So the bond market sold off today, the U.S. stock market sold off 1%, AND Gold and Silver got hammered, AND crypto got FUD'ed.

All on the same day, at the end of Jan? When some of those things should be inversely correlated?? Yeah, makes perfect sense.  Roll Eyes

Expect all markets to continue bull run.

A question is how the USD going down the drain plays out in all this.

https://www.investing.com/quotes/us-dollar-index-streaming-chart

Watching metals and oil take a hit (USD) while CAD stays up against USD is a clear indication of falling USD, but I wouldn't get too excited - it won't last.

Torque - Agreed.

Without sounding prudish, in my experience 95% of people has no concept of long term planning, they act on basic immediate emotional impulses - that also explains these panic sell periods - which are so far has been always corrected upwards in the long term. Like, why would anyone, who is in for the long run and trust the principles of bitcoin would sell on a flash crash out of fear?

It has been proven many times, that day trading on sudden swings based on fear/greed leads to a net loss for more than 90%+ of the participants (net value gain is in a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareto_distribution, hence the long time strategy is hodling). i have found that studying psychology/philosophy of humans are more rewarding in economic endeavours than economics itself...

95% might be a bit high, but the gist seems correct.  ~50% of people have an IQ less than 100.  ~80% under 115.  You cannot expect great thinking from the masses, when they are so easily led by kittehs and fake news.  There is a reason that change comes from 5% or even less.  Logic and Reason are not common.  It's terribly difficult to study if you cannot read/comprehend, and many (most?) people cannot.

Facebook banning ALL crypto advertising including the legit companies.

Waiting for ALL crypto to ban Facebook.  Now that would be something.

If you've used LocalBitcoins in the UK, this guy's account would probably be familiar with you. He put down his residential address on Companies House for his business - not a good idea.

It's a stark reminder of the truth of that five dollar wrench gif. Keep safe and, if you have a great sum invested, avoid exposing that fact!

We can't even really harvest solar and wind yet without subsidies.

We can, its just that coal/nuke/dams are paid for(subsidized) by future generations, and current society doesn't count that in any way.

This was one of the most exciting projects in the bitcoin space a couple of years ago then it just died. http://www.othercoin.com/OtherCoin.pdf

Quote
OtherCoin is an off-chain Bitcoin payment system based on a tamper-resistant smartcard in microSD form factor. OtherCoin works by securely generating, storing and transmitting Bitcoin private keys between parties. Private keys are never revealed to either the sender or the receiver, they can either be used directly in the Bitcoin protocol to sign transactions or securely transmitted to another OtherCoin user. Each OtherCoin smartcard guarantees that the key has either been securely generated by itself or has been received over a secure channel from a similar OtherCoin, with the same restrictions.

I haven't heard anyone talk about it in ages. I think it was a little before it's time. Bitcoin hadn't run into its scaling issues yet and hadn't become generally well known yet either. But maybe it's time has come?

FP specifically has put forward the idea of attacking scaling at all levels and it seems to me that this is a potentially very practical and powerful scaling vector. Additionally it would make many of moneros transactions entirely off chain. This has great implications for privacy. With our funding model we could probably raise the funds necessary to fund the development of some sort of open source application specific hardware device for this sort of thing if a knowledgeable hardware guy were to avail himself.

Mostly I just thought it would be cool if I could kick off a discussion about this proposal. Get it back in the public consciousness. More specifically into the Monero community consciousness. What are your thoughts dear reader?

Bump I guess since no one seemed to have noticed it last time. This particular way of scaling at the low end could be a HUGE part of the solution to scaling.

Something that could be integrated into the inexpensive open source Monero hardware wallet?

The undisputed king of atomic swaps is jl777 (he did them in 2014) his BarterDEX has done well over 20K swaps now, most using spv tech so you don't even have to download any blockchains, and if users are prepared to time-lock a KMD deposit they can be 0-conf too. BarterDEX has already done test 'etomic' swaps between KMD and ETH even.

It's absolute BS that Charlie Lee claims any credit for doing a few manual swaps with LTC, eventually the word will get out about BarterDEX, and people will naturally ask "why did Charlie ignore BarterDEX for so long?"

Holders of assets like DEX have already been paid 2mil USD from fees so far, just from the test alpha stage.

That would be ~$100 in fees per swap.  What am I missing?

You probably need to look into the Komodo eco-system yourself to understand it fully (it's quite expansive, so complicated), and I don't want to derail this thread, plus I only know the basics myself.

BUT, in a nutshell there are three fees being collected (notary fees, BarterDEX fees, Jumblr fees), so far the largest is notary fees for 'delayed proof of work' (dPoW), which notarizes the KMD blockchain onto the BTC chain with periodic bitcoin transactions, which therefore, gives any assetchains created on komodo platform bitcoin level security themselves by extension (btc->KMD->assetchain).

The 2 mil USD paid last month was from notary fees collected since KMD started 12 months ago.

That's what the majority of bitcoins raised in the SuperNET ICO a few years back is being used for (i.e. paying notarising fees which are btc transactions). My understanding is when a Komodo notary makes a notary tx to bitcoin they also pay a fee in KMD that is accumulated and paid to various supernet asset holders, and in Dec 2017 those 'notary fees' amounted to 2 mil USD. There are 64 KMD notaries who were elected by KMD holders, elections every year.

The BarterDEX fees are accumulating, but still small, and jl777 says he will distribute when fees total 1mil USD from now on.

Then there are fees also for Jumbling service, which adds privacy to funds coming out of BarterDEX afaik

Honestly, you need to research SuperNET/BarterDEX/KMD yourself, it's complicated so takes time to get your head around it, but I'm convinced jl777 has a great product with BarterDEX and KMD. The vision is simple  - allow risk free trading of any crypto with 100% privacy, and eventually that'll include XMR.

Not interesting enough (to me) for me to put time into at this point, but thanks for the summary.

NO. Ledger blue will be updated later.
I waited long since the news about Monero is on the JAXX wallet
but until now has not been realized...is there any information why it has not been successful yet???

I didn't pay much attention at the time, but my take away was this: It was difficult to do, so they rage quit.  Then JAXX was found to be insecure, so nobody cared.

Hy there,

which hardwarewallet does support Monero, i didn't find any, maybe you guys can point me in the right direction  Grin Smiley

Ledger expects to release their app for the Nano S very soon, and the open source Monero wallet will likely be available before summer.

So same ledger not a different hardware?

I have been waiting to buy one, Im past the point I should.

Yep same one.  They are back ordered until March and the price has gone up.  If there are further delays the open source wallet just might sneak out first though.  I managed to sneak my order in when they were stating limited stock remaining, and I will buy a bunch of the open source units when they are available, to mostly give away.

Rumour of a "merger" between Monero and Litecoin:

https://bitcoinist.com/possible-litecoin-monero-merger-steps-closer-reality/

Quote
Charlie Lee admits his ambition to work with Monero in a series of tweets he posted yesterday, claiming that Litecoin’s liquidity would be a good fit for Monero’s anonymity and fungibility.

Monero (XMR) creator Riccardo Spagni and Litecoin (LTC) creator Charlie Lee would appear to be taking tentative baby steps in potentially bringing their two coins closer. Spagni posted the following tweet yesterday, which first bandied the idea of a possible merger between the two cryptocurrencies:

"Such a productive few days, finally got to sit down with @SatoshiLite and talk about a possible merger between the Litecoin Enterprise Alliance and the Monero Enterprise Alliance, which we’d obviously call the LAMEA. #blessed #justblockchainthings"

Lee, who has professed a desire for increased anonymity in the past with regard to Litecoin,  was quick to respond in his own indomitable manner with his own series of tweets:

"Although @fluffypony was kidding here, I think it would be good for Litecoin and Monero (2 of the top non-scam coins 😄) to work together. A while back, I proposed to him that we work on making it easy for people to do on-chain atomic swaps of LTC and XMR in a decentralized way."

Never heard of bitcoinist.com, I assume it is a subsidiary of The Onion?  Anyone who either read the tweets or knows these guys' reputations, got a good laugh, I guess.  How long before Coindesk and CNN pick this up  Cheesy

Pixel XL with CopperheadOS looks interesting now, Librem5 later.

Waiting for a Librem is an art form.  Not to worry, there's plenty of time and other models to practice with Undecided

So does Purism have Meldown and Spectre patches yet?

https://puri.sm/posts/purism-patches-meltdown-and-spectre-variant-2-both-included-in-all-new-librem-laptops/

Quote
Unfortunately, at the moment, patching Spectre variant 2 requires applying a proprietary CPU microcode update from Intel.

Not ideal, but presumably not stopping there.
