https://www.zerohedge.com/crypto/hashrate-domination-china-controls-two-thirds-worlds-crypto-networks-processing-power

Effectively China can initiate a 51% attack at any time. Given their stranglehold on network infrastructure, this is not at all a stretch.

That'd mean they would have to seize, or put an order out to the companies that control the vast processing power within Crypto. I'd assume that most with listen to them, as they know what would happen if they wouldn't (insert pictures of China killing people who disagree with them here)

Though if a 51 percent attack were attempted, we'd probably see the end of Crypto as people don't see the trust anymore. Would be a very crazy battle to see as people outside of China boot up their unprofitable machines just in an attempt to keep the integrity of the network.

Wild to think about.
1542  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Nazis were socialists - Change my mind on: December 15, 2019, 08:17:02 AM
But they were nazis at first place. Who cares about all the rest?

Nazi is a made up term in recent time.
They are and were National Socialists.

I don't think the name is a good point of evidence to be using. I wouldn't say that the North Korean Government is democratic because their official name is 'Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea' Nothing about them is democratic nor for the people. Same thing with China I'm pretty sure.

The Nazis wanted to redefine Socialism, as I said before, they wanted to build a new system around the term socialism -- which was practically authoritarianism with private ownership, though you still had to work with the government or you'd be fucked -- think of something like China, which I think is a pretty good example of such government.

They're not socialists.
1543  Other / Politics & Society / Re: No ifs, no buts, not maybe Brexit is happening by 31st January 2020. on: December 15, 2019, 07:11:42 AM
The reason that Boris one is that he ran on a very simple platform. He's going to get brexit done and get over with it. He never said that he's going to do a 'hard exit' or anything along those lines, as he'll be negotiating with the EU as of right now -- though he does have a good deal of cushion b/c he has a MASSIVE majority (biggest since Thatcher in the 80's)

Fucking Corbyn is an idiot -- trying to appease both sides didn't work out for him and now the guy is going to be out of a job.

Boris knows that if he can get a nice win on leaving the EU and getting an OKAY deal with them, then he can move on to real policy and showing that he keeps his promises.
1544  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Greta Thunberg is the time's person of the year 2019 on: December 11, 2019, 09:21:44 PM
.... Times is just trying to sell more magazines, they don't really care about who the best person in the world was for 2019. Just trying to stir up some controversy and bring people to their site and to buy their magazines.

The HK protesters should've won this one. They're the people who are truly fighting against an oppressive government that doesn't care about them. People are literally being shot by police, while protesting, and the news barely covers it.

Shows what side the media, the big corporations, and the politicians are truly on (even Trump)

I think putting Hong Kong protestors on the cover would do the most good. (they need all the support they can get, plus a great way to shame China).

But they decide based on who's had the most influence.

Hong Kong is just something that the world is kind of just watching with interest.

Trump or Putin probably deserve the cover most imo.  Would be boring if they just picked world leaders every year though.

I mean if we're talking about influence or the person who's been in the news the most : Trump.

But yes, I think the HK protestors truly do need a win like this. People may not fully understand it, but being on the cover of something like the Times brings people to research a topic that they may not know much about. HK needs that. Most people don't even know whats going on there. As world leaders, politicans, news, corporations, and so on ignore it.
1545  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The international shame of Russia on: December 11, 2019, 09:09:25 PM
As they should be shamed. If this was a few individual athletes doping, and the government hadn't had any knowledge of the events at all then that's one thing. But this was a government orchestrated event, endorsed by the Kremlin in order to make the Russians seem superior in international sports, which they aren't.

This was a state backed effort, and due to such they should be banned for 4 years and all of the officials that orchestrated this should be banned from international sports as well.

We'll see what comes out of this, as they still have time to take this to arbitration.
1546  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Greta Thunberg is the time's person of the year 2019 on: December 11, 2019, 05:01:13 PM
Don't see the problem here. A kid who managed to reach UN, talked to all leaders in the world and became the face of the scientific consensus on climate change doesn't deserve to be person of the year?

I mean, she's at the age well all of you (and myself) were mainly interested in porn and that's all.

At 16 my biggest achievement would probably be my first sex ever. Her achievement is to have travelled the whole world to uphold what she believes (and the vast majority of people who got an education) is the most important political question of the century.

Who am I to disagree?

HK is nothing. Litterally nothing. Just a poor population fighting its government. We get that every year. Nothing new.
US is trying to make it political against China but that's not even the first revendication for HK protesters. There first revendication is on rents and life cost. It's just that the West likes to make them fighters for freedom, which they are not.

I'm not saying what she did isn't great. It is, she's fighting for the climate. Great.

But there are people in Hong Kong who have been protesting since -- June? -- against China and have been standing their ground. The Chinese government has had to admit that they were shooting live ammunition at the protests -- THEY'RE SHOOTING LIVE AMMUNITION AT THE PROTESTORS -- I HOPE SOMEONE UNDERSTANDS WHAT  THAT MEANS.

In the US we barely get 50 percent of people out to vote (Averaging presidential and non pres years) but in Hong Kong they currently have about 30 percent of the population protesting.

1547  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Nazis were socialists - Change my mind on: December 11, 2019, 04:34:01 PM
Well, I'll try. A socialist is defined as such - "a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole." (Google)

I've grabbed some info from the Historians subreddit to refute this, as I'm ya know not a historian.

"National Socialism", or in German; "Nationalsozialismus" is a term that was created when the Nazis(Well... I guess they weren't Nazis before they invented the term Nazi... They were DAP's, I guess) attempted to create a nationalist redefinition of "Socialism", an alternative to both classical schools of Socialism and various Liberal ideas. Nazism rejected the Marxist concept of class conflict, opposed cosmopolitan internationalism, everything we commonly associate with the modern understanding of Socialism, and sought to create a new German socialism in which individuals subordinate their personal interests to the "common good", accepting political interests as the main priority of economic organization.

In an interview with George Sylvester Viereck in 1923 Adolf Hitler himself said:

"Socialism is the science of dealing with the common weal. Communism is not Socialism. Marxism is not Socialism. The Marxians have stolen the term and confused its meaning. I shall take Socialism away from the Socialists. Socialism is an ancient Aryan, Germanic institution. Our German ancestors held certain lands in common. They cultivated the idea of the common weal. Marxism has no right to disguise itself as socialism. Socialism, unlike Marxism, does not repudiate private property. Unlike Marxism, it involves no negation of personality, and unlike Marxism, it is patriotic. We might have called ourselves the Liberal Party. We chose to call ourselves the National Socialists. We are not internationalists. Our socialism is national. We demand the fulfilment of the just claims of the productive classes by the state on the basis of race solidarity. To us state and race are one."1

And even though the term was the same as the one used by Marxists and Utopian Socialists, Hitler was not afraid to make it clear that this term was one that they had adopted, and that in their usage, it is very much the opposite of what we normally associate with Socialism. In a speech in 1938 Hitler said:

"'Socialist' I define from the word 'social; meaning in the main ‘social equity’. A Socialist is one who serves the common good without giving up his individuality or personality or the product of his personal efficiency. Our adopted term 'Socialist' has nothing to do with Marxian Socialism. Marxism is anti-property; true socialism is not.[...]"2

Why exactly Hitler choose the word Socialism, only he himself knows. But we can speculate and make qualified guesses based on our knowledge of the past. A very common theory is that it was chosen to sway working-class votes. Germany has a pretty substantial and rich Socialist tradition. The most prominent Socialist thinkers are from Germany: Marx, Engels, Kautsky, Bebel, Liebknecht the elder, Lassalle, etc. all Germans. And the Socialists were popular in the elections around the time where the term Nationalsozialismus was adopted, with the SPD and the USPD scoring around 35% of the votes in the 1920 election.34

2:The Speeches of Adolf Hitler

3: Kershaw, Ian (1999). Hitler 1889-1936

4: Nohlen, D & Stöver, P (2010) Elections in Europe: A data handbook,

So, one of the big reasons that Hitler had referred to this as Socialism was an attempt to sway working class voters (a large part of the German voting bloc) to his camp. As said above, the most popular socialist thinkers had been from Germany.

Hm, the only reason I could see people wanting to do this is to ensure that they don't get hacked during a time where they're not going to be able to be on their computer or they're addicted to the forum. Probably the first one to be honest.

All of this can be solved with using signatures when buying/selling things. You'd be able to ensure that you keep your reputation on the forum.

Also ya know -- safe password -- safe email -- so on and so forth.
1550  Other / Politics & Society / Re: [BET] Trump or not Trump 2020, eddie13 vs suchmoon on: December 10, 2019, 09:33:58 PM
Crazy bet my friend suchmoon, I remember when casinos offer x5 if trump wins the elections, in that moment i place a bet and people were crazy saying i was wating my money. But it has a happy end.

The problem with this bet is the odds, as you can see in nitro if donal trumps win the house pays x2.125

https://nitrogensports.eu/sport/specials/u.s.-presidential-election

This way if eddie13 places a bet on that site he could warrants a win. If trump wins he get 0.0125 and if trump loses he gets zero but he doesn't lose the risked 0.1

You've got it backwards. (I think)

Nitrogen is offering 2.125x (+115) On Trump

Eddie took 2.0x with Suchmoon (+100) On Trump

You're right, the other bookie websites will be paying out more. But there's no real way to hedge this whole thing b/c there's no Dem nominee at this point and any money that you put on any individual candidate (think Biden) could turn into nothing if hes not the nominee.

You'd get more on Nitrogen, but who knows if Nitrogen is going to be around in a year and you'd have to leave it on their centralized exchange for this whole time.
1551  Other / Politics & Society / Re: "China's Gold-Backed Crypto Currency Will Blindside US Dollar" on: December 10, 2019, 07:26:06 PM

I see what's being thought of here now. Didn't make too much sense on ZeroHedge as its too short, cryptic, and doesn't truly explain anything.

I feel like this is a pretty good quote in showing that this may not be able to happen.

Another obstacle standing in the path of China’s ambitions to price oil in yuan is the currency itself. The yuan is not yet fully convertible, it’s fixed daily, prone to intervention and subject to capital controls.

Given that regime of tight control over the currency, many global players are likely to assume a yuan-denominated oil benchmark would be firmly under Beijing’s thumb.

“My biggest reservations are the role of the Chinese central government, potential state intervention and favoritism toward Chinese companies,” said John Driscoll, director of JTD Energy Services in Singapore and a former oil trader whose career spans nearly 40 years.

China does have some partners they'd be able to tap though, and they might be able to make some more friends through investment. Might be able to work out with them, but the US isn't going to take this one sitting down.
1552  Other / Politics & Society / Re: [BET] Trump or not Trump 2020, eddie13 vs suchmoon on: December 10, 2019, 06:38:24 PM
The liberal insanity has been so high that Trump has to win.

He doesn't have to if Republicans decided to grow a backbone. But since they're going the opposite route I wonder where they'll find a mumbling idiot to nominate in 2024 to keep the base happy. Anyone wanna offer bets on that? Smiley

Bad bet suchmoon

No big deal - eddie13 said Bitcoin's gonna be like $300k by that time so I won't have any financial worries.

So, If I bet there trump to win a @125, if Trump did win I would win .125 if I bet .1?
[...]
According to that chart with hitlery @ +3000, If I bet .1 on the shilldog to win it would pay 30X and therefore pay out 3.0 BTC for a .1 BTC bet?

In a nutshell, yes. There is fine print too, usually hidden somewhere and it's often not well-suited for non-sports events and may come down to "we'll pay you if we feel like it".

Yeah I don't think anyone would feel to comfortable betting on an illegal / not regulated online bookie website for something that's not going to be decided for another year or so. So that's not something  I'd be willing to do.

A Decentralized bet on ETH, MAYBE. But even that I'd feel that within that year time frame someone would be able to crack some code within the decentralized site.

Too long for a bet on a site like this, p2p with multisig is prob best for bigger bets. Smaller ones I guess you could just trust the other side to cough it up.
1553  Other / Politics & Society / Re: "China's Gold-Backed Crypto Currency Will Blindside US Dollar" on: December 10, 2019, 06:25:26 PM
Confused on how/why China would actually be able to blindside the US dollar with their goldbacked currency. I don't think anyone really is going to care and they'd much rather seek the usage of the US dollar -- which is accepted everywhere -- instead of using some random gold back crypto from China that isn't vetted.

This article is only like 3 sentences as well, what's the significance here anyway?
1554  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The impeachment tides are turning. on: December 10, 2019, 04:59:01 PM
I do think that as we get closer and closer to the 2020 election, and even the Democratic primaries without an impeachment vote happening this will look like more and more of a sham and makes the voters think that this was done to ensure that Trump doesn't win in 2020.

We'll see what they do on timing here, though I do think they should get going fast or this looks worse and worse.
That's exactly what Trump want the voters to think, that his presidency has been targeted by the Democrats even since he was inaugurated, first with the Mueller investigation which ended in nothing and now with this impeachment issue being brought to light. The Democrats have no message for the American people so this is what they believe will help them win.

Well yes, obviously that's what Trump wants. It's his best shot of convincing the voters that the reason behind the lack of more legislative changes (outside of tax cuts) is because of Democrats hitting him with tons of investigations, hindering him. I don't think this is true, I think there were issues with keeping the Republican caucus united, but if the GOP can spin it that way to the voters that can do well on that front.
1555  Other / Politics & Society / Re: [BET] Trump or not Trump 2020, eddie13 vs suchmoon on: December 10, 2019, 05:55:50 AM
Hm, this is interesting. Give me a few days to think it over.

I don't think that Pence has any shot of being elected if Trump was to be impeached and found guility, dies, etc. I think that if Trump is gone, Pence is probably going to go with him and the GOP has no shot of winning.

So yeah, going to think that one over and shoot back to ya here with my thoughts.

Sure, no problem.

It'd be worth the comedy value alone if you pick Hillary for a hedge Grin

The real hedge is to pick Biden Smiley

But yes, it would be worth the comedy value IMO to pick someone like Hillary, Bloomberg, etc.
1556  Other / Politics & Society / Re: [BET] Trump or not Trump 2020, eddie13 vs suchmoon on: December 10, 2019, 03:39:06 AM
I mean if those were the conditions, I think you'd have to pay more in the event that Trump does win -- as you're missing a good deal of conditions in that one. This one is fair, as it's 1:1 with a good deal of conditions ensuring that as I said before, both sides are happy.

I'd be willing to make a bet like that, let me know.

Do you mean you'd want to do a 1:1 with the same conditions like the OP? Boring Smiley

How about this: pick Trump and one other person who you think would be elected if Trump dies etc, can be a Republican or a Democrat, doesn't matter. Let's say you pick Trump+Pence, if either of them is elected President - you win, if not - I win, no other conditions, even-money bet (1:1). Then your risk (other than Trump losing) is only (1) something catastrophic/unconstitutional; or (2) if you picked the wrong 2nd person, e.g. Pence is impeached along with Trump LOL.

Actually I haven't checked what odds bookies are offering for Pence, I might be too generous here Grin

1557  Other / Politics & Society / Horowitz Report and FBI Abuse - WSJ on: December 10, 2019, 03:31:43 AM
The IG Horowitz report has finally come out. Here are some takeaways, I've sourced these from the WSJ and the reddit (Typically The_Donald, Politics, etc)

Here is some of the info that I gathered from the report. I'll start off with some of the info from The_Donald:

Page 196-FBI lies about corroborating Steele dossier info

FBI ignores glaring issues with dossier's credibility
AG Barr's statement
Page 414-Three teams assigned to the investigation all made "basic and fundamental errors"
Horowitz summary
Fusion GPS fuckery
Confidential human sources

Quote
Statement of U.S. Attorney John H. Durham
“I have the utmost respect for the mission of the Office of Inspector General and the comprehensive work that went into the report prepared by Mr. Horowitz and his staff. However, our investigation is not limited to developing information from within component parts of the Justice Department. Our investigation has included developing information from other persons and entities, both in the U.S. and outside of the U.S. Based on the evidence collected to date, and while our investigation is ongoing, last month we advised the Inspector General that we do not agree with some of the report’s conclusions as to predication and how the FBI case was opened.”
Then you have the other side, the /r/politics subreddit:

Breaking: Dossier author Chris Steele had a meeting at Trump Tower, and maintains he was not biased against President Trump and in fact maintained a close friendship with a family member and was, if anything, “favourably disposed” to the Trumps. Extract from the OIG report here:

The full report. Here are excerpts of every single finding on political bias in the Executive Summary:

Page III. On Opening the Main Investigation.
We concluded that Priestap's exercise of discretion in opening the investigation was in compliance with Department and FBI policies, and we did not find documentary or testimonial evidence that political bias or improper motivation influenced his decision.

Page IV. On Opening Four Individual Investigations of Page, Manafort, Papadapoulous and Flynn.
We did not find documentary or testimonial evidence that political bias or improper motivation influenced the decisions to open the four individual investigations.

Page VI. On FISA of Carter Page
We did not find documentary or testimonial evidence that political bias or improper motivation influenced the FBI's decision to seek FISA authority on Carter Page.

Page XVII. On Usage of Confidential Human Sources and Undercover Employees.
Finally, we also found no documentary or testimonial evidence that political bias or improper motivations influenced the FBI's decision to use CHSs or UCEs to interact with Trump campaign officials in the Crossfire Hurricane investigation.

And a Bonus on Page II. On Steele Dossier playing no role whatever in the Predication of the Investigation

These officials, though, did not become aware of Steele's election reporting until weeks laterand we therefore determined that Steele's reports played no role in the Crossfire Hurricane opening.

Emphatic rejection, on every single point, of the Barr/Trump conspiracy that the Russia investigation - or any aspect thereof - was politically biased or motivated.

I'll continue to add things here as we and other sources find them, I'm not going to make a conclusion here because there's a ton of info here.

Big fan of how this bet was laid out. Makes both sides feel as if they're not cheated in the event of something catastrophic happening or in the event that some Republican senators flip on Trump.

I would still love to have a straight YOLO Trump-all-the-way bet without any conditions. There are definitely some users here who are 100% convinced that the impeachment is a hoax and that the re-election is a done deal. I would consider a bet against that but it would have to be decent-sized multisig-escrowed no-bullshit offer to make it worthwhile.

Something about knife attacks makes it feel more evil. To be able to stick a knife into someone, I can't explain it, just makes it more psychopathic. Though I believe the citizens should be allowed to own guns, there would probably had been more victims if the terrorist was able to get a hold of guns.

evil people use knives, good people do this:

I'm guessing this is a drone attack, well this is the perfect time to say that drone attacks have been argued to be one of the most humane methods of warfare. May not seem true at first glance, but I think it's much better for both sides to be able to blow up one spot in particular at a particular time with little to no chance of missing the mark. WAIT A SECOND BEFORE YOU SPAM ME WITH LINKS ABOUT INNOCENT PEOPLE DYING IN THESE ATTACKS -- Yes, there are issues with drones as well. But what's better, carpet bombing cities to take out one terrorist or killing a few with precision.
