1601  Other / Meta / Re: Should Bitcointalk sell coin communitites a subsection of the forum on: May 20, 2015, 12:30:08 AM
Bitcointalk's indifference towards alt coins only changes to disdain when it interferes with Bitcoin discussion, which is why it was given its own section. Removing the Alt Section would just lead to people posting about alt coins in Bitcoin related boards, which would be even more annoying.

Which is also why lots of subforums we don't necessarily want, are required. Trying to stop the bath running by closing the bathroom door does not work, its simply going to floor the rest of your house.
1602  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Official Avalon Technical Support Thread on: May 20, 2015, 12:24:13 AM
I have 4 Avalon 4.1 miners and they all work great but now I have 1 miner that is a big problem it give me 100% of all the hardware errors and rejected files the other three work perfectly.
It seems to give out HW errors and rejects files when it changes diff anyone got any ideas? Firmware 20141122

This is a very old thread, you'll find better support posting here or here.
1603  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: A bitcoin miner in every hand on: May 20, 2015, 12:19:55 AM
I'm suprised they picked a usb charging plug.  I really want to see some ROI math on their equipment.

I'm not expecting ROI on any of those but I could be wrong.

It's the best device after a router. The cell phone thing will be done in Phase 3 so no need to worry about that for now.

Why are you expecting ROI? This is not about ROI. It's about decentralization. Unless I get it wrong. It would cost 35$ extra to get the device? If yes then it's not worth it. But the extra 8$ for a router will be worth it. If that's their expense and nothing for the consumer then it's damn good!

If your chips are not revolutionary performers, how does this lead to decentralisation? Those chips spread across 100,000s of devices in the best case still have to compete against the rest of the network running concentrated data centres of the same chips which were deployed for less and have lower electricity costs. Those centralised data centres are going to be able to run harder, longer and more numerously to those devices. And think about it, if you manage to get this into 100,000 products with a 50GH chip, even that is just 5PH. 5. Bitfury has been building ~20PH facilities from scratch for years. So in the best case these decentralised devices (assuming 100% up time) can compete with 1/4 of a single Bitfury facility, or 1.5% of current network capacity.

While its a noble effort, I'm not sure its a shrewd business decision. That said, maybe they have totally different numbers which paint a different story.

Edit:
But the extra 8$ for a router will be worth it. If that's their expense and nothing for the consumer then it's damn good!
The consumer still has to pay for the electricity to mine, and only gets a portion of the revenue in return. IIRC it was suggested 25% to the consumer, 75% to them and locked at the chip level. So, mining would be 4x more difficult to operate at 'break even'. That would lead to non critical devices (USB chargers etc) simply being unplugged when not being used.
1604  Other / Meta / Re: Leave the trust system as is but remove trust scores on: May 19, 2015, 10:12:32 PM
I would be all for this as well, if you could figure out a way to prevent trust spam by people with hundreds of alts. Absolutely no weight would make the trust system as useful as forum polls. I'd actually be for seeing what would happen if default trust was removed, and people were forced to create their own trust lists right now. The system has been around long enough that people should know how to make it work best, but I feel that not much would change, people would still rely on a trust system built by a couple of well known members.

About the bolded, me too!   A softer alternative might be to keep the default trust list around, but make it an opt-in.  So, a new user has a blank trust list, but when you got to your trust settings you see some info about how to add "DefaultTrust" if you want a starter list and don't want to make your own.

[Cut down the quote for space]. Isn't that sort of the same thing though? If people wanted to use trust, 95% of them would simply check the box to use DefaultTrust rather than make their own list. Then all you've done is split the forum into 20% users using DefaultTrust, 75% of users using nothing and 5% using custom lists. Which again defeats the purpose of the trust system which is to protect those more vulnerable 75%.
1605  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive Bitmain Antminer S5 Setup [HD] on: May 19, 2015, 09:28:18 PM
Thanks again for the Help Dogie. It is the BBB (which is not held down by a screw but it is easier to remove the board and separate it away from the machine).

Okay, so you have the options of contacting Bitmain if its in warranty, Bitmain if its not and you want to pay, your seller to send it back or to get another one locally.
1606  Other / Meta / Re: delete Investor-based games section on: May 19, 2015, 06:38:17 PM
It doesnt matter if he hides it or not, scam: n. A fraudulent business scheme; a swindle.  Its the definition of a scam, doesnt matter what, are you going to write a new dictionary?

You don't need to write a new dictionary. They also fall under the definition of gambling whether you like it or not:

    1.
play games of chance for money; bet.

    2.
take risky action in the hope of a desired result.

This is also how I feel about casinos v HYIPs on bct. We are unable to vouch for any legitimacy for an online bitcoin based casino because there is no guarantee that its not just going to alt + F4 away with deposits after a while, which is exactly the same with a HYIP. Considering gambling vs scams IRL is entirely different because that 40 story casino isn't suddenly going to grow legs and try and walk away with your deposit.

Or I hope not. Although that would make a good Godzilla sequel plot.
1607  Other / Meta / Re: Quickseller = BadBear, he removed his DefaultTrust on purpose on: May 19, 2015, 06:27:47 PM
I see how it is. Now that you got rid of your negative trust from Quickseller, your going to start a crusade against BadBear to get the other one removed. I'm guessing Vod will be next after that.

No one seems to care when Canary in the Mine got axed did they?
No one argued that CITM shouldn't have been in DefaultTrust, but that he should be (and was) removed for abusing his depth1 DefaultTrust position. He was essentially selling depth 2 DefaultTrust positions and after being approached multiple times to reform, he chose not to. Theymos gave him every opportunity to trim his list but he refused.

Have a look at what DefaultTrust looked like with him, and without - his trusted list was larger than the rest of the network combined. It was also full of accounts that only he deemed trustworthy, because instead of vetting these people he arbitrarily awarded the positions to anyone who bought from him. Making him more attractive to buy from than other group buy'ers who couldn't award complementary DefaultTrust depth 2 positions.

Forced Atlas 2015.05.16 + CanaryInTheMine                                          Forced Atlas 2015.05.16 (Without Canary)

Remove it and let the market those with the most accounts set the default or get rid of that system and start again with something else.
Fixed, again.

Any way you look at it people will game whatever system you put in place.
That's a terrible argument.

The difference between QS and VOD or CITM is clear. QS never belonged on that default trust list given his support for Dogie a proven VAT scammer someone I don't like because he didn't invest in my company which was destined to fail so now I hate him and follow him around making 100s and 100s of made up accusations.
[Fixed]. How many threads do you need to spill over to, I think this is #9 in the last few days. You already have 3 dedicated anti dogie threads to thrash about in.
1608  Other / Meta / Re: Leave the trust system as is but remove trust scores on: May 19, 2015, 05:39:26 PM
So no more red warnings. What do you guys think? good idea/bad idea?

Warnings are to prevent something bad happening, so hiding them isn't conducive to that.

will people take the time to manually review trust before trading?

Those that need protecting the most won't, which is the problem.

Free for all let the market people with the most accounts determine the value of red marks not just a few people hand picked.

Fixed.

1610  Other / Meta / Re: Why is the forum loading so slow? on: May 19, 2015, 04:23:49 PM
I've also experienced this (although it seems fine for me now).  Certain weeks it will take between 20-30 seconds to load a page (or the connection even times out before the page fully loads), then the issue goes away.  I don't have any answers, and I figured it was just my ISP, but since others are reporting this too, I just wanted to add my name to the list of affected users.

Its been pretty bad for me for the last two weeks or so, same again today. Get short bursts where requests are instant, then long stretches where everything takes 15-20 seconds. Its probably to do with the non mainstream VPN the site uses.
1611  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive Manufacturer Trustworthiness Guide [27th Feb] on: May 19, 2015, 01:57:53 PM
[All the questions seem to be directed to Guy, if I've missed any then please requote.]

If you have answers to any of the questions, and can answer them honestly, I am sure I am not the only one that would be interested in your input.... but it sounds like you are not allowed to speak on certain subjects and I'd rather not be given half answers or PR statements that I need to decipher

Nothing is NDA'ed but it gets a bit messy. tldr its not Guy's story(ies) to tell. Unless his sources want to go public, there isn't anything anyone can do with the information. ... If that makes sense?

I guess I understand where your coming from but I'm not sure I agree with it... I feel like once the information made it to you, you should reveal it. It sounds like the stories come from Guy, through his sources, but now its been given to you (or you had the knowledge prior) and I would expect you to let the community know about it. Regardless, I really don't know all of the information so its pointless speculating what I might do in your shoes, I guess we'll have to leave it at that.  Undecided   Only time will tell!

I'll explain as best I can.

Guy posts on the forum: "I know a secret, and I think you know it too."
Guy doesn't want to reveal the secret in public, so tells me privately.
I didn't 'know' the secret, nor is it public knowledge.
Guy can't yet reveal to anyone what the secret is because the sources aren't public.
Outing his sources would likely damage those sources.
While I could reveal the secret, it would damage both Guy and his sources.
The actual secret is relatively unimportant for everyone and unless someone sues someone else, isn't even an ethical violation.
There isn't any reason for me to force the issue of revealing it.

The end result of what Guy said is that it makes it out as if there is some big conspiracy when its a very minor thing we don't actually care about. But now no one can confirm, deny or explain. It wasn't a good idea.

It seems like a slight contradiction to say revealing this information could damage multiple people, at least one of which is a prominent figure in the bitcoin mining community, but that its somehow relatively unimportant information for everyone??

I don't get a good feeling about any of this but I'll try one more question, if you are willing to answer (and be honest  Smiley )...
Would the actual secret cause you to change the ethical rating, or any rating, of any manufacturer on your trustworthiness guide?

Sorry, I missed this question.

No, no rating would have changed.
1612  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive Bitmain Antminer S5 Setup [HD] on: May 19, 2015, 01:31:24 AM
Any suggestions as to what could be wrong? They shipped as if they were packed well, no damage to the box. I had the former owner send me a screen shot of them hashing (could be faked i suppose) and they were going fine.

What was his network configuration, DHCP or static? All the white ribbon-esque cables look secure?

Thanks for the quick response Dogie.

Yes all the cables look secure. I believe all the miners are on DHCP right now. Again my 1st and 2nd miners are going fine. This one just the fan's boot up, can not get to the control panel to get into any settings it is not connecting to the network.

the 4 green LED's on the top board are all solid.

Thanks. Quickest way to debug this is to unscrew the 4 black screws holding the controller + adapter down, and swap that with one of the working S5s. Put the non working one on one of the working S5s and see if the problem moves or stays. Then we'll know if its hashing boards / power, or controller.

Thanks. Looks like it is the controller. Swapped it over and the unit that wasn't working is, and the unit that was working isn't and displaying the same lights/issues.

Is there anything that can be done to repair it or does it need to just be replaced?

If you've held the reset button and that hasn't worked, then you can try another quick swap. Swap the Beaglebone Blacks off the controller boards and see if the problem moves again. Then we'll know if its the controller board or the BBB which can be replaced locally. Although for both you'll have to get in touch for a repair or send it back to your seller.
1613  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Is this normal? s5 board temperatures difference on: May 19, 2015, 12:33:48 AM
Well I will leave this here in case this ever helps someone. Not creating a new topic nor doing it in a popular board because I don't want to make it seem I am bashing or being unfair to bitmain, but:

1) Bitmain refused to lower my invoice just because. Wouldn't cost them anything and nothing I would do made them change their minds. I pay a 108% import tax + fee.
2) Bitmain sent item with a HIGHER invoice than it actually cost, after I begged for a LOWER one.
3) Was going to buy used gear from bitmain USA but they suddenly started to ignore me, even though they were the ones who offered it
4) Machine had some dust
5) Outrageous 14c warmer board #1. Board #2 was normal
6) Sent them email regarding this problem to what they replied is "something normal and nothing wrong"

Due to these reasons, specially invoice one, I will not buy from them again and don't recommend.
This is what happens on a monopoly. We need some competition here.

Well if your not prepared to actually get down to inspecting it and changing then nothing much anyone can do . At least try some of the other options. Begging you wont get anywhere if you want cheaper wait for price to come down. If wanted to buy 2nd hand then why not go ebay or local places or even on here to buy equipment. Most machines will have some dust in it due to burn in test for a few hours to make sure units working before shipping.

If your units faulty I would give them a full brake down of what is going on what's happened and for a solution to be provided. Simplest solution  if you know how to is tear down the unit bit by bit and replace the compound could simply get dried up on sending out or just bad batch. When I got my Avalon from Avalon this was caked in it like icing on it cleaned up and worked fine. 1x S1 antminer had temps like yours took apart found that the paste was not evenly distributed across the board. Meaning this could of been due to production line running low on compound or it had ran out they inspected sent out and not noticed it. Something like this is a simple fix. And again could also be airflow too. Changed my units around 8 times in my room before finding optimal temps for all units on. So if you not prepared to do anything even tho you should not have to but sometimes have to then good luck in resolving your problem.

I think 1 + 2 are what is making you the maddest most likely.   You should have asked on here and we could have told you it would have a legit invoice.  Big companies are not going to risk doing possibly illegal actions of making a smaller invoice.

I think it's sad this caused you a bad experience with mining.  That is not what any of us ever want someone to have.

Instead of blaming Bitmain on tax though you should really blame your government.  Bitmain did not put that import taxes there they did.

We did  Undecided

I am not asking for discount or anything, just instead of declaring a miner for example $350 just say it actually cost $30 so I can fight back against this theft done by government mafia. I'd still pay same price to seller.

+ government will overtax, meaning it will raise the value based on tax regardless of being changed or not. They will just assume everyone does so.

Yeah, no.

Your best bet is cloud mining if import duties are so high.

1617  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BITMAIN AntMiner APW3-12-1600 PSU Series on: May 18, 2015, 01:36:58 PM
So, does this mean that you will only provide support for people using Bitmain(Tm) power supplies for future miners?
Or is this just me being paranoid?
Extremely paranoid Tongue As long as you're not using a 300x 12V rail PSU made by SUPERHIBIGPOWERWOWLED corporation, I'll help out where I can.

Holy shit.. Be careful with these things guys... I'd advise everyone to be careful as hell if you are buying these and make sure you inspect them inside and out.
It has short circuit protection, as it worked in this case. I'm not sure what the point of that drilled hole was, but it will get fixed.

Giving advice about electrical safety when you are not qualified / certified to do so is a crime in the UK (and many other jurisdictions). Latif aka dogie, your only qualification is taking pretty pictures of mining rigs & waffling on about them plus forging education credentials and that does not qualify you give advice about electrical safety. If at all bitmain want to flog these wares, they should get them certified by BSI (or the relevant authorities in respective jusrisdictions) which will itself speak volumes, rather than let users rely on a non electrically qualified fraudster's advice.

I provided the feature from the specifications, but feel free to report me to the police then let us know the crime reference number if you believe a crime has been committed. BSI is not a certification agency, they're a national standards institute - two very different things.

Hi,

Any suggestions on how to convert a C1 water /oil cooled to a fan cooled?

<5C ambient + block filled with water, or buy (make?) new heatsinks, otherwise you'll likely struggle. Those blocks just have such small surface area to dissipate with.
1619  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive RockMiner New R-Box Setup [HD] on: May 18, 2015, 01:31:30 AM
Tell me, would anyone know how to wire up an old Block Eruptor to one of these, and get it running? im hoping i could just pull the "mud" chip off and throw a few wires up (some single strand core, cat5 cable should do) and directly connect it to the atmega..

What do you mean by wire up a BE to the R-Box?
1620  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S5: 1155GH(+OverClock Potential), In Stock $0.319/GH & 0.51W/GH on: May 18, 2015, 01:30:23 AM
Even if they don't have two fan's it could always be added.   Granted if it's designed with a case that covers on all sides it will be more effective.

I dunno, i have read this thread a lot about the covers, and i even went and did one plastic cover to test it out. It caused all the temperatures to rise by 4-6 ºC, and i have them on a/c the closest i can to the ground. Let the miners stabilize for 5 minutes on each test.

It seems the engineering team did right using an uncovered-on-the-top design.

i think the problem with the s5 is the temp sensors are on the outside of the board on the other side of the chips that are making the heat.
the temps are not very accurate..

I would tend to agree with that, when we see temps go up and down we don't get a good sense if that is just one side, board components, chips, all chips etc. What we do know is that taping up the top and bottom does tend to help by a few C though. Not much and probably not enough to care, but it follows the theory.
