1921  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are there any Bitcoiners here who are living offgrid? on: April 26, 2023, 06:46:03 PM
I'm coming up to 81, and I'm a Bitcoin maximalist. I've rejected most of the current and other controls that try to restrict my lifestyle. I'm now living in a converted van, and I love the freedom. I'm considering a Raspberry Pi based installation to manage my Bitcoin node, and maybe do a bit of mining. Although I'm living primarily offgrid, I'm still a member of conventional society, and utilise thosed facilities that are useful to me. I'm monitoring the current banking changes, and hoping to increase my use of Bitcoin.
So, is there anyone else here that is questioning the current political and banking changes, and moving to an independent offgrid lifestyle?

It depends on what you call an offgrid lifestyle.

Personally, with my wife, we live in full autonomy regarding to electricity, water, fruits and vegetables.
We still use 4G to access the internet, still use banks and online banking, and we also pay some taxes.

We try to reduce our dependence on the government and institutions as much as possible. It is not very difficult as here, the government is like non-existing. We live without having to buy gas, because we don't need a car, and we buy very few things.
But of course, when we have to travel to other countries, we depend on planes, trains or buses.
I don't think we live totally offgrid, but it is very close.
Like you, I would like to be able to do more with Bitcoin, which for me is currently more of a storage value.

1925  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What things do you study while choosing a wallet? on: April 24, 2023, 05:37:16 PM
Personally I'm pretty old-fashioned when it comes to choosing my wallets.

I stick to Electrum and BitcoinCore. I use hardware wallets for what I hold for the very long term.

1. Custodial vs Non-Custodial   2. Open source vs Closed source
These two points of mine are very important for everyone to understand before choosing a crypto wallet for storing their digital assets.

Custodial Wallets
are wallet that takes control from users and decide to be their users private keys keeper, meaning they function just like the banks, they keep your assets for you, with this, many things can go wrong, they can decide to close down the business, and they will leave with your money, they have the keys in the first place.

Non-Custodial wallets
These wallets are better than custodial wallets because they give users access to their private keys or recovery seed, even if they go down some day you can easily import your recovery seed into another available wallet, everyone prefers using Non-custodial wallets because they are safer compared to Custodial wallets.

Open Source vs Closed Source
Open source wallets are more transparent, they leave every codes opened to the public, so when choosing a wallet, make sure they are open source.

I completely agree with you, these are the most important criteria to take into account when starting out and choosing your first wallet I think.

Otherwise OP, I can advise you this link which will help you to determine which wallet could correspond to your needs. Basically, you answer some questions and it suggests you a list at the end: https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet
1926  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Mystery Miner S5 Issues - Replaced power connectors on: April 24, 2023, 05:28:18 PM
If I am not wrong, if your ASIC is like on your photo, it could be a S15 instead of a S5.

Antminer S5 :

Antminer S15 :

Are you sure that you did a correct job when replacing the sockets ? It could explain this error

Did you try to isolate the issue with only 1 hashboard connected each try and with different ribbon data cables ?

Do you have the opportunity to try with another PSU ?

1928  Local / Produits et services / Re: [transacrypto] New Marketplace on: April 24, 2023, 03:57:17 PM

https://www.transacrypto.com/announce/e61f4975-5a30-483e-a31a-ba316dd53084

1929  Other / Meta / Re: Unofficial list of (official) Bitcointalk.org rules, guidelines, FAQ on: April 23, 2023, 07:45:44 PM
Even just using search engines to collate content for a post is use of AI. (Maybe not the search engine in THIS forum  Grin )

A little off-topic, but this search engine is a farce. Google is also not optimized to search for bitcointalk posts. I have been trying to scrape Bitcointalk posts to make an ElasticSearch search engine, but I need several TB of free disk space that I don't have.

Doing researches via ninjastic.space is giving great results!
I totally ignore the default search bar from the forum since I discovered this website
1930  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Building a mining pool on: April 23, 2023, 07:40:58 PM
I think you are pointing to a server that can handle many miners.  Then you need to host it on a VPS that doesn't have bandwidth limitation with 4GB of ram and enough disk space of 50GB and it must be fast there are some company offers fast server like Aws and Google and DigitalOcean.

The very important is don't limit the bandwidth because it can cause traffic limitations if you have many miners mining in your pool.

I would prefer to use other hosting services.

May I ask if you know better options than AWS or DigitalOcean ?
DigitalOcean is very good in my humble opinion. You can even pay with BTC/XMR.

If you want some opensource examples of solo pools :

-CKpool code : https://bitbucket.org/ckolivas/ckpool/src/master/
-Self-hosted pool, open source : https://github.com/tpruvot/yiimp
-P2pool : https://github.com/jtoomim/p2pool

It could give you some ideas about the software part.

You should post it in the Altcoins section of the forum.

The Project Development section is not the good place to find people motivated to talk about a scam coin

1933  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Historical background of GekkoScience miner on: April 23, 2023, 07:27:38 PM
I really like gekkoscience products, they are very stable and reliable. I like the idea of home mining.

I am dreaming of owning each product made by gekkoscience, my collection is almost complete but I never managed to find a good R808  Huh

I had one >1T share with a Gekko Newpac recently, and a 19T share with a R606 not so long ago.
I really like to use these ASICs to solo mine, and would like to own more R909s.

Can the speed of the underlying LINUX DISTRO affect Sidehacks performance?

I ask b/c I developed 2 lightning fast LINUX distros used by medical clients like hospitals which took tasks that ran 2 weeks of data for 1 hospital that required 5 hours to process 26 weeks of data for 2 hospitals in 72 seconds.

It boots off USB and a lot of my students use USB only devices so I wondered if I can steer them towards building machines w/ Sidehacks boards, but instead of sluggish LINUX distros base them on mine.

Any thoughts?

I use both Ubuntu server and Debian with XFCE desktop on the computers runnings gekkoscience ASICs. No difference between the OS, hardware is the exact same in my case.
I think what you are mentionning, regarding to gekkos, is more a question related to your CPU than your OS. IMO Linux will be ok in any case, always better than with Windows for example, more stable, more safe in many aspects.

You can save some (very few) electricity if you run a Ubuntu/Debian server without a monitor via ssh, or at least from TTY. I would not chose MacOS or Windows because of the updates and random reboots.

1935  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: wallet.dat - need help to recover with pywallet on: April 23, 2023, 07:08:01 PM
So where do I need to save this wallet, to bitcoin store app data file also?

You need to do a backup of your wallet.dat file. You should store this backup on a offline safe storage devise, please avoid cloud solutions!

Because right now i have pywallet in another file and wallet.dat in the same file.

What you mean exactly ? You mean you did a copy already ?

Otherwise, did you tried with sudo or with being logged as root ?
1936  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer S9 various errors on: April 23, 2023, 07:03:21 PM
Yeah you should try with some other pool  and check if the issue is solved or not.
You can just point it on solo ckpool for a while, and see if it's ok in your logs.

If Nicehash is the problem and you really want to use their pool, you could try with an alternative firmware. Be very carreful and double check before using any firmware, some are very shady. If I am not wrong all firmwares are not NH compatible, you will have to double check before.

1938  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Guys!! I was finally able to buy my home thanks to Bitcoin!!! on: April 22, 2023, 06:25:31 PM
This is a great motivation and evidence that Bitcoin can bring significant achievements to our lives. I know it's been a tough journey for you to attain your dream home, but you've persevered through it all and believe in Bitcoin. Can you share with us your investment strategies when it comes to Bitcoin? Or perhaps, could you kindly give us some tips to follow so we can accumulate enough funds through Bitcoin investment, which may enable us to buy a desired house or a fancy car?

Sorry, I don't really have any tips to give I think, I am not very legit to give some. All I did was buying / mining, accumulating, and hold.
As I had nothing to lose, I just bet on BTC and was lucky. Of course you need knowledges, understanding what you are doing, and to invest some real money, but I was lucky regarding of the difficulty of mining, the different prices I bought BTC with "big" amounts of fiat, and that the life didn't made things so hard that I must sell earlier.
For the mining part, I mined some sha256 altcoins, and always convert them in BTC. I paid almost nothing for electricity per kw/h so it was not too risky. The difficult part was to buy some Antminers at the beggining, but they were very cheap if I compare with the last I bought in 2021.
For the buying part, I just bought BTC each time I had money to spend on it. It was like a DCA strategy, I was buying regardless of the price at the moment.
It always takes some time (IMO at least one halving / 4 years) to be very profitable, but it depends of the situation of each person.
If I was located in the USA, the target needed would have been higher than in my actual location.

Quote
Sometimes, a story of someone rising up after a fall can make our motivation even stronger so we don't give up easily. Have you faced any difficulties or problems in the past five years that made it seem impossible to hold onto Bitcoin anymore?

Yeah I was hesitating to sell dozen of times... Sometimes I was like totally fiat broke, 0 on the bank account and the salary coming only in a long time. It was difficult to not touch the wallet but in reality I wasn't able to withdraw any sat during this times. I would have felt guilty if I did, and I had a clear target to reach, so it made it easier to hold.
The only times I didn't hesitate to use BTC was when buying more Antminers, because I was "sure" to earn more than what I spent, in a long term perspective. It was not always a clever choice, but globally it was profitable. I just lost some money with shitty Antminer S9k, some units were totally useless.

Thanks for the kind words, I think I answered to your message with the answer to bayu7adi  !

Well, I am so glad to hear that you are now the owner of your own property. I have helped other people to do the same and I count that as one of my own greatest accomplishments in life. These people were in the "mouse in the wheel" of life and they hardly had any savings, but through early investment and also good timing, they were lucky enough to sell their bitcoins for a huge profit and to pay off their houses.

A lot of people take the safe route by leaving their savings in their Bank accounts and getting the little bit of interest that does not even survive inflation. We take the risk to buy bitcoins and we reap the rewards by taking that huge risk on something that are basically still in the experimental stages.  Tongue
Thanks!
It's very nice that you shared your knowledges with these people !

I totally agree with you, it is very good to be in the loop still early, even if I would have start my BTC journey in 2010  Grin Grin Grin

Each time i come across this username, I've always wondered what made you chose such a name, I am glad that today, I've found the reason why and no need to wonder anymore  Grin.

A really big congratulations to you friend, though this might be coming late, but I believe its never too late to say congratulations to someone who truly deserve it, having one owns home is one of the best investments ever, and I am happy for you  that you were able to achieve this through bitcoin....

Congrat once again, and I wish you more good achievements going forward into the future.

Thank you so much ! Wish you the best too for the future !

Metamask failure ?
zero-day vulnerability disclosed in chrome ?
password manager hacks (LastPass, KeyPass, ...) ?
some backdoor in some wallets ?
a widespread malware that searches for seedphrases on devices ?
ChaosGPT ?
Nort Korea ?
access to clipboard history, via an extension ?
brute-forcing keys ?
