You are only remembering facebook now and recent past. There were doing heavy marketing in the beginning.

They were? I thought it spread through word of mouth across colleges. In fact you had to have an e-mail address issued by a university. Or maybe I am talking about the very beginning.

I am quite sure they had nearly no avertisement and most traffic generated through WoM. That with the email at universities was in the very early beginning.

Depends on the time what you mean with "beginning".
Think they did no marketing to any king of endusers. They spend a lot of money for marketing to get advertising partners to earn the money.

When they talk about decentralization, they speak about removing control over personal data and removing ads.

But this is not decentralization. This social network will still not be able to function without a central server, will it?. Or am I missing something here?

You cannot call something decentralized if you just remove ads from it.

I guess it refers to the decentralized access to your personal data by being enabled to sell it on your own instead of the network itself.

Yes they will need both. Marketing is critically important because the environment where they are operating in has a few competitors and even if they a very good product, an inferior product could overtake them due to the impact of marketing

Yes they will need both. Marketing is critically important because the environment where they are operating in has a few competitors and even if they a very good product, an inferior product could overtake them due to the impact of marketing

Interesting, can you name some of those competitors? I never heard of another blockchain based social network

Sphere might compete with traditional, centralised social platform, like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and so on. It has huge potential due to it based on decentralized ideas.

Don't forget reddit guys. It's very good to read opinions there. I like projects which have a big community there the most.

Yeah, Reddit was always ahead of all in terms of news. Apparently, they take into control cryptonews as well. I like that people there try to have an unbiased opinion, like Wiki; therefore one may form his/her own idea (not dictated by others) about the project

Normally, if a project has a large community it is a guarantee of success since it already has a large number of users, who use the platform and who are likely to told about it to their nearby people.

I am not a friend of Reddit. Of cause it is better than one topic in BCT but I dont linke the overview. Much better is a discord channel for communication and a own forum to structure the information. Of cause this does make sense only in large projects.

In bitcoin blockchain, every one can send/ receive money (bitcoin) but only the amount that confirmed by the network (mining system) is valid.
I think decentralized social network may work in the same way.

No thats not what it means. There must be some kind of control, in any other way, you would create a platform for illegal content
