Hey Everyone,

I purchased Margin several weeks ago.  I ran the Bollinger Band bot for a while and was able to make some profit, about 2%/day at first, using some slightly adjusted Bollinger Band settings and a .25% minimum gain, but no stop-loss.  I started running into an issue, though.  Every now and then a coin pair would keep dropping in value after the bot bought and it wouldn't come back up for several days or even weeks (some still haven't).  It was a little concerning at first, but after a while it started accumulating to the point where almost all my money was held up in these unfinished trades because the value hadn't come back up.  This decreased my daily profit and eventually got to the point where I had almost no available money to trade with.

So, I stopped trading for a while and just ran tests.  Since Margin doesn't have a backtest feature (which would be awesome...hint, hint), I set up a few computers with the demo running trying different settings (bollinger band levels, min effective gains, stop-loss, etc.).  I've been able to increase the daily profit to 3-4% (at least in the tests) (40/40 bollinger bands and 1% min eff gain), but I haven't been able to find a solution to these unfinished trades.  Automatic stop-losses almost always result in daily losses instead of profits.

Has anyone else run into this?  What strategies have you implemented to keep your money from getting tied up waiting for them to become profitable trades?

I'm at a loss at this point.

Thanks!
Yes, I think most of us have run into this. This morning's 8 AM across the board correction was pretty awful for me and I am straining to stay in the right frame of mind, your timing was very good, I think writing about it will help ease my pain.

I went through everything and moved the stop loss from 6% to 8%. The reason for the problem to begin with is also a good thing.. n00bs. If it were not for the fresh blood the market would stagnate. What we are seeing is exactly what happened in November and December of last year.

Your stop loss size should reflect the size of the coin you are trading, the smaller the coin the more volatility. At present I am going through one of those phases where I am not trading anything larger than. 0.00009999, so my stop loss needs to be bigger. Previous to this week a 6% stop loss would handle 95% of my trading, now with this craziness, 8% will handle maybe 60-70% of the market conditions that I trade in. I hope this is good enough.

I had the same trouble as you, a slight market shift and a coin pair drops 14% no big deal, this is the wild west after all, ..but then it stays there for days and weeks. Screw it take your freaking losses, my pairs normally hit every 8-36 hours if I leave it hanging for 6 days that is a potential for how many trades?

A couple of other things. If you set your stop loss huge, they will trigger less frequently but there will be larger losses and it will happen! The bot has no freaking idea the coin pair is trading at a 3 month high and just keeps going, eventually (at least once) the pair will crash and potentially double what your stop loss is set at so if you make too much allowance be prepared.

Look at this article. Internalize it! Allow your mind to hover over each percent descending until your stomach roils, that or above is your tolerance level for losses do not exceed them or you will feel the same thing over and over each time your stop loss triggers.
https://www.investors.com/how-to-invest/investors-corner/still-the-no-1-rule-for-stock-investors-always-cut-your-losses-short/
(there are other more gradient tables which I prefer, it is the best I could do on short notice that drives home the point)

Dissolve emotional ties with all coin pairs, some are performant only because of the people trading them. Ditch the bad ones or the ones with too much noise around them, this week I dumped XVG and NCASH and felt nothing but profound relief.

Yeah, lesterj  we all bleed from the same things in different ways, there is no shortcut. Use the demo, that is a good move, I do that too when trying to work something out. Do your math, whatever is the most sustainable approach will probably be the best for you, because like in poker the last one at the table goes home with the most coins.

I do believe I feel better already, STORM just handed me a very unexpected 12.6% gain and it is time for lunch. Yea!  Grin

nobody gives a fk about drawing tools if they cant be used as bot conditions

maybe try work on getting it to run for more than 24 hours without crashing
or at least a button to resume all bots after a crash

I'm up for that!

I wondering do you have any plan to add decentralized cryptocurrency exchanges in near future?

Yes... Stop using Bollinger Band bots! Thats my suggestion. Grin

There aren't too many other options with the Margin software.  I don't think the other bots work as well.  I would love to have something more complex that looks at several signals at once.

We have 3 bots right now, but more are in the works. Actually we completely re-worked the entire bot interface in our code base when creating the Bollinger Band bot and with this new basis adding new bots is much easier.

So expect many more over the coming weeks and months Smiley

Merging functionality with astonishing visuals: that's Margin. When the market isn't favorable to bots, I do manual trading using these awesome features (the multiple indicators, candle sizes quick switch, market depth etc.). The drawing tools with Fibonacci will add a great value to the app. Looking forward for the release!

Thanks a lot dbolivar!

Hi margin team!

Quick question, I might just be missing something obvious but when using the program on bitfinex a couple of currencies are just straight up showing as 0 all the time in my wallet after buying; on the website I can see my balances but never in the client which keeps the bot from selling. This applies to IOTA (IOT in margin), TRX, ZRX, SNT, OMG and several others. Is this a known issue or?

Sounds good.  I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with next.  Like I said in my previous post, being able to use multiple signals (Bollinger, MACD, RSI, etc.) would be great.  And, if I have your ear anyway, the ability to check settings against the past few weeks of actual trading data would be great, too.

Thanks and great work.

Hi sapphira,

Yes, I'm afraid its a known issue. For some reason the API sometimes delivers zero balances for some currencies which messes up everything. The problem is intermittent.

Best wishes,
Jonathan

hello...

just started using leonArdo, and find its UI extremely powerful. The "indicators" as you call them, are such a great idea to model ones favorite view -
there is huge potential. The toolbar is in my perspective the second big selling point and can be used to construct a fantastic overview of the market - especially with abundant screen estate. And then there is this probably unique UI responsiveness. It is so refreshing to operate a non-java-script UI for once. Thank you so much for this product.
Having praised that much, I am slowly starting to encounter the limitations (trivial limitations mostly). Would it be appropriate to suggest/discuss feature requests here? Or do you have a different forum for that?

As far as I know the best method for getting assistance and feature requests is writing them directly support@margin.de. This puts it right in front of them and they don't have to comb the forum looking for what may be important to people, although they try, the direct method is the best. Either way they are very receptive, but keep in mind [reminding myself here] they are building a business and a platform so not every whim is going to be catered to.  -I have already been in contact with them several times today..  Grin

Hi everyone.
Did somebody get any good results for the first part of 2018? If yes, what strategies did you use?

Actually, any results would be useful info Smiley I want to understand if somebody is earning something with this bot.

Guys, everydays crashing of Margin (and Leonardo) is terrible. It happens on all of my very different PCs with win 7 and 10 and it happened also on Ubuntu. If you are unable to fix it, could you add some config backup routine?? Because after most of crashes all the bots disappear and we must set everything again and again. So simple backing up of config each 10 minutes and possibility of selecting this config at next start would save a ton of work.
Thanks

Are we still in the first part of 2018? If so mixed answers from me, up through February 5th, I was treading water trying to keep the satoshi count up. Last half of November and most of December were great, the market changed after the beginning of the year, things started to falter by mid-January as the powers that be were hell bent on destroying cryptocurrency (they lost). February 5th everything crashed, I am sure others did better than myself but I was nuked back to the 5th of November. Other factors that cut deeply was volume, Bittrex was doing $2B+ a day, they are only doing between 1/6 and 1/8 of what they were doing in volume. mArgin maker and Bollinger Band are both more receptive to higher volumes. Of course all of this is in my opinion, but take advantage of the exchange with the largest volume available to you.

To be clear it is not a turn-key system to riches. I paid my dues and spent many months figuring things out and studying up on the market and how to properly apply the Bollinger Bands. Life's lessons so to speak. No one setup is going to satisfy everyone's risk level or trading style. In the current market almost anyone could make money using margin, just be wary of sudden market shifts.

All is not doom and gloom though, here are my last 4 weeks results. I don't make money, I just collect satoshi.  Cheesy

I guess everyone knows about the save button but thanks.
But it doesn't solve this problem because after most of crashes bots just disappear. Maybe there is some autosave function which causes crashes and corrupts bots-config files?
