margin instead.

it fits.. >_>

please stop attributing these dumps to a single entity, it serves no purpose. it is not the dumper/bearwhale/nr-g that is driving the price down solo. the market is heavily manipulated yes, but that is the result of having a totally unregulated free market with low liquidity.

oh and: does anyone here still have bids open??

What is happening here? XMR is only clearly in a correction yet the people are already overreacting. Those people who are very anxious and angry are probably the ones who were scared to be left behind so they panic bought at the top. Now they feel that the are trapped but that is far from the truth. We should all be patient and keep supporting Monero. The cryptosphere will be too big for bitcoin and other cryptocoins will naturally be needed to fill the niche that bitcoin cannot reach.

It can be difficult knowing if a price is good or not. You might think you are getting a good deal buying xmr below 0.01 and later it turnes out the prices falls to 0.005, I previously assuming 0.012 was a fair price for xmr but it's far been a while since the price where there.

I was thinking about buying more XMR, but I am still undecided. Because there's still plenty of room to fall  Undecided

[...]

It was an interesting read. I like SF, always enjoyed it Smiley

However, even the imminent release of the GUI wallet doesn't seem to impress the market.
The news are full of "articles" about "XMR vulnerabilities", telling afterwards of allegedly lost funds on mymonero.com, of the mymonero.co fraud site and of oasis scam.

It's good days for seasoned traders and puzzling days for the res of us Smiley

be careful with those unofficial wallet of monero i still have some xmr in one of those wallet that i can't open anymore after updated. good thing transfer only few moneroj to that wallet i forgot what version of lightwallet, but i still have my keys i think.
