Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

Too much Thai spice...  If you risk building in chicken coop style you run the risk of fires. Was likely going to happen that is why DC's have fire suppression and climate controls and pdu's that are rated properly with cabling that is redundant safety-wise. Why it couldn't have happened in the BFL burn in rooms instead of this site is definitely proof Karma is a fickle bitch. Cutting corners gets this result in some cases. Sad to see it happen but... |

DC's will be thinking twice before allowing people to host this gear now, at least at unrealistic densities. Imports may receive greater scrutiny.
I'm not thinking twice about it. I bet the fire started in their electrical infrastructure -- transformer, distribution panel, etc -- not in a power supply or a miner. There's not much flammable material inside a miner. However, they may have installed a transformer near to a wood wall, then overloaded the transformer or wired it up without adequate fuse protection. The buildup was definitely not according to US electric codeWhen you were showing us this Data Center on September 5th did you have concerns about the wiring then? BTW I wouldn't expect them to be up to US electrical code since they aren't in the US, their local jurisdiction will have authority over this and their own standards. |

I hate to say it, but I'm not shocked at the outcome. To be fair, most of the farms in China aren't much better. Unfortunately this may not be the last we hear of this sort of thing happening I fear. Some would feel a certain Dat0rhall in Iceland would have been a more poeticly just location... But I somehow think that the arctic was a better choice than the equator and that they are more scrupulous about their wiring. |
