Now if I connect another or more S3's to the network adaptor via LAN cables - do I need to change their IP's - for eg 192.168.1.99 change to something else say 192.168.1.199 for each one apart from the original S3 at 192.168.1.99?
Yes. Set to any IP within your router's range which isn't being used by another device. .98 and .99 are probably unused.

But - If I give them each a separate IP address 192.168.1.xxx - then I should be able to access from my computer separately while they are all connected and mining?  Is there much risk in changing the IP's if I stick to 192.168.1.xxx since 192.168.1.99 works now?
Yes, no (if you've got up to date firmware).

Usually I would just try and see but I see so many horror stories on this and other threads - dont want to take any risks if I don't have to.
Absolute safest method is to set them both as DHCP so they'll accept whatever IP the router gives them. It will mean the IP to connect to them may float around a bit, but you can pin the IPs as preferred ones to the S3s so they won't move via your router.

2014 12 16 was bugged and was quickly replaced by 2014 12 19 so don't worry about that. A copy of 2014 10 24 can be found here, but make sure you heed the warning!

20141024 firmware contains broken reset button functionality. If you set network settings wrong or are unable to access to the UI/SSH, the controller is considered unrecoverable and bricked. It will have to be sent back to Bitmain to be reflashed manually. Use at your own risk.

If you are the writer of the scripts, then you will have the sourcecode. Try to find some bugs or hackable points at that, if it is found then we can stop the sites from scamming people.

Scamming scammers does not help the people the scammers were scamming and is likely to just make things worse.

Hi Guys,

Last night I had multiple miners die.  The LED on the back of the PSUs just glows RED.

I have removed the PSUs and re seated them but this has made no difference. 

I have tried the PSUs in different miners but this also made no difference.

Can anyone advise what the next step would normally be?  or how to obtain new PSUs?

Seems a coincidence that multiple PSUs would die simultaneously, especially the hard core PSUs you get in Spondoolies gear. Is there a chance that a breaker has tripped, a cable melted, PDU died etc etc which is causing this? Tried swapping the power cables (and so circuits) from a working unit with one of the dead units?

Underclocking a S4 - Is there a firmware coming out to allow us to adjust the voltage on the S4 so we can undervolt & underclock the S4 to 481w

There need to be a bit more life left in the old S4 yet & this will only be achieved by underclocking..

If so how much longer do we need to wait??

Nothing to stop you loading some of the older firmwares if you need to undervolt now. New firmware could be a week out, or it could be many many weeks out. Just don't wait up for it.

Ok can u confirm which firmware the underclocking will be available on??

And how do we know what voltages will work with what feq??

I don't remember specifically but maybe 2014 10 16. There maybe a frequency / voltage table someone has made in another thread but your best bet is setting the frequency you want, then see how low you can get the voltage but keep the chips stable. That point may be different unit to unit and will only take about an hour to find.

Just ordered 20 antminer s5 and two of them are dead when i plug them on

The second one looks like an unhappy board (try on different PSU, then swap its port on a controller to see if we can coax life into it) but the first one looks like an unhappy controller/PSU. That is evidence by BOTH boards being unstable (very unlikely naturally) and that the fan is going at 3k without any temp indication. You can try connecting the hashing boards on another controller if you lay 2x S5s on their sides and get the cables to reach.

I can not set the voltage chips. In the menu box for tension, but typing in any value after boot S3 + B11 unresponsive and I measured voltage of the chip voltmeter and there is still 0.760 V. Bitmain then somehow forbid editing tension in newer firmwares, right? You have what firmware and editing tension will really work?
The whole history of issued fw is available somewhere for download? Bitmain on site, some fw deleted and not available. Thank you for advice.

Yes its disabled in the software (since around the new year) but depending on your board type it may not be possible on the hardware itself. I have the following if anyone needs them, but not all of them may be good useable firmwares.

Maybe so Bitmain can have a "Sale" on S5's when the S7 comes out, and they can make the price look better?

Maybe Bitmain wants to get the maximum amount from the S5's they can build from ASIC parts already ordered?

Maybe because there isn't anybody else making a "ready to ship" miner at this time?

Maybe because they're running low and S7 is still some way out. Or maybe unicorns, we're just guessing here Tongue

Bitcoin is suppoce to be decentralised and p2pool is right ?
I tried. Hard. Couldn't afford investing more time into it and am being forced into mining on centralized pool, disrupting bitcoin's decentralization purpose and probably having my hashrate stolen once in awhile or used for other purposes I didn't agree.

The typical reasons are inconsistent earnings due to low network %, high pings, higher complexity, lower performance / earnings. P2Pool is a hard sell towards new users.

Is there maybe some chart of overclocking, i have been tweaking from 250 to 270 mhz ant down from 0660 up to 0810 volts, haven't been able to get past the 520 mark, running 2x boards atm. might need to connect all 4 boards maybe to get it stable ?

Temps are stable between 30-35 at a room of 20-25 celcius. How high in volts can i go whitout damaging the boards?

810 is already too high really, I wouldn't run 24/7 higher than 780. Remember that C1 boards are already clocked fast compared to S3 boards and they're not that different.

It's not as simple as that, e.g. I could grind the circuit generator to find 'random' hash algorithms which a heuristic solver of mine can answer much faster than naive execution.  There have been some altcoin POW proposals that failed pretty seriously to this.

It's also the case that whatever parameterization you create, someone can just create an ASIC specialized for it... if nothing else stripping excess IO pincount and other costs.  Keep in mind, CPUs are ASIC too, ones with incredibly complex, secret, patented designs-- which can be mass produced by their makers at a marginal price which is a tiny fraction of what they sell for... "Be careful what you ask for".

CPUs are asics.
The goal shouldn't be "impossible to make an ASIC". The goal should be "an ASIC should be a substantial fraction of a general-purpose CPU", therefore the cost of developing a competitive ASIC should be a substantial fraction of developing a competitive CPU. It isn't trivial but it also isn't a completely uncharted territory of research.

I agree, the ideal is to set something like an i7 4790K as 1.00 performance and everything else is a proportion of it. Performance from that point won't increase more than 10% YoY and will remain at the same price. If anyone other than AMD / Intel / ARM + other can design a chip that outperforms an i7 4790K then they've got a bigger market than just Bitcoin to play with and several $B in the bank already.


But then as I pointed out above, even if you were successful, the result might just be giving a free license to Intel and AMD, which probably wasn't what you wanted.
Having 2 companies almost too large to care about Bitcoin as the ONLY competitor is a great thing and a significant improvement on now. At the moment its too easy to design an ASIC and there is too much performance improvement YoY. We went from 10W/GH to 1W/GH now to 0.2W/GH. And that best chip is controlled by ONE company who's sole purpose is to mine. If they choose not to sell they simply win the network and no one can do anything. Comparing that to the Intel / AMD self mining scenario, we all have access to the same weaponry with the same performance. That is a much healthier scenario than 5 companies manufacturing the ONLY weapons, most of which who refuse to sell to us peasants.


If somebody has approx. 9GB of server space available I could upload the ISO DVD images of his 4 lectures on this subject from around the turn of the century. This was a "sales brochure" for his textbooks, I don't think it is copyrighted in any restrictive way. I have very limited Internet connectivity at the moment, I couldn't even seed a torrent reliably. Just please promise that you'll seed it properly afterwards.

I wonder if the network could somehow take psuedorandom data from the block chain and then use this to create a random hash algorithm. It's hard to imagine how this would be done without using a fixed set of algorithm patterns, though. Maybe each node could use the pseudorandom data as input into identical evolutionary algorithms that end up producing one acceptable hash algorithm. (Can a computer prove that a random algorithm is secure enough for PoW?)
The variable portion of the PoW algorithm doesn't have to be secure, one can sandwich the variable portion between a pair SHA-2 for strong cryptographic security. The anti-ASIC meat in between needs to be only sufficiently close-to-bijective and reasonably chaotic. No need to attempt a complete proof of that, just a decent test of in a subspace that there are no fixed-points.

That actually sounds promising; rather than just varying the service string every block, you also vary the algorithm. I'm looking at this through absolutely naive eyes so there's a good chance that I've completely misunderstood how things works but here goes; simplified:

1) Take previous block header -> Put through a known, standard algorithm to generate a string.
2) Break that string up into areas, ie the first 4 characters = 1 new string, second 4 characters = another new string
3) Map those new strings with range values into configurations of the algorithm either by function or feed. [I just made that up].
     a) By function means you either loop the entire thing X times (not that useful) or run multiple loops on individual some operations in sha2. Ie run S1 multiple times using the outputs as new inputs then continue as normal. Or even more complex, vary how many times the individual operations rotate and by how much.
     b) By feed means you run multiple loops or partial loops, and then repeat it but with a translated character order. So ABCDEFG = FAEBGDC and repeat. The translation string from the block header could include one set of translations or multiple sequential ones to increase the number of combinations and prevent ASICs calculating them all.
4) PoW that, somehow Cheesy.

As long as the resultant algorithm is sufficiently different or potentially different from say sha-256, it couldn't be overcome by a standard SHA256 ASIC. Even if you made areas on an ASIC to do the component functions of a generic sha2, you'd be limited in speed by your controller which surprise surprise isn't that different than a CPU. And as soon as you stop running a standardised sha2 function then ASIC usage should just be non existent.
