1561  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: November 28, 2017, 06:22:29 AM
I'm not sure if this is where to post my question, but here goes:
I created and deposited Monero into a wallet months ago. I decided to update my wallet software, but when I give it my 25 word seed, it opens with nothing in the wallet. What am I doing wrong?

The daemon and the wallet must be fully syncd before it will show.  After that, try again, or try the CLI wallet.

I am also using Windows. I got the CLI to go through the drill and got the same answer: Balance: 0 Unlocked Balance: 0.
Any way to see historical transactions?

Once the daemon is syncd, and then the wallet syncd to the daemon, history and balance should be restored.

Try starting the daemon, and fully synchronizing it before open/sync a wallet.

Are you using the latest version, 0.11.1.0?
Yes, am using the current version. I started monerod.exe in a command window and as soon as it was synced, I left it running and started CLI in a new cmd window. Got the same result... Balance: 0 This is not looking good. Is there a command to show past transactions in the CLI wallet?

Sorry, I don't know how else I can help.  I'm sure someone better able to answer your questions will chime in.

I had that issue a few months ago, when I got only a partial balance. Everything was syncd, and I was a bit stunned.  I resyncd everything and used the CLI, and everything was there.  Subsequently, loading the GUI has worked fine.  I'm using windows, so its just business as usual  Tongue

Can someone please explain the difference between a secret and public view key.  I think I get it but want to be sure I understand it correctly. Can you give me an example of how secret key would be used vs. a public key.

Also been away from this forum for a long bit, got to catch up.  What is the current status of the official wallet?  Like I said have not been keeping up.

Thanks.

Welcome back.  We have a GUI  Grin  And a hard fork a couple months ago. You will need v0.11.1.0 from here:

nice read ty.

I found it on reddit.   Subscriptions there  +30% in 30 days.  Crazy.

I have been reading this post for more than 5 years, and it never stops to amaze me. Such a pity OP was not registered at the time, and therefore anonymous. It would be fun to hear a comment about the prediction becoming almost confirmed as price approaches the $10.000 "a pop".

If you had read this thread, or parts of it, even once, you would know that that is not the case.
1568  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 27, 2017, 01:10:35 AM
Bitfinex allowed shorting and the Nov 2013 bubble started right after they opened.

Didn't know Bitfinex was operating or had any relevancy at that time. I thought it was mostly MtGox and Bitstamp and to some lesser extent BTC-e.

Anyway, Bitfinex is a BITCOIN exchange so it is in their best interest not to completely crash Bitcoin. Can't say the same about traditional brokers. That's why I don't really know what will be the impact of it.

IIRC they settled on Bitstamp until they were big enough to leave the nest.  It was a weird sort of relationship.
1569  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 27, 2017, 12:57:08 AM
Its definitely positive. It means everyone with a brokerage account suddenly has access to bitcoin without having to deposit onto a third party exchange they might not trust, and they can go in and out of bitcoin trades next to their stock trades. It means massive liquidity. Think billions of dollars suddenly added to the finex order book. Possibly with leverage too. I posted on here some time in 2013 or 2014 a prediction that if BTC were to be integrated with standard brokers, the price would immediately surge to $10K. This is what the rally has been all about.

I was under the impression that CME futures did not touch Bitcoin directly at any moment during the entire process. It's USD all the way. Am I wrong?
They are futures contracts which means eventually at some date on the contract, the exchange has to buy actual bitcoins and deliver them. In addition, the futures prices will move the bitcoin price by mere arbitrage.

I understood that they were USD settled.  As in zero BTC contact, unless one used it independently to hedge the futures.  Basically USD bets on the price of BTC, a good ol' derivative that can be used to control prices with unlimited paper.

I think there is much more than 1M bitcoins lost.

and when you google for these lost bitcoins stories most are really dated numbers in terms of value.
You literally have to multiply the reported value 15 fold making it even more "head shaking worthy." (for want of a better term)
So for example this familiar story
I'm sure most of the legendaries/heroes in here have heard about the
7500 bitcoins lost valued at over a reported $5 million then that are now worth around $70 million.
And this is just one story of many.
It's mind blowing when you think about it.

No one takes into account the dust left behind everywhere.

I have one inaccessible wallet containing enough for a good night out year's salary.  The other one has only dust  enough for a really good night out.  Still only makes me smile and shake my head at my own stupidity.

To be revisited after the next batch of zeroes are handed out.

Why is it inaccessible? You don't remember absolutely anything about the password you might have used or is it another thing?
Strong passwords, lost.  I kept notes on the variations tried and failed, but it's years ago now.  Water under the bridge, but maybe worth revisiting someday.  If a family member continues an interest in cryptography then perhaps I will hand over the notes some day.  There is a pot of gold at the end of that rainbow, if you can reach it Cheesy  No worries.

Even if it is strong, if it is not purely random -which probably isn't- and you do remember some hints about what you might have used -most people do even have some "style" of generation- it would potentially be crackeable with the right custom rules. It also depends on the actual value of the wallet to determine if it would be worth the effort or not.

If you even tried variations manually it sounds like you have some general idea of how it could be formed. There's hope.

Exactly.  It is not critical to my net crypto at this point, but could make a great project/windfall someday.  Who knows, I might even get around to learning how to crack it myself someday.

That is the old idealistic image for a Phase 3 seastead in middle of the ocean.

The initial seastead that will actually be built will look more like this:

My last day of work was Friday, I am officially "retired" (from working for a salary). I will be in Tahiti next month and plan on moving there in early 2018 to help get the seastead project off the ground afloat.

$2 to $1135 is the same as $200 to $113,500.

Yes, but it wasn't a continuous rally - there was the vertiginous drop from $266 to $50, which at the time felt like the end of a bubble. In relative terms, it was nearly as great as the drop from $1135 to <$200.

Do I remember well that drop from $266 to $50 had some technical issue/glitch, or was it completely natural?
It was initiated by downtime at MtGox as that single exchange did 80% of volume at the time.

Gox was just showing Kraken how to choke on volume.  Speaking of Kraken, I wonder if they got more toasters on a black friday sale?  Maybe upgrade to a 6 slice unit.  That would be nice.

Why are you so bearish aminorex?

Long term, $10-20k doesn't seem a lot.

It was not an upper bound or stable endpoint which I was indicating, but rather my estimate of the range in which the clearing price of XMR would exceed the clearing price of BTC.

Are you anticipating a crash of BTC soon?  If you subscribe to the theory that 20k/BTC could be as soon as next summer( seems fantastic, but is really not so far out), that would put XMR at 20K+ on the same timeline?  A far more fantastic idea!
Or have I misunderstood your meaning entirely?

As long as no noob quotes it, we'll be fine.  BJA account likely hacked anyway, as I'm pretty sure he wouldn't take JJG off ignore...?

ok, does anyone know how long it usually takes to get a transaction from mymonero to your kraken account?
I've been waiting for at least 4 hours now. is this normal?

it's not the first time I've done this, and I don't think i've messed up the address (copy pasted it)

Anyone know what's up?

My guess would be somebody is using the toaster at Kraken to... make toast.  It is therefore unavailable to process your deposit.  Just wait a week or so, I'm sure support will get back to you.  After toast.

Or there could be an unexpected problem.
Havent had a problem with kraken thusfar.. why do you think it's so unreliable?

Many people find Kraken unusable any time volume is average or higher.  The long running joke is that their systems are run by a toaster. Personally, I've given up on them for a while.  If I hear of improvements to their traffic handling, I will try again.

I always bought monero with other crypto (mainly BTC) . Is there a good service to get it from fiat directly? Or i should keep doing the same, buy BTC, ETH, LTC for example and then trade it for Monero?

That's probably simplest if you have a preferred exchange for that.  Otherwise  Kraken and Bitfinex have USD markets, also EUR on Kraken IIRC.  There are several other EUR markets, and GBP, KRW, JPY etc
