Merit & new rank requirements

A question, since you receive merits/2 as sMerits, and when you send those sMerits to others, they will get halved too, doesn't it mean that someday, all sMerits will be 0?

There are more merits will be credited to the forum and merit sources will receive them. In turn, they will help to distribute those credited sMerits to forum community.

There are 97 merit sources with a total merit generation of up to 21171 sMerit per 30 days

If there were no merit sources your statement would have been true but since merit sources receives a certain amount of sMerits, the number of sMerits will never end. This is why there is no reason to hold the sMerits as we will never have shortage of them.

I've heard, that local boards have different number of merit source. There are people, that due to some reason, evade leaving their local board. That means chances for them to get merit is lower, compared to others.

Maybe, there are people who hold merit to award people in their local board, not like "I'll give that person 1 merit, and 1 merit to the other", but make a  great task (for example translation of a guide, or gather info/make a reach/make a huge explanation post). Of course such work require great reward. Maybe for such occasion people hold merit.

These are just my thought. Maybe you are right and it is useless to "hold the sMerits" ? Who knows, I'm just an inexperienced guy with 1

Don't move out of local boards, people will restrict themselves to only what is written in their local boards, by their locals. That in turn will restrict them to learn knowledge (forum rules, and crypto knowledge).

What do you think if you compare the time spent for initial threads and for translation threads?
- Creators of initial threads do have to spend more time to read, learn, compose, compare knowledge from different sources before making their own threads. It is not an easy task.
- Translators have much easier tasks: read, understand initial threads and translate them to locals.

The problem under the iceberg in local boards is there are less helpful and valuable threads compare to international boards.

This is a more realistic reason to be accepted. Providing sMerit on quality posts is what is recommended regardless of ranking. Most source merit to distribute their sMerit when they find quality post when they are active on various discussion board.

The question of the amount in my opinion each giver has his own reason and cant be separated from how much the benefit and influence of the post on the person of the giver and also on other user. If 20 merit ​​sent for one transaction can confuse you, how about 50 ?

Although there is a possibility, but not many people want to do it. A well built account is worth more than money. They can even lend money in urgent situation if the account already has a good reputation without having to sell it.

Stacking up sMerit in account is of no use in my opinion, and is very rarely done by most of the recipients of merit that contribute. When you receive merit, you must also give it even if its not for the same user.

If you want to be a merit source:

 1. Be a somewhat established member.
 2. Collect TEN posts written in the last couple of months by other people that have not received nearly enough merit for how good they are, and post quotes for them all in a new Meta thread. The point of this is to demonstrate your ability to give out merit usefully.
 3. We will take a look at your history and maybe make you a source.

I am especially eager to have merit sources in sub-communities such as the local sections.

No, there's no particular rank, it's down to the admins' discretion to decide which member is somewhat established enough.

Do you mean if you can recommend your own posts as part of the required ten. No, you submit posts of others.
Your personal posts quality however would determine the first criteria.

The primary aim of merit sources is to find and merit deserving posts. If you find a post that deserves merit, you should give some whether or not other users have merited it.
This may be confused with the 10 under merited posts requirement - that is to check your ability to judge quality posts, without simply following recommendations from others (i.e, posts they merited)

No. It's a voluntary work, and there's no personal gain.

Since June, you have received 24 merit and have 12 available to send smerit. So far you have sent only 4. That goes opposite direction of what you have written  I guess you are just keeping them for something useful and special.

And yes, sending more than 10 merit for a post confuses me (if this is not a guide, translation or something unique). Sending 50 for a single post - I will never believe there is no shady actions behind this. In my opinion, this person would better reward 50 posts/members, then just giving such a huge amount to a single post/member.

No, but merit sources have freedom to achieve their own aim (while remain merit underappreciated post/thread), such as focusing post/thread on specific local boards.
Many merit source openly says they'll focus on specific local boards, which is fine.

I guess theymos is doing shady action since he sent 50 merits for many 10th anniversary art contest (1, 2, 3 & many more) and even technical research (Anonymous Atomic Swaps Using Homomorphic Hashing)

This is why I had given all my smerits to user's post I consider helpful. I even spent on this thread to theymos for bringing the forum in good guidance because of this merit system. I reviewed this thread being made and absolutely found out that because of this merit system the forum had made a change that minize the shitposting activity.

Hoarding smerits also would not be a good idea. The reason is because one may become suspicious of holding it giving it to someone or sell it to the wrong user just to earn money.

So, to all users out there let us help the forum by not holding the merits instead spend it to the post which impressed you even in a little. 1 merit could already be ideal to a post if you are not really impress or you think helpful at least to others.

No mandatory requirements on each rank but you have to be a real asset of the forum to be accepted with your merit source application. I don't know who was the lowest ranked merit sources at beginning or early months in the history of merit system. Now, if you observe the Merit source application observer, you will see it is very hard to get acceptance from theymos.

Your post quality makes sense as one of very important thing theymos will consider your merit source application. If your post quality is too low that is somehow reflected on one's earned merits, you will not be able to verify post quality of the others.

Not exactly like that. Merit the posts deserve merit, no matter what such posts received merit before or not. There is no additional/ secondary aim: the ultimate aim is written in OP.

I'm hoping that this system will increase post quality by:
 - Forcing people to post high-quality stuff in order to rank up. If you just post garbage, you will never get even 1 merit point, and you will therefore never be able to put links in your signature, etc.

No. Merit sources are given sMerits to distribute to the forum community. They don't receive a single merit for their works. Why do you ask so?

It is easy to do, check it yourself. Click on my post (this one) or any post of the others, include yours. You will see your available merits.

The future you see is a round one, if you have a half merit, it will be not reflected on that figure. But you can guess, if your total merit is an even your smerit is an even too. Only if your total merit is an odd, your smerit will be an odd.

You have received a total of 264 merit. This is what determines your forum rank. You typically cannot lose this merit. You have 48 sendable merit (sMerit) which you can send to other people. There is no point in hoarding sMerit; keeping it yourself does not benefit you, and we reserve the right to decay unused sMerit in the future.

I edited my post, highlighted it. I earned 264 merits so that I have 132 smerit to send out but as you see, I only have 48 available smerit to send out. I sent out most of my smerit.

but why do you think that you have send out most of your available smerit, when you have 48 to send, it is something about 35% from all available, so it is not that you have send all, or rather most, it is closer to a half

i did not look much on that earlier, but it is an interesting subject to see how users are sending their sMerit
