1521  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL 6 May 2013 ASIC Update on: May 18, 2013, 05:25:10 AM
That youtube video, the fake one that I thought was real when I first started to watch it, what was that guy really doing? Was just just burning a chip with a heat lamp? That of course was just an IC chip or something I think already soldered on the board. Was he just burning it to make a video for people to believe?

1522  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL 6 May 2013 ASIC Update on: May 18, 2013, 05:10:08 AM
I think this Project is and was for BFL too much ...

Orderded tons of "minirigs" boxes without any protoyp
ordered much boards without Chips ...
ordered Chips without knowing how it works and lost 5000 Chips ( 5 Wafer )

and now they get results to hot ... = new boards ... = new Boxes ... = new Design ... = new Price ...= New Boxes again .... =

This is indeed the very scary part for all of us preorder customers. With ASIC Miner starting to ship consumer units, and Avalon firing up the next batch, BFL needs to get their shit in order very soon, or they risk collapse from bad PR and complete loss of faith and confidence.

We're facing the possible reality that all our money will be lost not because BFL was a ponzi scheme, but because they were just that incompetent at pulling this ASIC project off, and ran out of money before they were able to resolve their problems and regain confidence from the community.

The people that lose their money if that happens is their own fault. I've said it myself over a dozen times to get refunds from BFL months and months ago. If the pre-order customer didn't request it and they lost their money they were so warned.

Oh man... you are such a WIZARD and obviously WAY smarter than about 99% of the people... IN THE WORLD.

now that I am done with the sarcasm, I'd say "No shit Sherlock".  I am someone with a Sept 1st order.. and I'll still be keeping my order.  Anyone who ordered that early took a gamble.  If people are so stupid that they need someone like YOU to tell them that then this community is full of idiots.  Unless a company has stock in hand, and is known to be shipping the product with no issues, and you ORDER from said company, you are taking a gamble.  People who ordered batch 1 of Avalon, were taking just as big of a gamble.  You choose your horse, then you ride it out.  Avalon won.. and those people picked the right horse, but people shouldn't be such pompous jerks to say "BFL is a scam.. get a refund!".  You don't have to say anything a DOZEN times.. that's 11 too many.  Just say what you want once, then let it play out.  The second that BFL's shops close down, don't return money, and all the people responsible move to South America... you can say "I told you so."  You have to be a supertroll to say "I told you so" to something that hasn't happened yet.

What happens if BFL ships (In greater quantity) and people receive their devices and gain any kind of profit?  I assume people like you will just create some other reason why they were still right... right?  If we are taking bets on the future, I'd bet you won't say a word about being wrong if it ends up that BFL actually becomes some sort of success.

..but then again.. keep talking people out of their preorders.  Hopefully that means I'll skip ahead of line by a little bit.  If they don't ship.. oh well.  It would suck, but people shouldn't be gambling with money they can't afford to lose.

Did you get beat up a lot when you were young or something? You gotta relax dude. Loosen the tie, unbuckle the belt, have a drink. Its frigid around here.
1523  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Scanning transaction history - How Long? on: May 18, 2013, 04:56:16 AM
So far it has been about 1.5 hours on "scanning transaction history". I also made sure BEFORE I loaded armory that my bitcoin daemon was all caught up. This is now a new problem. I had to previously create a entire virtual machine just for Armory so it wouldn't keep crashing all the time. There really isn't much more I can do besides more gum and duct tape to get this client running properly. It is hell to work with sometimes, especially when I need to use the bitcoin that is sitting in the wallet.

Can I import my armory wallet into another bitcoin wallet program? I may have to ditch armory all together because of the resources I'm using just to keep it working.

Thanks

Understood.  I'm working on it.

You can export your private keys from the wallet properties dialog, under "Backup Individual Keys".  You can get a list of them either using "PrivBase58" or "PrivHex(BE)".  You might have to remove the spaces and the prefix for it to import properly into another app.  I promised that the next update will have an option to remove those artifacts for you.

I am well aware of the problem, hence the warning on the downloads page about having sufficient RAM.  I'm working diligently, and hopefully will have something in the next few weeks.  Thanks for being patient, but I totally understand you wanting to get away from it for now.

By the way, did you switch you to the 64-bit download?  It won't improve scanning time (you need more RAM to do that), but it dramatically improves stability once it's loaded.

http://bitcoinarmory.googlecode.com/files/armory_0.88.1-beta_win64.msi

I was able to get into my wallet ONCE this whole week and sent all my coins to another bitcoin wallet. My armory wallet is finally empty and that was a long week battle trying to get that done. I'm currently using a 32bit version of Windows 7, so for me to increase my RAM I would need to completely wipe out the VM and start over with a 64bit VM. Arghhh...it just might not be worth it right now. That will take up a lot of time and resouces. Maybe, just maybe I'll add some memory into my Vsphere server and then change my 32bit VM to a 64bit VM and then use Armory on that. My problem is not scanning time, my problem is that it will scan forever. I left armory scanning for about 3 days this week and it never finished. What's happening when it does that? If I indeed had more memory would that still happen?

I guess my question is if I change over to a 64bit OS and change the memory setting to 8GB will the Armory client work?

1524  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Bitcoins Direct - Private off exchange sales by bank wire only 0.89% over spot. on: May 18, 2013, 04:42:55 AM
I'm not going to be laundering any money. I just want to buy bitcoins.

The uncle I mentioned is a blood relative (brother of my father) and we share the same last name (surname.) I can teach him to buy using GPG, but he's a senior citizen so that might involve more than a couple of emails and chats. He's been living in the United States for more than 30 years with 3 children (my cousins) and a few grandchildren.

It's that, or I fly to the US and open a US bank account; although that's going to be a problem for me since I've given up my green card years ago. I will have to fly in and land as a tourist on a multiple entry visa. I used to have a US bank account about 10 years ago when I was studying in UIC (University of Illinois in Chicago) and Northwestern University. So I had a state ID, a US driver's license, and of course my student ID. All expired now of course.

I want to buy as myself, not posing as someone else.

This could also be my excuse to revisit Six Flags or MGM or Florida. (I took a long road trip from IL to FL, with family, close to winter time.)

Really, isn't it easier to just find another service or way to buy bitcoin?
1525  Other / Archival / Re: Pictures of your mining rigs! on: May 18, 2013, 04:09:09 AM
I can see husbands telling their wives, "honey, its ok, I know it uses a lot of electricity and heats up the whole second floor of the house, but it does make us a little money and makes me happy".

Then you have the teenager or grown man that refuses to leave mommy..."Mom, I know the electrical bill was $945, I'll give you some bitcoin later on this month".

Oh stop it. All you guys that have Avalons have been making a TON of money here in the last few months. Literally thousands and thousands if you played your cards right, and to this day STILL raking in a good chunk of change. Yea, a little jealous. I would have loved to pay off some bills.

1528  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Swedish ASIC miner company kncminer.com on: May 18, 2013, 03:11:38 AM
So much (healthy) skepticism in this thread. As someone said, lots of green signals and no red ones here. This is not an attempt at scamming the community. The only question is whether they can deliver; they're obviously on the up and up on their intentions.

Since so many of you feel that they won't deliver, why haven't I seen anyone willing to sell their KNC pre-order?

Let's go, let's have it, who's got one and is now ready to sell it off? If you're convinced it's not worth it, should go cheap too, eh? Let's start some bidding, say 0.005 btc for a pre-order? Since some of you are convinced, apparently, that these pre-orders are less than worthless, and undoubtedly some of the so-convinced have pre-orders, why not?

Penny for your thoughts--dollar for your pre-order.

Hey, I'll sell mine. Smiley

When I log into my account on the KNCminer website I don't see any order history or anything. Does everyone see that same thing? I thought I use to see my place# in the queue. I do still have my original email that was sent to me. My place in the queue is at the end. It is #341. So this will give me the opportunity when the time comes to be able to buy one of their miners up to 500 units sold. I hope so.

1531  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Is wallet file protected? on: May 03, 2013, 10:57:25 PM
I just imported my wallet file. I wasn't asked any password or anything. After the import I saw my bitcoin in there with all my transaction history. Isn't the wallet file supposed to be encrypted and/or have a password on it somehow so that can't be done like that? I'm talking about the physical *.wallet file itself that is in the armory data folder. Is there a way to fully protect that wallet file?
You only need the password to sign/transact. AFAIK, an encrypted Armory wallet will show all funds and public addresses (along with associated transactions from the blockchain) whether you've entered your password or not, since this doesn't require the privkey. I don't *think* there's a way to change it, but you can ask (and log request with) dev by emailing alan.reiner@gmail.com

So basically if someone "hacked" my computer all they would need to do is grab my *.wallet file and then all they would need is my passphrase to spend the funds? The fact alone someone can blindly import my wallet file without any passwords or security and see my entire wallet history and transactions. I will definitely submit a request to have password protection on this. Even the original bitcoin.org wallet you can't just import it or see any history in it without first knowing a password.

1533  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Question about wallet(s) on: May 03, 2013, 04:00:10 AM
I created a VM just for Armory with Windows 7 so I could get it working with the latest version. I still have access to my original wallet file. I copied my wallet file to my new VM, but have yet to  import anything. I did make a transaction AFTER I copied my wallet and did add another receive address. Will that transaction and new receive address show up when I import the wallet?

Armory wallets are deterministic. If you make multiple copies of a deterministic wallet every copy will generate the exact same sequence of addresses.

The only way they would get out of sync is if you did something unusual like manually import a private key that was generated in another program. Generating a new address by clicking "Receive Bitcoins" is fine. All the other copies of that wallet will see the funds sent to that address.

So in theory I could create a new armory wallet. Make one transaction with it, then make a copy of the wallet file. Continue to use the wallet making hundreds of transactions. Then take that copy I made a while ago, import into Armory and I would see all that happened with that wallet?

We are curious about how/why business bank accounts can just close like that? It obviously was an on going issue with the bank or something? Why would a bank close an account that is in the black and making them money?

We were advised the depositor agreement can be ended by either party at any time for any reason (including a lack of reason).  PNC chose to end the depositor agreement.  There was no "ongoing issue", they provided no recourse, no remedy, no appeal, and no reason for the closure.  To date we have (AFAIK) no complaints, no investigations, and no instances of fraud (real or reported).  The account was never frozen or (once again AFAIK) subject to any fraud hold.  We were able to wire out the closing balance (down to the penny) without issue.

To confirm, the only way for me to cash out any bitcoin I had would be to have you guys send me a check right?
Until such time as we have Treasury Management features (batch ACH & wire) at another bank where we hold accounts the only payment options will be company check, Dwolla, or PayPal.  Unrelated to this closure we have some liquidity issues which are resulting in demand greatly outstripping available supply so all payment options are routinely out of funds.  A fix is in the works but no ETA is available.

Now it is even more interesting to me since it was closed with no reason out of the blue. Either way there was someone behind a computer reviewing the account in some manner and closed it for a "reason" we will never know. I doubt it was in error or a random computer glitch. Could you guys write a request as to why it was closed, or you don't care? I'm sorry for bringing it up again it is just turning into a murder type mystery book here. I guess anything bitcoin related has these tendacies to isolated out.

I might not of worded it right, but if someone walks into a Toyota dealership and asks how one of their cars compares to a ford you get a discussion.

Now I feel I interrupted an infomercial - I guess I don't know how these forums all work

Sorry bud

Of course you can compare and talk about the differences between all the exchanges and markets all you want, just making sure it is done in the right place. A thread called "CryptoCurrent // Bitcoin Sales - Simple & Secure", wouldn't be the first place I'd want to look for a comparison on bitcoin sales and service. And it is ok we quoted your post, we are just adding more popularity to this thread. Smiley

1537  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Where did the stability go? on: May 02, 2013, 02:46:41 AM
When I first started to use Armory I didn't understand it. I thought it was just another bitcoin client. Then after using it for a few weeks I realized how good of a client it really was and how it out performed any others that were available to use. So I continued to keep using it but it seems to just crash more and more. The stability problems really started bad when I upgraded to the latest version. I have to constantly uninstall it and then re-install it to get it to load properly and sync up with all the transactions. I'm almost use to doing that now I've done it so much. My girlfriend watches me use the program and sees me always uninstalling it and then re-installing it and thinks I'm crazy.

I'm running Windows 8, 64bit. I run Armory of course in administrator mode and have tried pretty much all the compatibility modes there are. The one thing I have yet to really try is to whip up a VM with Windows XP and try that, but I can't see myself doing so much troubleshooting and testing for something that may never get fixed?

If there is something else that anyone needs or wants please let me know. I can pretty much make the program crash on demand by just running it most of the time. Here are a couple of recent crashes from my event log. Does Armory have compatibility issues with Windows 8? Maybe I should try a VM and use Windows 7?

So, if there is anything you want me to try/test please let me know.

Also as of right now I'm unable to create a digital backup of the wallet. When I'm at the save prompt box I can hit the "save" button 100 times and nothing will happen. And usually at that point it will crash also. Right now I do have a paper backup which I have printed out and I have also saved it as a digital file on my computer to kind of mimic my digital backup. Can I just copy my .wallet file? Is that the same thing that the digital backup makes?

Thanks

Yes, copying the wallet file is same as a digital backup.

Yes, I'm suffering, too.  I have endless people emailing (and posting) about these problems, and I definitely feel the pressure.  This last release has really caused more problems than it fixed.  And I want to fix those problems, but they are going to be obsolete with the next upgrade, so I'm focusing on getting that next upgrade out, even if it means being a little less responsive.  I think a lot of these problems will just magically disappear.

Hang tight! (and send me a log file... I've never seen the digital backup dialog throw an error Sad)

After some more suffering and not able to access some bitcoin from a wallet I couldn't access because I couldn't get the program to successfully run properly I ended up using the older version where you need to run the bitcoin daemon sync first then run Armory on top of that. Even though that takes forever when loading it does work and takes me to my wallet. Since accessing my Armory wallet is such a time consuming process I created a completely brand new VM on my Vsphere server just to run the bitcoin daemon and Armory all by itself and just keep them running. So all in all things are at least working again with the older version. I look forward to an updated release later on.

Also, can Armory access the wallet file from multiple locations?

Have you tried Coinbase?

They are pretty quirky but it is probably the cheapest and fastest way to lock in a btc price.. the catch is they deliver the btc 4 or 5 days later for whatever reason, and also they can limits per day that when it triggers they will then sell you at a future date/price (doubt anyone does this, and rather tries the next day for the lock in price)

anyway, they are useful but odd.  You just attach a checking account to them

Dude, what the hell? Go ahead and post that on Coinbase's thread or something. Why would you post that right inside of Crypto's thread? Please edit or remove it.

I don't mind waiting and I sure as heck wouldn't want you spending ANY time on something that will be obsolete. I'm still hoping for a BTC to USD right on the Armory program. Instead of me always hitting preev, I can then just look at my Armory window. Log on its way.
