2101  Local / Débutants / Re: La passphrase (contributions bienvenues) : protégez vos bitcoins on: March 22, 2023, 03:34:16 PM

Pool is down?

You can always check here : https://solo.ckpool.org/pool/pool.status

Right now pool if online, and to be honest, I don't remember when was the last time I saw it offline (If I ever saw it down, not sure)
2104  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Passphrase recovery with Btcrecovery on: March 21, 2023, 05:51:05 PM

Yeah it runs offline mate just go to https://github.com/sc0tfree/mentalist/releases/tag/v1.0 and download Mentalist-v1.0-OSX.zip

Also running something offline doesn't always make it secure, this is a protip. If you want to be extra safe, Run this on a live usb or an old laptop with the network device removed &/or disabled from the bios.

Malware can aggregate data offline for posting it out later on, also crash reports, memory persistence happen too.

I didn't really realize that; thank you! I did plan on moving everything out, if ever found and changing the passphrase etc. before formatting the laptops and enabling wi-fi. I like your suggestions though.
Is there a Windows version of Mentalist?

In my opinion, you should use Debian or at least Ubuntu! A Linux distro will be way more secured than Windows. Maybe, it is just my pro-linux propaganda which is talking right now  Grin but it is never too late to start using Linux, and you won't regret it for sure

May I ask what is the goal of "gekko-lowboost" ?

I understand the usage of "--gekko-noboost " but I don't understand what is doing lowboost concretly
2107  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What's your most efficient solo mining rig or plan on: March 21, 2023, 04:54:40 PM
What is the most effective way to lower the cost of electricity for solo mining Bitcoin, something you would want to set up and never look back again until several years later, it has to be very energy efficient, the size shouldn't matter that much, I am not looking to solve a block very soon.

It depends. If you are just interested in the principle of mining, and the "lottery" side of solo-mining, you should look at what Sidehack produces as miners: the R606-R909, Gekko Newpac, CompacF, these are small ASIC miners that don't consume a lot of power, and don't need to be monitored if they are well ventilated/cooled. They are very small hashrate miners, it's ideal for home mining, but you won't reach PH/s levels unless you accumulate thousands of them.

Otherwise, recently Canaan had some great promotions on their online site, and the A1166 takes 47J per Th, which is pretty decent.

But in any case it's case by case, it depends on your price paid per kw/h.

I can advise you to look at Willi's Long term Group run: we rent 200TH/s for 6-7 months through a hashrate rental group, and we share the block reward if we have a block. It's a way to get a foot in solo mining without worrying about the hardware and its maintenance, or the electricity ; as it is rental hashrate. We recently hit a block in the Groupbuy#30 but as you know, it is totally random. More informations here if you are interested : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5381245.0

2108  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Passphrase recovery with Btcrecovery on: March 21, 2023, 03:14:08 PM
I'm sorry to read that you lost access to your bitcoin.

However I'm not sure that I fully understand, did you lose the seed phrase associated with your ledger?
As far as I know, ledgers have a code with X digits, not a password in words, right?

Can you tell us which wallet you used when you created your password?
Normally your seed should be 24 words long, if you didn't add any. If your wallet was Electrum for example, then your seed phrase would only be 12 words.

Btcrecover is a great tool, as hashcat is too. But I am not sure to understand enough your exact problem to be able to advise 1 specific tool

Good luck with your coins!
2109  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: A website platform where you can list your coins and tokens for free on: March 21, 2023, 02:57:55 PM
From my side, I will not be in bad faith, the site is very fast. The pages load in two or three seconds maximum, it's very responsive. I don't know if the capacity of the servers is limited and if the site slows down a lot when it's busy, but after reading the previous feedbacks, I was pleasantly surprised by the navigation on the site.

The organization and the infrastructure of the site is rather clean, it is pleasant to navigate on it. I only use the dark-mode, so I didn't see the site without dark-mode but overall it didn't give me a headache.

On the other hand, there is a page that surprised me a lot : https://www.coinvotelist.com/kyc-project

Who would want to pay 1 or 1.5 BNB to pass your KYC?
You have no legitimacy to collect, store -and potentially resell- such sensitive personal data.
Who will guarantee that the site will not be down next week? What guarantee do you offer to those who decide to pay? Nothing about the storage, and the security of the said datas.

I find it very shady, we are supposed to contact you on Telegram, to pay you, all that to self-doxx myself to strangers? That won't give confidence to anyone.

2111  Other / Meta / Re: [Guide] Use Bitcointalk (more) privately on: March 20, 2023, 04:23:05 PM
If we wanted to go all the way, we would also have to delete the metadatas included in the photos of the narketplace's ads posted, not use an address that has been in contact with a CEX for a signature campaign (and I imagine that this is quite often the case).

In absolute terms, you should not buy or sell anything on the forum in order to protect your privacy. You don't know who you are sending your address to.

In my opinion, being careful on the forum is not especially necessary (even if I actively support the principle you defend in this post), because I am sure that a lot of members can be already linked to a deposit/withdrawal made from a CEX via an address they posted here. Even with all the effort, the CEX will cooperate with law enforcement if necessary, and the efforts to protect themselves here will have been for nothing.
2112  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: How my lack of knowledge has blinded me so far on: March 20, 2023, 04:05:19 PM
Like I said in one of my comments yesterday, there are several casinos that are abusing the privilege they have in asking users to pass a kyc verification, like you, I've heard and read stories, where users sign up on a casino, proceed to deposit money with out any problem, after gambling for a while, and maybe winning some good amount of money, the same user tries to withdraw, only then, they discover they have been blocked without any reason, and when the user tries to reach out to the customers support, he or she will be asked to submit kyc documents, this is after several days of waiting for a reply from them.
Things like this ought not to be, but the be because the government aren't doing much in the area of monitoring this online casino to make sure they play by the rules.

Some KYC analysis and validation providers can take up to 3 weeks to process one. This happens, for example Idnow which is the Binance provider for some European countries is known to be extremely slow during high volume times (for example when some websites launches welcome bonuses and promotion and there are a lot of newcomers which are doing KYC in the same moment)

Regarding accounts that get blocked inappropriately, in general, as mentioned above, it is because the player has exceeded the maximum thresholds for withdrawing funds without being checked.

99% of this is written in the terms of use and the players just haven't read them

2113  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: French Soccer League Predictions and Discussion Thread (Ligue 1) on: March 20, 2023, 04:00:03 PM
Even though PSG dominated possession, they were surprised by Rennes at the end of the first half. PSG didn't feel confident until the second half had to concede again for the second goal, this defeat actually embarrassed PSG at home because the visiting team was unexpectedly able to excel in this match.  Cheesy
Of course such a defeat is shocking especially because PSG are playing at home. Rennes managed to take advantage of their opportunities well where 2 of the 3 good opportunities were goals. Meanwhile, PSG, which actually managed to take 7 shots on target, failed to score a single goal. Steve Mandanda was really good in the match, he made 7 saves out of 7 PSG chances during the match.

I think Rennes is not too weak for PSG because they are a top Ligue 1 team that should be considered. This season Rennes are struggling to qualify for the Europa League if Monaco fail to maintain their position in the standings. Monaco's advantage is only about 3 points from Rennes, this is still very likely to be expected.

Genesio really implemented the right strategy to suppress the domination of PSG. can't believe PSG wasn't able to score at home even with enough chances created.
although the result did not affect PSG's standings, losing 0-2 was enough of a blow for them. no wonder they should be eliminated from the last 16 of the Champions League. a team like Munich is still too strong for PSG. with so many good players in the team, PSG is still lacking in their squad.

Exactly!

At the beginning I even wondered if the game had been rigged, I found PSG so bad, and so out of the game! Genesio really did well.

I have to tell you that I'm glad I made the decision to never bet in favor of Paris again. If tomorrow they were to play against a secondary city, I would ask myself the question, but they would still be able to disappoint me once again.

On the other hand, I am much less optimistic than piebeyb about Rennes. I'm convinced they'll get tired before the end of the season and go downhill, as often

2115  Economy / Speculation / Re: Price is looking positive green on: March 20, 2023, 03:50:51 PM
Yes, this is another proof that people who spend their time trying to predict future BTC prices on Twitter are just wasting time, and ours if we take some to read them  Cheesy

News are random in many ways, and so is their impact on the price of bitcoin. Not to mention that a few whales can also have a little fun with the price of the day.

In any case, it's been a very positive start of year for Bitcoin until now, both in terms of price and volume. I'm not one of those who think it will be $1 million in June - like the former CEO of Coinbase and his recent $1 million bet - but I don't pretend to know what the price will be in the future myself.

I don't know if this positive effect on the BTC price will last, I wonder if it's just a fad related to the current US and European banking problems, or if we're headed for a new higher threshold. The boomerang effect is also possible, and no one can say what tomorrow will bring.
2116  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: can't access electrum wallet on: March 20, 2023, 03:37:51 PM

Sorry Omega, I'm not versed in this stuff. I thought I entered the command correctly but I didn't get the response expected. I think I'm wasting everyone's time here since I don't understand the instructions I'm being given. I don't know what I'm looking at and don't know what's supposed to happen. I'm worried I'll do something that will make the wallet permanently inaccessible.

Just don’t panic.

1. Secure your seed offline and in a safe place : with the seed backed up, nothing can happen to your BTC even if you delete Electrum from your computer.
If you don’t know how to do it, click on the lock at the bottom right in your Electrum (see screenshot under my message). Write your 12 words and hide the paper as much as possible. This seed, as you probably already know, is the key of your BTC wallet.

2. Download Electrum from their official website (if you want you can verify the signature of the file to be sure it is an original one, but if you don’t know how do it, you could skip this step)

3. Open your new Electrum freshly downloaded

4. Create a new wallet > Standard wallet > I already own a seed and you write your seed previously backed up there (this step must be done offline preferably)

2117  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: How my lack of knowledge has blinded me so far on: March 20, 2023, 03:25:40 PM
There are people like me who dislike KYC verification requirements from online casinos, and I always have two complaints about it.

1. Why the need for KYC.

2. Why pretend they won't ask for KYC, but ask for verification after a big win.

I am not an expert on KYC, but from what I read in some casino terms and conditions is that KYC is many cases linked to hard cap. So the casino won't ask any detailed information from you when signing up, depositing money and withdrawing small amounts. KYC only comes into place when withdrawing fund bigger than 1,000-2,500 USD. On all the casinos where I play these numbers are made public and any gambler can read up on them. It's not some arbitrage numbers the casino uses to try and cheat us out I'd our winnings. Before playing with real money we should always read up all the necessary information. It's sad that you lost money because of it and if the casino changed their terms after you won money it's wrong and should be challenged. Over the years I kind of accepted KYC as it's becoming the industry norm.

You're right : reading the terms and conditions is very important for the user, it's in his own interest,  it allows him to be credible and in an intelligent position if a problem arises, and he has to dispute something.

For the first part of your message, it depends on the country and the market. If the casino in question is licensed in a regulated country, KYC may be required for every type of FIAT transaction, regardless of the amount.
Take France as example, where even a 0.01 EUR deposit will require KYC if the casino is licensed and under the French national gambling authority regulation.

In general, the casinos have three main criterias that are taken into consideration for the need/or not of KYC:
-Your current geographical location (your IP)
-The market in which you are registered (.com is licensed by Malta most of the time, .fr , .de , .jp etc..)
-The regulator in question: even taking the European Union as an example, the documents required are not the same for a Belgian citizen, for a German one etc. Some countries require POA+ID+Age verification, others only AGE+ID, others nothing at all because they use a centralized national number associated to the social security number etc..

Some countries are less stringent than others
