I've been using Corsair 1000W supplies since I first started mining. I dual mined Eth + Siacoin / Decred and found the PSU pushed to the limit with 6 RX480s.

I've since stuck with mining Eth-only, but I'm building some new rigs for mining (6 RX470 4GB cards) and want to explore dual mining again. For dual mining Eth + second coin, is 1200W power supply enough?

I run 20 rigs, 10 rigs are Sapphire rx 470 8g, and 10 rigs are Sapphire rx 480 8g, and all rigs are run with an eVGA 1300W psu.  I am dual mining ETH/DCR and run the DCR up to maximize output without hurting my ETH production.  That tends to lend itself to 1100W of power which is right at 10.0A of current on the 480 rigs.  Since I run 2 rigs off of one 20A breaker, I run a 470 rig and a 480 rig together because the 480's pull more power but can mine at a slightly higher rate and I control to a total load of 19A to make sure my breakers don't trip due to the swings in the process and power supply from the city.  All of my cards run a Mod'd bios and I run my cards to get 28.0 Mhs on the 470's and 29.0 Mhs on the 480's.  Depending on how you run your systems, I would recommend the 1300W psu since they are not much more expensive and it gives you some room on the DCR if you are only going to run one machine per circuit.  The more DCR you mine, the more power you will consume.  Plus, it will keep you away from the ragged edge of pushing you psu out of its control power factor.  Going up to a 1600W psu doubles the price and is only relevant if you have the room to pull that kind of power on your circuits.  Hope that helps.

Can someone help me figure out why I can't get anymore than 22 MH/s on my MSI RX 480 4g Armor? I keep seeing people say how they're getting 28-30 on a similar card, but I can't figure it out. I've tried a different Bios and Overclocking, but it really doesn't seem to do much. Is there a specific Bios for this card that I need to us? It has Hynix memory. It just feels really weak to what everyone else is getting.

Numbers reflect better quality cards.  Even with the same exact model of graphics cards if you have 10 of them, 2 will perform better than the others and 1 or 2 will have a hard time with modded bios at all.

One of my Nitro+ Sapphire rx 480 8GB is bad like that. It doesn't play well with any modded BIOS. Another works fine with modded BIOS and can do the 29 MH.

Some people are also quoting numbers from 6 months ago.

And a few people lie.

For the 7970, it is less than 10 MH/s .

it used to be 20 for that.... damn that has gone down quite a bit

I'm pretty sure that with a RX 480 4GB 1750mhz memory you should be doing about ~27 mh/s eth with modded bios and a bit higher mem speed

I'm going to have to chip in here about the msi armor.  Its actually a great card for mining.  Now i'm talking about the 470 4g as I dont have any armor 480s, but still should be similar.

So you get anywhere between 27-28.5 mhs with your memory clock between 1925 and 2025.  Core clock is down to 1050 to 1125 depending on the card.  Voltage is way down, around 0.88v should be pretty stable (again, this depends on each individual card).

So DDU your rig. Install 16.11.x drivers as an example.  Then Polaris Bios Editor.  Open it, and change your memory straps from 1500mhz, or 1625mhz, all the way up to the max.  save the original (dont forget).  flash bios with atiwinflash.  Reboot.  Install msi afterburner, set core clocks and memory clock, voltage.  Reboot again (important).  Run claymore.  And you should get good results.  This applies to hynix and samsung, maybe elpida but i havent done elpida memory in a little while, so i dont know if you can change it with polaris bios editor.  Anyways its pretty straight forward, win10.  set virtual mem to over 20gigs.  dual mining pascal, set -16 or something like that.  have fun and im not responsible for your bricked cards, neither am I for spilled beer on rigs.

I know Nhando swears by his MSI Armor until they didn't do very well at honoring their warranty.

My point isn't that the MSI Armor isn't a good card (We know it's a good brand), it's that he might have a card that isn't quite as good. It passed enough of MSI's checks to run at standard settings but for whatever reason isn't easily modified. Since he only has 1 card it's hard to say if it is the card or if it is user error.  If he had 5 cards and only 1 was acting up we'd know for sure it was that card and he could RMA it.

Great post and I second this post, and have seen the same.  When I was mining Zcash, I could get 6 new cards and 5 would mine all day with a mod'd bios, and one would require overvolting and modifications and I would just send it back for a replacement and claim it sucked.  Happened several times, so not all cards are the same.  I have found the rx 470's to be more stable and use less power than the 480's overall.  However, I like the fact that the 480's can duel mine with more production, even if they use more power.  Right now, it is more profitable for a 480 because the price of DCR and ETH are up so much.  A few months ago, a 480 could mine Zcash at a 10% higher rate, but they cost 15% more and they use 9% more power.  Hopefully we are past those days.  As far as the 4g cards, just expect less and you will feel better when you can't get what others claim.  Plus, I have seen higher hash rates when I do ridiculous settings on my cards, and if I left them running like that they would have died in a month.  You have a fixed cost sunk into your equipment, running it to an early failure will not net you out better in the end.

Is there a trick to getting this miner to behave properly on nicehash? I've followed the example in the readme for ETH only mining on nicehash, but all my rigs eventually all crap out randomly when (I'm assuming) nicehash switches between different coins that require different DAGs.

What I mean by crap out, is every cards goes bad at the same time and stops mining, but without actually crashing. I can just restart claymore and be on my way again.

I've always just mined on straight ETH pools and never had an issue.

the miner still reports for nvidia that 368.xx drivers are the best for compatibility, is this accounting the last driver 378.78?

When you say change the memory straps, do you mean copy the value from one of those points and put it on the memory ratings to keep the timing lower them while it's running at a faster mem speed?

Quoting you again. I followed this exactly, and it worked. I'm up to 25+ already, and that's without any major tweaks, just upped mem clock to 1825. Thanks so much, I've been working on this for over a week. I think what happened last time was when I did the modded bios I didn't take the value the correct way. Also using DDU was probably helpful, I hadn't used it before just manually uninstalled it all. Thanks a bunch man.

Another update: Up to 28.5 Stable with Mem clock at 2000, pushing pretty much anything past that doesn't seem to work, but I am VERY happy with that speed. Thanks once again @fr4nkthetank.

On my all RX470 4Go rig, when i use Claymore's dual miner, the primary adaptor will hash at only one third of the other GPU's speed (12MHs vs 30MHs on eth, 140MH vs 380 MH on DCR). I tried to play with the intensity and even tried the -li mode, no change. :s
It's quite odd as i don't encounter that problem mining on the other currencies (ZEC / CN are okay).

I have similar issue with mining ETH, ZEC and XMR with Claymore's miner. It started just several days ago with one of my machines. Mining starts with expected hashrate, then goes down and down until miner stops to work. I didn't update BIOS, drivers, Windows - nothing. I have 2 RX480 Red Devils in that rig. Another rig with 3 Devils works fine - no issue. Both rigs run Windows 7 64 with 16.10.3 drivers. I tried newer drivers, tried different BIOSes (stock, Boysie's), tried different intensities - nothing helps. Cards are running cool. GPU load is 100%, but hashrate is just dying every second during several minutes... What da hell? Can't think of anything. Could somebody help? Thanks.

PS: Cubirez, check if one of your cards is running in CrossFire mode. This kills the hashrate. Crossfire should be disabled.

Thanks man, very useful information! I'll try to hunt down those EVGA 1300w units, if unavailable will settle for the HX1200i
