OP, the first post tells in at least 2 places (plus a third in the sig campaign) that the Tor mirror is https://... but it's not working with https, it works, like all Tor addresses I know, on http.
You may want to fix. This one does open with my Tor browser: http://[banned mixer]
So I'm here... trying to find out what's wrong (although I checked the links in bbcode and I see that the mirror address is correct).

Did you check the Tor address will Tor browser? Did you copy paste it as https an worked??!
I had to change to http to work.
782  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoiners are unaware. The mining algorithm wasn't designed to advance science. on: April 23, 2023, 05:35:26 PM
NeuroticFish-I have a Ph.D. in Mathematics,

For start your should know that "waving" "badges" means nothing on the internet.

Then, if you think you need to tell about phd in order to - I don't know - give more weight to your so called proof means that it's you who should improve your interaction skills.

Plus: if you think that implying that someone is stupid will make your point correct then I'm sorry for you.

There will always be some industries hungry for energy. The number of such industries keeps rising over decades. So a more sane direction for your efforts should be to get better sources of energy. Convincing any industry to give up has no real chances for success.
Then the energy Bitcoin uses will no longer be a headline.

Then, since Bitcoin cannot be mined with any kind of computing power, if I'd have free electricity, I would have no issues keeping a computer computing for science overnight.

Bitcoin computing is not feasible to be redirected. Being a rush for finding the blocks, where only one pool wins one block, anyone diverting computing power towards anything else gives the competing miners an extra chance. And then then the miners will leave a pool with such a policy.

So, if you indeed have a phd, I expect you focus on directions that can bring results. And remember, internet doesn't care who you are.

783  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoiners are unaware. The mining algorithm wasn't designed to advance science. on: April 23, 2023, 02:49:45 PM
If you come to me and say I AM A BITCOINER, I will immediately distrust you and regard you as a science hater.

I will just come and tell you that
1. You seem to not fully understand what is bitcoin mining for, hence you propose to fix things you don't understand.
2. You seem completely unaware what this amount of energy means in the grand scheme of things.

PS. I dare you convince the companies (and casinos) turn off 90% of their electricity based advertising then come back preaching.

OK, so you can earn a lot of money, with no initial investment and in an easy way. On top of that we have to give you our ID.

It sounds to me like a scam or collaboration in something illegal.

It's most probably the "job" called "money mule". Somebody gets money (most probably dirty money) under his name and buys crypto to clear those funds.
If the authorities catch the network, the money mule name will be the first to ask this and that.
If the exchanges freeze the money, the "employers" of the money mule may or may not have understanding for that.

The problem with Blue Wallet is that it does not work with hardware wallets and for Lightning Network it only ofers a custodial wallet. Probably this is also why it is not listed as recommended on bitcoin.org. Electrum, on the other side, is recommended on bitcoin.org.

Just a small heads up: BlueWallet was/is closing the LN feature. The news about closing came in... February I think, I don't know when will they close the feature, but imho it's no longer a good idea to keep money in their (custodial) LN service.

He is spending full inputs and moving them into batches of ~90 BTC

Indeed, then it's most probably the original owner and he knows what he's doing.
Still the other scenarios can remain - more or less - on the table, from splitting for heirs (it doesn't have to be 3 heirs, the heirs don't have to get the same amount) to splitting for hardware wallets or simply keeping a couple of millions in various places scattered over the world (there was a family already claiming to do so or years).

Also this scenario also makes a lot of sense (and can add to the story) :

the owner has more than one Bitcoin address, and could have been using them all those years.

That's an interesting way of doing it. Just curious how would the electrum wallet know what the balance of the public key was if it is not connected to the internet in some way? I tried doing that in the past and I could not sign of on a tx as the electrum was not able to determine the balance on the public key without connecting to the internet in some way.

That's why the way I posted you use two seperate electrums, one as a hot wallet and the other in cold storage....the hot wallet one will tell the cold storage one the bitcoin balance without the cold storage one ever being exposed on the internet.

I also use two wallets (but I guess that something is wrong with me and I forgot that part of the steps, sorry about that).
The online wallet is re-created from the address (hence watch only wallet), the transport stick got the unsigned tx to one direction (tx created and saved from the online wallet) and the signed tx (from the cold wallet) to the other direction.

The difference is that in "my" setup the daily use computer + 2 USB sticks (or even one if you know how to partition it) can do the job. While I can always find around me 1-2 USB sticks, all the dead phones I have are.. too dead.

I will look but I think we have several threads explaining a myriad of ways to do this.

That's correct. Maybe those threads are old (or more related to cold storage than collectibles), but they are there. Still, it's not a too common topic, hence one more, after so much time, doesn't hurt.

I am sure I did explain the steps at least once in the past much better/clearer myself...
789  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [INFO] SAFEST WAY TO SWEEP YOUR COINS? PLEASE SHARE YOUR WAY AS WELL on: April 22, 2023, 07:07:18 PM
I've never used the actual sweep feature.

When I had to sweep coins from an old school paper wallet I just restored it into an Electrum on a live OS (on USB stick) without internet. Pretty much the easiest cold storage setup.
A second USB stick I've used for getting the signed tx onto an online system where I've broadcasted it.

Interesting that here no-one mentioned the top reason Reddit users did
- 10 years in jail ?  Grin

Yep, this is a good one.
I would add: what if the original owner has died (or just thinking about death and inheritance) and now his money got split between members of his family?
Or what if somebody has read (this late, I know, but it happens) Luke's story and decided to split his funds and maybe also keep them into more secure ways (eg. HW)?
791  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: A short review on Cryptocurrency pump and dump scheme on: April 22, 2023, 10:17:11 AM
talks about pumping a particular crypto

Yes, this is a risk, especially in the case of coins with low cap, maybe low liquidity too.
It's something the regulators have to address, because indeed, it's not right. But, historically, I think that the stocks too had this kind of problems many many years ago.
However, doesn't this belong to altcoins?

Bitcoin should be much safer against this kind of attacks. Not 100%, but still, I expect one such group needs really big funds to pull this on bitcoin with money alone. However, you'll learn that pump and dump schemes can these days also involve a great amount of social engineering (from FUD to posts even like your very own!) and inside jobs too (wash trading), but that's no longer gray area, it's plain illegal.

1. We are not responsible for your funds on the account.

I like the fact that you at least are honest about this.
Plus: I am not convinced that this is a legal service, hence I would not rule out this topic getting removed.

Thank you both for the kind words.

Although I think that it was also luck involved (the stars have aligned right), the achievement had its fair share of hard work.
I wish you both get there too, and fast. It's just some more quality posts away  Wink

795  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Use ledger nano s with android device on: April 21, 2023, 07:34:27 PM
btw, i had ledger live and electrum installed on my phone and they both support hw wallets.

Unless I'm missing some new changes, Electrum for Android doesn't support HW.
Just look up my post for the wallets I've used with my Ledger on Android.

About the cable I don't know what is wrong, but it looks to me it's not a working otg/data cable.
I used an adapter from normal USB (A) to USBC and I use the stock Ledger cable with the adapter and it works. With the previous phone I used the same Ledger S with the same cable, just the adapter was USB (A) to microUSB.
796  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin to cash with simple steps. on: April 19, 2023, 05:34:57 PM
I highly doubt we need a guide on how to convert Bitcoin to fiat, a simple search would reveal may options of doing this.

The fact that there are a lot of options a search would reveal is not enough. Especially if it's a generic search over the internet, I'll expect to see there quite a fair amount of scam sites advertised before the really good methods are shown. Plus many do put centralized exchanges in the higher positions of their lists.

So one more list will not hurt. Let's just help by improving it.

1. Use a crypto debit card like the BitPay Card.
3. Use a P2P exchange.

This should not be the first in the list. The anonymous ways should go higher. So p2p should be the first option.
Plus: there are a lot of such debit cards, some better, some worse, some... better to fully avoid.

2. Sell crypto for cash on a central exchange like Coinbase or Kraken.

This brings even higher risks than the crypto cards because some of the banks still lock in 2023 the funds from crypto exchanges, asking for questions and asking for a lot of papers.
Plus it's 2 centralized businesses we're talking about.
Imho this should be the last in the list.

And some sort of warning: I recommend that if one uses this method he should consider using a different account (and bank) than the main account/bank (if you get funds frozen, at least you can still access those from the main bank).

4. Seek out a Bitcoin ATM.

Depending on the country and the amounts in discussion, these can be a fair option for those keen to stay anonymous, just... they're pricey. The fees are big. Sometimes a bit too big.

5. Bonus: Gift cards.

These could go much higher in the list too. I see them a much better option than ATMs for example.

For those who don't need Ledger for altcoins Blockstream Green (open source) and Mycelium (closed source) are also popular options and I pretty much recommend both of them.
I've tried out Green, but maybe I'm not as open to new as I'd like to admit, hence I kept Mycelium which I've used for longer.
798  Local / Romānă (Romanian) / Re: Cum vă imaginaţi că va arăta lumea Cripto peste 5 ani de zile? Dar 10? on: April 19, 2023, 05:39:56 AM

Dar 10? on: April 18, 2023, 06:49:05 PM

In 5 ani sper ca LN sa aiba inca cel putin 10 concurenti.
Nu stiu daca in 5, dar in 10 ani sper sa imi pot plati painea in satoshi (daca doresc).

PS. Dar in linii largi are sanse sa faca treaba (prea!) buna.
