861  Economy / Economics / Re: FBI aims to keep valuables, $86M cash confiscated in safe deposit store raid on: July 11, 2021, 03:12:22 PM
This is another justification of having your own safe vaults. Entrusting it to a third-party will always come with greater risks compared to when you're keeping the things on your own.
One very good reason to "outsource" your valuables is to prevent a $5 wrench attack. If a burglar can't open your wall safe, he can beat you up when you get home.

It is extremely risky to store valuables (such as physical cash or bullion coins) at home irrespective of the crime rate in the area where you live. The authorities want you to store your wealth in banks (either in the form of cash in savings accounts, or in the form of stocks/mutual funds/ETFs in demat account). But at this point, there are a lot of people who don't trust these banks (and also the locker services which they provide). Such individuals go for private safe deposit boxes, and the authorities have well known reasons to discourage this practise.
862  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Monero: A good long-term investment? on: July 11, 2021, 02:11:46 PM
Everyone should remember one thing at this point. Just because a project is old, that doesn't mean that it will go up in the future. Unless the developers could take care of the challenges and issues, the project will never get wide acceptability. And this is what happened with Monero. The project itself was really good in terms of technology and implementation. But the developers failed to take care of various issues on time, and then the liquidity issues made trading extremely difficult. And once a project goes down in the cryptocurrency market, it is really hard to resuscitate it.

864  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How many scammers have you funded by putting your money in? on: July 11, 2021, 01:51:33 PM
I didn't send money to anybody. But i've lost my Steam account when i was 12 y.o. on website that was promising me free games. And few years later i wanted to trade my stuff in steam too, i've sent my inventory but that guy didn't send me money. But i didn't need those stuff so i wasn't sad.

And after this i've been really careful with any suspicious sites or messages on the web and didn't fall in any scam.

The first time I lost money on internet was when I lost $600 in 2008 or 2009 (back then it was a big amount). I had joined an affiliate marketing scheme and they promised unbelievable returns if I purchase one of their "premium plans". I paid the amount, and they vanished with my money. First entered cryptocurrency sector in 2012. And the next year, I lost a majority of my coins to one of the crypto-investment scams. And even after this incident, there were 2-3 occasions where I lost smaller number of coins. Anyway, I guess now I have learnt my lesson.
865  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: After China, Now it's Mexico's Turn to Ban Crypto on: July 11, 2021, 01:41:19 PM
In my opinion, Mexico banning Crypto will not negatively affect the future of crypto. a lot of negative information that was built especially by the rich in mexico who only to manipulate the market for his personal gain. Therefore, it does not have any impact on the prohibition of cryptocurrencies in Mexico, in fact the crypto market continues to experience a Bull Run.

Mexico has not proposed any new regulation to limit the ownership or trading of cryptocurrencies. One of the billionaires organized a press conference a few days back and claimed that his bank will start accepting Bitcoin. The central bank came up with a clarification that the bank mentioned here is not allowed to do so, as it is against the existing banking regulations. It is clear that the government hasn't introduced any new law against cryptocurrency. Obviously for the clickbait driven posters here, they are very talentful to convert such irrelevant stories to catchy titles.
866  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What happen if US ban cryptocurrencies? on: July 11, 2021, 01:31:09 PM
If the US bans cryptocurrencies it will certainly have a negative impact. Recently the US has increased scrutiny of cryptocurrencies. However, the ban does not appear to apply to Bitcoin. I don't think the US will ban Bitcoin. Too many things to do in court. Moreover, a number of crypto industry leaders in the US are so trusting of crypto assets.

It is not easy to ban the ownership of cryptocurrencies in the United States, because such a measure will go against the US constitution. Even if the government proposes such a measure, it will be struck down by the Supreme Court. Such a measure can be implemented only in dictatorial countries, such as China and North Korea. What the US government can do is to impose additional restrictions on the trade of cryptocurrencies. It would make conversion of crypto to fiat (and reverse) more difficult. But it can also push the transactions underground, to TOR-based dex sites and P2P platforms.
867  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why do many people who do not understand Bitcoin slander Bitcoin? on: July 11, 2021, 01:21:08 PM
so it is jealousy at some point. they are jealous that others are enjoying the btc market while they dont have any idea how to get a hold of some satoshis. and sometimes, the ignorance is also a big factor. if they don't know a thing or two on the topic, they tend to get defensive or say negative criticisms because of ignorance.

Jealousy is the main reason, and this is the case especially with the rich people. I have talked to a lot of rich people and I understand their mentality. They always want the poor to remain as such. Also, they don't want the poor people to improve their lives by getting better skills and education. Instead the rich class want the poor to remain dependant on freebies and handouts, so that they can manipulate them. Once they are dependent on handouts, the poor individuals cease to have their own opinion and they develop an almost slave like mentality towards those who provide them the freebies.

Now Bitcoin is something that can disrupt this status quo. It can free a lot of people from this indirect slavery. And that explains the hatred that may rich people have towards Bitcoin and the other decentralized cryptocurrencies.
868  Economy / Economics / Re: Poor and middle class as a mentality on: July 11, 2021, 01:11:07 PM
Poor people mentality is when they have money, they spend it on relaxation and luxury. Unlike middle class, they spend their money wisely. With poor people, they lack enough knowledge on handling their finances and where to put it. They also rely on other people and support from the government unlike middle class, they value their hard earned money. They adopt what they learned in school. They are eager to be wealthy and be comfortable in their lives.

That is not the case on all the occasions. But it is understandable. When someone works really hard to earn money, he will think twice before wasting it. When I was a student, my parents were providing me with financial support. Back then, I used to spend a lot of money on unnecessary things. But now, I have a full time job and I know how hard is it to earn money. Same is the case with the poor people. When they get freebies and handouts from the government, they are careless with those. But when they work hard and earn, they don't waste much of the earnings.
869  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Euro 2020 and covid-19 on: July 11, 2021, 01:01:11 PM
What I have read about herd immunity is that you need to fully vaccinate 75% to 85% of the population to achieve it. And looking at the vaccination numbers, it looks as if England is a long way away from that figure. They have fully vaccinated 51% of the total population. I am OK with restarting the economy on a limited scale. But allowing crowd in to sports events is not something that I would recommend at the moment. Most of the revenue comes from broadcast deals and it doesn't make any sense to allow fans in to the stadiums.
870  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: ⚽UEFA EURO 2020 Discussion Thread | Current Phase: Finals in June 2021! on: July 11, 2021, 12:51:05 PM
I do feel it's such a shame that the whole tournament seems to be based on Covid (in terms of spectators) and I felt it was quite strange that England got the exemptions when the news seems to say they're equally affected by further outbreaks, and seems even worse in terms of new infections, but still they got their way and no complaints from anyone. Whoever is professional doesn't care where they play but you can't ignore the boost of home advantage.

If Italy lose I'll be sad, but I guess the bigger story will be England winning for the first time in 55 years! Chiesa another goal, please!

Well.. you know the facts. England got the exemption, because they vaccinated more than 60% of their population (Italy managed to inoculate just half that number). The cases are increasing once more in England, but the situation is under control and the number of deaths have remained low. I am also supporting Italy for today's match (I guess a majority of those outside England are rooting for Italy), but for them it will be a very tough job to face England in front of all the English fans at Wembley. It can be quite intimidating, as Denmark found out a few days back.
871  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: [CONMEBOL] Copa America 2021 [Argentina The Champions] on: July 11, 2021, 12:41:07 PM
This might be Leo Messi first and last international trophy win for his country and that was the reason he was crying with happiness. Such feelings and moments are once in a life time and are always remember. If Diego Maradona was alive, he would have been very happy today.

I would have been happier if the legend Diego Maradona was alive to see this. He was always worried about Argentina's slump during recent times. This victory hold enormous significance for every Argentina fan around the world. I am residing in Asia, and a lot of my friends and neighbors were cheering for Argentina. Bad luck for Neymar and the Brazilian team, but this time it was the turn of Argentina to lift the trophy after such a lengthy gap. I just hope that they will perform well in the next world cup as well.
872  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Big companies finally had enough of the excessive tax on: July 11, 2021, 12:31:09 PM
Heavily depends on the country you are living in. I know some countries raise quite hefty taxes for gambling, but a lot of countries raise no taxes or very close to zero. There are a lot of European countries who raise no taxes for gambling.

There are two types of taxes. First one of the tax paid on winnings by the gamblers. As you have stated, this tax is zero in most of the European Union nations (because the gambling industry is already taxed, and if you tax the winnings as well, then it will account as double-taxing). But the winnings are taxable in countries such as USA and India. Now the second type of tax is the tax paid by casinos on their revenue. The OP is talking about this tax, and as far as I know, all the EU nations have very high tax rates for the gambling businesses.
873  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: ⚽UEFA EURO 2020 Discussion Thread | Current Phase: Finals in June 2021! on: July 11, 2021, 12:21:18 PM
I just found this picture on Twitter

Almost supporter for Italy, all Europe exception England off course. I don't know why England doesn't have a supporter much, I'm pretty sure my country also Supports Italy like me. I hope they fair to play and present the match without controversy. I'm happy to see the Conmebol final even if I lose in a bet because they present a fair match. I hope the euro final like that too.

It is just a meme, and I don't think that it is closer to the truth. But outside the participants, Italy will be having a higher level of support IMO. Because the boorish behavior of the English fans during their semi-final match against Denmark angered a lot of neutral viewers. Showing aggression is not bad in the field. But when this aggression turns to bullying and intimidation, a lot of the fans don't support it. This is one of the reasons why I almost never support the Netherlands team. The Dutch defenders sometimes forget that they are playing football and take out their kung fu skills in the field.
874  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: ODI cricket and general cricketing discussion [self - mod] on: July 11, 2021, 12:11:16 PM
Anyone watching the Ireland vs South Africa ODI match? It is important for both the sides, because South Africa is currently at the rock bottom, as far as the points table in ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League 2020-2022 is concerned. They have only 9 points from 3 matches so far, while Ireland is at 10th place. Ireland has 20 points, although they have played more matches (9). Weather is also a concern, as in the past a large number of matches scheduled in Ireland/Scotland were washed out due to interruptions from rain.
875  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Test Cricket Prediction and Discussion Thread [self - mod] on: July 11, 2021, 12:01:16 PM
A minimum of 42 overs remaining, and the 9th wicket has added 40 runs from 11 overs so far. I don't think that the tailend batsmen can survive for 40+ overs. Anyway, it was not their job, after the top order and the middle order put up such a pathetic performance. But so far, it is good batting from both Donald Tiripano and Blessing Muzarabani. Taskin Ahmed will be looking for his 5th wicket in the innings, as he has already got 4 till now. After this match, it is going to be another long wait for the Zimbabwe team to have a test match against one of the top division teams.
876  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Test Cricket Prediction and Discussion Thread [self - mod] on: July 09, 2021, 04:52:30 AM
It is difficult to predict against both Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. You will not see any continuity in their performance. Even if they play well in one innings, no one can guarantee that they will be able to collect a good one in the next innings. In the first innings, Bangladesh's top order batsmen have completely failed to contribute to the team's collection, I do not expect anything good from them in the second innings. But Shakib and Miraj can play well.

Without Shakib al Hasan, Bangladesh is a big zero. During this test match also, it was clear. Shakib got out for a duck and the entire top order and middle order collapsed. The absence of Tamim Iqbal due to knee injury made things worse. Fortunately for Bangladesh, Liton Das and the other lower order batsmen managed to rescue them. And for Zimbabwe, they don't have any such player who can single handedly win test matches. Brendan Taylor used to be one, during his younger days. But he seems to be out of form now.
877  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: ODI cricket and general cricketing discussion [self - mod] on: July 09, 2021, 04:38:56 AM
Pakistan played their previous series against weak Zimbabwe. They had an outstanding performance in every match against Zimbabwe and easily won almost all the matches. But now their opponent is strong England. Looking at the performance of the last match, one can easily guess how strong the Pakistan squad is. Only 141 runs were collected. England won the match in just 25 overs, losing just one wicket. Both the bowling and batting sides of Pakistan are weak now.

It is not easy for the subcontinent teams to adjust with the English conditions. For the batsmen, they were playing in flat tracks of sub-continent till now and suddenly they are finding themselves in the seaming and bouncing pitches in Europe. Sri Lanka had the same issue, and now Pakistan is also struggling. But I expected the Pakistanis to fare better, because some of them were playing county cricket in England recently. For example, Babar Azam had represented Somerset last year (and created some controversy by refusing to display the logo from an alcohol brand).
878  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: ODI cricket and general cricketing discussion [self - mod] on: July 08, 2021, 02:26:36 PM
LOL.. Pakistan at 130/8. After the thrashing Sri Lanka received earlier, now it is the turn of another Asian team to get whacked in England. And this time England was without their regular players as well. Ironically, the player who did the most amount of damage (Saqib Mahmood) is eligible to play for Pakistan as per the ICC rules (although I don't think that he'll be willing to do so), since his parents are from that country. Usually in overseas conditions, it is Babar Azam who bats like a one man army. But today he got out for zero and it was left to Fakhar Zaman to take Pakistan to a decent total.
879  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Which Covid 19 Vaccine is is the best ? on: July 08, 2021, 02:04:26 PM
Sinovac vaccine has a single-dose efficiency of just 3%, according to a study performed by Universidad de Chile.
3%? Did I read it right? Shouldn't it something like 30%? I tried to look for more data about this vaccine and there is lot of different numbers. From what I found, efficiency of Sinovac vaccine is between 50% and 78% according to different researches.

Single dose efficiency of the Sinovac vaccine is 3%. The details are here:
https://qz.com/2018838/what-we-know-about-efficacy-of-sinopharm-sinovac-vaccines/

Quote
An April study from the University of Chile put the effectiveness of a single dose of Covid-19 vaccine at 3% for protecting against symptomatic infection, based on an examination of seven million vaccinated people.

Link from the journal article here: https://www.uchile.cl/noticias/174186/resultados-primer-estudio-de-efectividad-de-las-vacunas-en-chile

The efficacy after two doses of Sinovac was measured at 54% during the same study. Now compared to this, the one-dose efficacy is 61% for AstraZeneca, 92% for Pfizer, 79% for Sputnik V and 66% for Janssen.

If your Pfizer vaccine was available to everyone, then there was no need for us to take Sputnik V, right? The problem is that Pfizer has restricted their sales to rich countries, where they can sell their vaccine for $75 per individual. When Brazil and Argentina asked them for the supplies, Pfizer wanted the army bases and gold reserves of these countries as collateral in returns for the medicines. On the other hand, Russia provided a lot of poor nations with the Sputnik V vaccine. And the efficacy as per The Lancet is 92%, compared to 95% for the Pfizer vaccine.
That's not the case anymore. I think USA has ample Pfizer vaccine now and they are sending it to underdeveloped countries. I am from Pakistan and we have also receive a good quantity of Pfizer vaccine.
Pakistan to receive 13m Pfizer vaccines

Pakistan may receive Pfizer doses starting from Q4 2021. The vast majority of these doses will be delivered in 2022 and 2023. Most of the countries are not ready to wait for that long, and that is why they are going for other vaccines.
880  Economy / Economics / Re: African regulators warn cryptocurrencies may not be legitimate on: July 08, 2021, 01:43:07 PM
Who really cares about these "regulators"? Gone are the days when the governments could dictate each and every aspect of our lives. Whether someone should invest in cryptocurrency or not, is entirely up to him. The so called "regulators" are worried because their shitty fiat currencies are becoming worthless and no one want to invest in assets denominated in fiat. Nowadays the regimes are especially worried, because taking advantage of the pandemic situation they have resorted to unlimited printing of fiat cash.
