743  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Importing a wallet to bitcoin qt on: February 15, 2014, 10:32:26 AM
I have a public and private key written down.  If i want to import that to bitcoin qt, do i simply go to addresses->New address, and then type in the public key?

Nope, you need the private key instead.
Click Help -> Debug window -> Console, and enter importprivkey <bitcoinprivkey>

Alternatively, if I want to create a new wallet, do I go to receive->new addresses and then create one there?

If you want to create a new receiving address, yes.
If you want to create a new wallet, close you bitcoin-qt, rename your wallet.dat to something else, and then open your bitcoin-qt again.

If I want to send from that address, do I simply then copy that address and then go to addresses and then new address and copy and paste that new address into the address box?

Nope, the address tab is for you to store the addresses you have sent bitcoin to (such as a gambling site or an exchange).

745  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Three simple questions on: February 15, 2014, 10:19:57 AM
1) What exactly is 'activity' on the board. I thought it was number of posts but mine has been stuck now at 98 for a few days.. hasn't moved at all although I've been posting a lot.

2) How do I turn off my email as a contact method. I chose 'hide email' in preferences but it still shows up under my avatar between 'view profile' and 'PM.'

3) How do I get to upload a picture for my avatar? Is this based on 'activity' or is it donation-based?

Maybe the 98 activity needs to be reclassified into the newbie group?

Don't say that please Cheesy

Ooops, sorry, I didn't notice yours lol  Grin

Well, you're also at about the same activity... and so am I.  Tongue

lol, this is so hilarious.. Smiley
Oh wait, I have 98 activity as well Tongue
746  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How do I insert an image into my post? on: February 15, 2014, 10:18:14 AM
You should have minimum 10 posts i think so

That requirement is for links in the sig only.  Smiley
747  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Hello from CoinedUp.com on: February 15, 2014, 10:14:34 AM

748  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is it too late to mine Bitcoin ? on: February 15, 2014, 10:10:35 AM
As you can see, the difficulty of mining has increased out of the normal users hands for BTC.  There are many alternative coins that you can mine now with GPU's and trade them for BTC.

But, setting up GPU and everything how much is that? I dont have like $3,000 like some people are selling their rigs for..

You know where I can find, used GPU`s? besides ebay..

What is your budget?  Huh
You can find some GPUs (both new and used) here. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=75.0
749  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is it too late to mine Bitcoin ? on: February 15, 2014, 10:05:55 AM
the mining difficulty keeps increasing?

Bitcoin difficulty adjusts itself every 2016 blocks, based on the total time taken to find the previous 2016 blocks.
The difficulty will keep increasing with more and more ASICs coming out to the market.
750  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newb Here with some questions :) on: February 15, 2014, 09:57:12 AM
Use offline wallet / paper wallet for safety.
Use Multibit, Electrum or bc.i if you want a easy-to-use wallet.

753  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Mining Contracts - Legit or Bogus? A Brief Analysis on: February 15, 2014, 09:42:25 AM
Minerlease is a scam. James Bregar, Minerlease CEO does not reply to emails, but promises to send back 80% of the BTC invested in a contract.
Needless to say, he fails to do so. Apart from the fact that I was not aware of the 20% reduction in BTC invested, he gives zero procent back.
I have all the documents and mails to prove my statement. I will inform Bitpay about this affair and will probably send this info to the police in my country. It's a lot of hassle, but I do want to inform the people here that Minerlease is a fraud.
The above said about minerlease has to do with the fact that James Bregar apparently didn''t get the equipment from Butterflylabs. He then informs his clients that they can get back 80% of their invested BTC if they, within 3 days, send the information necessary to him to send the BTC back to the customer. He promises to send the BTC back within 24 hours. SInce more than 50 hours have passed and I have have sent a couple of mails to him, nothing has passed. Not a single mail to explain why he can't send the BTC back.

Thanks for the heads up.
Good luck to you Smiley
754  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: buy bitcoin using paypal? on: February 15, 2014, 09:37:36 AM
I have tried to buy on ebay many times - all sellers scammed. Lost over 3k eur on them.

Did you not just claim back off Paypal?

They ripped me off because of trading with bitcoins.

Didn't you file a dispute?  Huh
755  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: is it too late to get involved on: February 15, 2014, 09:11:02 AM
I probably isn't worth trying to mine BTC now - actually buying Bitcoin is likely to offer a lot better return on investment  Smiley

If it isn't, then who mines the rest coins?
I've understood there is still some.

Some don't understand the affect of difficulty on profitabilty.
Some mine for fun and to support the bitcoin network.

Some just want to earn money, some want the BitCoin Currency to be accepted as a currency.

this bitcoin crash means that some dont want to accept as a curency. ?
or they'r against virtual moneys?  or just against bitcoin, it has some bad features, wastes electricty.

The bitcoin price "crashed" because of the dying mtgox, and people panic-sold their bitcoin with no idea what "transaction malleability" really is. Smiley
756  Other / Archival / Re: I sold everything at $158/159 this morning on: February 15, 2014, 08:55:20 AM
To all of you panic buying because you missed the "greatest thing ever", mark this post, within 6 months you will be able to buy in much lower, I have a large buy order at $35 (just above the 2011 high).

if this were an established commodity like gold, copper, soybeans, or a currency cross, which I have been trading for 15 years, that is the smart buy point - not at $159

you just need to look at the naivete of the posts on this board to know this is a sucker rally.

"i'm loaning money to ....."
" I save $200 a month and im putting it all in bitcoins ...... "
"we are revolutionaries......."

good luck to all the future bitcoin millionaires :-)

This was your original post, I saved it for my own reference. it will be a year soon ...

I sold all my Bitcoin at $120 and set a buy order at $0.03  See you in a year, suckers

Internet doesn't forget  Grin Grin Grin

In case you want to know how OP feels now, you can find it here. Cheesy

because literally EVERYTHING related to bitcoin is a scam.

I cashed out of bitcoin and I am literally done, I will not buy back in at any price.

Physical metals are the best alternative currency, not cryptogarbage.

757  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Will the bitcoin reach $10000 one day...? on: February 15, 2014, 08:48:51 AM
Probably within 5 years, but not anytime soon (i.e. next 2-3 years).

Agree.
Though I have full faith in bitcoin, I don't think it can go further 20x in one or two years...
758  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Complete Novice Help! on: February 15, 2014, 08:39:51 AM
You can buy bitcoins easily at Coinbase (link your bank account to them)

For Coinbase, it is definitely a good choice for US people, but not for others.

Can I verify my identity as a non-US resident?
Last Updated: Dec 31, 2013 08:47PM PST

At this point in time we can only support U.S. based customers. This means that any persons residing outside of the U.S. will not be able to complete the identity verification. We hope to add support for non-U.S. customers in the near future and appreciate your understanding.
Please remember that anyone can use our web-based bitcoin wallet without completing ID verification. We offer the ability to receive and store bitcoin, secure your funds with 2-factor, create recurring payments, manage paper wallets, and send bitcoin to email addresses. As always, there is no charge to receive, store, or send bitcoin. Coinbase will even pay the miner fees when sending bitcoin out of your account!
759  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: "The last posting from your IP was less than 360 seconds ago..." on: February 15, 2014, 08:35:28 AM
I have this problem trying to send a PM to the Middlecoin owner.  I joined to send him/her a msg because the contact link goes to a profile on this site.  But every time I try, I get:

"The last posting from your IP was less than 360 seconds ago. Please try again later."
How does one get a message to him/her?

After logging in your account, wait for 360 seconds before sending your PM.
760  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 6 min post limitation on: February 15, 2014, 08:33:43 AM
It gets better once you're a junior member.

The time limit is based on your activity level, rather than membergroup.
Once you reach 15 activity, the time limit would be already down to 75 seconds.
For details, you may refer to my above post.
