Hi i just started mining monero.can i solo mine using gpu?if not..whats the best pool to use?

Solo mining is currently CPU only.

See list of pools in first post of this thread.

I tried solo mining monero overnight using this pool http://xmr.farm/ ,about 7 hrs, I dont get any xmr at all.Is this normal?

 Pending Balance: 0.000000000000 XMR
 Total Paid: 0.000000000000 XMR

Slow pony but I'll post this anyway.

You either solo mine or mine on a pool.
I just checked your pool's site and the last block they found was 3 days ago and you wont be paid till they find a block and you will get paid according to the percentage of hashes you contributed to the pool during time it took them to find a block.  They  finding a block on average every 4 days.  Using a small pool means you get paid less often but when you get paid it is a larger amount compared to a large pool.  On average it is the same.  With the pool I'm on the average for finding a block is ~15 hrs and it has varied from as long as 4 days to as short as 7 minutes.

For the ignorant the hex characters are the numbers 0 through 9 and the letters a through f.  Is that correct?  Are the letters case dependent?

Since when does a skyscraper collapse from fire?

A hot enough fire weakens metal.  Jet fuel, diesel or heating oil burn very hot.  If there is enough fuel to burn for an extended period of time things happen.

What caused the twin towers to collapse?  It wasn't the direct hit from the airplanes or the weight of the airplanes on the structure.  Without the extended fire from the jet fuel the buildings wouldn't have collapsed.

If you have an extended hot fire at the base of a building it will also cause a structural failure and then there is nothing to hold the building up.

The buildings that collapsed experienced very unique and unusual circumstances.

i5-3450 windows 7

Downloaded both the 06-09-2014 Wolf miner and the LucasJones miner.  Wolf is 5% faster according to the numbers the miners display.

I'm on a small pool and their HR has doubled even though the number of miners is virtually the same.

Then again my hr displayed on the pool is >50% more than it was yesterday.

Or a sociopathically delusional one.
In case of a global Ebola outbreak, who gives a fuck about our little money experiment?

History shows that civilization doesn't stop due to global anomalies, wars, disease, financial metldowns etc. Neither will Bitcoin - which is far more than our "little money experiment". Show will go on - as always. The only question is whether we'll be part of the show or not...

Quote
Sound money will be weapons, ammo, canned food and medicines. The odds for survival in such a situation are more in favour of the most cruel and fittest men than in favour a bunch of bitcoin nerds like you and me, so pray your gods we will never have to witness such a catastrophic event in our lifetime.

Guns and canned food won't really save one from a pandemic virus. Neither will medicine (for other stuff).

Quote
True and in any catastrophic event , common things required for sustaining life will be much valuable than any crypto.

And how will you buy them, if government has nullified -by law- the value of paper currency in favor of electronic currencies, as to "prevent people from spreading the virus"?

Either gold/silver, or cryptos. Or plain' old bartering of one thing with another. We'll see how it goes, if it ever materializes as a global eventuality. Let's hope that it doesn't though.

Ebola is spread only through the exchange of bodily fluids.  Therefore it doesn't spread as easily as the flu which you can catch through airborne water droplets when somebody coughs.  Getting rid of paper currency doesn't do anything.  Remember not to touch your eyes as this is the only part of your body that exposes the inside of your body and therefore is the primary gateway for all types of nasties.

Since those bids were place 40 minutes ago not one trade has happened and no more bids placed above it or on the sell side.  Standoff!!

Every day that Monero is under Darkcoin is a day that gives you an opportunity to buy cheap coins.

What if one doesn't have Bitcoin with which to buy?

the feeling that you get when buying XMR with DRK is amazing.

Sounds more like heroine ;-)

the ups and downs that cryptocurrency provides is much like hardcore drugs - riding high on a rally then the harsh comedown after. nothing else comes close.

with that i say, brothers let us not be discouraged with this recent dump. we are the pioneers building a new economy here.

I had a momentary negative feeling when it started going down but then all was calm.  I did however miss the bottom as my bid was 0.000008 too low.
Someone just but a 23 btc buy at 365.

I must add heroine to my health care proxy.

I was about to post about this!

The importance statement is this : "during the dev discussion portion following the announcement we'll be available to take questions on IRC in #monero-dev on Freenode."

It means its at the very least an announcement technical by nature, otherwise why take questions afterwards? this means no cryptsy, no website, no gui (database thingy stuffy problem? ive no idea what i'm talking about lol) -- personally i'm betting on i2p integration ! remember that a few missives ago there were mentions of a partnership with i2p and anoncoin and talks about a fundation of some sort in order to make things smoother.

Or database thingy is done and this is the announcement.

I2p was what I was thinking.  Whatever it is, +1 to all devs as usual!

cant wait for xmr gambling sites to pop up so we can bet about this ridiculous things:)

I bet all I own vs your 10 XMR that the database thingy wont be announced as done this Friday.
2191  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [XMR] rpietila Monero Economics thread on: August 05, 2014, 06:25:51 AM
I suppose I should start offering clients of my small business valuation service the option to pay me in XMR with a hefty discount.

Hmm.. I am a contract worker.  Actually, a statutory employee in the U.S. at this point, but in fact on contract.  I can switch to PFTE if I wish to do so.  This would cut out an agency middle-man, who has been raking in $150/diem for my head, doing nothing whatsoever but trans-billing, since 2008.

Since I have an option here, I might exercise it by submitting to the agency an ultimatum:  I get paid in XMR or I terminate the contract and go permanent full-time, thus cutting them out.  That would mean they have to buy USD 1200 in XMR every non-holiday week-day, forever -- but they get to keep the $150/diem rake.

It also means I would quickly become a net seller of XMR.

I rather like the exercise part. I rather dislike the forces sales part.  Hmm...

As long as my credit is good, I am a buyer long past the point of despair.  When I start to feel the fear and depression, I cheer myself up by buying more.  I take some amphetamine and a shot of whiskey, if that's what it takes.

Until people have obligations which can only be discharged in monero, there are no forced buyers, and volatility extremes will persist.  Just about the only thing that can give you a permanent loss is selling - especially forced sales from leverage.

Do you get paid in XMR for this kind of fanatical posting too? a lot of words to say very little.
XMR is a decent alt-coin but please.. hardly warrants talk like this yet.

Obviously aminorex thinks XMR is more than a decent alt-coin.  You may think his writing is fluff but then again you would probably think a Silkie is merely fluff.  His writing actually exposes himself quite a bit.  Maybe you just don't like right clicking his words.  For me right clicking is always exciting.

Oh no you say, not another convoluted poster.

I don't pay or get paid.
2192  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: August 04, 2014, 10:58:56 PM
Not every lottery is for millions. People spend a lot of money on daily drawings for smaller amounts, scratch off tickets with $500-$10000 max prizes, etc. Go into a casino and most slot machines don't have million dollar payoffs (thousands are common) and you see lots and lots of people playing them.

You know I started my life here at bct in the gambling section. Wink

Intermittent reinforcement.  That is the key to scratch offs and slot machines.  It is the small random winnings (while they are actually losing) that keep them coming back or staying for the possible bigger payment.  I knew somebody who said they found a good slot machine.  They said "I put 3 coins in and it gives 2 back".  I said, no it took one, to which they replied, oh.

So either it is the promise of a very big payout with proof thereof or constant random reinforcement with the promise of something bigger.  It seems to me that mining with your CPU gives neither.

Hola Moneritos y Moneritas,
I put together a python script to plot the pools by their hashrate. Here is a recent output for the larger pools:

And here is output for smaller pools:

PCFiL has started running the script on his pool server, so you can always check updated versions here: http://xmr.poolto.be/#alternative
Please consider sending some hash his way for helping people see who has all the hash on the network.

The script is available at https://gist.github.com/jwinterm/c417d05d819bbefd22d0 if anyone else is interested, and please let me know if you have any questions or comments Smiley

Nice.  But this looks like all the known public pools have over 90% of the HR.  I added the HR #s on the chart and they equal the estimated network rate.  Does this mean that the combined % for solominers, private pools and botnets is <10%?
2194  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: August 04, 2014, 09:33:36 PM
For a one dollar lottery ticket I have a very small probability of winning millions.  What is the upside of mining with my CPU and would that be enough to entice people?

2195  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: August 04, 2014, 05:54:51 AM
Why Monero price is down  Huh

In my opinion, classic pump & dump.  Developers hope to repeat it again (it hasn't passed on Mint). They've invested a lot of money and now they want to get profit.

According to the news XMR devs were busy and now are going to implement new features. IMO, this news are rumors to pump XMR price so they'll be able to dump it soon .

You heard it here first.  The reason the price is down is because it's being pumped Huh

It's down if you bought higher.  As I write this the price of Monero is 91% of it's average price.

24-hour Volume: 32 BTC

That was from a single 29 btc buy which didn't even move the price.  Yes somebody bought 94,559 BBR which is 10% of the current supply.

VERY Interesting interview with R Kurzweil .. also there is a brief bit about Bitcoin and there is some discussion of decentralisation.

Bitcoin @ 4 minutes and 11 minutes

whole vid is good though.

Exponential perspective.

Anyone watch the video?

Raises hand.

Fuck virtual.  I like to smell real flowers.  Did you know that every color pansy has a subtlety different smell?
Every cat has a different feel to their fur.

Years ago I had 2 dogs that lived in the city and had only been to the suburbs.  The first time I took them on the 4 hour ride to my country home the following happened.  When we left the city and were in the suburbs their interest went up.  When we got to the country they were very excited, this was the first time experiencing this.  When we turned off the highway and onto the dirt road that followed the stream up the mountain they started to vibrate with excitement.  They knew it was right.  This was the world that they had evolved in since they were blue green algae billions of years ago and it resonated within them.

Currency is an invention of man so having it be virtual is ok because it already was.

I like to walk but I still use a car... even a plane... or a helicopter...  same as I like to read paper books, but also have an ipad and use pdfs...

Point is not that you will have t use virtual but that it will be there..

The few areas that Ray K mentions in the video are only a few "fun" and quite trivial examples in the bigger scheme, and also the reason I posted the video was more just to say world is changing and the problems we have today may not be the problems we have tomorrow..

But I hear what you are sayng... I love to walk and trek and get out into nature... and feel and smell and touch nature, people , animals, touch and smell the flowers and the coffee too : )

Though if you are receiving the digital information directly to your senses, and the quality was good  then you would not be able to tell the difference once the tech was good enough...  in fact you could be living in a "simulation" right now (check out simulation theory)

Would my dogs have vibrated if they received digital information that was good enough?

Remember that the brain works far differently than a computer.  I'm sure you know but there are others in this virtual room.

Back on topic.  After delaying it several weeks I was forced to sell a small amount.  You should therefore see a price rise.

Excuse the intrusion, but why on earth would you recommend coinbase? Users should be in sole possession of their keys. Reddit is full of reports about coinbase holding BTC hostage due to overblown kyc/aml shit.

It seems coinbase is the new PayPal. Don't recommend it!

"I think I should test my wallet by typing my seed into a friends computer to see if it works"

At this point, I would think that no amount of explanation could save this person's ability to secure his bitcoins.

At least with Coinbase, they protect your bitcoins in a similar fashion to a bank, so most people are used to that.

Hi guys Smiley

First off I'd like to thank dabura667 for his advice.  It worked.

My life had been in turmoil for about a year and is just now calming down.  It was during the turmoil that I originally set up my second wallet hence me incorrectly copying my password.  It took me 2 weeks to even find my seed and incorrect password Embarrassed

My friend already had access to my seed and password for my first wallet in a secure location.  I would trust them with my life.  I wanted to use my friends computer so as not to lose any part of the existing electrum info that was on my comp by reinstalling electrum.

Was the concern about my friend or their computer?

From dabura667's original responses I could imagine his exasperation to my questions Kiss
