ASIC is not CPUs, it's not GPUs and it's not FPGAs.  It's the end of the line for mining technology for the foreseeable future.

This got me to thinking, aside from the obviously huge gains to be had from process shrink, do you suppose any of the current ASIC designs use memristor technology?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memristor

Maybe my understanding is insufficient, but is it not reasonable to think that more efficient circuits could be created with the availability of a "new" component type?

. .. ...I have a feeling we might be hearing from Nefario soon... .. .

Check the other thread mentioned a few posts up to see what Nef has to say, and why.

Bring your pitchforks.

if you do reach 1000 connections you will crash.

I would suggest that the client should normalize values in the config file that might cause it to crash to the nearest sane value (while noting it in the debug output or a logfile or something).
1664  Economy / Securities / Re: GLBSE Payment Claims (Announce your payment here) on: October 18, 2012, 06:37:38 PM
If I may, I suggest a table be built and maintained in OP something like:

Username \t BTC expected \t BTC received \t Transaction ID(s)
1665  Economy / Securities / Re: Where is everyone going to invest in LTC GPU mining bonds now? Options? on: October 18, 2012, 03:48:04 PM
Personally, I would rather do my own mining than buy "mining bonds".

Aside from the risk of having to trust the miner, and also trust the exchange if there is one involved, I enjoy building the hardware, figuring out the software, and seeing it do the work of mining.  Paying someone to mine for me takes a lot from it.

Thread derailment successful.
1667  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: High Efficiency FPGA & ASIC Bitcoin Mining Devices https://BTCFPGA.com on: October 17, 2012, 02:38:12 PM
I dunno about you, but I'd rather mine on a device for 3 years than 1 year and have to fork out more money to stave off obsolescence.  Not everyone can keep investing money year after year.  That's why power is the most important aspect of an ASIC device and it literally defines if the device is viable or stillborn.

Imo, who wins the power consumption race will win the ASIC race in the long term.

The difference between the Gh/$ and the Gh/W is the difference between short-term and long-term decisions (buying the device vs operating the device).

In the short term I'm interested in buying the device with the best Gh/$ so I can recoup the initial costs faster. But what happens after I get my money back in 6 months, 12 months, etc.? Do I still mine with it? That decision will be made on power consumption costs, in other words I will keep operating the device if electricity costs per Gh are below profits obtained from a Gh mined.

More than that, it's who continues to develop subsequent generations of the technology.

If these guys are smart, they're already working on designs for the next generation, using a smaller process size, as well as any other improvements they can manage.

Not that energy efficiency isn't nice to have.

As a customer, I feel that the power issue is a critical issue and I do not feel that it's unreasonable to expect an answer from Tom on the subject.

You've pre-ordered a bASIC?

I suppose it is unclear.  My bet statement includes the 13th, though CoinHoarder's does not.

Call it invalid?

Or we could make it fun and make a poll thread to decide.

Do not do it. there are too much fanatical BFL's followers Wink
before is before, before <13 not = <
It would be fair to cancel the bet because of unclear proof, and not sufficiently precise wording bet. But both sides must agree.

Yes, I said before the 13th. However, he said through the 13th.

So at the end of the day, whose statement do we go by? Or do both void each other out as the terms were not clear?

I'm not trying to get off on some technicality, but it was proven that the reflow machine was bought by BFL a day(ish) after we made out bet. So just because they didn't post pictures of it, I lose, even though we know they bought the machine? Pretty lame. But, in the end Bogart's wording may have saved me?

I'll agree to call it off if you will.

I guess in the future we should be more clear with bets.
1670  Other / Off-topic / Re: Why is Butterfly Labs so secretive? on: October 14, 2012, 10:55:08 PM
Is the die feature size something that can be easily checked on a production chip?

Could someone just open a chip's casing, look at the die with a microscope, and say "oh, that's 130nm", etc?

Or is this size below the limit of what's observable optically without being limited by diffraction, and would require a SEM or somesuch to "see"?

Maybe this thread should be for ppl to list their unpaid claims.

I got my BTC repaid yesterday, and today I received this in the claim email address about 30 minutes ago:

Quote
Your GLBSE account has been processed for bitcoin. The next step will be to send you information about your assets, and to provide this information to issuers (if you agreed) allowing you to continue your relationship with your issuers.

That's all the email said.

I didn't have any assets besides the BTC, so I don't expect to receive anything further.

Because they're in transit. The announcement was made after our purchase. Once the machines are fully installed, we'll be happy to flood you with photos and assembly videos

let's see

Let's see indeed.  If they were purchased on Wednesday the 3rd, they ought to be arriving around Monday the 8th if they ship from within the US.  I can't imagine BFL waiting for slow international shipping.  They are on a schedule after all.

I'll wager 5 BTC that no such photos show up any time next week (thru the 13th) that are not obvious fakes or highly questionable.  Certainly none that provide a solid assurance that BFL is in fact in possession of and operating or setting up these machines for operation.

(Post in the thread if you wanna take the other side of this wager.)

If Bogart wants to be semantic, he could argue that the picture of what appears to be the oven in the back of a truck doesn't meet the criteria of his bet. BFL announced that once the machines were fully installed they would provide photos and assembly videos. Bogart bet that BFL wouldn't provide photos that
1) BFL was in possession of the machines, and
2) Operating or setting up the machines for operation.

I'd  say 1) is satisfied, but 2) is questionable.

I wouldn't say Bogart won the bet, but I would say there's enough there that he could not pay without earning himself a scammer tag.

Hm...  Also if you want to argue semantics, CoinHoarder said:

To be clear, I am betting 5 BTC that BFL posts pictures of their new equipment before 10/13/2012.

Going by the post date on the blog, they were posted near the end of 10/13, not before 10/13.

What do you think CoinHoarder?

I didn't know Rarity was banned, but was glad to read it.

Every time I saw a Rarity post I knew it would be incendiary and would contribute no value to the discussion.

Good move banning him (her?).  It'll be less for me to wade through.

I just submitted an email address and payment address I'm assuming thats all that is needed? Huh

This is the screen you want to be seeing:

I think BFL appreciates the art of trolling.

Just look at how worked up they have y'all in here.

I accept your bet. Someone quote please.

Today is 10/13/2012. BFL has not posted any new equipment photos. Was explained that the first picture is not fake, but what about photo 2 and 3?
Bogart, just won 5BTC.
@CoinHoarder - I hope  you are an honorable man Smiley

Looks that way.

My signature address will be fine.

Better luck next time. Smiley
