I have been following this story the entire time. Another aspect of this story is the injun feller's military history.
At first he was supposedly a Vietnam Vet "Recon Ranger" but now some stolen valor guys have picked up on the story and set the record straight.
His military records show that he never served abroad, was only ever a private, was a refrigerator repairman, went AWOL 3 times, etc.

This is sounding to me like we are hypothetically talking about a proven scammer, not just alleged, and these funds were sent in the commission of a scam, and the contractor user did do the work but basically had to pull it due to finding out it was a scam.

Working for a project that turns out to be a scam, but this was caught in the very early stages and was immediately stopped.

So it should be a small amount of coin for a small amount of effort and only between the would-be scammer and the thread-maker-guy.

I can see doing BBcode work for someone but why would you post their thread for them and put your name on it? This was done before copper memberships were available to post pics and links but now that is solved.

I think it depends on some more things.
Was the payment solely for creating and maintaining this thread or were other funds included earmarked for any other service this person was supposed to provide or any escrow for any other possible payments?
Did anyone else get scammed or lose money or their effort over it?
How much for the service already rendered and how much is the remainder/overage? Is it substantial?

Who busted the scam?
Maybe instead of giving all of the money to charity you could give it to the scam buster, or a good chunk of it, as a reward.. Maybe put some of it up as a public bounty to bust more scam ICOs?
Reward and incentivize the good samaritans stopping these scammers..

What are the advantages of a seastead platform over a boat? Is it registration laws?

I have been thinking using a sailboat to travel and live cheaply so I am already interested in being on the ocean but moreso to see interesting places and live happily on a relatively small budget, escape the rat race, than for the purpose of escaping laws. Actually traveling in a sailboat would be inflicting myself to all sorts of terrible laws depending on where I was visiting at the time.

I am behind the idealism of being sovereign but I don't think it would be worth it for me to have to live on a tiny space way out in the water. I think it would get very boring..

Their doesn't seem to be as much of a frenzy over this hackening as their was for Cryptsy.
It's almost like we are desensitized to exchange hacks by now having been around for so many of them..

I'm hoping for the best in this situation obviously but by now people should know not to store significant amounts in exchanges because their are so many ways things can go bad doing that.
Maybe one of the reasons their isn't that much of a commotion over this is that people know they should be in control of their own keys and know they partially have themselves to blame full well by now, and they are not surprised.

Cryptopia was just hacked and many major crypto news publications are running stories including suspicions of an inside job..

Their main reps here are now on DT1 so I guess we will see how that goes..

I suggest they do not use their DT powers in any relation to this event, to tag "fudders" or whatever, and we should watch to make sure noone is intimidated about speaking about the situation..

Can you not mix these types of coins or is the hacker that stupid?
If the exchanged are notified in time, and they care, can't they freeze the accounts and possibly recover some of the lost funds?
