2581  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Will btc difficulty go sideways for rest of the year? on: November 13, 2018, 02:48:47 PM
The retarget happens just after the fork, probably Friday night (European time)

The next retarget period will be a decent indication of how much hashrate was just mining BCH to build up a bag before the fork, just with the timing to see who comes back to BTC right away. A lot of Hash will stay there from the parties with loads of power and competing interests.

I was wondering do we have a decent idea right now of how much of the spikes and valleys on the hashrate charts is the combined variance of miners. Right now it's hard to figure with large amounts of hash shifting with the BCH fork.

I was watching a convo somewhere about someone speculating on their theory about Diff rising. It led me to something that I hadn't thought about with Diff. The effects corm with a pretty significant lag factor. When things start to go good or drive up interest to put more hashpower online, it could take a month maybe more for the Diff to react and increase, the same can be said about the decline. This person was talking about the rises that had been going on for a 6 month period this year. When I started to look at it, those were just the lingering increases from the Fomo late last year and the subsequent cooling period where miners where still flying off the shelves into January.

Then here we are where Diff has been essentially stale feeling no pull in one direction or another. Now a few months from now I think we are going to see the pull upward from the New gear which is 1 of the 2 factors I thought would cause a move.

That was the first time I was home and looking at my miners during network issues.

Panicked like a rookie because I just moved my 741's inside, and have been testing their stability while heating the basement. I assumed I had some random temperature spike, but after 10 minutes of staring after the reboot I checked the support channels. Good old facepalm.

I did catch it and reset before I wound up going solo.
2583  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Pangolinminer demanding extra payments for delayed Whatsminer D1 shipments on: November 13, 2018, 02:27:00 PM
Hello Forum Reader,

I just received this email from Pangolin. Keep in mind that I ordered my D1 2 months ago and was told it would be shipped Nov. 20. The lost mining time alone is far more than the $350 they are extorting from me and the value of the miner has decreased INCREDIBLY due to the release of the Antminer DR3. This company is following the worst practices a company can. Stay away from their products as they cannot deliver what they promise.

[...]

Seriously. That's insane. Summed it up below.

Hey

Look, So I'm gonna be about a month late but I'm better than I was supposed to be; but instead of giving these improvements to people who went out on a limb and pre-ordered from us we think you should pay more for these improvements.

Thanks don't forget to GFY.

It's shitty to say the least, but the audacity to force an additional payment or take 90% of your original order is top level shit service. I'd cancel my order in a heartbeat over crap like that. I could see charging for all additional batches moving forward, but would consider it a gift to those that pre-orded. It may have finally shed a positive to pre-orders - it may be better than what you bought.
2584  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Rig hosting farms? Building your own mine is dumb on: November 13, 2018, 02:18:54 PM
Building your own facility from scratch is definitely not an easy thing. It takes a lot of planning, backing and time. I suspect most people have a major issue with the time aspect and making proper arrangments with the utility company for initial start-up.

After that though it all comes down to filling the space, and having a long term deal in place with the community and the utility company. This is what unfortunately is killing hosting sites and some larger scale farms in North America. The community changes the zoning laws - sometimes in a targeted plan; or the electricity costs your business model is built on go up by 40%. These are the real nail in the coffin, for those facilities.

It's no different with the facility you are at, hopefully they've secured a long term solid plan.
2585  Other / Meta / Re: Community generated suggestions to improve the forum (+ eventual voting on them) on: November 12, 2018, 11:33:00 PM
Not sure if this is a thread destined for obscurity but this is the best place for this.

I'd like to see some locked threads created and maintained by theymos regarding for a couple of different topics. My best example at the moment is for merit.

The [ANN] thread was great for the announcement and rollout as well as for community involvement. What would have been beneficial and still could be is a maintained thread that spells out changes or facts maintained by theymos. This threads sole purpose would be to serve as a collection of facts and changes for all members to see and access easily.

Examples -  The jr. member restriction - the updated number of merit sources - The statement about not tagging suspected merit abusers.

As it is now members either need to search for and find the statements being made to answer questions or refresh their memory. This would also be beneficial as the chance of a quote being edited is removed.

In addition to this Rules posted on all boards by theymos, this would make sense coming from the top.

This would be a revised version of the rules. Considering a large portion of the unofficial rules are obtained from theymos quotes; why not go right to the source. The below quote was my inspiration for this ( I seem to recall it originally being saying "I am the Law"... maybe my mind filled that in on it's own.

I think this decision does not fit the rule of law.

2586  Bitcoin / Mining / The winter mining setup on: November 12, 2018, 08:23:36 PM
Winter is here time to make miners profitable again. Now this only works if you realize 2 things.

1) The heat your miner puts into your home is heat you no longer need to supply.
2) The cost of electricity for your miner, is now neutral (Assuming you use electrical heating) or nearly neutral depending on your utility costs.

This opens up a world of possibilities especially with mining rewards/coin prices being stagnant and on the lower side. Any old piece of gear you have kicking around is now instantly profitable for a few months out of the year, I myself am looking at at least 5 months.

Now there are considerations to make such as noise and dissipating the heat. I'm again lucky in that regard, I'm using 4 Avalon 741's and they are workhorses as far as I'm concerned. They are in my basement which is a fairly open space with a footprint of about 500 sqft with stone foundation walls - Talk about clashing times. The basement isn't used for much more than laundry storage and the utilities. So my main concern was the sound at first, especially when the miners first fired up and ramped the fans to 100%.

My story ended easily, I have the controller set to -2 on the voltage offset. The miner temps are 29/86 and 56% fan speed, so far about 24 hours in. I haven't measured the sound but it's quieter than my dryer or furnace when they are running and is more of a gentle hum. Mind you I have an extremely old home with very poor insulation so I could hear my garage set up more clearly as it vented in the direction of my home windows.

Here are some Photos, the insulation was bought for a similar build I never got around to and suited this set up well. I had this rack sitting around and was able to separate it into 2. The "walls" are 2 fold, I wanted to try and damper some sound turns out that is not necessary, but I have a kitten who I'm positive would do something stupid with the irresistible amount of cables/connectors/lights.

2587  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Rumor that Bitmain is going belly up! can't pay its chip builder! on: November 12, 2018, 04:58:09 PM
I still don't believe a word of it, but do you think one batch of sales would turn around a company that had long standing problems? Plenty of companies turn over a lot yet still fly down the toilet. Even if they're selling a mountain of stuff, vastly more money could be flying out the door via other means.

BCH is their unknown millstone. I cannae believe a supposedly hard nosed operation would place such an irrational bet.

I do, to the extent of their BTC/BCH mining and hardware business.

Mostly because I don't think things were if at all bad, anywhere near what was being "reported". I had forgotten about the whole BCH fork which with it adds another dynamic for discrediting Bitmain. That would be in the interest of whoever is backing the opposite side of the BCH coin.

I have no idea how much money they are hemorrhaging fighting the coin battle or with their AI programs.  What I do know is they have a ton of hardware hashing away for them, that's money all day. Their new flagship model is proving to be a sellout product and will continue to do so until other manufacturers start shipping product. Until then this is in hand within 3 weeks, so people will keep lining up and throwing cash/BTC/BCH at them.

So while one batch doesn't bring them out of (an unproven and likely untrue) financial ruin, they can stick to the same gameplan they did pre-2017 spike to continue raking in massive gains.
2588  Other / Meta / Re: Encouraging users to lock threads on: November 09, 2018, 09:16:50 PM
This can be really helpful for some sections like Bitcoin Discussions. Other like Marketplace can have different restrictions.

BD was my first thought because I can think of a few users who post a link half a entrance of garbage and then promote their website/blog/guaranteed money maker.

While reporting them is working, they still survive long enough to be found and reported, then wait to be moderated.

I dont know that j would lift the restriction for the entire marketplace, just because it is one of the worst sections for this, due to the scammy nature of many young accounts there.

That would lead to a flood of posts in the meta board by users asking 'Why was my topic locked?'

I still think all changes that affect a large number if registered users should be communicated via PM. A form letter is easy to generate and most if not all users will check their PM's; also makes it easy to answer the inevitable special few. Or better yet a pop up upon logging in.

There are lots of existing spam mega threads to last a while, will they automatically be locked?

I have long felt an essential archiving and locking of the section may be a benefit. Ideally after a new moderator has also been assigned to the section. This way any OP who feels there thread wasn't a cesspool of Sig spam, could appeal to have it revived.

And considering meta board is for forum related discussion, it should be exempted, also the Reputation board.

Agreed
2589  Other / Meta / Re: Why were my threads moved? on: November 09, 2018, 08:55:23 PM
Kind of surprised that this hasn't received any further attention or any action in defining the moderation of the topics.

For what it's worth I did send a PM to a single moderator regarding this.

I guess it's harder to get answers when you come in like a reasonable adult and dont go full nuclear.
2590  Other / Meta / Re: Encouraging users to lock threads on: November 09, 2018, 08:50:03 PM
I could see this being beneficial if it was a rank specific thing.  Much like posting restrictions.

Brand new gets 1, newbie can have 3, and jr.member could have 5. After that you could lift the restrictions.

It could work like a revolving system if one topic is locked then they've freed up some space for another.

Most accounts never really create a decent topic anyways, but there are several members who have many useful topics on the go at once, and I dont think they should be limited.
2591  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: S9j unit says S9i in System Overview - incorrect firmware flash? on: November 09, 2018, 08:42:06 PM
I would say the bigger takeaway is if this miner works properly as is just leave it.

Is there a chance that the person you bought them through just messed up a model number?
2592  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Innosilicon Terminator 3 on: November 09, 2018, 08:17:43 PM
I wonder if they were all geared up to announce and then the s15 best them in some regard.

Innosilicon announces the preorder of revolutionary INNOSILICON Terminator 3, the most anticipated next gen BTC miner is coming soon!

These are bold claims; despite being generic and not actually stating best or most efficient. I like to think that these companies pay attention to their competitors and change gears in response to the market and their competitors; but who can say. Most still tend to sell out of gear with little to no effort required beyond having competitive gear.
2593  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Rig hosting farms? Building your own mine is dumb on: November 09, 2018, 02:43:06 PM
You're no innovator. People have figured that shit out it's called hosting or colocation.

Glad it's working out for you and your gear. Some people have cheap enough power that they can successfully run all the machines they can afford at home or their business. Tough to do when you are talking about 2000 miners.

Some people really enjoy the hands on the maintenance and the troubleshooting from hosting there own miners. Then there's the people who can afford 2000 miners and a facility and decide to make a business of it with their sub 5 cent electricity, and offer hosting.

Everyone has different motivations and plans. Glad you found something that suits you and is working out.
2594  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Crypto oasis in California on: November 09, 2018, 01:27:17 PM
It depends on whether or not the governor wants to promote BTC within his agenda.

He could easily fund a public education program regarding crypto.

Given enough time and the drive to do so they could eventually at the state level accept BTC. It could start with accepting BTC for any state level licensing. They could create a secure platform where municipalities could begin to accept payments in BTC.

The options really are limitless, it just takes vision and again the desire to make this a cornerstone of their time in office.
2595  Economy / Reputation / Re: tomatocage as escrow and John Smith my token buyer on: November 09, 2018, 11:50:49 AM
Couple things -

If you check Tomatocage's Sig space, it states the Escrow service is Temporarily closed.

I don't see anywhere that you have any legitimate correspondances from them, I also don't see the ones from "John Smith" (The irony is killing me)

The best thing you can do when in doubt, is request that the Escrow agent Sign a message from their staked BTC address, this is usually posted in their Escrow thread, or would be staked somewhere on the forum.

You made a good call in stopping as soon as things felt iffy. There are a lot of scams out there and as people have pointed out there are ways of cheating email addresses and other messages. They can't cheat a signed message from a staked BTC address. As long as it is quoted or archived elsewhere to prevent it having been tampered with in the case of a hacked or sold account.
2596  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: New used batch of S9 13.5T and PSU - not working - how to test PSUs? on: November 09, 2018, 06:53:18 AM
Just want to get everything straight here.

Do you have 3 PSU's and 3 Miners?

The temperature you state of 9-10 Celsius is fine. I've never had an issue at those temps, closer to 0 I've had to warm them up a little. I'd say the output voltage from the PSU's seems fine as well. We still need to know what the PSU Specs are to be sure you have the proper input voltage and that it has the proper capacity.

One thing you could do assuming your providing enough power is swapping around the combination of PSU's and Miners to see if the problem follows the PSU. You can also take note of which chains/board(s) are not hashing - Swap the Connectors around and again see if the problem follows the connectors or stays on the same chains/board(s).
2597  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Rumor that Bitmain is going belly up! can't pay its chip builder! on: November 09, 2018, 03:31:59 AM
Considering the S15 batch shows sold out on day 1 for everyone outside China, I'm going to guess that even if they were legitimately having issues they now have it covered.

Now the interesting tinfoil hat moment I had when thinking about the timing of it all. Suppose they did hit some hard times. They've been mining these for a while on there end hoping for an increase in coin prices - whichever one is more beneficial to them. That didn't happen, money got tight, easy decision to decide it's time to sell to the masses.

I still think it was more of a PR stunt. Big old doom and gloom, news, followed by a new product launch and flagship product sellout. Easy way to create a nice positive buzz for that IPO they're launching.
2598  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Bitcoin Mining Pool: http://atom.otherb.com (0 tx fee) 1 BTC block finder reward on: November 09, 2018, 02:28:34 AM
Get it, Got it, GOOD

A small suggestion, work on your "business demeanor" if you intend to attract users to your pool. For 1 you are not an established member or personality within the BTC environment from what I can tell. You show up with a new pool, which can be a great thing as competition is healthy. Unfortunately you are doing a piss poor job of explaining your business model, and are lashing out because of it.

I do not make a habit of following peoples links so your OP should have been filled with more information, in a way that there would only be a few questions, the rest of the replies would be criticisms or compliments if done correctly.

So to clarify:

A mined block currently has 12.5 BTC, plus the Miner Rewards which are the transaction fees for all transactions processed. This is what Riffleman is referring to when he mentions your pool plans on keeping transaction fees.

Your 1 BTC block finder bonus, really isn't that. You are taking 8% of the pools total reward and giving it to the block finder. So the pool isn't providing a bonus it is reducing rewards from the other miners to reward the block finder. To properly be a bonus this should be your 1 btc being put up as a reward. There are pools that currently do this.

What you are referring to is that you have no withdrawal fees for removing mined rewards. And that you have no pool fees for miners. Both are good things in a pool, but most people feel a pool charging a small fee makes sense as they need to keep the infrastructure operational.

Your plan and setup is more reminiscent of some of the altcoin pools I've seen.

People are going to be skeptical of any new pool that seems to good to be true, because on the off chance this small pool finds a block, they need to trust you will pay out the rewards.
2599  Other / Meta / Re: Why were my threads moved? on: November 08, 2018, 07:54:22 AM
Can we either move my threads back or have a uniform moderation policy, please?

First off don't think I've had the opportunity to say thanks. I read and reread your S4+ and S5 threads multiple times as that's what I started out with last year. (Fanboying over lol)

I do agree with you that they should all be in the same place. For instance I see that you have an S9 review that was moved, but the review created by Hagss is still in the Hardware section. Not sure if you've tried or felt like using the "report to moderator" button to have other review guides moved to have a uniform policy put in place. The reasoning behind the report could be that your were moved and this would be inline with prior moderation.

If I were to offer an opinion, I feel that all review/guides would all be suited to the mining support board. Mostly because they also serve as a guide for the particular hardware. This also allows for a stream of support Q&A's to post in the thread.

They’re overmoderating the entire section and theymos has too much on his plate to try to resolve it.

As per the “new” rules you’re only allowed one thread on one miner in the mining hardware sub board (even though there was no spam the old way, they still changed the rules).

I would disagree about the overmoderating. There has been a change, but the boards are becoming much cleaner and an easier read to real information from what I've seen.

Unless there is something drastically different, why would 1 piece of gear need more than 1 topic in the hardware section. That would be where you would discuss that particular miner.

Now mining support is different. This is where I could see an individual miner having multiple threads based on the different situation, ideas/improvements or general use of the gear. In addition to that you could also have several Review/Guide threads. I say this because it doesn't hurt to have a few people making unique reviews of gear.
2600  Other / Meta / Re: For security, your account has been locked @Cyrus on: November 08, 2018, 05:36:45 AM
Did you by chance buy the account?

It sounds like when the email was changed, the security email would have been sent to the original email address.

Now whoever has control of that email could have selected that theh dis not change the email address associated with the btct account. Resulting in a locked account that cannot be logged into.

Edit: your edit just made sense to me. Just wondering now who the random person with access to the previous email would have been? Seems strange.
