you forgot to mention the fw too Tongue

temps are important but many forget abt voltages required to push it higher.

yeah the s7's are finicky.

thx for the info, yeah during warranty period better to keep it stock, well even after warranty best to keep it low & cool. rather not push it too far.

Yeah well, i don't have much to say about the Firmware, stock seem fine, so changing would just be a waste and the few reports of people ignoring warning and flashing it, that did not brick their S7 anyways, reported 0 performance difference.

So it sound to me like there is no point in changing it, unless you want to take a shot at bricking your controller for 0 gain.

I will probably wait and see how much S7 are reported to break vs reported not to break after most people's warranty period is over, i suspect there will be more data.

Because honestly, i'm not going to be pushing my S7 before i think the risk is worth it and so far, with the data i seen, getting an extra 100gh/s at efficiency loss is not really that great.

You are referring to the ideapad series...

Could you explain why what the serie's code name change, if anything? I'm comparing screen size and individual components. Again;

GPU;
You = GTX 860m
Cheaper retail = GTX 960m

CPU;
You = Gen 4
Cheaper retail = Same level but Gen 6, which is generally 15% better per gen.

Screen size;
Same for cheaper (15 inch) or bigger for your asking price.(17inch)

Same keyboard, mostly the same components for ram, etc.

The only downside is the internal HDD, instead it only has a 256gb SSD. So this account for a 40$ difference. However a SSD is superior imo, but regardless.

And of course, better warranty with retail. Also unused, yours is used.
1243  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Avalon 6 Vs Antminer S7, which one you will choose? on: January 24, 2016, 11:41:23 PM
None of them. I rather wait for the next generation miners.
Looking at the difficulty i got no trust this machine will even get me my investment back, let alone make a profit.

But when the next batch arrive, the difficulty will raise again like it is now and you will see about the same profits as now. It will always be like this. The problem is probably your running costs and not the miner's efficiency.
1244  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S7 is available at bitmaintech.com with 4.86TH/s, 0.25J/GH on: January 24, 2016, 11:35:09 PM
wow very low rates ! awesome but of course those are at stock clocks. i'm wondering abt those oc'ed.

what is acceptable & what is not for hwe, yes many have their own opinions.

but of course best is to keep it low & cool heh.

HWE% does not really matter. If someone give you an "opinion" for that, then maybe you should stick to facts instead.

Its just an indicator, as long as your effective hashrate goes up at proper J/GH for each and every clock step, you are good to go. Of course assuming you keep the temps in the green zone.

1% Would mean you're wasting 1% of your shares, if you're getting an effective 3% speed boost per step, then there is no problem at all. Again, assuming you run it at proper temps. But 1% is probably far from what you can reach, at max overclock my S5's don't even reach 0.001% HWE which is fantastic. Thats effectively 0gh loss.

But the S7 seem more fragile than the S3/S5, so overclocking them during the warranty period seem like a risk not worth it. The lower quality design may see more failure when overclocked even at right temp for reason completely unrelated to chip performance and efficiency. (Which is what HWE% is)

Tbh the chip seem great, but the board build, not so much.

I'm sorry you are confused about the model we are talking here, my laptop its a Y50-70 ir a not an "old" series lol its still in warranty as I said and a complete different model from the y700 series....

http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/lenovo/y-series/y50/#specs

Wrong how? I am using the spec you listed and comparing them to what Lenovo and retailers currently sell (the newer gen is serie 700);

Versus the 700 serie, which has better, newer generation(Gen 6 CPU versus your Gen 4 and 960 GPU vs your 860 GPU) hardware, which is brand new and cheaper than what you are asking. For the price you are asking, you can get a 17 inch screen one, still with better specs.

Did you list the wrong specs? Because you clearly listed 4th gen i7 and GTX 860m GPU. While the one currently for sale, again, cheaper and brand new, has 6th gen a 960m gpu.
1246  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Discussion about the life time of hardware on: January 24, 2016, 11:13:11 PM
in morocco we cost 0.09$ per 100KW/H...it's cheap ou not ?

So 0.0009$ per kWh? Make sure you're not messing up the math and you're not missing other fees. But if thats the case then thats nearly free electricity.

0.09$/kWh is high but not unusual. 0.05$/kWh is very good. 0.02-0.03$/kWh is greatness and anything less would be hyper fantastic for mining.

post your errors guys & gals.

most of mine are no more than 0.001%

what's your highest & lowest ?

any difference between miner & pool side ?

I only have one S7. It is a B8;

Error wise it is rather clean.
1248  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Hot to make an asic miner from scratch using 16nm Finfet chips from TSMC? on: January 24, 2016, 11:02:50 PM
I will PM you a 30 minutes step by step instructions on how to built a miner from scratch using that chip. You will need some tie-wraps, a phillips screwdriver and an old VCR.
Can you send me the same PM?

Please forward it to me. I am of stance that the best construction material is duct tape. So maybe i could take your design and substitute tie-warps with duct tape.

But yeah. If you have to ask...
1249  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTB][Canada]Antminer S7, Antminer S7 Coupon, Avalon6, EVGA PSU on: January 24, 2016, 10:55:03 PM
Right now i am interested in picking up one unit, either one S7 or one A6, depending on batch/price etc. Feel free to PM me an offer @anyone.

Is there no one selling any S7 or A6, around market price, that is located in Canada?

I might be willing to pay a small extra for a high chip count S7 version/high efficiency version.

You are comparing to what model? Post a screenshot of the Lenovo site I'll do it when I get home..

As quoted prior, model Y700-15;

No less than 700 and the warranty its for the product regardless of the owner..

Good to know. Any upside from buying yours than to buy a brand new superior Lenovo Y700-15 for 800~900$ directly from Lenovo or Newegg?

Example site;
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=34-319-908

825$ for the 17inch screen with +2 +1 gen specs.

Example sale;
http://promotions.newegg.com/lenovo/15-5580/index.html?icid=335875

Goes as low as 625$ for better specs than your's with 15 inch screen. Albeit no HDD, an external one for 40$ would do the job.

Original website for the 700 serie;
http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/y700-series/y700-15-inch/

Your's i believe is the old 50 serie.
1251  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon6 safety or how I burnt my avalon6 on: January 24, 2016, 10:30:19 PM
Is there a particular thing to do, to get 3.2 to 3.4THs? I get wildly different temps and different hashrate and no where near 3.4THs. Is it a overvolt thing only? I'm on ATX psu but i usually get 12.1v at the ui;

I see "smartspeed" is on, not sure if i need to do manual tuning or something?

(shortened post quite a bit)

I am not sure  what your question is.  the screen shot above is showing 3.5th  is that you?

I think hes asking what causes the lower then 3.5 area, I'm guessing he has not experienced it.   The most common reason I would say is the PSU puts out less then 12.0 volts.

Not all PSU's are the same on putting out exactly 12 or 12.1 even.  I have some EVGA's that worked great for everything else but with A6's they tend to be 11.9-12 most of time.

Yes, sorry for being unclear, i'm wondering why the hashrate varies so much. For example, it look like the first unit, in the screenshot (yes that is me) can do 3550 to 3650 depending on uncertain factors. While some units does 3.2 to 3.4 and the GUI still report 11.9v to 12.0v.

I am under the impressing these prefer running hot? because generally unit #1 does 3650 and the second one does 3550. But i am not sure why such a varriance&difference in hashrate and also temps, they are each using a EVGA G2 1300w.

Now the real problem i have right now is, if i set the minimum fan speed to 60, it fix the issue of the fan going from 2.5k to 5k all the time (i find it insanely annoying). The fan does 3-3.2k all the time which is great. But if i do that unit #1 seem to run too cool(?) and lose 100 GH/s?

I'm just trying to ascertain what is going on and see if someone has a workaround. Maybe controlling the fan of each miner individually?
1252  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS][CANADA]2.9 AsicMiner Tubes -> Slowly dropping the price on: January 24, 2016, 10:24:13 PM
How much for the S5?

I just mentioned it to fish for some offers. If i get a good one, i might take it, otherwise i plan on mining with them for at least another solid month or 2. I'm not sure about swapping these for .3 hardware can be really worth it. They are still very profitable right now.
1253  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminee S3+ Asic Status X Problem on: January 24, 2016, 10:18:16 PM
Well, I'm not sure really how he got it all connected. He said that he has never overclocked the device and that it was running fine for a while, then after losing one fan, a few weeks later, the X's started appearing and after 3 days, both boards have all X's ever since  Huh

I typically deal with electronics so he asked me if I know what could have caused it. Now, I don't have one myself, so I don't know how often do these things die all of sudden? Are these ASIC chips very sensitive to voltage changes or anything  Embarrassed

I think your friend has waited a long time, letting it run when it had a problem, before requesting help. But if you can give us 0 information about what he did, is doing and did not do, we cannot give you any information to help either.

101 Troubleshooting is to power cycle it fully, see if it change anything. Then underclock it, then try a different PSU. Depending on what happen, we can possibly get an idea of what is going on with the Unit.

2 newer gen? Could you please check Lenovo site...http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/lenovo/y-series/y50/#specs

The same specs...

Quoting you;
Quote
- NVDIA GeForce GTX 860M Graphics 2GB

Versus Lenovo's;
Quote
NVIDIAŽ GTX 960M 4 GB GDDR5

And you;
Quote
4rd Gen Intel i7-4720HQ

Versus Lenovo's;
Quote
6th Generation IntelŽ Quad-Core i7 Processor
In this case the store has it equipped with a i7 6700HQ (2.60 GHz).

That is thus 1 generation newer for the GPU and 2 generations newer for the CPU, along with the other extra tidbits. And Your laptop is used, not brand new, afaik, it is not factory sealed?

You said;

Mine its brand new still under warranty and its 200$ less..but suit yourself, you can pay me in btc go pay btc @  Lenovo.com

Well i'm asking, because it did not sound like your laptop was still factory sealed, is it? And 200$ difference for 2 newer gen CPU and 1 newer gen GPU + little extra is pretty rad.

And 3 months warranty vs 3 years, hmm.

my brother i just want to know the approximate number to do some math,

and i have a question to you how long your hardware's works well without stop and no troubleshooting

please accept my stupid question and i hope to help

Thnk You Smiley

None of mine ever stopped so far. Its not possible for anyone to guess at what time, if ever, any of your miners would malfunction, they don't have an expiration date like most living organisms.

1258  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminee S3+ Asic Status X Problem on: January 24, 2016, 04:24:46 PM
A friend of mine has a problem with his Antminer S3+, apparently, one of his fans died. After a few weeks, he noticed some "X" on ASIC Status of his first board, then the next day all of his first board was full of "X" followed by the second board getting all "X". Now, I'm not sure exactly is there any overheating protection in the device or how it works.
So, do you think the board actually got completely fried and dead, or it is that the "overheating protection" jumps in and turns off the chips because the device can't be cooled properly with only one fan?

Would be very thankful for any info   Cheesy

The overheat protection, if its on the S3, would stop the hashboard from running, not kill the chips. And "cooled properly" what temps are the S3 at? I'm pretty sure the single fan should be able to keep it cool enough, although it would spin very fast/loud.

Did he power cycle his S3? Thats usually the first thing you do at any first sign of trouble.
1259  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Discussion about the life time of hardware on: January 24, 2016, 04:18:57 PM
what you mean (One thread's enough.) ?

S7 and Avalons 6 are being discussed in depth in several thread, some of which are dedicated to this. Also, asking how long the miner you will buy will last is like asking whats next week's winning lottery number is.

Anyways, take a look at the speculation section. But the miners could last 1 sec or its full mining life time. Avalon 6 has better build quality.
1260  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: S7 Batch 8 vs. Batch 9 on: January 24, 2016, 03:12:45 PM
Haven't bought any miners direct from Bitmain since the S3/S5 days and I don't seem to remember any such delays in fact I was nearly always generally very pleased with the turnaround times then again that was before they started adding these obnoxious disclaimers right in the Product titles like:

ANTMINER S7 BATCH 8 - Shipped out within 5 days with full payment
Speed:    4.73TH/S
Weight:    4.5 kg
Price:       2.51 BTC
               ( 996.47 USD )

Anybody opt for the $70 extra dollars in hopes that a Batch 8 premium price would buy a more expeditious turnaround in the order time like maybe even similar or close to the old days of the S2/S3/S5 days?

Is this a stupid question?

Thanks in advance  Wink

MikeC
PrincetonNJ

Maybe, i'd definitively go for Batch 9 at this point since we're already in the shipping range. I doubt the 70$ extra + extra taxes is worth it. Also the B9 was apparently slightly different from the B8. Someone said it had some different fan connector or something. So maybe its different under the hood as well.
