As promised, here is the pricelist for exhibitors at Bitcoin2014 in A'dam:

http://www.pdf-archive.com/2014/02/26/euros-bitcoin2014sponsorshipandexhibitoropportunities1/

Hosted with Pdf-Archive, hope it works OK for everyone.

Main Bitcoin2014 site:
http://bitcoin2014.com/

Looks to me like we want to take the €1500 'Contributing Sponsor' package or the €1100 'Exhibitor' package.

evil: I already submitted one text to the Forbes, Wired, New York times, The guardian, etc... still no reply, but people must try Cheesy

keep at it, man. This is the sort of thing that will get thrown in as a small filler piece on slow news days, so it may get coverage today or in a months time.
There is a good chance that some news sources will just treat it as a joke (both the crypto and the life extension) but there is no such thing as bad publicity.
I'll try tipping some more of the UK press, see if they will roll with it.

More A'dam conference info coming very soon, btw.
1663  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Nxt marketing & promotion :: Nxt now on Coinpayments on: February 26, 2014, 02:15:22 PM

Bloody hell, klee, that is some serious donation. And right to a very, very cutting-edge technology. We definitely need to get this worked into our marketing  material........and maybe push this to the mainstream press.
"Crypto millionaire wants to live forever" could be one headline......it's the kind of action that could play well with the mainstream.

This needs to go beyond the small world of crypto, in any case. Anyone got some ideas for mainstream coverage?

Final Draft Of Texas Bitcoin Conference Brochure

http://www.scribd.com/doc/209289198/NXT-Brochure-Draft

This goes to the printer in Austin in 36 hours.  Anybody have any comments to tell me I've said something stupid, please tell me now.

The website new2nxt.com is live and it's mine.  I will clean it up during the rest of the week and over the weekend.  I intend for it to be (yet another) newbie site to find info and links on how to get started with NXT.

Thank you, donor who shall remain forever nameless, for funding the printing of these brochures.

The NXT community is full of REALLY GREAT people.

Hi Rickyjames

First of all, thanks for your work.

I quickly flew over the text and it seems good to me (no details checked, but it is mainly marketing anyway).

But what I don't like is the design: too many colors, too many different fonts in too many sizes.
I'm not a graphic artist/designer or the like, but the overall layout looks a little tacky, at least to me.

There are several designers in the NXT community, maybe someone can give you better input, maybe even do some quick magic on the layout.

Cheers, LiQio

@rickyjames: got to agree with LiQio. Too many colours.
I'll have a quick proof read of the text in the next couple of hours, and get that back to u.
Any friendly graphics dudes want to have a go at cleaning up the layout?

Conference call:

Just got tipped by SalsaCz that the site is up for Amsterdam Bitcoin Conference:

http://bitcoin2014.com/

We have until March 15 to register for early bird tickets.
I would like to have some real heavy hitters from NXT at the conference, because there will be some serious players at the conference and NXT needs to put on a good show.
Any volunteers ?

Before anyone points at me: I'm enthusiastic about NXT (and crypto in general) but I don't yet have the depth of NXT knowledge and understanding needed to impress serious industry players. I'm learning fast, though.
We need a headliner, I can play support for the event.

Any ideas, get posting.

Salsa/marketing committee candidates/anyone else with cash:start thinking about budgets, and whether we would be better buying tickets early (with NXT/crypto low right now) or wait until closer to the event with maybe then a better NXT/BTC/fiat relationship.

I'm gonna start a game here.  Which is probably a mistake.  Play along if you like.

This page is my

BIRTH YEAR

and blue is my favorite color.
Wow, you're pretty old. My birth year page is not for two more pages. Grin

Easy buddy, RickyJ has been known to terminate for much less.

And I thought I was an old grumpy bastard......my birth year is gonna be in 11 pages and my favourite colour (well, the only colour) is black........

That's still pretty old for a geek. I started back in punched card days. I am ancient as far as sysadmins go.

I remember getting excited about Win 95 and our departments first ever (single-speed) cd-burner. And don't get me started on that Y2K thing....
1668  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: February 25, 2014, 11:51:56 PM
I feel the need to weigh in again on the forging rewards debate:

We do not need to change the current forging setup.
Forging right now is completely fair. Everyone who forges gets a small percentage increase in their NXT holdings, in the form of tx fees.
You must remember that NXT is (as rickyjames keeps telling us) a zero-sum game. There are only one billion (minus a few) coins in existence. Forging does not make new NXT, just moves the old NXT around.

Pools will make it easier for smallholders to keep their forging power online, but will make absolutely no difference to earnings thru forging.

(This brings me to the 1st gen/2nd gen thing...more on that later)
Forging will only provide a sizeable income if/when we have a large amount of NXT transactions, which will only happen if NXT is in wide-scale adoption as a 1st generation crypto (ie, pay, move, store, invest, use like money).
Even then, forging will never give the dramatic gains that some people seem to expect.

But we need to encourage a healthy network: lots of NXT nodes, big, small, forging, non-forging, it all helps.
The easiest way to do this is to implement a rewards scheme running alongside forging, but one that rewards setting up and running a node:   Jl777's NodeCoin plan, in other words.

TL:DR
Reward nodes, listen to jl777, do not fuck around with forging.

Back to the 1st Gen/2nd Gen thing: some people have expressed the opinion that NXT should completely skip the whole idea of being a successful 1st Gen crypto (ie pay, move, store, invest) in favour of going straight to concentrating on being a 2nd Gen crypto (AE, AM, DACS, colored coins, games....etc).

Good idea but if NXT is a success as a 1st gen currency:
We will have lots of money to spend on setting up 2nd gen features/DACS.
We will have a large user base ready to invest in and adopt 2nd gen features.
We will have a much higher profile in the crypto and wider worlds.

We can't expect to just go from zero to successful 2nd gen without first succeeding as a 1st gen. I can't see it happening.....
Correct me if i'm wrong, but all other 2nd gen cryptos are either stuck in development hell or riding on the back of Bitcoin, a successful 1st gen currency.  See where I'm going with this ?

Last 1st gen vs 2nd gen point: assuming that we have 15,000 unique NXT users (number out of my head) , how many of those people are capable of doing effective development work on the 2nd gen features ?  5% ? 10% ? 20% ?
But everyone can participate in making NXT a success on the 1st gen level, simply thru marketing, encouraging adoption, and actually helping to build a 1st gen eco-system thru trading and use.

I'm not saying stop work on 2nd gen, I am saying that more of us should concentrate on getting the 1st gen basics of NXT right, while the big brain/serious dev skills dudes can build the fairy castles in the sky that will make us all rich.

Hopefully......

People, please don't use third party websites to check hashes. It defeats the purpose of the hash.

If you're using Windows, download this to check the hashes easily and quickly. It's open source and free:

http://code.kliu.org/hashcheck/

+10, use hashcheck, it rules.

1671  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT Funding Committee Candidate Statements on: February 25, 2014, 02:19:04 AM
EvilDave as candidate for the NXTinfrastructurefund.

Who the f*** is EvilDave:

I'm an ancient geezer, originally Anglo-Irish, but living in Amsterdam for the last 20 years.
Over the course of my chequered career I've:
trained as a lab technician/research scientist, worked in a whiskey bottling plant, barman, DJ'ed, washed dishes, co-ordinated free festivals, trained people to ride motorcycles, worked as courier on bikes/cars/vans, 1st and 2nd line helldesk, junior network admin, and a few others.
Should be a writer, that lot will look good on a book bio. I'm currently winding up one classic car related business and starting on a major restoration project, as well as diving head first into the crypto scene.

My computer skills are reasonable, if a bit out of date. Got a good spread of skills, not much depth. I am an all-rounder, with the emphasis on hardware and networking. And shouting at users.....working helldesk is not good for your view of humanity.

What have u ever done for NXT:

Much too much forum time, lots of blah about NXT and some troll hunting.
Some general NXT promo activities.
Lots of noisy support for NXT.

Set up and maintained VPS and private nodes

Helping out with Amsterdam Bitcoin Conference.

Made a proposal for a green, zero-emissions structure for NXT using carbon-offset credits.

Designed / printed some NXT promo stickers. (Some still available if ya want them !) Want to do more on the NXT merchandise front.

There might be a few other things, but thats all the important stuff.

What will you do as a NXTinfrastructurefund committee member ?

TBH, not very much. the role of the committee is (as i see it) to simply decide on the best use of our available funds and green-light (or red-light) projects that will help NXT.
This means that my role will be to listen to proposals from the NXT community, and make decisions based on the feedback from the community.
I'm not going to be try and force my personal agenda onto NXT, but I'll obviously be slightly biased towards plans that do fit with that agenda.

What agenda, Evil One?

My number one priority as NXT-ISF commitee dude,  is to make sure that one of the most basic elements of NXT, the network infrastructure, is the best that it can be. We need to have a solid base for further development and to make sure that NXT can be used reliably 24/7/52.

My personal ambition, very much in second place, for NXT would be to be able to take advantage of green marketing by making NXT as energy-efficient as possible, but I have to emphasise that if I need to choose between functionality or green-ness, I'll choose functionality without hesitation.

Thats the end.
Vote for me. Or not...I'll not be offended if I don't get on.
1672  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: February 25, 2014, 02:14:02 AM
My last handful of points before I get to go to bed, go to work, kids, etc....:

NXT is still doing well, especially if u look at the disaster zone that is the crypto market right now.

A core point of BCnexts slightly mysterious plan is that NXT needs to first succeed as a first generation crypto-currency (ie, buy stuff, trade, invest securely, transfer money) before it can then leverage that success to become a second generation currency (Asset Exchange, DACs, colored coins, games, secure blockchain storage, contract enforcement...etc).

I think that NXT is running ahead of itself, and we need to step back a little bit and concentrate on the first gen stuff for a while.
This doesn't mean dropping any of the work on the second generation features.
The guys developing all of the second gen stuff should absolutely carry on, but the rest of us should concentrate on these areas right now:

Promoting NXT as an complete alternative to Bitcoin and it's clones. Different code, none of Bitcoins current issues.

Getting merchants on board. Payment solutions. Sell stuff....

More big exchanges, more trading. Cryptsy and BTC38, as priority.

Network infrastructure/rewards for running nodes. Network statistics...TPS capacity?

If we can boost these first gen aspects of NXT, we will end up in a much better position to launch NXTs second generation features on an unsuspecting world.

Almost the last point: Buy stickers! Support NXTs merchant eco-system !
https://nextcoin.org/index.php/topic,4181.0.html

Really last point: I'm now serious about being a candidate for the NXT infrastructure committee:

NXT FUNDING COMMITTEE VOTE IS COMING MARCH 1

Remaining eligible nominees with as-yet undeclared intentions (PM me if you want off this list):

^[GS]^, 2Kool4Skewl, Arckam_(frmelin), bitcoinpaul,  buybitcoinscanada
ChuckOne, Cointropolis_JustabitTime, Come-from-Beyond
Damelon, davethetrousers, drevil,  EvilDave, ferment, Fry, hughmanwho, Jean-Luc,

nexern, opticalcarrier, Pandaisftw,  PeercoinEnthusiast, pinarello, Pouncer,  Ricot, salsacz
SecondLeo, smaragda,  Uniqueorn, VanBreuk,  ZeroTheGreat

Something Zahlen said:  A candidate does not need to be good at writing English. Some candidates may not have English as their mother tongue. If you're voting, don't confuse lots of writing for ability to judge the worth of a project. Remember that ultimately the committee's job is to decide which projects get funded.

If you are on this list and want to be on a NXT funding committee, go here:

NXTtechdevfund: EmoneyRu, Anon136, l8orre, abuelau
NXTinfrastructurefund: rickyjames, chanc3r

Yeah, you may have seen this before.  I'll be putting it up every ten pages or so.  It's one of those "legitimate, transparent process" things.

Saved u the trouble, RJ.
So, yeah,  put me down as a candidate for infrastructure.
I'll post the reasons to vote for me (apart from my winning smile) on the committee thread after i get some sleep and go to work.....about 16 hours from now, i guess.

Sooooo, recap of this afternoon:

I spent over four hours telling explaining Nxt and telling stories about the community to the designers/marketing guys and they love it!

It was a very productive meeting and I will dump all marketing material to them today and tomorrow, so they can sort through it.

They loved the logo, by the way.

We will have some rough drafts for you guys to comment on middle of the week, to get the ball rolling.

They immediately caught on to the fact it's an ecosystem and not a coin and how to focus on that.

So, three new community members, who i hope to introduce together with their work soon. Smiley

Nice work, D.
Couple of conferencey points:
I'm still ignoring the March BTC conference in A'dam, but the organiser is putting together some Bitcoin meetups in makerspaces and cafes here in NL.
Just got a mail from him (Bas de Lange, btw) asking if I can give a talk at a meetup on Thursday:
http://bitcoinobserver.com/news/2014-02-12-Ethereum-Bitcoin-Amsterdam-Meetup-ZB45-Makerspace.html
Ignoring my lousy presentation skills and lack of in-depth crypto knowledge, I simply can't be there. Made a commitment to another project that I can't get out of.....

Any one else feel like stepping up and heading on over ?

I think it would also be a good idea for the A'dam/NL NXT posse to actually hook up sometime soon in the real world, before the May conference is upon us. Ideas?

I'm still pimping the stickers, btw:
https://nextcoin.org/index.php/topic,4181.msg39152.html#msg39152

Edit: last point: I'm still not getting any replies to my mails to the A'dam Bitcoin Foundation conference organiser. Maybe she doesn't like the cut of my jib, or she's snowed under with work.....don't know.
Any one else want to contact them, please give it a go:

2036840723237273850, thanks a lot!

But please hold on, I didn't yet do anything useful   Smiley

So start.....what can u do?

And to anyone and everyone sitting on the sidelines: GET INVOLVED !

Every small contribution helps.
If u want to actively help NXT:  get off yr ass, look around, find somewhere u can help and dive on in.
Don't hang back because u might not want to look foolish or make a mistake.
No one here is perfect, (except me, of course), just do your best.
Surely, no one sitting on the sidelines can resist such an invitation. One humble question: does translating around 500 wiki entries count as an involvement?

My remark about "anything useful" meant that I'm really interesting in constructing a reasonable math model to estimate probabilities of a successful attack on the network, but didn't yet advance too much on this.

ooopsss.......maybe I should have been a little less blunt.
Yes, 500 wiki entries counts.
Sorry, I took your "I didnt yet do anything useful"post at face value, didn't mean to tread on your toes.
My call to arms was really intended as a general shout out to anyone and everyone who is on the bench right now.
So i'll apply a quick edit......good work with the Wiki and the brain-melting math, btw.

Please run for infrastructure committee! These are some cool ideas. We might get emergent behavior from a self-organizing network.

Thanks James.
This is the stuff I know from my time in telco and real time finance and am interested in (apart from Nxtopia  Cheesy)...
I thought this stuff was techdev because its software, but if its infrastructure I'll drop ricky a note about switching although I think that group already has some strong and well respected candidates.

I second that, otherwise I might have to put myself up as candidate for infrastructure committee.
(I'm not joking, can't let RJ be supreme lord of infrastructure all by his ownsome)

1678  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: February 24, 2014, 10:08:47 PM

Really. As the creator of the currency, I can say that I would only sell any coins that I mined or purchased and that the coins that have been created by issuing, but not yet mined are off limits. I can enforce this with peer nodes verifying the balance 24/7. Any violation of this would destroy the coin. It could also be possible to use AT savings account to release the coins in a predictable and controlled fashion. That would reduce the risk to just the current batch that is being released could be misappropriated.

I think we should lend more energy and thought to this line of reasoning as it really does solve the problem of securing the network while also creating a new market at the same time.

And even if the coin fails we can always create another and another and another similar coin until we get it right.

Hate to be definitive, but this is the answer.
Leave forging as it is, reward running a node and contributing.
Get the mining community on board, give them a small, guaranteed income from NxtNodeCoin (or whatever) in exchange for running NRS nodes.
NXT stakeholders will still continue to forge, either solo or in pools, particularly when TX revenues start to ramp up,  but this will also encourage people who never even thought of using NXT to get on board.
1679  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: February 24, 2014, 05:24:17 PM
Below u'll find a short description of the Nxt communication system. This is the 2nd plan of our decentralization. 1st one you can find here.

hours and hours of communication

Did you ever send a copy of the signed form to Steven?

Did you fill it and sent it to Steven?

So, no, I did not send the form in to Steven.  I did not know I was supposed to.

  Cheesy

Wonder if I can get the above exchange printed on a t-shirt: We're so de-centralised that.....

Still, looks like it will work out in the end:

rickyjames: print the form, fill the form, scan the form, send it to Stephen Smiley Nifty was also in a phone contact with Paul, so lets wait for his news too
Done.  I am in email contact with Nifty too.

And back to the forging/running nodes issue:

I'm not technical. So you can ignore me if I say something stupid.

Isn't it possible to build something on top of NXT that can be more profitable for the forgers around us to keep the network safe?

I thought James was experimenting with such a coin earlier.

jl777 (and others) came up with the idea of rewarding people who run nodes with a colored "nodecoin", issued based on node running time.
This sidesteps the issue of forging income only going to the big fish, by also rewarding little fish who choose to run a node to help maintain the NXT network.

I know that we need to move away from the mining mindset as much as possible for NXT, but we also need to encourage network growth.
As a NXT node costs almost nothing to run (in terms of computing resources) compared to mining,  we could maybe in this way also persuade miners to run NXT nodes on their mining rigs in addition to their current mining activities.....everyone wins.

And to J-L, Pin, CfB and anyone else with an opinion...should we move to 8.0/8.1 now?

And I'm going to repeat my request for someone to step up and carry out a comprehensive audit of the NXT network:

Can someone step up and carry out a (semi-) comprehensive audit of the NXT network ?
What do we have up and running right now?
