461  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BYTEBALL: Totally new consensus algorithm + private untraceable payments on: February 20, 2018, 06:17:52 AM
the community feel bitter,i wouldn't be surprised if someone fork Byteball in the near future.
Yeah, a fork would do well in this environment where users' wishes are not considered.

edit: censorship?

Dear Tonych,

There is much I was hoping for in your announcement,

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1608859.msg30564528#msg30564528

and I love that you seem to be showing at least some flexibility with regard to Distributions as ByteBall grows.

But the Airdrop Issue has been handled clumsily with the potential to severely damage the ByteBall Platform Reputation and Community.

Please consider immediately issuing a release stating that one of the most important reasons for cancelling the Planned Airdrop was missed, and not mentioned, namely - The Cryptopia Situation.

It would after all be unethical and wrong for Byteball to go ahead with the Airdrop, given the potential loss of millions of Bytes from their rightful owners.
Doing this helps take the edge off the awkward and clumsy handling of the Airdrop Distribution issue, and not only saves from potential embarrassment, but also honors the previously implied Airdrop by having "one last drop" at a later time - once the Cryptopia Situation is made right.

It's a great compromise, and it goes a long way to not pissing off half of your community.

If you guys are really smart, you can turn this PR disaster into something really positive - potentially even a marketing coup!

Seize the day and promise to roll out upgrades to ByteBall that include a new and improved roadmap, and please make a commitment to help build, respect and value your community more. We need to feel that we are a part of this process.

ByteBall cannot succeed without a Strong & Vibrant Community - surely you realize this?

(Where is Eli? - did you not consult with him first before making this announcement?)

No matter... Given the circumstances, ByteBall Did the Right Thing when the Cryptopia Situation is taken into account.

.

UPDATE #1: Obviously adding the Cryptopia Situation to the announcement is a time sensitive thing that gets weaker with the passage of time - so far it looks like no one cares enough about the offended members of the community to do anything to help smooth things over - sad.

UPDATE #2: Some of you might find it interesting that I made a very similar post on the ByteBall bitcointalk.org thread which immediately got deleted by a moderator - no reason given.

Why was my post deleted? What was so offensive? Did I not make some valid points and provide a decent suggestion to manage the optics of the announcement?

As a sincere ByteBall fan who is only seeking the best for the project, I find this kind of censorship deeply disturbing.

Thank you byteball3r!

I appreciate what you did by publishing my censored post. (I go by CryptoBest on Reddit)

There is no question that this matter could have been handled with much more sophistication and sensitivity
- what value is there in degrading an already weak and divided community?

Tony seems remarkably out of touch with one of ByteBalls most important assets - the Community.

ByteBall won't succeed if it continues in this manner - no matter how good the technology.

Censorship is worrying. Not listening to the voice of the community is one thing; trying to silence the voice reeks of authoritarianism.
Even if you have blatantly negative posts (this wasn't one), the marketing and PR team should be able to handle it? After all, doesn't Byteball have somebody in charge of marketing now?
462  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-02-19] Malta to Give “Peace of Mind” to Crypto Companies on: February 20, 2018, 05:58:13 AM
Government Will Provide “Legal Certainty and Trust”

Ha ha. It is to avoid the 'trust' that people have to place in banks and governments that cryptocurrencies were developed. Why should you trust anybody in a decentralized world?
It will be interesting to see what happens when a government-certified' exchange gets hacked. I would love to see the composition of the Malta Digital Innovation Authority. Would the regulators accept some liability for anything untoward happening at certified companies?
463  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BitBay OFFICIAL BITBAY Thread Smart Contracts Decentralized Markets Rolling Peg on: February 19, 2018, 10:42:59 PM

The new client GUI scheduled for mid of next month might make life easier for noobs, but is it really something worth putting on a roadmap for a cryptocurrency. The focus should be more on the functionality of the coin, not the eternal GUI. The most important bits would be the release of the final smart contract template in Q2.
464  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Trading Platforms: Are They Safe? on: February 19, 2018, 09:50:03 PM
Trading Platforms: Are They Safe? Huh
A number of trading platforms have technical failures, insufficient security protection, easy hacking, or weak systems that fail to meet their obligations to users. These failures make them an easy prey for hackers, especially for denial of service (DDoS) attacks. This type of hacking aims to temporarily drop the site, by overloading the site's servers with many orders in a limited time.
More secure is to save all your assets from encrypted currencies in local or hardware, not to leave them on a trading platform that controls them. In the event of any piracy on this platform, your assets can not be harmed if you have a personal system.
"A final order on the level of platform security, users should be sure that there is: binary authentication, and ensure that domain domain is stored in their bookmark, to avoid any impersonation attempts."  Huh

There is a chance that trading platforms (exchanges), no matter how strong their security practices are, get hacked. It is up to you to minimize this risk. You can store your coins in your wallet and move them to an exchange only when you need to make a trade. Of course, this gives rise to transaction costs and is not convenient.
Another way is to use only decentralized exchanges. This minimizes the risk of a rogue exchange running away with your coins or getting hacked.
465  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BYTEBALL: Totally new consensus algorithm + private untraceable payments on: February 19, 2018, 07:10:03 AM
Insanity: take 3 months, do nothing, schedule ‘tentative’ Airdrop, cancel just before due date.... via Twitter...

And people wonder what’s wrong with the marketing of this coin...

Can you believe this total absence of a visible resemblance of an actual plan? For people less versed in Byteball ‘s particular idea of ‘marketing’, this is a disaster.

Good thing is that Cryptopia has more days for my GBYTE to remain stuck  Grin

In defense of the airdrop getting cancelled, there was a disclaimer that this 'tentative' airdrop might be postponed or cancelled. So news of the shift to other distribution methods should not come as a surprise to anybody.
For existing byte holders, this should come as a positive news. The price invariably tanks after every distribution (which more than compensates for the free bytes they receive.)
466  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Cricket match prediction discussions on: February 19, 2018, 06:24:13 AM
They dropped Kohli at 10 and also didn't appeal for Dhawan's catch.  They could have won this match if they got that both right

Actually, Kohli didn't score many runs in this match but Dhawan's catch not sure at what stage they dropped it has happened. If that one was at the beginning of his innings then it would have been helped them to put pressure on Indian batsman. But these kind of things are common and overall Indians played a better game than SA to win this match. This kind of performance on the overseas pitch will give Indians more confidence to play world cup matches in England because they were not winning many matches in overseas.

India set a solid total for South Africa to chase, but South Africa did look close to getting there, even without big guns like DeVilliers playing. There was a period when Hendricks and Behardien got a partnership going, which seemed to keep South Africa on track. Bhuveneshwar just broke the back of South Africa's chase, when 4 wickets fell in 1 over of his.
467  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-02-19] Indians Look to Buy Bitcoin Overseas as Regulations Tighten on: February 19, 2018, 06:18:35 AM
If you do have a friend overseas who is willing to buy bitcoins for you, then it does make sense. It is not just because of the increasing regulations, it is because bitcoins are cheaper in international exchanges compared to India. There is no let up in demand in India, in spite of the tough stand taken by the Government. So bitcoins usually trade at a premium in India. With people looking to friends abroad to buy Bitcoin, this should decrease.
468  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: ~BTC in Medical Industry on: February 18, 2018, 12:21:27 PM
There are no real reasons which separate the use of Bitcoin in the medical industry, compared to other industries. Hospitals would invariably use a payment processor to convert bitcoins to fiat, because most of their expenses will be in fiat. The only reason I can think of is for medical tourism, where foreigners do not have to pay a forex surcharge apart from bank fees, to pay their bills. In the case of Bitcoin, it is just the payment processor fees.
469  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-02-16] Trader at Chicago Firm Stole Millions in BTC,Faces 20 Year Sentence on: February 18, 2018, 12:02:16 PM
The case is the first involving Bitcoin, but traders at financial institutions have tried similar stunts over the years. Existing financial institutions have developed a deep set of checks and balances to monitor traders. Occasionally, rogue traders do get the better of banks, but at least some checks are in place. Unfortunately, Bitcoin is a new asset class and some trading companies are going to get burnt before monitoring systems are in place.
470  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Cricket match prediction discussions on: February 18, 2018, 08:28:24 AM
New Zealand won the toss and elected to field first but that didn't go well until now because England has scored 194 runs in 20 for seven wickets loss. Now they need to score around 10 runs per over and which is not so easy to score against a good bowling team. NZ also got good hitters so they may give surprise to England bowlers but needs to see who will dominate this match.

T20 matches seem to be exploding with runs these days. Even after England have scored 194 runs, New Zealand seem on track to get there. Colin Munro has scored a 50 in just 18 balls. Even after his fall, New Zealand seem to be going steady.  They have scored 94/1 after the end of 10 overs and are easily maintaining the required run rate.
471  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will cryptos be so volatile forever? on: February 17, 2018, 02:11:16 PM
Volatility is the friend of traders.

That is true, but it is not just traders who make up the Bitcoin ecosystem. Given the existing volatility in price, they certainly make up the most vocal lot. The other players like merchants, daily users, long-term investors hate this volatility. If Bitcoin appreciates slowly and steadily in value, you can be sure of attracting a lot more users.
472  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin dominance - where do you expact it? on: February 17, 2018, 01:56:16 PM
Hi.

I am quite new. But i really love this forum!
Great job to everybody.

Many people are measuring there money in their fiat, lets say doller, euro etc.
But the main thing here is,... beating the market. Means for me, trying to make more bitcoins with investing / trading whatever in compare to bitcoin.

So when I entered the market the bitcoin dominance was around 60%
Now we have around 36% market dominance.

Where is your prediction for this summer / end of the year,... and in the near future?

I think we will have to look at the dominance of Bitcoin + All its forks. Bitcoin is not the flavour of the month for people investing in cryptos and its dominance has dropped in the last few months. I still expect it to recover to over 50% within a year and stay there. Given the number of people who have invested in Bitcoin, I do not expect it to drop below 40% in the long term.
473  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Cricket match prediction discussions on: February 17, 2018, 11:35:29 AM
India is playing like world champions and it looks like Virat Kohli is in the best form of his life, the only problem is that the middle order is not getting much chance to perform in the series and what happens if Kohli looses his form when it comes to a major tournament like a world cup which could affect the entire team.It is one of the best over seas performance from India out side Asia .
Australia Vs New Zealand was one of the best T20 i have seen in a long time, the odds were crazy when Australia started chasing and i did not expect them to win in the beginning but things changes in the first ten overs.
Virat is in tremendous form and he is shining in foreign pitch it will help him to play well in coming world cup. look like he will cross Sachin record more centuries in ODI matches in within 2 years. and yes your point is also correct if he lost his form then the team will suffer a lot so he must give chance to other players to keep there form alive.

Virat's sublime form was the prime reason for India winning this match and the series comfortably against South Africa. Apart from the South African's failure to read the wrist spinners, I think the form of Virat Kohli means that they narrowly avoided a white wash in this series. Sachin's record of most ODI centuries does seem to be under threat. There are far more ODIs played these days, compared to test matches.
474  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-02-17] SEC Suspends Trading of Three Companies With Ties to Cryptocurrency on: February 17, 2018, 11:28:19 AM
Halting ICO issuances because they have 'security-like' characteristics is fine. But companies which have followed all regulations and are listed companies should not be penalized. Stopping trading in these companies just because the SEC has doubts over the value of their assets seems to be stretching regulation too far. Investors value companies based on future growth potential and present value of their expected cash flows, not based on assets. The SEC should stop trying to micromanage things.
475  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin suddenly became a "storm shelter" when stocks plunged on: February 15, 2018, 11:20:11 PM
A paradox is that digital money - the kind of property that can be considered the world's most vicious change - becomes a stable fortress if compared to the slumps of the global stock market.
According to Bloomberg data, bitcoin rose to a one-month low from the lowest four-month lows it hit on Feb. 6 to rebound 53% to $ 9,069. Overall, the S & P 500 and Dow Jones were down more than 5 percent last week, blowing up all of their gains since the start of the year. Not only US stocks, emerging markets and money markets are also plummeting. Meanwhile, short-term US Treasuries jumped as investors fled from risky assets to find safe havens.
Immediately, bitcoin advocates have quickly praised the important feature of digital money: the asset is completely immune to the turmoil of the vast financial market, not under the constraints of any public sector, country or central bank, and therefore can become a paradise when the market collapses. And although chaos is something that can easily be found at bitcoin prices, last week US stocks have beaten the biggest currency in this respect.
The drop of 70% from the peak of nearly $ 20,000 from bitcoin has prompted many analysts to comment that the final bubble of digital money has broken. However, at least if you look at price fluctuations in the past week, it can be said that it is too early to say so.

If you lose 70% of your value like Bitcoin did, then there are bound to be some bouncebacks. Citing one of these bouncebacks as proof of Bitcoin becoming a stable fortress is wishful thinking, in my opinion. You need years of data backed up by statistical analysis before anything of that sort can be claimed.
476  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: KYC requirement from ICOs will open up a whole news area of scam on: February 15, 2018, 10:33:45 PM
The basic idea of crypto currency is de-centralization and anonymity. I understand that ICO will have to comply with the regulatory requirements, but isn't it directly challenging the basic idea of crypto currency? If KYC is required for every ICO, then the whole idea of de-centralization and anonymity is gone. The ICO requirement should be the other way around. Means, every ICO should provide a proper KYC documentation to the public so that investors can be assured that they are not dealing with a bot or a child operating from his home computer.

While your concerns are valid, they may not be shared by a large number of ICO investors. Ultimately, the free market will decide how to solve this problem. If there are no investors in a project which asks for KYC details, then ICOs will stop asking for KYC documents. We need not fool ourselves that they are doing it only to satisfy regulatory concerns - they always have the option of raising money in a crypto-friendly jurisdiction.
477  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Cricket match prediction discussions on: February 15, 2018, 10:21:01 PM

BAN vs SL, Bangladesh won the toss and elected bat first, let's see how much runs they will score in 20 overs.

The match was full entertaining Sri Lanka won this match by 6 wickets. Bangladesh bat first and made good score 193/5. This is not a small target in T20 match. But Sri Lanka batting was unbelievable they chased this target in just 16.4 overs with the loss of 4 wickets. Congratulation Sri Lanka.

Cricket is supposed to be an equal battle between bat and ball, but it certainly doesn't seem to be that way. When almost 400 runs are scored in a T20 match, featuring 2 teams who are near the bottom, you tend to wonder. Sri Lanka might have been the favourites, but nobody expected them to chase down a score of 193 with more than 3 overs to spare. The pitches should be more sporting in nature and offer bowlers a chance.
478  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2018-02-15]Divorcing couples may clash over Bitcoin on: February 15, 2018, 09:53:41 PM
Divorcing couples are being warned to disclose all their assets amid fears that some may use digital currencies such as Bitcoin to hide their wealth.

Lawyers suggest that the anonymous nature of these digital currencies could prove tempting to those involved in an acrimonious split.

One solicitor said she had seen the "first wave" of cases where crypto-currencies were listed as assets.

Courts have wide-ranging powers to investigate hidden assets.

This could include a court appointing a digital forensic expert to analyse data when it is suspected someone is trying to hide money in cryptocurrency,

http://www.bbc.com/news/business-43070849

Cryptocurrencies may be anonymous, but there is always a trail when you shift your wealth 'into' cryptocurrencies. Otherwise, they are no different from a numbered Swiss bank account in the good old days. If you do decide to hide your wealth (using cryptocurrencies or otherwise) in front of a court, you are breaking the law and taking a big risk. It is just not worth it.
479  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BYTEBALL: Totally new consensus algorithm + private untraceable payments on: February 15, 2018, 09:48:53 PM
I should have exchanged my GBYTE over the exchange bots we have on the wallet. I should have never used cryptopia in the first place. I think we should start being more supportive over those dex we have on byteball

Isn't the bot on the Byteball wallet use Changelly to actually effect the exchange? If that is the case, I am not sure it will still work. Changelly seems to have removed support for Byteball.
The fee of 0.75% for the bots also has a damping effect, given that exchanges charge almost negligible fees.
480  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [GBYTE] Byteball Speculation on: February 13, 2018, 08:06:17 PM
I wish them luck with the new distribution but there's no way I'm linking my ID to any one individual address.

Aside from not having a clue who jumio is, I have no plans to stick with only one wallet.
This is a step backwards for privacy and anonymity. Having your personal identity linked to a platform most of us have barely heard of

This is only if you want to take part in the airdrop. If you would rather not have the $12 ($20 air drop - $8 Verification fees), you are welcome to give this pass. But as Tony says, more and more ICOs now seem to have a requirement to complete KYC of their investors. Eventually, linking real life ID will become compulsory if you want to invest in ICOs.

Although GBYTE would be the only DAG verified coin for ICOs (which is great), KYC for ICOs is blasphemy and idiotic at best. Why would you centralize personal information on everybody? So that a hacker's wet dream comes true and they can attain that infromation. Has any central authority ever in the history of mankind been able to keep KYC data safe? Answer is no and perhaps they will for a while, but eventually they will get hacked. I will never participate in any KYC ICO, it turns me off massively and all you should be worried about your data too.

I do not think KYC for ICOs will be driven by the coin developers themselves. It will be driven by governments and regulators in the country that the ICO is raising funds. Cryptos are kind of small compared to overall financial markets, but as they grow, regulators will impose KYC norms to prevent money laundering, tax evasion, terrorist financing, etc. Even the famed Swiss Banks, which were known across the world for their secrecy, have folded and are sharing information with government authorities.
