881  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Does this look like a fun way to gamble? Similar to etheroll on: February 01, 2019, 09:53:18 PM
Looks really neat! I mean, this is where cryptocurrency and specifically dApp platforms really shine.
You wouldn't dream of a traditional casino coming up with something like this, just isn't even possible.

Okay, it's in essence just a dice game, but I really like how they've made it into an actual game almost.
Pretty fancy graphics as well.
882  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin Comic - Volume #1 on: February 01, 2019, 04:01:28 PM
Thanks eternalgloom for taking the time to look at my project.

I just did what you said and updated the main page, so now it has an image of the first comic page, I didn't even think about that.

Good that you did that, now people at least get a glimpse of the comic book and they will know that you've at least put some work into it.
I hope everything works out for you, might donate a couple of dollars myself.
883  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Hackers Stole $1.7B Worth Of Crypto Last Year - Cryptocurrency AML Report on: February 01, 2019, 02:41:07 PM
I've seen a couple of articles pop up with the headline that you see in my title. According to a report by Cyphertrace, 1.7 billion USD worth of cryptocurrency was stolen in 2018.
The report explicitly mentions that many countries are ramping up their KYC requirements and in the report Lightning Network is added to the 'top 10 cryptocurrency threats'.

Full report: https://ciphertrace.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/crypto_aml_report_2018q4.pdf

Seems like we could soon see regulations implemented that make it illegal to send/receive cryptocurrency anonymously. At least, that's the sort of feeling I'm getting after reading the entire report.
Most countries are looking to implement forced compliance by 2020 at the very latest.

884  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: 5 crypto games you should be investing in today on: February 01, 2019, 11:36:36 AM
You should have included Steem Monsters in my opinion, my investments in that game have already paid off big time.
I got in early through their Kickstarter and turned my $50 investment in just over $300, by selling all my Kickstarter exclusive cards.

They have a pretty active player base and you generally don't have to wait longer than a minute to get into a match.
885  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Gambling site that offer Free spin? on: February 01, 2019, 11:04:18 AM
On Crypto-Games, you can spin for free on their slots if you use the faucet or rewards that you earn through their chat bot.
Those free spins do not have rollover requirements, but you won't get that many during 1 day.

Still, if you win the jackpot with them, you could really make quite a lot.
886  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin Comic - Volume #1 on: February 01, 2019, 10:50:18 AM
Is it possible to change the campaign information on your main Kickstarter campaign page?
If so, I would definitely add the first page of your cartoon there too.

Mentioning this because I think that people who first visit your Kickstarter campaign for the first time don't tend to look any further than the first page.
There are no graphical elements or examples of your comic there, so people don't really know what they're donating for.
887  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The first Blockchain beer available tomorrow on: February 01, 2019, 10:11:07 AM
I'd buy it just to add to my collection of Bitcoin related memorabilia. Wouldn't look too bad on my shelf Tongue
If only they shipped this to my country, which I doubt.

AFAIK it's a pain to ship anything with alcohol in it internationally.
888  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Reports of bitcoin environmental damage are garbage on: January 31, 2019, 09:49:14 PM
90% of the bitcoin related news websites are desperate for smallest things to publish and get some traffic directed to their shitty website so you can only imagine how a heated topic like the supposed bitcoin's environmental damage could spread like wildfire. and that is exactly what happened, they hyped up the issue by exaggeration and false information and then the click baiters took care of the rest.

Except that it was the mainstream media that spread this crap, I remember well how articles about Bitcoin consuming ALL world's electricity were hitting reddit's front page some time ago, and to this day when someone mentions Bitcoin outside of crypto subs, people jump in with the same statements that Bitcoin is killing the environment. I find it especially ironic, because those comments are most likely made by a middle-class American, who drives a car every day, uses air conditioning, buys a ton of useless items, thus contributing to the global warming much more than Bitcoin.

Yeah, I've mainly remembered pretty big newspapers who actually published this, they probably sourced their "facts" directly from De Vries himself.
The numbers that were being mentioned back then already seemed exaggerated to me, now it comes out that some of them were completely fabricated almost.
889  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Reports of bitcoin environmental damage are garbage on: January 31, 2019, 03:31:29 PM
@coinycoiny

If those are indeed facts, you wouldn't mind sharing all the studies that you've read to base those 'facts' on.

Not all energy that goes into Bitcoin mining is suitable for other use.
Take for example the excess energy that a hydro power plant produces, in some cases it's better to actually spend that excess energy than to store it.

Here's one example of what happens when there's excess power:

890  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Reports of bitcoin environmental damage are garbage on: January 31, 2019, 02:54:37 PM
the power consumption of bitcoin mining has never been about power consumption of bitcoin mining!

it may sound strange but if you read between the lines of all those articles you can clearly see that they are all saying the same negative nonsense about bitcoin itself trying to undermine its utility and potential. and they all are ignoring the fact that bitcoin is the only decentralized payment system that has been working seamlessly on a global scale for 10 years.

Makes you wonder if Alex de Vries has been paid off by companies that benefit from the demise of Bitcoin.
He does put traditional credit card networks into a good light, by making a false comparison to Bitcoin.

The amount of mistakes made by De Vries is simple appalling, like the conclusion that most Bitcoin in China is mined by coal power plants.
If you look up his name on Google, you'll see that his "research" has been published by a pretty big amount of popular news websites
891  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Decentralized Exchanges on: January 31, 2019, 01:30:43 PM
I really wish I had some smerits to give you, because this post deserves a ton of them.
You've listed just about every decentralized exchange in existence and you've managed to format a pretty decent post layout.

Kudos to you OP, this is one of those rare posts that will go into my bookmarks immediately!
I'm 100% sure that I will be using this in the future.
892  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Why not just gamble with fiat? on: January 31, 2019, 12:24:47 PM
I don't know at which casinos you are playing, but I've never had the experiences you've mentioned.
Pick a casino that accepts altcoins, I tend to use Litecoin a lot for depositing, doesn't take more than 5 minutes, usually it's faster even.

A lot of casinos don't require any KYC, especially cryptocurrency casinos.
I've also seen fiat casinos require KYC.

The BIG downside of fiat casinos is the fact that they do not offer instant withdraws.
While I can play at a cryptocurrency casino and get my winnings any time I want.
893  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Reports of bitcoin environmental damage are garbage on: January 31, 2019, 11:54:28 AM
Found this interesting article on Hackernoon, which states that the main source of the negative press surrounding Bitcoin's environmental impact, is completely untrustworthy and unscientific.

Here's an excerpt from the article:

Quote
Almost all news articles that repeat the lie that crypto is an environmental problem can be traced back to one source: Alex de Vries, a twenty-something year old who has zero knowledge of the electricity industry, power system modelling, China, or any related real-world experience. He blogs from home on digiconomist.net. His “reports” are about as unscientific and unethical as you can get.

While claiming to be unbiased and touting “peer reviewed” “academic articles” his site uses incendiary language to describe the bitcoin computers that maintain system security and administration as “consuming huge amounts of energy” which have now, apparently, reached “epic proportions”. This “massive energy consumption” isn’t the biggest problem, though, according to de Vries; it is that “the network is mostly fueled by coal-fired power plants in China”, resulting in “an extreme carbon footprint for each unique Bitcoin transaction.”

Do read the full article, it's very interesting.

894  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Another Blockchain-Based MMO for Desktop + Mobile on: January 31, 2019, 11:33:35 AM
I'd say that your alpha version already looks good enough to start a Kickstarter for example.
That would be a better option than doing an ICO for this, in my opinion at least.

When you're comparing the cost of setting up a Kickstarter to the cost of launching a successful ICO, I think you'll get more out of a decently presented Kickstarter campaign.

I think you'll reach more of your target audience/investors on Kickstarter, just because a game like this is a very nostalgic experience for most people.
Those sorts of games usually do pretty good on Kickstarter.

If you're doing an ICO, you'll have to spend a lot on advertising and it's going to be more difficult to reach an audience that's interested in a game like this.
895  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Oscar Awards 2019 Betting on: January 31, 2019, 10:40:18 AM
I think I'm going to use Augur this time, there's a prediction market for which movie is going to win the Oscars.
https://predictions.global/augur-markets/what-film-will-win-the-best-picture-at-oscars-2019-0x1b2766408fe7dbdde07b71ee5c262b5d99aeaf66

Never actually used Augur like this, so I'm curious to see how this actually works.
If anyone has experience with this, definitely offer some information if you can.
896  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Litecoin adding confidential transactions on: January 30, 2019, 05:31:16 PM
That's great news, last year I'd heard that it was on their roadmap, but it's good to see that they're implementing it so soon.
Always been a big fan of Litecoin and I use it quite often instead of Bitcoin, just because transactions confirm faster and it's so similar to Bitcoin.
897  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Twitch streamer receives 20 BTC donation on: January 30, 2019, 04:57:53 PM
That definitely the first time I've seen such a large Bitcoin donation being made to a streamer on Twitch.
Best part is that they can't issue a chargeback since it's Bitcoin, it often happens with donations made through Paypal.

A couple of years ago, I remember a bunch of Minecraft streamers getting a 1 BTC donation each.
They were all playing on the same server and some random guy just decided to give all the streamers/Youtubers 1 BTC each.
898  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: What do you think, will running a site like this be profitable ? on: January 30, 2019, 01:43:31 PM
Look, the concept itself can work, but you are obviously going to need a better website than this one.
It's basically some sort of lottery game, I'm sure that similar games exist.

Are you going to be providing users with a provably fair system?
How much budget do you have to promote this service and for a decent design of your website?

Those are pretty important factors in determining if your idea could be profitable or not.
899  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin lock if (time == 5years || price == $50k) on: January 30, 2019, 01:17:26 PM
I personally don't think it's a good idea to add a price condition to the lock, I have tried regular time-locks for +1 year though.
Just don't think it's a good idea to rely on any sort of external API for the price.

It has just occurred to me: He can always override the hosts settings in his computer and redirect to a "fake" API made by himself and hosted locally.
And on a similar logic I think that even the time barrier can be broken - local time can be set by hand and the time servers can be spoofed.
I think that the only reliable "barrier" is the "current" block number on the blockchain.

The fact that you can override it defeats the purpose of having such a lock in the first place.
If you can't help yourself, you'll just break it before it's time.

For anyone interested in doing a time-lock based on block height or date, here's a guide for Coinb.in:

900  Other / Meta / Re: [HACK] One-click mod report, not for the faint of heart on: January 29, 2019, 01:36:49 PM
Everyone trying this out - please make sure to personalize the buttons and set up the comments you want to submit. You can create as many buttons as you want, as well as other stuff like drop downs or text fields. I'll try to come up with an example of a text field for a URL (e.g. when reporting plagiarism).

Yeah, I've added a couple of buttons for myself. Changed in the bct-content.js file.
I'm not a programmer and figured it out pretty quickly. Other examples are definitely welcome though!

Code:
if (link_object) {
        let [thread_id, post_id] = ExtractIdsFromUrl(link_object.getAttribute("href"));
        if (thread_id && post_id) {
            let button_container = document.createElement("div");
            button_container.className = "bct-report-button-container";
            post_container.appendChild(button_container);
            button_container.appendChild(CreateButton("zero value", post_container, thread_id, post_id, "zero-value shitpost", true));
            button_container.appendChild(CreateButton("cross spam", post_container, thread_id, post_id, "spamming their service across multiple threads - please check post history", true));
            button_container.appendChild(CreateButton("non-english", post_container, thread_id, post_id, "non-english post", true));
            button_container.appendChild(CreateButton("price speculation", post_container, thread_id, post_id, "Wrong board, should be in Speculation", true));
        }
