2103  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bear markets are for building on: July 09, 2022, 11:37:30 AM
It is fact and the first time I knew about it is from Vitalik Buterin in bear market 2018. I am sure Vitalik likely is not a first person who said about it.

After each bear market, Bitcoin has more value - yeah value, not price. Price growth is a consequence of value growth. If we talk about altcoins, in bear market you can find truly potential altcoin projects. It is different than in bull market when people are over hyped with quick-rich stories and forget about fundamentals. Many potential in bull market will die in bear market but potential ones in bear market will more hardly to die. Many of them will become rising stars in next bull run.

It is better if you use a free version on Github as I shared there. In addition, what you shared is a 1st edition, the 2nd edition is there

Two more topics on Elliptic Curve Cryptography from Bitcointalk members.
2105  Other / Meta / Re: Where do you post most? on: July 09, 2022, 06:45:28 AM
I don't think that would be a smart move as all those active in altcoin signature campaigns would just find some other board to spam so I say let them fill their signature quotas there. It's not like we don't have enough signature spam in other parts of the forum already.
theymos saw this point, perhaps and decided to implement bump scores in a few boards initially but still being opened to expand it to more boards if necessary.

A few months before and after the merit system kick-off, there were debates that if spam endemic can not be handled, all signature should be disabled. So far, it does not happen as merit system works and later gets support from bump score changes.

Rules for Serious Discussion and Ivory Tower
Quote
- No advertising of any kind.
 - Signatures are not displayed.

Two new no-signature boards
- Serious discussion. No limit on topic, but moderation of on-topicness and general sanity will be extra harsh. No advertising of any kind. Signatures are not displayed.

Ideas for improving post quality?
What are everyone's ideas for improving post quality?

I have mostly ruled out:

 - Removing signatures or sig ads globally.
 - Requiring payment to wear sig ads.
 - Banning account sales.

Theymos on next April fool: If you have 50% of your posts in altcoin+bitcoin+ bounties.. you are kicked  ?? Shocked
No member will be kicked out of the forum because of posting in any board, if posts are not scam or plagiarism.

If theymos does anything seriously, it should be turn off all signature in Altcoin boards (Discussion/ Speculation sub board ie.). That is enough to stop bounty hunters to spam there. However, I still see it won't happen after the launch of bump scores years ago.
2108  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Tips for newbie to long-term investing on: July 09, 2022, 03:51:51 AM
Put what you can afford to invest. You done your best so far, because many DCA strategies that most people do stop in the middle of the road because of unstable monthly income.
Don't invest more than what you can afford to lose it all. It is meaningful applicable for all investment strategies, not only for Dollar Cost Averaging.

Quote
Because the DCA concept will not only focus on bear markets, each month must have a budget to allocate.
It's not a must. You should maintain your DCA investment regularly but you don't have to do it exactly on weekly, monthly or quarterly basis as you plan initially. You should prioritize more important things in your life. When you have spare money, you can DCA. If you manage to do it regularly, it is good. Else, it does not mean you can not do DCA.

In my opinion, DCA on monthly or quarterly basis is good enough for your capital allocation and emotional control. If you do it on weekly basis, it is like you are trading and your emotion will be affected by the market.

after opening it gave me recovery seed
Did you write down your recovery seed as a backup for that wallet?

Quote
and it automatically downloads .json file to my PC, this is the problem, I never want to copy or download anything crypto wallet to my PC because I believe writing down my recovery seed is a lot safer but now I got a JSON file
You can have different backup of a same wallet in different formats. For example, with Myetherwallet, you can have different formats for backup as well as access your wallet: Keystore file, Mnemonic seed phrase, Private key and more.

One of most important things in crypto are
  • Learn how to and practice to back up your wallet
  • Test that backup's utility (sometimes you will make a unusable backup by typos when writing down seed phrase, etc.
  • If you can use your backup to import that wallet (same as when you need to recover it) successfully, you can use it to store your coin
  • If you follow these steps, you will never feel panic that you lose access to your wallet by forgetting password, don't have usable backup
2110  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Unexpected Death? on: July 09, 2022, 02:41:14 AM
Shinzo Abe, former Prime Minister of Japan shot dead. Once after this incidents entire stocks in Japan have fallen. Though he is a former Prime Minister, he should've been given even better security. A country like Japan which is a leader to technology and innovation failing in security is really bad. Same time it has the stricter gun control law. The person who shot him have made the gun of his own.
RIP Shinzo Abe. It is a sad story in a very peaceful country.

I agree as consequence of peaceful country, security protection there looks like not too well. Very little security guards, too close contacts with the crowd and response is manual, not with gun aims at the attacker and control him immediately.

Quote
Japan being a crypto friendly country it has got more real-time usage of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Does this incident have any impact over the cryptocurrency market.
I don't see how this accident affects cryptocurrency regulation in Japan. Sorry if I am missing anything.

When I read your topic title, I guess you meant about unexpected death which causes losing access of private key, then wallet, then Bitcoin. In fact, it is not what you want to discuss in your topic. It means your topic title is bad and misleading.
2111  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: How I Almost Gave Scammers Access To My wallet This Morning. on: July 09, 2022, 02:10:02 AM
Yes, this is a really good idea, but this can not apply to all airdrops, there are airdrops that require you hold a certain type of coin or token in your wallet to be eligible, in this type of airdrop, you have no choice but to participate with the wallet holding the coins or token that is required to make you eligible
Even so, you can create another wallet and send exact amount of that token to be eligible for that airdrop. I know some airdrops have at least 2 conditions: min amount of token, and min holding time (perhaps 4 weeks and above). If you want to join, and want to be safe, create a new wallet, send your token there at the time that is enough to meet holding period requirement between your deposit day and airdrop day, and wait.

In some airdrop, you have to claim it manually, have to give access to your wallet (approval). It is when fake airdrop and hackers can steal your money if you use your main wallet to do it.

2112  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: How I Almost Gave Scammers Access To My wallet This Morning. on: July 08, 2022, 01:48:17 PM
If you want to join airdrop (that I think waste of time0, you should use a single wallet for it.

If you use a wallet that you store big money for airdrop, some day you will be scammed and your money will be stolen. Even if you get scammed, money in wallet-for-airdrop should be small and much smaller than your main wallet so your loss will be smaller too.

Airdrop-wallet will save you, one way or another, and reduce your loss.

Telegram scams are the most obvious types of scams we have seen recently as you would be added to some fake groups without your wish and then they will promote some shitcoins there or send you links with lucrative offers and under greed or carelessness you click on them and rest work is done by them by taking control of your funds or you yourself deposit in their wallets.

So just have the settings that only your contacts can add your to group as by default it's set on for everyone which is risky as you are paraded by scammers in your telegram account.

Telegram>Settings>Privacy and security>Groups>My contacts
I know. If anyone need a more guides to avoid scam on Telegram.

Quote
This is safety step along with 2FA with TOTP methods but also remember most of them have authenticator installed on same device and in case it's gone your security steps also fail so be sure about the same.
Yeah. I have it too. You can also set up 2FA password.
2114  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin security tips for beginners on: July 08, 2022, 08:31:30 AM
Clicking on the links we see on internet is first step we should avoid as they can put virus in our device looking for funds in our wallets and before we know about it the wallet is drained out so stop clicking on links as your security step
  • Don't click on unknown links from people who don't know.
  • Don't click on strange links from people you know.
  • As always, set up 2FA for all of your accounts (email, Telegram, Discord, etc.) if they allow you to customize your account settings this way.
  • Restrict people who can add you to groups. The less exposure to potential scam groups, the less risk you will see and click on hazardous links.
  • Avoid any "too good to be true" offer from strangers. Very likely scam and hazardous links.
2115  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: why is bitcoin price important? on: July 08, 2022, 08:25:26 AM
for alot of people it seems like when bitcoin price is "high" they think that means it is succeeding more than when it is "low". but if we think about bitcoin's intended purpose, it doesn't matter what the price is as long as bitcoin can be transferred peer to peer without any centralized party being involved.
Because they have wrong approach and standpoint about Bitcoin. They participate in Bitcoin market for profit, with their naive speculation that they will get profit in near future, after a few weeks, few months or not longer than 1 or 2 years.

With this standpoint, they are speculating price of Bitcoin. It is not good but it is how the crowd come with FOMO and leave with panic.

They should adjust their standpoint and look at Bitcoin with its value, not its price. What is value of Bitcoin? Its use cases, its utility for people. I am sure use cases and utility for Bitcoin are increasing, not decreasing. Its value is growing despite of market ups and downs.
2116  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Now is the time to just wait for the price of Bitcoin to come down. on: July 08, 2022, 04:39:36 AM
Following this strategy in 2018 you'd buy at 10k, 5k and have another 25% in case it goes to 2,5kUSD but it never did. In this bear market you'd buy at $35k, $17.5k and have another 30% waiting in case it goes around 8.5k.
Good strategy that does not require you to time the market and to find its bottom.

Dollar Cost Averaging is a very good strategy in bear market because if you have belief that bull market will come back, matter is whether you spend whole of your capital for investment into Bitcoin as you wanted. Average price for your investment is important. You can use 50% of capital to buy at $20k, 25% at $15k and 25% at $10k, assume all these prices will be touched in bearish months.

You don't have to stress your eyes and spend lot of time to find market bottom. You don't have to worry to miss its bottom. Maybe your average price will be higher or lower than in perfect case you time in the market, but DCA makes your life more easily.
2117  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Crypto Firm Voyager Temporarily Suspends Withdrawals, Deposits, and Trading !!! on: July 08, 2022, 04:18:07 AM
They have filed for bankruptcy and what happens to those remaining funds from their customers?
When bankruptcy happens, you only can hope that you belong to customers who will get compensation. That is solely hope.

In order to avoid panic (when crisis happens), uncertainty (when crisis is on-going and not handled) and hopeless hope (when bankruptcy occurs), avoid to store your coins on third party services. If you want to cash out, do it and withdraw your money as soon as possible.

If you store your money on third party sites too long, and feel that you are completely safe based on their past reputation, that contains risk. Black swan events can kill any company and you can be one of victims.

The more accurate expression is airgapped that seeds did not connect to the Internet and will not connect (Air gap (networking)).
Some of very old guides about air-gapped wallets
One of worst practice is making backup, exclusively password and save it in email, Dropbox, Google Drive. Storing personal and vulnerable things on third-party services are very risky practice.
2119  Economy / Exchanges / Re: BITSTAMP exchange biased rule that chased users away on: July 07, 2022, 01:00:37 PM
Cryptocurrency exchanges are the thorn in the cryptocurrency market's flesh. Though, they are centralized platforms operating for a decentralized entity. But, they fail to keep themselves away from biased decisions.
It is their exchanges, their lands and they have their own rules. I believe that none of us spend time to read all points in ToS (Terms of Service) of any platform. That means you will be trapped by their ToS sooner or later. Don't say it as biased strategy or decision.

Quote
Recently, on July 5, Bitstamp posted that inactive accounts will pay a $10 bill on their next transaction.
It is still good. If you know exchanges have rules to close account of user if it is inactively after a very long time, 2 year or longer ie. I remembered I read it on Poloniex's ToS in 2017 or 2018.

Exchange can update their ToS and you will have to accept it. A good exchange will give you a window time to withdraw if you don't accept with their new policy. Scam exchange will take advantage of new policy to steal your fund.

First, when I read your topic title, I thought you have some tips for newbies. After reading your topic, you're looking for advice from others.

You should read following topics and improve your topic title next times.

now I'm considering stacking my fiat to buy in on the bottom of this bear cycle which I think is yet to come. Would this be a wise decision?
Don't time the market. If you think the market now is in bottom, what will you feel if it is not a bottom at all, in next few months?

First, you will have unexpected disappointment, negative feeling, etc.
Second, if you have wrong mind at beginning, you might make stupid bad (like loan huge money to bet, use high leverage to bet)

The market is in accumulation time and you still have lot of time to make your accumulation. Just don't bet and don't time the market.
