Pro-tip

go out and buy 10 M5x10mm screws for each device, they replace the screws that are too short for the heatsinks

Thank you for you words explaining the type of feelings I have had with this venture too!  I am going to be so glad to get all my machines settled and hashing consistently.

As for you machine dropping 75% of it's hashing power, can you post the API Log from that miner.  Perhaps I can help find the problem.

The wiki is down for the last couple of days as something is hogging the processing power for the whole server, I am trying to resolve this and get it back up and open.  I have a lot more information to post.

Thank you
Mtnminer

I appreciate the response and also fully appreciate the time and effort people, like yourself, put into trying to help others; my thoughts weren't meant to challenge your conclusion. Like yourself, these BTMiners have been quite a journey is human emotions, from suspicion, to desire, to irrational panic buying, to concern, to utter deflation, to hope, to surprise, to realisation and finally to disappointment.

My situation gets stranger still, as one of the slow operating miners has been working at 200Ghs for the whole day, whilst I was at work, and then decides to take itself down to 40Ghs for my return. Maybe it has bitminerphobia   Huh

Also, mtnminer, have tried to connect to the Avalon wiki on http://www.newworldz.net/Chinese_Avalon_Clones but it has been unavailable for the last few days. Not too sure whether you're working on it.

Actually is possible for two of your power supplies to be  weak and on not weak.  If poor quality component were used in the manufacturing of the power supplies they will not be consistent in performance from one to another.  Electronic components have specs to certain tolerances.

You can buy many different resistors with the same value, but different ratings for the acceptable range of variation.  20%, 10% 5% and even 1%  you pay more per piece for the more precision rating.  The same with capacitors many may be rated the same for voltage and other ratings but have different heat tolerances.  If the temp exceeds the specified tolerances the loose efficiency and can cease to function.  This applies to almost every electronic component used in manufacturing a power supply.

As an RF Engineer (radio engineer) I had to be very careful with the specific parts and their tolerances as these parts were used to generate and control frequencies.  We had to stay on frequency and within a very narrow margin of power output.  Every part was exposed to rf and heat.  There is much more involved in how parts react to these factors than I can explain in the response.

It is true you get what you pay for, these factors stated above are why some power supplies are more efficient and more reliable than others.  These Chinese power supplies are very cheaply built and do not use high quality, precision parts and that is why they are flakey and unreliable.

I am sure there are others here who can vouch for what I am saying, if you desire take some time and do some research and you discover what I have said is true.  If your one Chinese power supply is holding up, it means you were lucky and got on that exceeds the average!

Mtnminer

Having similar fan problems with 2 of my 3 with factory standard PSU. However as there is one machine running at full speed, I'm amiss to think that the PSU's cannot provide enough power, as the 3rd one wouldn't mine at 200Ghs+.

Even taking the chip frequency down to 300 doesn't cause the fans to start.
Strangest behaviour is that from a cold start, machines and fans work fine. Problems start once they reach working temperature.

What fan speeds are you seeing on your units.  I am getting 2880 rpm on the upgraded power unit running at 1500 mhz.  My other three units with the factory power supplies just can not keep the fan speeds up and I an running them under clocked until my other eight upgrade power supplies arrive.  They are all running fan speeds at about 2280 rpm, if I raise the mhz the fans speeds drop and eventually quit due to the weak factory power supplies!  One is still sitting cold just our of the box, waiting for the power supplies to arrive.

Your fan speeds are excellent, is this with stock or upgraded power supplies.

Just wondering what is the best setup of fan speed that everyone is going for ?
Me after 3 weeks with my machines, the best combination for me is:

Chip Frequency(Default: 300) 1300 or 1400 (1500 drain too much energy, and increase the % of error too much so no point…
Target Temperature: 65
Overheat Cut Off Temperature: 75
More Options(Default: —quiet): --avalon-fan 20-20

These setup are giving me:
Temp1: 25
Temp2: 65
Temp3: -1

Yep, there's no way you're going to be able to run at 1500 with those temps at that fan speed.  If I don't do anything to the fan speed, I'm at 29 and 41 and I can run 1500 no problem with about 4% error, which is perfectly fine.

Here are my Fan Speed: (all at 1300Frequency) Room temperature 22/25°C
Machine 1=> Fan1:4080 / Fan2:3480 / Fan3:3360
Machine 2=> Fan1:3120 / Fan2:3120 / Fan3:3240
Machine 3=> Fan1:3240 / Fan2:3420 / Fan3:3360
Machine 4=> Fan1:3240 / Fan2:3120 / Fan3:3240

I am using the original power supply.

Thank you for posting you power supply pictures.  Your unit is using a different power supply the our BTmine units, who manufactured yours and how is the quality?  Can you post more images of your Avalon clone.

Thank you

Hi back,
So for the factory i can only know the name in Chinese and the factory is located in Shenzhen.
(PM Me if interested and i will share the contact person if you want),
I am living in Hong Kong, so i went directly there to make sure it was legit and properly working (checked 4 factories before buying anything and found this one was much better than the other 3).
What kind of photos do you want to see ? Because honestly they all look the same pretty much. Just mine inside is extremely clean (all the cables are properly binded together, no missing screw, …) If you want anything specific let me know and i will try to take some photo for you.

So yes overall i am extremely happy with the quality.
I bought total 8 of them, and using actually only 4 of them for around a month now (because of power limitations in the warehouse i am running them).
So I just sold one machine 3days ago and shipped it already, and still have potentially 3 for sale (still hesitating to find a place to run them instead, but because of the noise and the power needed it's not that easy here in Hong Kong).

5 and 14 are slow, but still working.  They probably were not seated perfectly and when they were soldered a pin/connection was missed or they could be imperfect ships.  It should be stable as they are and not degrade more as long as you don't have any fuses go!

WELL this sucks.  I just got home to a dead unit that smells like it burnt itsself to a crisp!  Power supplies were CORSAIR TX750 units that run all my ANTMINERS.  Power draw was 900W last I tested (stock mhz).   I had not touched the config of the BTMINE unit (default software) besides setting the pool.  BOX WAS STILL RUNNING WITH NO FANS AND BURNT MY HAND TO THE TOUCH!  FIRE HAZARD!  Both power supplies power on and operate the tplink.

Box is cooling off now, took off the cover and will see what happened soon - modules too hot to touch still!   Sad

UPDATE - BOTH POWER SUPPLIES OPERATE JUST FINE when not connected to the BTMINE box.  Soon as I plug them in and turn it on with NO modules hooked up I get power for a couple seconds (fans spin up) then NOTHING.  Power supply protection circuit kicks in.  So looks like it has to be controller or power distribution board?  Still toying   Sad

For the record I've owned over a dozen Avalons and never had an issue.  This box yesterday for the first time dropped to 40GH for a bit (no reason) historically cgminer reported uptimes of about 3 days and about 2% HW errors... bummer!

GLWS they will all try to low ball..

eBay prices have dropped from $3K to $2K.  Forum prices have traditionally been half that.  With ANTMINERS being a much superior product and only $1200-ish, these Avalons with twice the power draw and high failure rate (even at stock speeds or less apparently) make these a LEMON  Sad

How much would be a reasonable and fair price for selling a 220GH/s (with a very stable PSU 1050W and overall great quality) ?
Thanks for your suggestions...

i would be ok to sell my extra 3 machines for 7btc shipping included.
Which is pretty much 1.6btc / machine + shipping from HK (in DHL or FEDEX in order to receive the machine in perfect conditions).
Wouldn't mind 1.6btc but for a local pickup ;-) and i doubt many of you are my neighbour unfortunately ;-)

PM or Reply here if anyone interested.

Cheers.

5 and 14 are slow, but still working.  They probably were not seated perfectly and when they were soldered a pin/connection was missed or they could be imperfect ships.  It should be stable as they are and not degrade more as long as you don't have any fuses go!

It's up to you Smiley
Daily average depends on pool's luck... it can be 0.07 Smiley

Another question... is this ok count 5 and count 14?
11 is dead, I know Smiley
