1681  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: How to set up solo mining? on: December 29, 2015, 12:10:55 AM
Hi guys!
I got a U3 and want to play lucky! I've decided to try my luck mining solo and try my chances in finding a block.

Can anyone give me some light on how to set up solo mining?
yes I can wait for link

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=763510.0   he runs a very easy way to solo mine

Best to run it that way. The minimal fee you would pay in the off chance you find a block is easily offset by the better performance of the pool that would offset by several factor the fee% you'd have to pay against the statistical chance that you get your block orphaned when you find it.

TLDR: You have better chances at solo.ck pool than if you set up mining on your own node.
1682  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: noob question : can i use antminer S1-S7 card on USB ? on: December 29, 2015, 12:07:04 AM
Embarrassed OK.

There's a project for running blades of a RasPi so the answer is not quite no. You can look through it yourself but its not something that can be done natively;

Hello,

How im gonna get work kano.is with my antminer S1?  Huh
Something its mining, but what? If i config it the kano.is
example Group Fabric dosent support AntMiner S1, its easy to use.
I follow info on website. What went wrong?!  Huh

Did you set your miner to mine to stratum+tcp://stratum.kano.is:3333?

Give me a screenshot of your miner config and miner status please.

Yes, I think I put the settings correctly. I'm not stupid.  Smiley
http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2hej8m9&s=9#.VoEqnFJ67IU

I'm not saying you're stupid, but you did not set it up correctly. You cannot leave the password field blank, that is a null value and cgminer does not handle it. Set the password to x and it should work.

That is why Kano said you never submitted any shares ever. You never had it run.
1684  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S7 is available at bitmaintech.com with 4.86TH/s, 0.25J/GH on: December 28, 2015, 09:51:28 AM
buyers are probably betting on btc price increase and they are spending $$ via instant bitcoin purchase on coinbase, then immediately spending on miners. This way, they essentially spent $$, but IF bitcoin appreciates and they will eventually sell mined bitcoin, they will make profit in $$.
It is obvious that they will not make their price in BTC, unless your electricity is free or almost free.

Buying an S7, or any miner right now, is a losing proposition if you are doing this (buying on coinbase to convert to a miner BTC purchase). Just buy the BTC and HODL. Don't bother buying miners at current prices.

Buying an S5 and ROI in 3 months sound pretty nice right now, actually. I'd imagine prices would be in the 250$ range by now, with how crazy the diff is going. Meanwhile the S7 look like 4~5 ROI depending on how high the difficulty keep going at.
1685  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Any software to alert when temperature goes over a certain amount? on: December 28, 2015, 09:48:35 AM
Its nice mining in the Winter because all you do is open the window. However sometimes the temperature outside can change so I was wondering if its possible to download some software that can alert you when miners go over a certain temperature and for you to open the window more.

Mdude's Miner Monitor will pop some annoying popup that will beep. Can also be setup to use a mail server and send you email.

Cryptoglance can also be used to monitor all your miners.

yes I have never fully understood this, and I will keep it that way   Wink
Same here, never fully understood this days destroyed statistic.
Why it is important or it matters when old coins moves? What this tells us?

Old coins being moved = more coins in the market, because they were out of the market for some time and are not being dumped.

Also it is an indicator that people are not moving coins to themselves, or only to be dumped and have no effect in price

Its a purely statistical thing, its just something like the coin weight used, which is calculated by the coin age and size.

Basically if 10 BTC has been idle for 100 days and are then moved, it is going to equal to 1000 BTC days destroyed.

Imo its a statistic that hold very little interest for the majority of users.
IIRC it is part of determining transaction priority. It is what allows some transactions to not require a fee and still be confirmed quickly. There is a portion of each block set aside for such priority transactions.

The coin age/weight system is used, priority depends on amount of BTC too and unconfirmed tx age. But coinage destroyed is just a statistic based off some of the former which is a useful tool but does not do anything by itself afaik. Just some feature on some of the blockchain explorers.
1688  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Are we all going to power consumption hell? on: December 28, 2015, 06:25:47 AM
Guys it has occurred to me BTC is being used as population  control in China.

China has huge over population issues.

So how do lower population in a way that appears non violent.

Make really cheap power with dirty coal mining plants.-----  yes

Give people a reason to burn more and more coal. ---------  yes

Watch record bad pollution occur. ------------------------------yes

And btc is a key component for this to happen  as it drives more and more power in China which has some of the worst coal power plants in the world.

The smart one will use air filter, the rest will... choke and die? Kind of sad. And its probably hard to put sanction on China about their pollution because of all the economic/political power they have.

1691  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: THIS IS AN ISSUE: Bitcoin mining network uses a min. of 257 Megawatts per hour. on: December 28, 2015, 05:03:09 AM
I don't really a see problem as its a tiny portion of the global electricity use, its a negligible portion of the pollution caused globally, in term of heat generated/wasted as it does not generate gaz which cause the global warming.

Global warming is caused by gaz emitted that block the heat in the atmosphere, the actual heat we are wasting here has no impact whatsoever on this. So far, we're not causing much pollution and we're using an infinitesimal amount of the renewable energy we have access to.

The whole thing has two aspect, consumption and production;

1) So while dumping heat itself is not really a problem, you can still make the most of it. Turning back the heat into electricity is not really feasible, so that leave a unconverted use of the heat; Heating people's dwelling.

We could compare to how much energy is being put into dwelling heating per year, but i think we get the point. If all the ASIC's in place where we need the heat, we would not be wasting any output.

2) How is the electricity we use for the ASIC is produced in the first place? Well now this is a very large debatable sub-topic. The way i see it; It does not matter as far as Bitcoin is related.

My logic;
If a company gets its hand on X amount of fossil fuel to generate Y amount of electricity. Z amount of pollution is going to be produced, whatever the demand for electricity is for. There is really nothing we can do about that, but wait for laws to be passed to ban or greatly reduce the amount of pollution we produce because of horrible way of producing electricity.

If its the small portion of the electricity is not used by miners, it might take a bit more time to go through the fossil fuel, but we will anyways. Ultimately the same amount of pollution will be generated no matter what, until we ban it, or run out.

TLDR: Its up for a country and or companies or maybe even individuals to switch to clean, renewable source of electricity production. Where i live, we're almost exclusively on hydroelectricity. And i would need to use the electricity anyways to heat up during most of the year since its cold here.

Its like blaming cars for generating so much pollution. Its a lie for people with narrow sight.

We have the technology and the ressources to switch every cars to long distance capable electric cars. In term of energy consumption, it would be completely clean. Yet we don't do it.

This is absolutely the same thing for Bitcoin.

The reason is that some people and companies makes money out of generating immense amount of pollution. You can blame "the gun" if you want. But i think its the "person holding the gun" that is to blame.
1692  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Thinking of buying an ant miner. I have some questions. on: December 27, 2015, 09:15:00 AM
your only concern should be your electricity and initial investment, then everythign will be settled for that, there ar eno scam pool, they are all well big known pool

go with s7 if your electricity is not very cheap like 0.05 or below, otherwise you cna try s5

Yeah I was going to get an s7. Electricity costs are .11

then you have your profit, because at present 1 s7 generate around $300 a month, and with 0.1 your consumption will be around $90, plenty of room for profit

also 1 s7 cost only $1k on bitman website, so you see 5 months roi

That calculation is based on no difficulty rise. If the difficulty rises 5% every 13 days, he will not ROI.

And 5% is pretty hopeful right now. I dont know how long this mad rise is going to last, but if you calculate ROI without 5~8% average, i think you're going to end up with a severe gap in your pockets with nothing to fill it in.
1693  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Bit-X Gh/s using to mine? on: December 27, 2015, 09:12:17 AM
I have recently registered at bit-x and saw I could buy gh/s.
Can I use those gh/s to mine bitcoins, or is it just trading only?

It's like cex.io I think. Both trade and mine.

Yeah but what we're all saying right now is that Cex.io is not actually mining. Their GHs shares are inactive.
So you can earn some BTC post fees over the GHS at Bit-x, but apparently not at Cex.io.

i thought marco is not bringing this alone, i remember another manager or it was a bot?

There was Bitcoin_BOy$, but I think he got busy and I have not seen him in a bit.  I think he did a lot of the coding aspect's. (Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe he did that).

Marco was the main one as far as campaign manager.  Everyone really does not need to worry.  In 8 months of being in it I have yet to have a week not fixed.  I have not seen a payment after hot wallet refill so not sure if it's paying or everyone will need fixed.  But I would think it would be done once he gets back from limited based off history.

He probably intend on checking the posts of the people when he get back before accepting to payout, in case people would take this opportunity to spam while he's gone and not there to "Catch them".
But there is a 150 post limit, right? That should be able to reduce the amount of paid spamming posts.
I am really interested in joining this campaign, marco(theminer) told me there was a free spot in a few days, but that is what he said a week of 2 ago. So I am still waiting, marco please reply or PM me if I am in.

Thank you in advance!

Over 2 weeks that could still be thousands of USD of spam post paid, which would be just bad. Right now there has been no payouts but the posts over 150 are still being counted. Maybe the limit right now is 300 over 2 weeks, but it will need to be manually approved first.

Anyways i don't know anything, just guessing. Either way marco always pay sooner or later so there is no need for any hysterics.
1695  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Bit-X Gh/s using to mine? on: December 27, 2015, 09:07:04 AM
Yes, it s classic cloud mining service, at least it was when I used to use them.
So the gh/s will earn bitcoins for me?

How is it possible you have 112 posts and you know nothing about cloud mining?Huh Have you purchased that account or what?
I have not bought this account because my password never changed.
I know what cloud mining is, but some websites only allow gh/s to trade them and not actually to mine them.

@VirosaGITS, thank you for the reply. I will buy a few gh/s from them and hope to get some profit.

Why would you trade ghs if you cannot use them for mining? What s the purpose of buying or owning those ghs?? Never heard of any website like that.

Ghash.io has GH/s that the mining was disabled because profitability was too low. People still trade them in the hope that they will be worth something in the future, since BTC profitability went much higher.

However when it was very profitable to turn them back on, nothing happened, so...

So only total moron would get into that market now, unless you re already in. This is why I do not understand his question.

Its pretty much a low chance gamble, yes. Right now it has purely speculative value.
IF the GHS get reactivated mining wise or whoever owns the GHs get compensated somehow, the value of those GHS shares could triple or beyond.

Its pretty much like gambling on an Altcoin rising or such.

Id probably mine with .11, Mine is up over .25 a kw/h . if its cold where you live maybe you could turn off the heating and just use the miner as your heater, And as a byproduct you will be creating bitcoin =p

Unfortunately I live in Florida, so I'll just have to crank the AC up higher.

I heard someone mention these things are loud. I was going to put it in my bedroom. Is that a bad idea?

If you don't mind sleeping next to noise equivalent to someone screaming in your ear 24/7, then you could do it. Would not take long before you become deaf. Yeah its a pretty bad idea.

And you should dump the air outside, you're not supposed to AC this stuff. Thats way too expensive and i doubt you have cheap enough electricity to do it in the first place anyways.

how are coupons being given out?  If I had one, i might pick up some more machines.  Are they giving them to people who already bought them?

They were given out for issues compensation, but i have not seen any for sale for a while. The price a S7 would be with a coupon make it attractive right now, but i can't find one, so i guess i can also wait 2 weeks for the price to drop 100-200$ again.
1699  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: So, now I've got a blockchain on: December 26, 2015, 09:08:36 PM
I've been looking for faucets, and I can't find any sensible info about them. Also I suspect it might take a while to get enough to be transferred. Maybe I'll just find someone in the UK willing  to make a small sale, or I'll sell a .com domain name or something.

There are many exchanges at which you can buy BTC with a bank account, interact or just master cards (with fees). If you have stuff to sell, that could work, too.
1700  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive Bitmain Antminer S7 Setup [HD] on: December 26, 2015, 09:07:40 PM
I can get one, maybe two, miners, on one circuit, depending on the load.  What are other "home miners" doing to get 5 or 6 miners in the same room?  I understand "the professionals" are wired to do this, but what are "home miners" doing?

I'm in the US with 120V home wiring.

if not wiring for 240v, you'll have to map your circuits. I happened to have two circuits nearby, so i just use a good extender/surge protector to bring power from the second circuit to the room with a first circuit. This allowed me to run two S7 in the same room. This is probably a limit/room as with more the room will overheat.

One typical residential 15A, 120V circuit can safely run only ONE S7 as 1345-1360W (at peak)/110 (at minimum)=12.3 A. You have to stay at or below 80% of 15A (~12A) for continuous use ( and NOTHING else on the circuit). The fact that on peak it will be 12.3A might be OK since it will be at maximum output and minimal voltage. Typically, voltage is higher than 110V, giving you a slight cushion, but it is close.
A 110/120V 20A circuit is definitely OK-you can check your box re which circuits you have.

Batches 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are safer in this regard (they use less power).

And to handle the "wiring", i use big outdoor yellow extension cords. I bring those the a corner in the living room and have all the miner dumb their heat strait outside. I have actual 120V so i do okay up to 1400~1440 per circuit i guess. That should be enough for some OC room for the S7 after the warranty expires.
