Last minute opportunity to attend/give talk Ethereum/Bitcoin meetup in Amsterdam.
Thursday 27 Feb!

Like it says above, just had a mail from Bas de Lange (Bitcoin meetup organiser) asking if I'd be interested in giving a talk this week at this meetup event:

http://bitcoinobserver.com/news/2014-02-12-Ethereum-Bitcoin-Amsterdam-Meetup-ZB45-Makerspace.html

I'm not going to be even slightly available, (and i dont think that I have the presentation skills or NXT in-depth knowledge needed).
Might be useful to attend, though,  if there any A'dam/NL NXT'ers interested.

If you're up for it, u can either PM me and/or get in touch with Bas directly.

On the network nodes/bandwidth/forging question:

Can someone audit the entire NXT network over the next few days and come up with some solid information/statistics about what we actually have running right now?  I can get estimates from PeerExplorer  / NRS, but more in-depth info would be good.
Public/private nodes, forging or not, VPS or stand-alone...estimates of current transaction capacity ( ? TPS)and power consumption would also be nice.
Once we know what we actually have, and how well it performs, we can move on to plan for what we need.

Any NXT dudes with  the required skills want to volunteer?

Just as a laugh, just tried to check the transfer time of some of my lovely NXT from account X to account Y. I pressed send on one open NRS with account X, then swapped tabs within Firefox and the NXT was already on account Y. Try that with Bitcoin.....

Nxt is 3 months

And look how we've grown......

<singing lustily>

Happy Birthday to NXT, Happy Birthday to us....

@ Salsacz: I would like to officially request 15K NXT from the conference support section of your marketing fund.   I intend to use these funds to print up handout materials for the Texas Bitcoin Conference, with leftover copies from Austin sent on to NXT reps for the San Francisco, New York and Toronto Bitcoin conventions in the next few weeks.  My NXT account for receiving these funds would be 16092180239932658439.

I have previously posted the proposed text for this brochure here for review, and have incorporated suggested changes.  See https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=345619.msg5245021#msg5245021.

I have designed a full color NXT trifold brochure that I would like to have printed in Austin and pickup there on Tuesday evening March 4.   I have priced it with CC West Printing Office (http://ccwestprinting.com) in Austin and their price is 2000 for $526 or 5000 for $723.  Their price is so good for 5000 that I want to order that many.  Turn time is 3 days, so I have to get the final copy to them Thursday Feb 13.?  que?   I will post a PDF receipt for this marketing expenditure on the site here as part of an audit trail.

I will post a link to a PDF here on the site of the final trifold brochure copy I send CC West before I go to Austin so anybody can download it and use it locally.

My intention is to put one of these trifold brochures on every chair in the three speaker areas at the Texas Bitcoin Conference early in the morning on March 6, then go around at the end of the day and pick up any leftovers.   I will then mail unused NXT brochures to whoever is going to the San Francisco conference for their use.  They can keep mailing these brochures forward to each NXT rep at each upcoming conference until they are gone.    Then maybe we can print more, we'll see.

Thanks, Salsa!

rickyness....did a quick proof read of your brochure text and PM'ed it to ya.
I'm on board for any more proof reading u might need....but, if you intend to use these brochures for a while, we need to be sure that they are fairly future-proof, so more proofreaders would also be a good idea.

I'm running a non-hallmarked VPS 24/7 on Amazon EC2, monthly costs were $1.38 for January, and are $0.34 for Feb. Costs fuck all, basically.
Looks like hosting costs are dropping as Jean-Luc works his magic. If version 0.8 also has such low overhead, I'll fire up a few more EC2 instances at the begining of March.

Could you specify the product you are using? Linux m3.medium ?
Good question, set it up a while ago.
There is a set-up guide for these EC2 instances floating around somewhere. I'll search fro it in a bit....
Basically, I chose the cheapest Win options: 512mB EC2 instance, running Win Server 2008.

Any one want to count up how many guys/gals/whatever have been touched by 70175xxxx today?
Maybe we can all send her/him a big bunch of flowers or some beer.......thx again, btw.

First part is sooo easy.

I love having smarter people than me around here.
Looks like 40+ donations, from 1000-5000 NXT. Nice one....!

All this talk about forging and running nodes and this and that and unfair and that.....

And here I am running some nodes just to strengthen the network.

I do it because if the network is successful, then we'll all be succesful. Although if I could forge more it would be a plus.

+1, good work, fellow dave.

I am thinking about setting up a public VPS node to offer a(nother) node for my users of my NXT client.

Which hoster should I use, what are the server specs. I would need to run it smoothly and is there still the danger of hitting hoster bandwith limits with the recent version of NRS?

Thanks!
Marcus

I think that forging should stay as it is...big holders get bigger rewards. It's PoS, live with it.
However: we need to encourage a healthy NXT network, now and in the future, and forging income alone doesn't seem to be enough right now to motivate people. We need some way to make contributing to the network at least slightly profitable for everyone, not just guys with enough to forge.
1689  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: February 23, 2014, 04:59:51 PM
Contacting merchants to begin accepting Nxt is underway. Here's the stages:

1. Contact existing CoinPayments.net merchants to request Nxt

2. Contact the merchant list that accepts Litecoin

3. Work with marketing to put together a brochure

4. Begin finding new small customers and demo how CoinPayments (and other solutions as they appear) can easily integrate

+10.
I'm probably going to be posting more about this later, but we need to make NXT successful as a 1st gen crypto before we can build on that success to become a 2nd gen eco-system.

Getting merchants on board, enabling merchant solutions needs to be given some priority right now.
The exchange push seems to be paying off, I suggest that we slowly shift some of our efforts over to merchant solutions in the next week or so.

Next point is nodes, running of and rewards for.

I've been doing some thinking about Nxt, and would like to make a guess at the third part of BCNext's plan:

The minimum transaction fee for Nxt must be set to zero, OR (far less likely) the process of awarding fees for forging must be removed completely.

Nxt services already operate on top of nodes, so the network is secured and the blockchain is maintained as a consequence of the service's existence.  Value is created at layers above the Nxt core, and "forging-only" nodes become valueless and therefore obsolete.

The only way to allow 100% availability is to remove the dependence on a minimum transaction fee, and move the profit/reward for the service up into the same layer at which the service is offered.

I believe that one element of BCNext's plan is to set the minimum transaction fee to zero.

Whether this is part of The Plan or not, falling fee costs is going to happen on its own by selective pressure.  Cheaper fees will create greater demands for services and the logical conclusion is fees approach zero or get there.

The real problem is that there is practically zero financial incentive now for running a node forging NXT, and that financial incentive is only going to get worse.  Running the node backbone net is thus going to become more and more of a civic duty rather than pay-its-own-way.   Actually, it probably already is that way.   We set up all those VPS nodes back in December during the DDoS attack and only now are the true costs coming to light.  Many of those operators are now saying they can't keep running their VPSs out of personal funds forever.

This is why I want to be in the infrastructure committee.  We have got to figure out how to set up the cheapest possible coordinated (rather than patchwork) network that can support higher and higher TPS, and we need to figure that out sooner rather than later.   I think this is an underappreciated problem and an interesting challenge.

We need more nodes, no argument, especially if we want to get seriously traded and used as a 1st gen currency.
More later, but we need to address this very soon......

BTW: thx to 70175...... whoever you are. Very much appreciated.
Any time anyone bitches about whales who dont care, remember the last couple of hours.....

good people leaving cos of stupid morrons here, that is what is happening. look at the dictatorship of rickyjames, decentralized my ass fools.

moron has one 'r', its use was to describe a form of mental disability and using it in this way is crass even if you spell it correctly.

dictatorship is the absolute concentration of power in one person - as we can choose to ignore ricky (which we don't) this is incorrect.

if you decentralise your ass then that must mean you are or have multiple assholes - possibly one of these that produces this effluent.

cruel.....+10!

Big exchange push here, could certainly use everyone's help:

We have 30 swarm people, where are they?

Weekend, always slow at this time.  Swarm just went out awhile ago, some people like to decompress on the weekend.. we're the crazy ones working on a Sat. Smiley

I've already hassled Cryptsy, opened account on Bittrex with SUPPORT_NXT code and I'm going to give the BTC38 sign-up a try sometime soon.

That pretty much covers the big exchanges, except BTC-e, who will just say that they are thinking about it.
I kinda feel that the smaller exchanges are more trouble than they are worth, tbh, one of the exchanges that folded today (NEWALTEX) had a total of 174 NXT in buy/sell orders.
We need to be on BTC38 and Cryptsy, the smaller exchanges will follow once that happens.

On the subject of small exchanges with (so far) no/low trading volume, check out:
www.swisscex.com
BTT thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=443205.0
They aren't doing much right now, but I sense dedication and professionalism.

Mario: I can have a long look at MyNxt.org and do some corrections/proof reading sometime tomorrow. Should be able to get you a nice clean text by the end of Sunday, but not much quicker.

If u want me to do it, let me know.....
1694  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: February 22, 2014, 02:24:02 PM
agreed, is there pressure to release this source? Or are you asking for the release to gain a bit of help jean luc if its the latter then heck go for it. But if its just to please the like of fc etc then leave it until april as planned.
There is no pressure, I was just putting it up for discussion.

I don't feel I need help, yet, because many of my changes are still so fundamental that I am changing code all over the place and this type of work will be difficult to coordinate when there are many developers. CfB has to re-read the code and figure it out again every time I make some drastic refactoring like the last one. But eventually the code will stabilize and it will be possible to have several developers contributing at the same time. I also don't want to slow down the developers of clients and installers who want to peek into the source.

Should we create a poll and vote for it... Smiley

@J-L...thx for the 0.8 release, mate. Just skimmed the changelog but it looks impressive. Going to upgrade one of my nodes soonish....

Got a lot of stuff I want to say, but I'll stick to source code and FC/NXTclones... for the moment:

I say release the code whenever.
Having it fully open will help any devs who want to get on board with NXT, and give NXT brownie points for being so open and transparent.

Keeping it to ourselves for another month will allow NXT to be attacked on the grounds of "If they won't release the code, what are they hiding?" Though I think that the NXT=scam argument is pretty much dead now, trolls will still take any chance they can get to attack NXT, and we shouldn't let them have this one.

On the subject of trolls: dont let the FCs and nex wind u up. The FCs seem to be one lonely dude with a lot of hats, and no real talent apart from lying. We could tattoo the entire source code on his body and he still wouldn't be able to do much with it, except carry on as he's doing right now. Not serious competition, might be bad publicity by (loose) association.

Anyone else in the copy cat biz is welcome to the code, IMHO
Legitimate efforts will be helped, scammers will scam anyway with or without the code.

SWARM NEEDED

Here is the reddit post, please everyone sign up at Bittrex.

Hello NXT community,

I solicited feedback on another thread about which coins we should support on our exchange before our public launch. NXT was overwhelmingly recommended.

Before we make the final decision, we're providing a special invite code for NXT users to experience our site first hand. Go to https://bittrex.com/Account/Register and use SUPPORT_NXT as the invite code. This gets you past the invite code queue. Place some trades, enabled 2FA, or try any of our other features to help us stress the site before the final launch. If you find a bug, we're handing out bug bounties as well. Having a great exchange helps us but also helps the NXT community.

If we get 100 signs ups using that code and active on our site, we'll add NXT before our public launch.

Please let me know if you have any questions or feedback, Bill

Signed up

Everyone remember to add SUPPORT_NXT as the invite code so we get NXT added Smiley

Signed up and sealed, looks like a good exchange, so git yr asses over there......
1696  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] NEX :: Nxt Reimagined - Industrial Strength - Imagine Fairness! on: February 21, 2014, 07:24:17 PM
...
Do you see these same folks posting 'scam' on the NEM thread?

You don't.
...

you should really do your research before posting stuff, just make it look more and more like you dont know what you are talking about.

Well,  where are the Nxt posters on the NEM thread posting "scam" in huge red fonts?

All I am saying is that these Nxt poster are extremely hypocritical if they are spamming this thread because they see competition, meanwhile they are being silent on the NEM thread.

you are obviously just not paying attention.  look at member 2kool4skewls posts in NEM thread.

Did he spam the post with large red fonts saying "scam"?   He appeared to be upset about the competition,  but how he treats NEM and NEX are like day and night.

So yes,  you are getting some heat from Nxt folks,  but nothing compared to how much heat NEX is receiving.

That is because you are outright, blatantly stealing from people.

Nem at least started with good intentions.

Why is there so much fear around creating an improved NXT?

Not sure.

Usually alt-coins can differentiate themselves by the hash rate that protects the network.  So Litecoin is bettern than say Feathercoin because it has like 100 times the hash.

Now I don't know how you can differentiate a PoS coin from another one.

I think though that these folks are mostly newbies,  competition is part of crypto-currencies.  You compete to mine a coin.  You compete with different coins.   It is all competition.

These folks though play very dirty by running smear campaigns.

Smear campaigns ?
This coming from the guy/girls/entities who have spent much of tha last 3 months attacking NXT ?

How dumb do u think people are, FCs? All u have to do is read this thread, look at the invisible dev team,  and note the massive community behind nex to come to the conclusion that this is going absolutely nowhere.

Right now, all u are getting is a few vague promises from confused newbies, and a lot of completely justified and correct flak from people who can see what u r doing.
(Oh yeah, and endless scam posts.....wore out my scroll wheel on some pages. Stop that, it's bloody annoying)

So, FCs, where are u going with this ? U know very well that u aren't going to pull in more than a few % of your pledged NXT, and that nex will then fall apart. Are u hoping for a miracle, or do u really think u can get out of this with something apart from a load of grief?

I'm still waiting for my new best friend to drop some bribery on me.

And....waiting.

Life sucks when you are a NXT whale, please follow me in the day of an NXT whale:
10 am: just woke up taking a shower and have breakfast.
11 am: after breakfast first computer session, first determine the price NXT will be for the day, programming the trading-bot accordingly and let it run.
12 am: aperitif with some friends, lunch and take some rest.
Afternoon 2 pm: sell the BTC the trading-bot gathered and cash out to the bank.
3 pm: enjoying life

And this day after day since December,

I hate BCNExt  because he was not looking if there were suckpuppet accounts, this way I had over 100M NXT, the problem is I will never get them sold in NXT lifetime that is why NXT is epic failing. Well that is the other side of the medallion, so the biggest problem is not the price of NXT but how do I get them all out before NXT is just another shitcoin.

To all bagholders, I will dump to 0.00006
Have fun
100 megaNXT ?
Drop 1% of that on me, I'll be your best freind 4 eva....or I'll just never criticise u again. Call it bribery.....
My NXT addy is about 2cm down from here.

Downloaded the Nxt client a month ago. That java code thing just pissed me off. Why cant you make a simple setup icon ?
No matter the technical progress if your client cant even be installed. Main problem of this coin and 95% of the altcoins out there is that the developpers just do not have any sense of communication.

No sense of communication.......at the end of a 1900 page thread.
Any else see the irony here?

Looking at the top of the top NXT accounts, those with the biggest holdings. I see almost no movement of NXT and i'm thinking what are they're thinking.

What good is it if you have millions and millions if NXT in the end will be worth less than if you did something with those millions and bought something that would actually help NXT?

Isn't it better to start thinking in terms of maybe you should do something with that money because in the end 20M will be worth more than 50M because those 30M spent made a huge positive difference.

I'm going to add my voice to BitcoinForumators. We do have a community fund, whale dudes.
The way I see it: u have to speculate to accumulate.

The value of any NXT u lose by throwing it into the community fund will come back to u as an increased fiat value for the remaining NXT, so you don't have much to lose.
