781  Other / Politics & Society / Re: U.S. suspends export of sensitive tech to Hong Kong. on: July 02, 2020, 06:12:27 AM
The United States government began measures today to end its special status with Hong Kong, one month after Secretary of State Michael Pompeo told Congress that Hong Kong should no longer be considered autonomous from China. The new actions include suspending export license exceptions for sensitive U.S. technology and ending the export of defense equipment to Hong Kong. Both the Commerce and State Departments also said further restrictions are being evaluated.

Just to preface: I know that you're totally contributing to P&S with all of these posts, though I would just like to say that I hope you do (in the future) begin to eleborate more in your posts about what you want to talk about with the members here. There's totally nothing wrong with what you're doing, it is just going to look a bit spammy if you continue to just post links to articles and not say that much regarding the article itself.

But on the topic:

Not sure why the US had been exporting defense equipment to HK for all of this time. I do understand the trade of semiconductors and things along those lines though. But all of this is going to change (rightfully) as China is on their quest to take control of HK one step at a time. They don't do it so fast to the point where everyone is freaking out, but just fast enough where they're able to get away with it.

Plus we're in the middle of COVID so people are focused on something else while China imposes its will on HK. Horrible to see, hope the US continues to do more to stop this.

I don't know why are you just saying like that. I am just sharing the news. And when I determine that this post should be shared then I take a part in this forum.

@gmjutt6 I’m not sure of your other posts, but this one seemed decent as the relevant information that was needed about this topic was there in the op.

@squatz1 may have referred to your others posts which I haven’t seen, but in any case if anyone feels a post doesn’t belong here, then one should use the report button and let mods take the final call.

Also coming back to the topic US had already announced this decision one month ago, and in my personal opinion it makes sense now as Hong Kong cannot be considered autonomous from China anymore, and hopefully this decision will force China to back down, and restore Hong Kong autonomous status like it was agreed in 1997.

Sources:

...

Obviously I know that I can use the report button Juggy, but I think it'd be more effective to just let the person know on this thread rather then to wait weeks for someone from the moderation team to take action (not a jab at the mod team at all) -- More effective this way.

But onto the topic - HK isn't autonomous at all anymore. China has been slowly taking away the independence of the nation and just incorporating it as another part of the Chinese authoritarian / dictatorship machine. Sad to see.

People are still protesting over there (most recently regarding this new law) but the media really doesn't give it any attention. Can't really blame them though, people are much more interested in our own protests and the coronavirus.
782  Other / Politics & Society / Re: EU air safety agency suspends PIA to operate in Europe for 6 month on: July 02, 2020, 06:05:33 AM
To clarify I said "if" I don't want that to be taken as some sort of attack or something...

It's happy where it is but I thought the non certified pilot thing has been a problem for a while (I could be mistaken it could be somewhere else) . And if it has this is potentially a delayed reaction from Europe (I don't think waiting for a pilot to crash a plane is the best course of action) and they're still allowed to fly past/over Europe...

I'd have to say that I don't think that was some sort of attack, just you pointing something out. Happens sometimes on this section as its hard to blur the lines b/w the two sections, not an issue at all.

Yeah -- it's a good look that they are finally cracking down on it now, but we all do still know that they've turned a blind eye for sometime. Depends on when they were able to compile evidence and determine if allegations of non certified pilots were credible.

.....

Dude , I don't normally complain about folks never being able to differentiate between "lose" and "loose" on these boards as it seems useless.
But seeing how its in the thread title you may want to fix it, just sayin....

Re: Trump to lose popular vote and the elections - Election Model predicts. <----FTFY

Pretty common online for some reason, unsure on why don't see this difference pretty quickly. Loose and lose just sound so different as well.

But in regards to Trump: I personally think that the Trump will lose the popular vote again, unsure on the margin, but I do think that he will win the EC by a closer margin then the 2016 Clinton win.

That's just my guess, and this far out even polls are as close to my guesses (and all of ours)
784  Other / Politics & Society / Re: India bans 59 mostly Chinese apps amid border crisis on: July 01, 2020, 08:16:59 PM
India cares about a geopolitical issue and they're trying to put pressure on China. Once all of this is resolved all of these apps will be welcomed back into Indian phone app stores with open arms.
Indian intelligence claims that political leaders and military officers are under surveillance of Chinese governments and these apps helps their smartphone to work as transmitter. Not sure how much this actually true but we all knows about China and their untrustworthy activities on many occasions.

Some of this applications are almost everywhere in the world and imo China may not mind if India bans them in their country.
They care lot about Indian users because India has 140 million population and tiktok claims that 30% of their users are from India alone so Chinese government is making lot of profits from the Indian users and one thing I want to mention Tiktok is planning to invest 1 Billion USD in India alone for the development activities.

Ah, I see the whole political leaders and military officers angel which really could be a national security risk. I'm pretty sure that the US has started to ban servicemen(and women) from using certain apps on their work / personal devices that are on bases. There was a whole scandal regarding one military app that showed people where secret US military bases were -- and this was public information that was totally not meant to spy on people (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/jan/28/fitness-tracking-app-gives-away-location-of-secret-us-army-bases#:~:text=Fitness%20tracking%20app%20Strava%20gives%20away%20location%20of%20secret%20US%20army%20bases,-This%20article%20is&text=Sensitive%20information%20about%20the%20location,by%20a%20fitness%20tracking%20company.)

But yeah, this is about money when it comes to the 30% of their users being Indian. Large amount of money to be made there in ads.
785  Other / Politics & Society / Re: India bans 59 mostly Chinese apps amid border crisis on: July 01, 2020, 06:03:21 PM
Can we talk about the fact that countries are only going to flex the fact that they 'care' about their citizens privacy when there is some sort of geopolitical issue going on? They're not doing this to protect their people from China spying on them, they're doing this to put pressure on Chinas economy in a market which is booming (India)
Geopolitical issue is the main reason for India to ban these apps but not to decrease their income just to save their country from spying.Indian intelligence reported that China is spying on the government officials locations and their chats with the help of these apps so they banned it.

But those apps will be working soon in my opinion because Tiktok tweeted that they were invited by Indian government to explain their data tracking procedure means if everything is clear then apps will be back.

But that's not what they're caring about, they really don't care if China is spying on their people. Just like the US doesn't care about their people in regards to privacy. TikTok (and other Chinese apps) are all booming in the US.

India cares about a geopolitical issue and they're trying to put pressure on China. Once all of this is resolved all of these apps will be welcomed back into Indian phone app stores with open arms.

Countries really don't care about this sort of thing b/c they know it's the norm. Only when they think they can get something out of it will they show that they care. Leaders are going to look really good right now even if its all theater.
786  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone... What are your thoughts on it? on: July 01, 2020, 05:58:06 PM
I wouldn't go as far to say that this is a marxist disease or that all of this is a conspiracy or something along those lines.

Though I do think all of us do notice that there is a major problem with telling people to social distance, wear masks, not be in large groups, and then allow protesting to go on without mass arresting people who are obviously violating the guidelines set forth by the federal / state governments.

Doesn't really make local businesses that happy when they're already in a rough financial situation that they're not allowed to reopen because of coronavirus, but protesters can continue doing their thing.

Nobody really knows how to contain this covid-19 mess in a way that's practical, so people with authority resort to thinking up guidelines themselves, you can see different states have wildly different social distancing rules and this is the result of mayors and governors and other people in charge having different opinions on what's best for the community.

One thing's for sure, people won't heed a prohibition of gathering in large groups, even if that was enforced by mass arresting, because it will simply make them more angry and resentful. More anger escalates violence.

Maybe local businesses are fined consistently for breaking quarantine rules, though it certainly looks like individual people aren't fined consistently. And if that's the case then it really sucks to be in their position but it does tell us that governors are handling businesses properly.

Back to lurking now  Smiley

Oh yeah, you're totally right on no one really having the 'right' answer on what to do here. I think something that everyone has to remember is that we're all going to have to adjust to a 'new normal' -- a balance between public health and economics. We can't just have 15% unemployment and millions of Americans collecting unemployment benefits forever. It's just not sustainable in an economy.

I do think the best thing that can be done to contain this is pretty simple: Wear a mask when in public, don't visit large groups of people, santizize, and wash regularly. There's really not much more that we can do as a society.

Government is left to fill in the rest of the issues there by getting more testing, developing better guidelines with both economic/public health in mind, and a vaccine at some point.

As I said before though, it's just rough to be business owner who's sitting around losing money everyday as you continue to pay rent on a restaurant that you're only able to get 25% of the revenues you had before from takein and all that, while protestors are roaming the streets in large groups defying the same order that you're following by keeping your business closed to the public.

Tough tough times.
787  Other / Politics & Society / Re: John Bolton fired by President Trump - BREAKING on: July 01, 2020, 05:47:30 PM
While the book may have some truth to it, I really think the fact that he didn't go in front of congress and answer their questions shows that all he wanted to do is profit from his book. While we all know that everyone (most people) write books with a profit incentive as the motive, it really does take away from the legitimacy of the claim.

If this story was different and he went in front of Congress and said all of these things and then wrote a book, then we'd be having a different conversation right now. But this really isn't a good look for Bolton.

Going to take some time to see if his claims are actually true.

Actually it shows he is full of shit. Lying to congress under oath is a crime. Lying in a book is not. He didn't say it in front of congress because he could legally be held responsible. If he just says it in a book he gets to attack Trump and manipulate the election with bullshit without facing possible criminal charges. It is really simple.

Pretty interesting take, and this is probably close to the truth. Never thought of it this way, totally good take TecShare.

In front of Congress if he was to lie or stretch the truth there would've been legal action threatened, though I doubt that Congress would've done anything on this front, they typically dont.

Right now he's still able to salavage a career with other Republicans who are moderate and anti Trump. Guy is just going to end up going into consulting like everyone else does, and he'll be able to live on with his 3m book advance -- if he can keep it that is.

Mayor Jenny Durkan issued an executive order, finally, to allow Seattle Police the authority to go in and retake CHOP. Looks like after 3 weeks it's finally over. I doubt she'll face political repercussions for allowing this to go unchecked.

https://komonews.com/news/local/seattle-police-clearing-chop-area-after-durkan-issues-executive-order

Not surpising to see and this was to be expected. I'm guessing that the people that were living in this area (not apart of CHAZ, literally just living there) and the business owners had enough and finally were able to force the Mayor to actually do something.

It doesn't help Chaz that they were openly calling for the removal of the Mayor though. She probably wasn't too happy with them for that. lol. I think she will face political repurcussions, this is totally something that voters are going to remember come November.

6 blocks of a major US city were 'taken over' by another group of people. Police had to retreat and leave the area so people could take over. That's not something that voters are typically too fond of.
790  Other / Politics & Society / Re: EU air safety agency suspends PIA to operate in Europe for 6 month on: July 01, 2020, 04:18:33 PM
The European Union Air Safety Agency (EASA) has suspended the authorisation for the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) to operate in Europe for six months, the airline's spokesman said on Tuesday.

The move follows the grounding of 262 pilots whose licences the Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan termed “dubious”.

“EASA has temporarily suspended PIA's authorisation to operate to the EU member states for a period of 6 months effective July 1, 2020, with the right to appeal against this decision,” a PIA statement said.

It added that PIA would discontinue all its flights to Europe temporarily.

Source: https://www.dawn.com/news/1566153

If this is covid related you light be beter off moving it to economics. I can see that they could do this in order to get the eruppean space agencies more flights to be able to keep running (just my speculation on it - the EU member states have given fairly large bailouts to airlines at least the UK have)...

Guess its related to fake pilot licensing..

@jackg this is not related to covid and you should have read the article as it clearly states that the issue is related to fake pilot licensing, and since most of them belong to PIA therefore they have decided to ban PIA Airlines. Also it’s pertinent to note that the Pilots association’s has rejected these accusations, and further PIA has the right to appeal which they’ll use and possibly get the ban revoked, hence this issue does fall between politics/society.

Totally something that falls within both sections, fine to be put here -- though none of us are really gatekeepers on what can and what cant be posted here.

Fake pilot licensing though, what in gods fuck. That just sounds like a recipe for disaster and it totally makes sense that the EU is cracking down on this. Last thing you want as a member of the EASA is to have blood on your hands because you turned a blind eye to credible allegations of fake pilot licenses.

If all of this is true (and isn't turned back in appeal) then this is totally a win for the EASA is doing the right thing and showing that they're doing the right thing for the member states.

Black Lives Matter protests win medical approval, but not Trump rallies. Is Covid-19 a marxist disease?

A group of over 1,000 “health experts” signed a letter supporting the ongoing Black Lives Matter protests and riots but are against any conservative, working American or Christian protest gathering.

These same dishonest hacks who advocated collapsing the global economy and demonized anyone who dared question the implementation of the lockdown and the ensuing destruction of civil liberties for the "general population" now try to explain how the dangerous Black Lives Matter protests and riots are good for society and acceptable during a pandemic.Just as America was boiling over in racial tensions, some 1,200 public health professionals and “community stakeholders” signed a letter that supported “demonstrations” that call attention to the “lethal force of white supremacy” in the US.

To the same "medical hypocrites experts and useful idiots" ...............

This is Michael Hickson, a 46-year-old coronavirus patient

Because he is a quadriplegic, doctors said his "quality of life" would be too low to be treated

So over the course of 6 days, they starved him to death

Michael was a Black man.Did his life not matter?

Black people STOP being deceived by these marxist parasites. They DON'T give a shit about you. They are emotionally manipulating you to adopt and endorse their warped ideology and will treat US ALL the same way as Michael was treated when we lose our "economic value" in their global factory. The free market and liberty is the best guarantor of freedom.Marxists are squandering your tax dollars. This is why there is inequality and why our economies are bankrupted and we are ALL sold into bondage to the elite.Utopia for them/Dystopia for us.Socialism for them/Communism for us.Marxists DON'T care about you.Marxists only care about marxism and climbing up it's ladder  ;-)

You couldn't make this shit up for an orwellian movie script and these are the "useful idiots" advising our governments.

Can't make this stuff up really.
How do you know this is not made up?

Prominent officials from both sides of the aisle have pointed out that Bolton's book is a cash grab. I shouldn't have to tell you that scandalous stories will sell more copies.

As it stands now, there is about as much evidence that Bolton's book is entirely accurate as there is evidence that the dossier on Trump created by Steele. I think most likely there is a lot of accurate information in both the dossier and Bolton's book, but also a lot of fabricated information, and it is difficult to determine what is true and what is made up.

It is like playing 'two truths and a lie', except you don't know the number of truths, nor lies.

Of course I don't know that it's not made up.

I do know that Trump says and does crazy shit all the time and from April 2018 - September 2019 Bolton was Trumps assistant for all things National Security.

I did some digging on his past (did you know allegedly he was a swinger in the 70s?) and I'm about 30% of the way through his book - I'm sure not every single detail is accurate, but imo it seems very unlikely he just fabricated any of these claims to make his memoir more exciting.

I think he's a history nerd that has consumed tons of books and already written two of his own.  If Trump never hired him he'd probably still write #3 and it would probably still be about Trump. (#2 was about Obama).

It's not the same as Scaramucci or Omarosa or Trump or Trump Jr who have ghost writers or at least hand holding throughout the writing process to make them feel like they wrote the book they're getting paid a shitload for.

While the book may have some truth to it, I really think the fact that he didn't go in front of congress and answer their questions shows that all he wanted to do is profit from his book. I think #1 plus a lot of angry tweets about billions of illegal votes.

+1 to that.

I really HIGHLY doubt that Trump is going to try to cause a coup like many are saying that he will. He's going to be pretty angry on twitter and all that, and he may still have some power over the rest of the party for a few years or so for endorsements and all that. Depends on how close the election is.

The 'lame duck' portion of his presidency are going to be filled with tons of pardons and tons of executive orders though, like any past president has done when they're on the way out.

Yeah.. It's not looking great for Trump right now, depending on how much you believe the polls and such..

Oh well..
If the land of the free is coming to an end I'll just have to change my game plan..

Trump wasn't bucking the experts or anything like that, he was just following what people in his administration were saying to do.

We did have false info from the chinese controlled WHO at the time too remember.. "no human to human infections"

Their was a lot of heat about the travel restrictions being "racist".. I don't care who says what.. I remember that shit..

Is Trump also supposed to be an infectious disease expert? Or listen to the ones that are that he hired?

I don't see how Trump fumbled on the china virus, but whatever..
It started with lies from china and the WHO and now the statistics on it are currently inflated for many reasons..

True on China lying, no one is going to argue about that. Not sure on if we're able to blame the WHO though, their task is to distibute information from health experts of the many different countries in the world. They don't really have the resources to go into a country and independently verify all of the information that is out there.

If we want them to do that, we should set them up with the task of that. Who knows how certain countries are going to react about that though (China, Russia, etc)

Trump isn't expected to be an infectious disease expert, though it's expected for the President to listen to his advisors. Plus -- Not supposed to promote things (medical) that dont work.

I'm not convinced that things would've played out much differently if China had been completely transparent (something nobody would ever expect them to do).

The whole world knew that in Jan China locked everyone down, started frantically building hospitals and shooting stray dogs.

In Feb and March we watched it spread through Europe, not too concerned.

And then April comes and you know the rest.

Is there really anything China could've told us in Dec/Jan  that would've had a bigger impact than watching a bunch of other countries go through it in real time over a 3 month period?

They would've had to of been very confident that it would hit us a few months later.  AND We would've had to convince us to self inflict economic damage.  So many things would need to go right.

If they got the time frame wrong, for example, and told us it was coming in Feb, after a couple weeks everyone would just be screaming that China was just playing the 'why are you hitting yourself' game with America.

I think the problem on China lying is that we could've shut down travel with China (either coming directly from China, or who were there recently) much earlier then it was done. Now while this isn't a foolproof plan, and a large amount of people still end up infected -- but it does limit how bad the initial outbreak is.

Then again: Who knows if we are to take the warning signs from China even if they're provided at face value. I'm just saying that if we knew about how horrible the death and destruction was and how infectious this disease was, we probably would've been able to do something quicker. Or at least had that opportunity.

Not only did Chinas lies dupe policy makers, it stopped the medical health experts from being able to make a determination on what to do next.

The deck was stacked against us because of Chinas lies.

China virus? Don't you remember all the left calling him racist for his travel restrictions?

That didn't really happen.  He just says it did.

They call him racist all the time, but there was very little criticism of the travel restrictions he put in place in Jan.  Other countries were already doing it, or about to do it.  And the 3 biggest US based airlines had already cancelled all flights in and out of China.

+1 to that.

Trump is more or less lying about the whole travel restriction and how he was bucking the trend on doing it. You can see here (https://www.factcheck.org/2020/03/the-facts-on-trumps-travel-restrictions/)(If you don't like the source itself, look at who they source, its legit) that Trump wasn't bucking the experts or anything like that, he was just following what people in his administration were saying to do.

Didn't know about the 3 biggest US airlines already stopping travel though. Makes this seem more and more insignificant as more facts come out.

"Neither"  was the largest segment of registered voters.

It's misleading to call it a "majority" in election context, which typically means >50%. What you're describing is usually called a "plurality" when talking about elections.

God if I another few percent of people voted, they could change the fate of elections. 2016 election was probably decided by like 150k total votes (spread across a few battleground / swing states - PA, WISC, FLORIDA, etc)

It was ~80k votes across PA, MI, and WI that made the difference. I don't know if "few percent" would be enough to change it. 5% of additional voters would need to vote ~60:40 against the otherwise-winning candidate to overcome even a tiny 1% winning margin. Sounds unlikely unless all those additional votes come from a largely atypical voter demographic, like millennials, and you know how I feel about those lazy bastards. They wouldn't show up to vote even if you handed out participation-trophy-shaped avocado toast at the polls.

Totally unlikely. But the few percent comment of mine is typically pointed at millennials and the generation below them which can vote now as well (youngest millenail is like 25 now, right?) Millenials and below them would be people who would typically be voting for democrats.

Another 10k people come out in Michigan (all voting Democrat) and that state is flipped. It's crazy that people will bitch and moan about how horrible some of the people in government are, but won't go and vote.

So many people believe the 'my vote doesn't really matter anyway' and it just kills voter turnout.

To add to this post, Fox News released a poll recently and it's shedding light on American's perceptions of the country after coronavirus. It is devastating for the Trump team, to say the least - https://www.foxnews.com/politics/fox-news-poll-biden-more-trusted-on-coronavirus-trump-on-economy

Summary of poll conducted of registered voters -

  • 88% are concerned about coronavirus spending.
  • 78% are worried about the economy.
  • An 11% drop in positive perception of the economy with 58% viewing the economy poorly.
  • Biden leads Trump 48% to 40% in a General Election match up among registered voters
  • Trump is losing in job approval ratings with independents by 26%. (60-34)
  • Trump leads men by 8 points but loses women by 25% in job approval ratings
  • Biden leads in independents 40-27% in a general election match up

The economy needs to recover for Trump to have a realistic shot at reelection. Prior to coronavirus, I think most Americans were okay with Trump antics because the U.S. economy, stock market, jobs numbers, ect. were doing great. Now that the economy is sunk, what's Trump's reelection message? I don't think the Trump campaign has much on defense and will most likely need to get by on attacking Joe Biden instead of defending their own record. Trump's economic policy was great prior to the virus, but it's hard to make the case to voters to look at the past. Democrats have clear lines of attack against the economy, Trump's coronavirus response, and maybe general corruption allegations so their strategy is already set in place. I just don't think Biden is the guy to deliver on these attacks.

100% the economy has to recover and be booming again for Trump to have a shot at reelection. That was his way of convincing moderates who may not have liked his rhetoric, that he was a good choice to be elected and now reelected. That was the great group of people known as the 401k votes (who are probably still pretty happy right now tbh)

Trump also needs to show old people that he's doing a good job on his Coronavirus response. Poll numbers show that they REALLY haven't been happy with the response. They're the ones that are most at risk of dying, and they're the ones that vote the most, if you lose that BLOC you lose the election.

Trump is in an interesting time that I don't think many could have pulled themself out of. All of these are outside forces (regarding corona, economy, etc) that would bring any administration and reelection bid to its knees.

Though as I've said time and time again, we have a LONG time until November and we have debates to look forward too. Presidential elections aren't decided by sheer pop vote, they're decided by the EC. If Trump plays the EC right, then he could win the EC by not much but lose the pop vote by more then he did last time.

Only time will tell.

The majority of Americans voted for no one last time. They chose no giving a crap over either candidate, because it didnt have that much effect on their personal life.

Last time? 2016 turnout was 55%, typical for a presidential election. So most people did vote for someone.

Can we talk for a moment about how low this really is. Like we had the two most hated candidates going up against one another. Each party beleives that they have the most to lose if the other candidate is elected and only a little bit more then half of people show up to vote.

Probably not going to change during this election cycle TBH. We'll have the same numbers, and the people that aren't voting are going to be the same people complaining that the system is flawed.
