901  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk forums are full of scammers, spammers and tricksters on: October 22, 2015, 11:46:05 AM
You must be pertaining to the League of Spammers who goes by the names of LoL characters and just spam with the same context in their posts and comments consecutively in a single thread? I think it is a bot doing these kind of posts as the interval between posts is just under a minute or two. As for scammers, it is normal in a place where money is involved.
Yes I am. I had to close that thread.

The LoL spammers have all been banned now.
Thanks PhD Lyte. (Brownie points for those understanding the dank reference).

You've spend a lot of time with 4 days logged in?
603 days reporting in. Top guy is still 1200+ though.
902  Other / Meta / Re: MrFudged Usernames on: October 22, 2015, 11:45:33 AM
I just nuked five pages of his accounts this morning but by the time I'd finished there were many more. Not gonna bother now as it's a losing battle and just nuke them as they post/get reported which is quite infrequent so it's not that big of a deal. I think something needs to be changed on the sign-up page though as it is obviously far to easy too create bot accounts here. Maybe better captchas or requiring email validation or something.

There are APIs for temporary emails so I don't think email verification will particuarly help. I'm all for captchas but I seem to remember theymos saying he doesn't like them as somethingsomething external code somethingsomething.
903  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S7 died, keeps hashing with fans on low, S5 burnup all over again? on: October 22, 2015, 06:18:09 AM
I was actually working on this 2 days ago, trying to work out why my S7 wasn't mining. Turns out my PoE had died but in the hour or so of debugging I had the "hot exhaust" issue. Exhaust temps were up a lot compared to stable mining but heatsinks weren't up anything significant.

So when you say the heatsinks weren't up - do you mean what is reported through the web interface?  I just wonder how that would be possible, since hotter air pretty much == hotter temps... I almost think it stops reading the sensors and/or controlling fan.  Either way, it was 100% using full power when it had no ethernet connection going, so something is up with it.

With my temp probe gun, was unable to connect to S7 as my network was fubar'ed. The full equation for forced convection heat transfer is as follows:

q = hc A (Ts - Ta)

where

q = heat transferred per unit time (W)
A = heat transfer area of the surface (m2)
hc = convective heat transfer coefficient of the process (W/(m2 K) or W/(m2 ° C))
Ts = Temperature of exhaust air
Ta = Temperature of intake air

In this scenario we can take a steady state snapshot at the end of the board closest to the exhaust. Comparing normal operation to weirditsstillminingbutitsreallynot operation:

q = constant
A = constant
Ts = up
Ta = up
hc = pretend its constant for now

Ie q1 = q2, A1 = A2, hc1 = hc2

In the above scenario:

q1 = hc1 A1 (Ts1 - Ta1)
q2 = hc2 A2 (Ts2 - Ta2)

So Ts1 - Ta1 = Ts2 - Ta2
or Ts2 - Ts1 = Ta2 - Ta1. Ie if the difference between exhaust and intake temperature remains constant.

Earlier I said set hc as a constant - its not. It varies on lots of properties but we can simplify it to hc = 10.45 - v + 10 v1/2 for air, where v = the relative speed of the object through the air (m/s). When you graph this its a nice easy curve.

If the velocity halves then you drop from ~32 to 28 (hc1, hc2) for an example, quite a small change [hc2 / hc1 = 28/32 = 87.5%]. Adding this back in above we can get:

hc1 (Ts1 - Ta1) = hc2 (Ts2 - Ta2),
hc1/hc2 (Ts1 - Ta1) = (Ts2 - Ta2),
0.875 (Ts1 - Ta1) = (Ts2 - Ta2).

Even though we halved our effective air velocity, we only have to increase our difference between exhaust and intake air temps by 14.2% (1/0.875). Putting some example numbers in:

If exhaust temps were 50C and exhaust temps 30C usually (20C diff)...
We can maintain the same heat removal with half the air speed, with the intake remaining at 30C and the exhaust.... but with an exhaust temp of 30/0.75 = 57C (27C diff)

If you want to look at the relationship between heatsink (chip) temperatures, its varies based on the average air temp. So if we raise our average air temp by 3.5C ([27 - 20] /2), we also raise our heatsink temp by 3.5C.

tldr: Decreased air velocity = smaller increased increased exhaust air temperatures = even smaller chip temperature increase.
904  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] Spondoolies-Tech - carrier grade, data center ready mining rigs on: October 22, 2015, 12:57:09 AM
My point is that no manufacturer to date has been perfect at keeping business interests and community interests in balance. Is this a byproduct of outside investors influence overshadowing the importance that the community plays. Or the actions of a few vocal minority for their own agendas.

The reality is that we need people that are capable and willing to overcome setbacks while the members of the community keep report facts while not being burdensome to innovation by reminding everyone of past failings. Setbacks do happen and we must accept that fact or we will run the risk of being left with insular corporations.
I still think to date the only company not to screw someone over has been Bitfury. They arrived with some in hand products, sold them, made people money, didn't explode and then moved on.

I speculate there will be a used market, and that is how some people will get these in their garage or business.
I doubt that. Look at the BF3500 and BF4500, must have been 1000s in existence but not one, one, has ever made its way into 3rd party or reviewer hands even though I got the closest. The only way this is possible is if as part of the purchase agreement they stipulated a buy back or scrapping scheme such that they couldn't be resold. If Spondoolies want to mimic Bitfury's model (which it seems they should / are / will do so) then they may add in the same controls.
905  Other / Meta / Re: Evil score visualization on: October 22, 2015, 12:55:12 AM
So if you get permbanned you have to pay ? Or can you ie pay to have ban killed sooner than given date?
If an IP has someone banned on it then for someone else to register via the same IP they have to pay a bit. Its an alternative to outright IP bans.
906  Other / Meta / Re: Evil score visualization on: October 22, 2015, 12:21:06 AM
having a hard time understanding this.
so the top left would be xx.0.0.0 and xx.255.255.255 for the top right pixel, and xx.170.130.179 for the blue dot near the bottom right... am I correct?

The numbers are right, but it's 0.0.0.x, 255.255.255.x, and 170.130.179.x.

got it. thanks.

@dogie
splitting the image to 256 16x16 pics can make things a lot easier. though I'm not sure how to do it afterwards in a simple way.

Doesn't particularly help me as I don't have any way to automate the process after that. I have to start with words and turn words into other things as nothing I know interacts with non words.
907  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S7 is available at bitmaintech.com with 4.86TH/s, 0.25J/GH on: October 22, 2015, 12:15:18 AM
Then why are you ignoring requests from members here to show us this email you got from bitmain? If you don't know how to upload a document/screenshot - I can help you.
The best I can do is let you know how I buy my miners.
Which I have done.
I would have to redact so much that it would be pointless.
How much have you spent on mining equipment in the last two years?

That's BS.

You post over 135 posts only in the S7 thread since it started saying you got the first this & the first that, shipping is perfect, bitmain are wonderful, you got emails from them, you got this & you got that - but as soon as anyone askes you corroborate what you say - you ignore them & then give feeble excuses.

Post proof or wolfen=bitmain shill. Official.

Try not to worry - I'm sure things will work out, it can be a little worrying with your first order from Bitmain, especially with the high prices they are charging, but I'm sure your miners will come eventually - it's just a case of when. Be patient. I know it's hard when we read about the horror stories about delivery - & posts like wolfen's certainly don't help. We can't make him prove himself, but if he can't, well, then we'll all know the truth. I heard they did have an official shill once, but he was terrible at it - so they sacked him  Wink
If you would kindly not start a conversation with yourself, that would be great. You were permabanned for doing just that, one would think you'd have learnt by now.

I saw it but I don't believe it unless Yoshi confirms.  This buy US with a extra warranty seems to be something only you have done, which is odd. I cant imagine going to support and ask to buy gear.  But I could be wrong Yoshi is a nice guy.
Last I heard Yoshi was doing a larger role then being involved with public sales. If it was true wouldn't he just post the email?
908  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S7 died, keeps hashing with fans on low, S5 burnup all over again? on: October 22, 2015, 12:05:55 AM
I wish when it was happening I had put a temp probe on the exhaust-side, it was right by some other S7's and when it was in this bad state I felt the exhaust from it and the adjacent units, and it was noticeably hotter.

909  Other / Meta / Re: Evil score visualization on: October 21, 2015, 10:34:34 AM
@Theymos is there a way to convert/anon the data such that it could be released?

You can already reconstruct a lot of the data from the graph with some work. Given a pixel position, you can calculate its /24 address. I'm hesitant to publish the source data because, given that, it's more likely that you'll be able to figure out which data entries I fudged.

I'm not understanding why it is an issue if someone could work out evil IP ranges. The high ones are almost all going to be VPNs and it doesn't identify anyone. The years of data may be useful to others operating other bitcoin services to pre-empt problems before they occur. Regardless, deconstructing the image is beyond my paygrade so unless someone else can get me the pixel data into a written data form I'll have to pass.
910  Other / Meta / Re: Supicious users on: October 21, 2015, 10:30:10 AM
OP posted only 8, I counted them there's 10 of them all in 1 signature campaign and all quoting the OP of the thread, looks like a bot

For reference these are all characters in the most popular PC game in the world - League of Legends. They may be spamming for the sig campaign but they may also be levelling the accounts up for sale or stasis. Nidalee, Nautilus and Master Yi are spelt wrong though.
911  Other / Meta / Re: Evil score visualization on: October 21, 2015, 08:00:30 AM
Do evil points ever fade away or is the map consistent forever.
And it looks like the Internet is not so evil after all except for that one well defined corner  Grin
Last I heard they do decay.

@Theymos is there a way to convert/anon the data such that it could be released? I've never visualised something of only nodes, would be interesting to see what Gephi can do.
912  Other / New forum software / Re: Private Feedback? on: October 21, 2015, 07:39:26 AM
What is the purpose of leaving private feedback?
You can simply make a note and writing that you have dealt with this person at xx time and that's it.
The feedback itself is something that should be public and to let others if he is trusted or not, how was the deal gone etc.
It simply does not make sense at least to me, let's see others opinions.

Its a niche feature and more useful for some rather than others. Ie you could leave a quick note to say "doucheback because of x post, keep on ignore" without annoying anyone.
913  Other / New forum software / Re: Usernames of those who stalk my profile on: October 21, 2015, 07:38:04 AM
Not useful and easily worked around, don't even see the best case scenario use for it.
914  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive Bitmain Antminer S4 Setup [HD] on: October 21, 2015, 07:37:01 AM
So pumped right now! Doggie where can I get the slow fan firmware?
I don't know where his repository is but you could start the search from here or contact him.

Has anyone had a go at creating any DIY sound proofing for this unit?
You could attempt ducting front and back but the S4 doesn't have much thermal headroom and its not the easiest miner to do it on. If you want quiet then you'll have to use the firmware at some point.

What mining pools should I look at? Keen to explore some - I know I want to give CKs solo pool a whirl.
I used to always mine on BTCGuild long term, now on Antpool for the lower variance. Have a look around the Pools section to get started, I won't recommend anything specific. I would say to not dive into a solo pool with a single piece of hardware, there's a 90.6% ([1-[0.01652/25]]^150) chance that even without a difficulty rise and 100% uptime your S4 will never find a block. Put in more conceivable numbers and its 95%+. If you don't find a block on a solo pool you get zero.
915  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S7 is available at bitmaintech.com with 4.86TH/s, 0.25J/GH on: October 21, 2015, 07:25:14 AM
So after reading others success regarding fan % and warmer chips resulting in better performance I am testing my two units at 30%

Antpool is already showing a significant jump in poolside hashrate

Orig temps were roughly 44c, now with 30% fan temps are 58-60c

Letting it run overnight and will check results tomorrow

If you want better testing conditions, set a lower difficulty. 1/4 difficulty = 4x the test data in the same time as long as the controller can take it.
916  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] Spondoolies-Tech - carrier grade, data center ready mining rigs on: October 21, 2015, 07:13:59 AM
I think he has exaggerated the situation and if anything probably took advantage of Spondoolies.
Poor, vulnerable $28M a year company being taken advantage of. I guess that's what you'd tell your bank if you don't pay your mortgage, that they're taking advantage of you for expecting you to pay your debts?

I think this is the Spondoolies thread about their Mining Hardware -- this discussion about SPT short changing you should be taken to Meta or Scam Accusations - it is present on the last 10+ pages - i do not see how it pertains to fostering discussion about hardware - just my 2 cents

I was asked about it multiple times several pages back, now the trolls (+ the guy with 20 accounts) keep reposting it. And it does relate to Spondoolies-Tech as their ability to pay their debts is relevant to their ability to fulfil customer orders - or if they should be trusted in the first place. You wouldn't say that BFL owed orders shouldn't go in the BFL thread.

I agree with you dogie, your claim is relevant to the thread.  I believe your claim against Guy and SPT.  I really don't believe you would make false claims against them at all.  I have your back on this one and I appreciate all you have done and continue to do for the community.

People should not blindly trust the leader of a company just because they like some of their gear.  I frankly did not appreciate them identifying the SP20 as a 1.7 TH +/- 5% or 10% rig.  I don't remember whether it was 5 or 10 percent.  Bitmain, has better quality gear in my opinion.  Yes, SPT did have a better and faster user interface at the time.  However, BITMAIN, has come around to having one just as fast now.

Cheers M8

I agree fully. I think Spondoolies painted themselves into a corner. And now they struggle to explain to their new partners why they should use their new money to pay some debt they never told them about.

Let's keep in mind that the root cause of this argument seems to be that dogie didn't give them the rating they wanted.

 https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=456691.msg10593006#msg10593006

Quite honestly I don't feel like that was the reason they didn't pay in the first place, but it was certainly the reason / excuse they used to kick me out of the system, denounce me from bitcoin and to not play nice. At the same time, Guy claims that the reason they got a "low" rating was because they didn't pay, so its not cool either way. The whole thing is a shame.
917  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive Bitmain Antminer S4 Setup [HD] on: October 21, 2015, 02:26:54 AM

Whatever feels right to you

What Thermal compound do the ASICs have on them originally?
No idea

how tight the screws be on the heatsinks?
They're spring screws so until the thread stops the screw. The spring will apply the actual force.

Also, I used AS5 for the repasting, would you guys recommend other paste?
A non conductive paste. There are more exposed board components that would suffer should the AS5 be squeezed out.

(one of the stock fans is starting to fail unfortunately.)
Remove the dead fan, it will restrict flow.
