981  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Cryptocurrency financial pyramids on: October 24, 2022, 11:51:42 AM
I've heard people investigating scammers in the past have also noted that some franchise out their own software to other teams that are capable of using it for carrying out similar scams
I completely forgot about those when I made my previous post [thank you] and I'd blame the markets that allow such listings and registrars that do nothing in return [e.g. cough... Name... cough... cheap]!

how certain they are of their findings and how accurate they think they are might also be interesting - there could be more below the surface that haven't been detected
Not sure how they're detecting such scams in Russia, but in one of my countries [PH], they seem to be only counting or rather giving public announcements for those that already have some victims [in other words, the latter part of your quote goes unnoticed until some of the victims approach the right department to report it (users can't rely on the government to keep them safe].

It is somehow ironic that Satoshi creation, which main goal was to give an alternative to this crazy fiat money printing,  is now being used to print money and make financial pyramids.
I think I'm missing the point with regard to Bitcoin's contribution to printing money, but scams are happening in various forms and unfortunately, this is one of them.

~Snipped~
I do not follow all the scams, but in recent years there are really a lot of Internet scams in Russia.
Thank you for the provided links... Unfortunately, it seems to be rising in the past few years but it could also mean that the Russian government is doing a better job nowadays in identifying them.
982  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: List of useful Bitcoin block explorers on: October 24, 2022, 09:49:47 AM
A bit embarassing how Blockchain.com doesn't support Taproot addresses in its Block explorer...
It seems that they just silently added the support for Taproot addresses [the interesting part is the fact that you made this comment two weeks ago, and now it's here] Wink

Good news: Crystal explorer has decided to "indefinitely suspend" its operation [one less source for law enforcement agencies to spy on]!
983  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: [List] Gift cards providers on: October 24, 2022, 07:29:37 AM
I'm looking to buy a Netflix gift card and I've noticed the difference in prices between Bitrefill and Coinsbee. Bitrefill's prices seems reasonable, so I'll buy from it since OmegaStarScream vouched for it.
Both of them are good, but make sure to check or rather compare different values/amounts as well [results aren't always the same and it probably has something to do with their current supplies]:

e.g. If you get Netflix 70 BRL [screenshot]:
  • At the moment is 0.0007669 BTC on Coinsbee, while on Bitrefill is 0.00077504 BTC.
    • Even if we take into account the 1% reward on Bitrefill, it's still slightly cheaper on Coinsbee (I'm referring to this case only):
      0.00077504 - 1% reward (0.0000077504) = 0.0007672896BTC
984  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [LIST] T-Shirts/SOCCER TEAMS Sponsored by blockchain companies on: October 22, 2022, 12:28:05 PM
Even though I like seeing this gorgeous jersey on that list, it doesn't belong here [refer to the subject field and only suggest "soccer" teams that have blockchain-related kit sponsors] Smiley

what Is this team?
Here you go: TSM FTX 2022 Championship White Jersey
985  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano X Battery Pandemic on: October 22, 2022, 11:18:36 AM
Ledger sure has a problem with bad quality control in their factory (village garage).
IIRC, they didn't even have quality control in their "own" factory [I might be wrong, so don't quote me on that], but regardless of that, that's what users get for going with a brand that only cares how their product looks, as opposed to how it does work:

986  Local / Pamilihan / Re: Coins.ph Official Thread on: October 22, 2022, 07:23:36 AM
987  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: New and improved Trezor website on: October 21, 2022, 03:47:10 PM
But the new site states that Trezor has over 1 million customers.
Considering that Ledger had 5M+ sales already, I was expecting the number to be a bit higher for Trezor, but looks like I was wrong.

- According to their blog announcement, the Knowledgebase section is also new.
Is it just me or does it look similar to what ledger did with their "academy" section?

It appears that the number of "authorized resellers" has been slightly reduced!
988  Other / Archival / Re: Sinbad.io Mixer - secure, fast and easy to use on: October 21, 2022, 01:35:43 PM
Mixing code is needed when you actively use mixer, so to make sure that you don't receive your own bitcoins from previous mixings.
I should've been clearer [my bad]... I knew the usage of mixing codes, but I meant to ask what happens when your pre-mixer reserve finishes? Sooner or later you're going to rely on the funds gathered through the mixing service itself... Am I right?
- I'm trying to point out how that could directly/indirectly link your users together.
989  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2022-10-19] Europe to ban crypto mining this winter on: October 21, 2022, 11:08:35 AM
the Commission strongly requests to lower the electricity consumption of crypto players,... up to stop crypto mining... In another word, shut down your ASICS immediately.
~Snipped~
Quote
in line with the proposed Council Regulation on an emergency intervention to address high energy prices. In case, there is a need for load shedding in the electricity systems, the Member States must also be ready to stop crypto-assets mining.
Judging by how they used load shedding in the sentence, I believe it's just a temporary precaution against the situation in question and not something that'd completely halt mining operations, so perhaps it's not as bad as it looks [having said that, there'll be collateral damages for sure].

What do they mean by standardization bodies, could this be another agency to tackle regulation?
Here you go Smiley
990  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Good News: Bitcoin Achieves Guinness World Record Titles on: October 21, 2022, 08:12:28 AM
Regardless of it not being the sole addition, I still enjoyed seeing it in GWR but the person who's responsible for publishing it, didn't bother to check multiple sources:

Archived version of First decentralized cryptocurrency
  • e.g.
    • In the first paragraph, it stated that the whitepaper was published on 18 August 2008, but that's actually the date for registering bitcoin.org!
    • In the third paragraph, they put nodes and miners in the same category, but we all know there's a big difference between the two!
991  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Cryptocurrency financial pyramids on: October 21, 2022, 06:09:13 AM
"The Central Bank of Russia revealed 782 cryptocurrency financial pyramids
~Snipped~
Are there a lot of scams in your countries too?
Yes, we've got lots of those as well, but not to that extent... It's worth noting that the real number is actually smaller than what they've reported simply because of the fact that most scammers tend to create multiple websites and just use the same skin or rather theme/template with little to no change!
- It'd be interesting to also see the results for previous years.
992  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Japan to allow exchanges list coins under lessen rules on: October 20, 2022, 03:52:47 PM
and has they lessen these rules will these not lead to scams
Considering that there are a lot of creative scammers out there, no matter how tight/loose those rules are, they'll always find a way to do their thing [unfortunately]!

I'm a bit surprised that the government of Japan has decided to open the gates to more issues, in exchange for profits:

  • Lure in crypto exchanges with relaxed listing rules [most exchanges charge for it] > More crypto exchanges acquiring licenses [more money for them]
993  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: BTC mining farm - Argentina - We are looking for investors on: October 20, 2022, 02:22:22 PM
I want to say that our website does not administer or manage the cryptocurrencies that we mine.
The website is for business only.

The cryptocurrencies are stored offline and the earnings of the users are not paid through the website, but the earnings are paid to the wallet of each user.

This is to prevent hacking of the website.
Thank you for the clarification and it's good that you went with the cold storage route, but I don't understand why you're not allowing them to manage their mined cryptocurrencies through your website [I'm not a developer by any means but AFAIK, it doesn't require you to have everything on a hot wallet]!
- The way I see it, it has more to do with the fees (you can easily add a reasonable withdrawal fee if that's the issue).
994  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: How to monetize a cryptocurrency website? on: October 20, 2022, 06:52:16 AM
I have a website about cryptocurrencies which is this: https://cryptodev.tech/ and I would like how I could monetize it. adsense? Affiliates?
Since your website is new and targeted toward Spanish speakers, do what @OmegaStarScream suggested, and instead of Adsense, try to combine it with one of "these advertising networks [I do know Adsense is also included on this list, but I wouldn't suggest using it at this stage]".
Note: Make sure your ad blocker isn't "on" to view the list!
995  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 7 tips from cybercrime experts to stop hackers in their tracks on: October 19, 2022, 12:01:25 PM
  • Enable two-factor authentication on online accounts wherever possible.
In addition to what @tranthidung said, it's worth noting that depending on the type of 2FA someone uses, it might give them a false sense of security [e.g. SIM jacking for those that use SMS 2FA]!

it's better to use a separate PC to browse online and do all things that are not information sensitive like bank account details or crypto wallets, I believe this is better because you can never tell, even if hackers find a way into your PC they won't find any useful information that can hurt you.
There are two issues with this:

  • Some users can't afford to have a separate PC for other stuff.
  • AFAICR, nothing can stop hackers from infiltrating other computers if all of them are connected to the same network.
996  Local / Pamilihan / Re: Coins.ph Official Thread on: October 19, 2022, 09:54:50 AM
Just a thought guys what you think kasi most ng mga wallet right now is gumagamit ng mga card na din tulad ng gcash at paymaya what if gumamit nadin si coins.ph ng kanilang card para at the same time is sumasabay sila sa trend ng cryptocurrency at actually nauna na nga sila sa gcash pero ngayon mas mabilis ang innovation ng paymaya kesa sa kanila just what if lang or possible kaya ito mangyari?.
Sa pagkakaalam ko, wala silang problema sa pag issue ng cards dahil may mga license na sila [e.g. EMI license under the name DCPay], pero considering na napaka higpit nila, I doubt maraming gagamit sa card nila dahil nothing stops them from suddenly freezing it!
997  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2022-06-17] Bitcoin mining becomes unprofitable as BTC price falls on: October 19, 2022, 08:10:58 AM
Why risk $13 million in an industry with declining revenues?
Even though that's the case with some of the miners, I don't think the same can be said with most manufacturers, and on top of that, if they can capitalize on the situation to come up with a really efficient chip at a reasonable or rather better price compared to their competition, then they can create a great gap between them and the rest [even as a newcomer and that surely leads to significant profits].
998  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: The price of your bitcoin depends on hardware wallets offered on the market. on: October 18, 2022, 08:18:52 PM
When they cannot use bitcoins they don't want bitcoins.
The fact that they've tried and failed is a clear indication that they actually wanted it, but due to some limitations, they couldn't use it!

2. Does the wallet look ugly and cheap? Bad wallet! Because boys and girls in school and high school will not show off such a wallet for each other.
If you don't warn your child about the various risks of flashing such things in public, then that makes you a bad parent!

3. Does it not have a large touch screen?
Bad wallet! Because your drunk neighbour will be unable to pay with bitcoins for his whisky.
Without considering the security aspect of the situation, if I were drunk, it'd probably be easier for me to operate a HW with physical buttons than the one with the large touch screen!

and then YOUR OWN BITCOIN will not grow in price!
Instead of being fixated on nonsensical stuff, please take a minute to familiarize yourself with other aspects of Bitcoin [the current or future price of Bitcoin doesn't define its "real" value]!

A good HW:
~Snipped~
I'm surprised you didn't mention anything about its security!

No bugs!
Can you name a single HW out there that never had such a thing?
999  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2022-10-04] US Sen. Cynthia Lummis 'I Love That Bitcoin Can't Be Stopped' on: October 17, 2022, 06:34:19 PM
"For people in foreign countries that are living in places that are very insecure, that is definitely a backstop and something that they can comfortably go to bed at night and know it’s going to be there in the morning," the senator opined.
I did enjoy reading almost everything that she said, except for the part where she implied it's safe or rather nothing bad could happen to it and that gives the wrong impression to both newcomers & tech-illiterate users that no matter how you store it, it's going to be impenetrable [all of us know that's not true]!
1000  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: New York and its very complicated Bitlicense on: October 17, 2022, 04:10:48 PM
Is there any way/hope that they will reform the regulations to make the requirements easier to comply with?
I don't think so... Despite reading "this [refer to the "NEW DEVELOPMENTS" section]", I still can't think of an instance where they actually made life easier for BitLicense holders [e.g. I couldn't find the exact thread, but there was a user on this forum that mentioned he spent more to gather & fulfill the requirements than he paid for the application fee] and "this" is one of their recent additions.
