1401  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Can HW manufacturers get user info through their apps? on: March 16, 2022, 11:32:02 AM
- What kind of information can HW producers get about the users of their apps?
IP (and hence location)? Information about funds (history of balance, transactions, addresses)? Something else?
Here's what those two brands you mentioned earlier are saying about the type of information that they collect on their apps [the above users are correct]:

If you bought the device from a reseller/official distributor, there is now an additional party that knows you.
That's true, but it's a different story if they paid in cash [without giving their names].

Ledger Live uses its own servers, so the same rules apply there as well. I don't have a Trezor, but I assume it's the same thing.
As a Trezor user, I can confirm that's also the case, but it's going to change soon.

Update:
Refer to "this post" for more information...
1402  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Multiple Electrum Wallets? on: March 16, 2022, 09:46:54 AM
And if so, can I still access my old electrum wallet with the same password?
AFAIK, there's no restriction in Electrum for re-using the same password for multiple wallets, but no matter how safe you think your PC is, it's still a very bad practice!

It will never be linked if they don't have transactions to each other which er know that the address linked they had previous transactions.
Depending on the servers that you connect to, this might not always be the case.
1403  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: where to spend my bitcoins in new york city? on: March 15, 2022, 10:12:07 PM
I'm traveling to NYC and would like community referrals about restaurants, bars and other places where i can pay my expenses with BTC.
In addition to the above maps, there are a few more that might come in handy:
Note: I don't know how accurate they are.

1404  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: BETFLIP.IO - scam - 5.5 ETH on: March 15, 2022, 07:31:48 PM
Screenshot of the last chat with the support:

https://pasteboard.co/P6xdGQowDGYj.png
Thank you for providing a screenshot... I have no doubt they created that platform to scam their users but unfortunately, I don't think your SS "clearly" shows the part I quoted in my previous post.
- I wanted to report them to their registrar but considering that it's "Namecheap", they tend to ignore most of the reports that don't have concrete proof.

  • Do you have anything else that clearly connects the dots?
    - If you do, then please update your first post with the following "Scam Report Format".
1405  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: cygan's 'Crypto Word Jumble Game and Get Merits 1.0' on: March 15, 2022, 06:42:23 PM
i took the rules from my last game and unfortunately didn't delete the one point you mentioned - thanks for pointing that out. it's been corrected now Smiley

btw diamond hands is correct - 1 merit won!

and you are also right here ... i forgot to add a second 'e' ... maybe you know the correct word also Cheesy
- You're very welcome Smiley
- Thank you Smiley
- I do know the correct word [thanks to your confirmation], but I want to give others a chance to solve it Smiley
1406  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: cygan's 'Crypto Word Jumble Game and Get Merits 1.0' on: March 15, 2022, 04:40:37 PM
5.   if no one can guess the correct word/words, i will add a few more letters.
Are you sure the bolded part still applies to this game? Grin

I'm going to just solve one of them [like in your previous game]:

5. maindod nasdh -
Diamond hands

2. rtosmsdane -
I think it's missing another letter "e" Wink
- I could be wrong...
1407  Other / Meta / Re: Save your nice merit records here - LAST UPDATE: 06/11/2021 on: March 15, 2022, 03:18:13 PM
While I was scrolling through my archives, I remember that I was supposed to comment on this thread back in February, but for some reason, I didn't...

- Archived
- I had a nice post count as well Smiley

1408  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: FCA(UK) - cryptoasset activity in the UK on: March 15, 2022, 01:10:21 PM
It seems the FCA are clamping down on all……… “UK businesses that appear to be carrying on cryptoasset activity that are not registered with the FCA for anti-money laundering purposes.”
It looks like they've been doing it for the "past year or two", but I'm wondering why it took them this long to act against BTMs [it's strange]?

Here is a full list of all ….”UK businesses that appear to be carrying on cryptoasset activity that are not registered with the FCA for anti-money laundering purposes.”
https://register.fca.org.uk/s/search?predefined=U
I believe you meant to copy/paste "this" one instead Smiley

Personally I would advise anyone who has had dealings with any of these companies to get in touch with them asap, especially if they are holding any crypto and/or FIAT of yours. These companies may just disappear into the ether.
I checked some of them at random and from the ones that are still active, almost all of them seem to be fake/scam websites!
1409  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: BETFLIP.IO - scam - 5.5 ETH on: March 15, 2022, 10:05:44 AM
Now they say i should make a deposit 1 ETH to be able to withdraw my first deposit (1 ETH). I think everyone understands that they will steal this money too.
You're correct [unfortunately]... That's a known tactic among scammers and despite seeing multiple warnings on this forum [e.g. #1, #2, #3 and #4], would you mind posting a piece of evidence that clearly shows the above line [AFAICS, none of the other threads have posted any proof so far]?
1410  Local / Pilipinas / Re: Blockchain Convention 2022 on: March 14, 2022, 08:29:47 PM
^ Naunhan mo ako sa pag-update.
Sorry, since there were only a few more days left bago magsimula ang event at wala akong nakitang post tungkol sa "last week's new speakers", I thought I should probably bump it with an update Tongue

Sa totoo lang, medyo concern ako dahil madaming mga Pinoy NFT projects na din ang nasira.
Ngayon ko lang nalaman na may mga failed "Pinoy NFT projects", but I'm not surprised dahil the same thing is unfortunately happening [or happened] with a lot of foreign NFT projects [pansin ko lately, maraming developers ang nag ra-rush sa NFT projects, like what we had with ICOs back in 2017].
- The main issue with most of these failed NFT projects is the fact that they just want a piece of the pie!
1411  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Which hardware wallets are open source? on: March 14, 2022, 06:16:55 PM
two types just like every other PC and mobile wallets,
Technically, there are also custodial and non-custodial variations... Depending on how you use/keep your funds with certain apps [in HW], the former could also apply to your HW [e.g. staking]!

I believe Trezor hardware wallet is 100% open source and highly secure, with a similar level of security to hardware wallets such as the Ledger Nano S
It's worth noting that both Trezor models don't have "secure elements" while Ledger models aren't "fully" open-source.

Could it be that Trezor or other HW brand puts one piece of software on public display, but installs a completely different one on their devices? Is it possible to implement it in such a way that it cann't be verified?
In addition to @witcher_sense's comment, we have multiple sources that check if they're reproducible or not [SS of the HW section]:
Note: It doesn't mean they're 100% safe, but it's a good start!

1412  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Square is considering making a hardware wallet for Bitcoin on: March 14, 2022, 03:17:28 PM
I've just seen that Block's hardware wallet will also have fingerprint sensor.
We’re building a wallet that will be easy to use for everyone.
Honestly, I'm quite disappointed at how this so-called hardware wallet is shaping up... Based on the @o_e_l_e_o's post, it seems that there are no preventive measures for anything that's below the chosen limit, and considering that there are various ways of cloning the fingerprints [and other ways of acquiring it (e.g. by force)], this just introduces a lot of other risks to the equation.

I really want to vote "+ [even though few of them actually merited my post]", but it wouldn't be fair to suddenly change the rules at this point!

I'm sorry that you have to spend time on such things while there's an ongoing invasion in your country [shame on those who are contributing to this drama in a negative way, SMH]!

1414  Local / Pilipinas / Re: Blockchain Convention 2022 on: March 14, 2022, 11:07:04 AM
Just stumbled upon "this blog post" at napansin ko na naglabas pala sila ng ilan pang speakers sa website nila [hindi pa final yung list ng speakers nila]:

  • Angeline Viray [CEO at Co-founder ng Ark of Dreams]
  • Jason Dela Rosa [founder ng Ark of Dreams]
  • Igneus Terrenus [head of communications ng ByBit]

Magagaling ba sila?
1415  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Gate.io banned some countries on: March 13, 2022, 07:35:36 PM
It seems weird to see the US, Syria, Iran and China on the same list though
I'm more surprised at seeing Canada in there...

Not sure how accurate the info is but regardless, does anyone knows how is it possible that the KYC was mandatory and at the same time, they still served users from Iran, Syria, and Cuba when no other exchange could?
AFAICR, they've stopped offering services to two of these countries a few years back, so I strongly believe the above tweet is slightly inaccurate!

I just "saw a few other countries" when I'm visiting their website, but at the same time, there's also "this [archived]".
1416  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: US Capital Gains - Unknown Sale Price and Date on: March 13, 2022, 01:31:10 PM
However, what is the technique when the purchase price -more exactly, the cost basis-  is known but the sale price and date are not? Let's say that I got 0.01 BTC for $500 in 2021 and I'm sure that I sold it later during the year, but don't know when or for how much. How do I calculate the gain?
Based on everything you presented, I'm guessing you were keeping it in a wallet that didn't belong to an exchange [regardless of its nature]... I believe you can still find the missing information [date and its price at the time of sale] by connecting the dots on an "explorer [look where the output of the first transaction was used as an input]".
1417  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2022-03-11]The legendary investor spoke about the future of bitcoin on: March 13, 2022, 11:55:15 AM
A Legendary Investor Just Predicted The End Of The U.S. Dollar
~Snipped~
but cautioning governments likely won't allow bitcoin to be used as an alternative.
Despite knowing him for less than a year, I've noticed most of his so-called predictions are either pure nonsense or things that are bound to happen [nothing special about them]:

"Now if Washington does not like you, they put sanctions on you and you cannot use U.S. dollars."
That's not entirely correct! When it comes to individuals, they'd be partially affected [I don't want to get into the details on this thread, but depending on the situation, there might be a workaround].
- FYI, I'm currently residing in a country that's been heavily sanctioned by Uncle Sam, so I'm speaking from experience!

creating a decentralized community to support victims of recent and future conflicts.

Through social networks and modern tools like Skype, Zoom, Gmaps etc
Regardless of how you raise and send funds, I don't think you should be calling a community that'll use centralized tools, a decentralized one.

Please do not include politics or religion in this topic.

Would you mind telling us what would be your own role in this project [apart from giving the idea in question]?

Admins, is it possible to share this topic in multiple categories like services, economics and politics & society?
I'm not an admin, but here's the answer to your question:

  • 12. No duplicate posting in multiple boards (except for re-posting topics in the local language boards if they're translated and re-posting marketplace topics in the altcoin boards if altcoins are accepted).
1419  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano S Plus on: March 12, 2022, 07:28:23 PM
As long as the person knows what they are doing, it's not a bad thing. If you are a developer, I assume this feature would allow you to create your own app for a coin that is not supported on Ledger for example. Or you can create something you think works better. This is of course an advanced feature and not something ordinary people should play around with.
I agree with everything you said, but I'm afraid this might be used by hackers to silently install spyware [or something else] when it's plugged in [assuming that somehow they'd find a way to bypass the security checks or confirmations].
- Maybe I'm just paranoid...

Why no Trezor for example? Should be in a similar price range.

I would generally advise against any product from this brand; they showed time and time again that these devices aren't made to last - both physically and in software. They are also made with subpar materials and quality control, so I don't feel confident recommending Nono S or S Plus or whatever else they are going to release next.
I already have a Trezor One, but I wanted to get another wallet [without breaking the bank] as a collectible item [and maybe for occasional uses].
- Unfortunately, you're right about their problems [I would've ignored them if it was going to be my first and only hardware wallet].
1420  Economy / Goods / Re: Bitcoin Core Coffee Table on: March 12, 2022, 05:30:05 PM
Yeah so each panel is laser Engraved, Im curious to know what anyone here would be interested in paying for a piece like this. I obviously have a figure in BTC I would want but just curious.
Thank you for clarifying it... Since it's a rare or rather one-of-a-kind item, I think a 100% to 150% markup would be ideal [other users might have a different opinion about such items, so I'd suggest moving this thread to the "Collectibles" board instead].

- Move button is on the bottom left corner of the page.
- Read "this thread" before moving it to that board.
