4121  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcointalk trading cards on: November 21, 2019, 10:59:34 AM
Another idea would be to create cards which only include history, and a description of each card. Then potentially including a QR code on each card which links to a online game which has updated statistics, and could be played online against others users. This would be a gimmick, and not something which is to the standards of Hearthstone of course. Potentially, allowing users to buy digital cards like Hearthstone in the game, but also have a physical version for the collectors of the forum.
4122  Other / Politics & Society / Re: a society question about prison time on: November 20, 2019, 06:21:07 PM
My input was based on all the hidden factors that contribute to the costs of running a prison, and not just for water, and food costs, but for everything. I'd agree 11k is no where near that of the American prisons, but I can't possibly comment on that. Although, water charges for a prison will be much more than your regular household due to the fact that they would need regular quality assurance checks. This isn't one sample per prison. Its a sample of each length of water main over 5 meters I believe.

However, my point being is its these little things which aren't often public knowledge that we don't think of. My original point which was poorly presented I'll admit wasn't about justifying the costs, but giving a little insight into the hidden factors of running something like this with all the rules, and regulations that are put in place.

AFAIK, UK prisons actually provide very good quality of food to the prisoners. I think it was either Charles Bronson or another high profile prisoner who has publicly said that they have been treated extremely well compared to 30 years or so ago.
4123  Other / Meta / Re: Feature suggestion - Turn embeded images into URLs + thread topic hijacking prev on: November 20, 2019, 05:04:06 PM
This would actually have another hidden benefit that you've probably not considered. In the altcoin section, and announcement threads users like to bump their threads by just quoting their fancy images. Probably, a way of getting exposure of their image again. That would likely neutralize this. Of course, this behavior will still go on with written content based posts, but at least the annoying images will be gone.
4124  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcointalk trading cards on: November 20, 2019, 03:31:25 PM
Hearthstone appeals to the masses, and has their fans fixated on their products. I don't think we'll be getting that same die hard following from a Bitcointalk forum. Especially, because I would assume users would only be interested in collecting significant figures or themselves.

I think to make this work, and not be a huge money sink it would have to be a limited time thing rather than a ongoing trading card game. Perhaps, taking the trading card game element out of it, and having them as "history collectible cards" instead.
4125  Economy / Service Discussion / Expedition services which accept Bitcoin? on: November 19, 2019, 09:36:02 PM
I've traveled solo, and with several companies in the past including Jagged Globe, and although their service was brilliant they only accept fiat based currencies, and solo can be a lot of work to do. This is a long shot, but is there any companies out there which specialize in expeditions to the 7 summits with past summits of Everest, Denali, K2 or Annapura?

I'd probably be interested in using a service which accepts Bitcoin as long as they have a somewhat proven record of summits in the past. Someone who organizes sherpas, porters, and logistics can take a great deal of pressure off, and you can fully focus with the task on hand without too many distractions. The company should definitely kit the sherpas, and porters out with good equipment, offer a good pay to them, and look after them just as much as the clients which are paying for this service.
4126  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcointalk trading cards on: November 19, 2019, 09:30:52 PM
If these were to be popular enough, then yeah the cards would be released every 12 months or so. Although, I doubt that these would be popular enough to justify that. Therefore, the better way of going about this would likely to include limited edition cards. Possibility, scrapping the whole game system, and only including a description, avatar, and notable contributions to the forum or Bitcoin.
4127  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcointalk trading cards on: November 19, 2019, 08:53:02 PM
Would need rules and implementation. How to kill a card. Attack. Stats.. How to play, what is the goal. Will there be generic cards like "signature spammer: powers, posts in 20 topics at the same time, can do this thrice per day." ?
There would be rules included with each pack. This is fairly inexpensive to do. Although, the primarily focus of this would be to have it as a collectible, and not necessarily the game itself. They would probably have to be serialized, and have a hologram on the back to prove they are authentic.

It seems that there's a few individuals which are keen on the idea, but other than that there isn't a whole lot of interest across the board. So, it might be worth just doing limited editions rather than making these on mass.
4128  Other / Meta / Re: Merit spree is underway. on: November 19, 2019, 08:50:44 PM
Once I wrote in the contest thread that it is going to be a very hard job, to pick winners for BTC prize and also to merit the nice artworks. Double prize, Double work.
I hope you have already marked which artworks you'll be going to pick as winners during merit giveaway, otherwise your head will really explode in next run.
Unfortunately, for theymos that wouldn't be fair to the other submissions. I'm guessing he'll review every single piece of art submitted until the cut off date, and time. Fortunately, for theymos we are approaching that. Honestly, I had no idea that this would generate such a buzz, and there's been multiple users crawling out of the woodwork who have been inactive for a while or completely new users.
4129  Other / Meta / Re: Is Bitcoin not supposed to be about FREEDOM ??? on: November 19, 2019, 04:26:45 PM
It might be that the thread had gone entirely off-topic.
Exactly, although usually off topic replies themselves get deleted, unless there's a lot of off topic replies, and sometimes that results in the thread being locked. Although, I think its the combination of the OP not having enough substance to it, and the off topic replies contributing to the overall state of that thread. If the OP was actually a pretty substantial post whether it was anti Bitcoin or not then it would likely have resulted in the users that are posting off topic replies getting punished rather than the whole thread being locked.
4130  Other / Meta / Re: Is Bitcoin not supposed to be about FREEDOM ??? on: November 19, 2019, 03:48:56 PM
You actually bring up some valid points, and a good perspective on the issues with censorship on the internet. However, I think you've taken your thread being locked out of context. First of all,  the forum probably was less moderated back then, although its not because moderators are being instructed to be less tolerant its simply down to the fact that there's more moderators. If the forum had the man power it had back then you'd likely see similar results. Plus, everything wasn't being repeated in the early days, because everything was somewhat new.

Trust me, there's far more censorship in most other places on the internet. You can definitely post anti Bitcoin posts here without them getting locked or deleted as long as they're actually constructive. Yeah, you'll likely get a lot of backlash like your thread did, but that's probably expected coming to a Bitcoin forum.

My guess to why your post got locked is because its repetitive, and isn't really adding anything new to other ongoing discussions in that section. However, it might not even be for your original opinion. It might be the fact that the thread is attracting other users which are quite frankly shitposting, and when taking into account that your original post isn't offering anything indepth or new, and basically encouraging other low quality replies that's likely why it got locked.
4131  Other / Meta / Re: Force Moderators To Give A Reason For Deleted Posts on: November 19, 2019, 03:38:38 PM
A drop down menu would likely help in terms of efficiency compared to sending a personal message. Which, I don't do for anywhere near all of my reports. I only do it for exceptional cases or if a user asks a direct question. I'd be more than willing to spend a few extra seconds on a report if a drop down menu was implemented. I don't think we should require it as we also have to consider system resources, and how many automatic personal messages would be generated from the results of the drop down menu. Although, having a simpler process will likely encourage existing moderators to use it instead of them having to send a personal message.
4132  Economy / Reputation / Re: Spamming Personal Message for Advertising Exchange on: November 19, 2019, 02:47:19 PM
Just to clarify things, so do you mean that it's not necessary anymore to create a thread here in the reputation section for these types of PM advertising? And all we need to do is to click the "Report to Admin" button?
In theory yeah, unless you want the community to be aware of malicious messages being sent around. "Report to the admin" will likely see consequences on the forum side of things. For example, if a user was spreading malware through personal messages then they would likely be  banned if users have reported them with the "report to admin" function.

If you believe this is a threat to the community, and others might fall victim to the malicious software its probably a good idea to post about it publicly too. Whether you want to disclose the personal message is entirely up to you though.
4133  Other / Meta / Re: Merit spree is underway. on: November 19, 2019, 02:42:26 PM
That is awesome does it happens every anniversary? I created my account long time ago but I have been here only a few months that is why I don't know this to happen but that merit spree is so cool Theymos is so generous that he gives a lot of merit to the users of this forum. And that will help people to rank up and be productive in this forum. I hope that a lot of high ranking members would be like Theymos and also go to a merit spree. It is just like raining merit. He give so many merit to the users of this forum so cool.

No, this is the first time in our entire history that there has been a art contest. It was made to sort of celebrate the 10th anniversary, but also probably in attempt to get some image based content relating to the forum because I know theymos has stated he's  been a little disappointed that there hasn't been too many image based creations for the forum.

Theymos does merit the odd occasional post, but we've never seen this amount of merit get dropped in such a short period of time.
4134  Other / Meta / Re: Merit spree is underway. on: November 19, 2019, 02:13:15 PM
Is theymos a merit source? He looks like a giant merit source I have ever seen but it is likely that he has drained out of sMerits for today and he has to wait for tomorrow to see his sMerits pool refilled.
I think its far more likely that he's exhausted his brain. I'm only about 20 or so pages into that thread, and its been every couple of days I've been going through them. He's been doing it for hours at a time, and some of them are from newbies which can't embed images so he has to go through the extra effort of navigating to the image.
4135  Other / Meta / Re: 10th anniversary art contest on: November 19, 2019, 12:18:03 PM
I thought I'd do something a little different as I'm not much of an artist in the traditional sense. However, I've written a funny (hopefully) poem which I've then taken noteworthy verses from, and placed them in a cloud art relating to the line. I've made this into the gif so there's not a huge picture or multiple pictures. Its a way of telling a story via the cloud art as well as the written work. All images used for the cloud art were stock images taken from pexels & Pixabay.

Definitely not my best work in terms of the poem. It was actually pretty difficult to write one about the forum, and its users. However, I gave it a shot.

Bitcointalk

Our second home to get away from our lives,
And to hide from our nagging wives.
No, this isn't exactly a holiday in the Maldives,
But this is a place that will be remembered in the archives.

For this world is filled with bulls, and bears,
Which assure that the market follows that of a flight of stairs.
Everyone flocks to contribute to the discussion,
The perfect recipe for a moderators concussion.

The brightest light that ever was seen,
shines through the computer screen.
This is Bitcointalk.
Where the trolls squawk, and the casuals stalk,
While the remaining panic over a hard fork.

For many a Satoshi quote,
is the ultimate antidote.
Any post involving discarding the bank note,
They would be eager to merit and promote.

"Bitcoin will go to the moon"
Either that or the Salty Spittoon.
Where the toughest of trolls cower, and hope to exist,
Because they've found themselves on every signature blacklist.

Cryptohunter is 'bout to make a scene,
Can't blame them for having a mental age of thirteen.
Thinking his alt accounts create the perfect smokescreen,
However, DefaultTrust are sure to provide a vaccine.

The merit cycling club,
That is run by a tiny fox cub.
Very much like DefaultTrust,
Trolls are claiming that their activities are unjust.

As for users we have quite the collection,
From those in the local section, that are always full of affection.
To Vod, a man who licks his own boob,
And Nullius who was grown in a test tube.

Theymos, the admin of the forum,
Satoshi was the one before him,
And the users equally adore 'em.
As for the trolls that exist I suggest you simply ignore them.

And for my advice to you newbies?
Don't stare at old man Vod's boobies.
Forget about your ultimate goal of moneymaking,
And become part of something groundbreaking.

I have Satoshi to thank,
for allowing me to dispose of the traditional bank.
Theymos, I show my appreciation,
For providing a platform that marks this great celebration.

And from experienced members, to the brand new.
All I have to say is thank you.
For making Bitcointalk what is it is today,
Is the reason why many will celebrate its birthday.

4136  Other / Meta / Re: Merit spree is underway. on: November 19, 2019, 10:42:34 AM
This merit abuse is unacceptable Wink The art contest was obviously a ploy so that theymos could rank his alternate accounts up.

LOL that art thread definitely got too out of hand. A lot of users saw the high potential of them actually earning merit without having to make decent posts hence it's really not surprising that they're taking full advantage of it while the thread is still up and active until it gets old enough to be locked.

Goddamn that's a lot of merits though.
Yeah, its a one off thing though to sort of get the community involved with the anniversary so I think its an exception where we can reward users on art they've created instead of quality posts.
4137  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [AUCTION] MehMeh's first Bitcoin artwork sale on: November 18, 2019, 06:22:49 PM
I'll keep this topic open until you confirm receiving your new MehMeh artwork.

Just picked the masterpiece up from my local post office! All in tact, and was sent wrapped up in style Wink I'll just need to find a frame to this up now! Thanks MehMeh good luck with your future work of arts!
4138  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcointalk trading cards on: November 18, 2019, 06:06:58 PM
Digital version of a card? That'd be literally an image. How would you play with someone online? I doubt creating an online card-playing platform is on OP's bucket list as far as this project is concerned.

@Welsh, Sounds like a brilliant idea. I wouldn't care too much about the game or anything but if I had to see my profile on a card of decks, I'd just buy for the heck of it!
Yeah, a online trading game would be the bottom of the priority list, and probably only made if it was extremely popular. However, as you stated you'd get one if you were on it. I think a lot of users will have that sort of motivation, and won't be interested in others. It would be nice to have something like the top 500 users, and only those within the top 100 are holographic.

I'm a little geeky when it comes to collectible items for this forum in particular. I'm not big on collecting other things like comics etc. Although, my passions I love to collect gimmicky things like this.

If you really have concerns about the cost of printing, designing, and manufacturing these cards why not go straight and make this an online collectible instead? I know it will be half the fun of having the real physical card in your hand but I think this will considerably keep the cost down because you wouldn't have the trouble of designing and manufacturing these cards as all of them will be created digitally. You can even go down the route of creating a digital version first and for those who are interested in the physical versions of their cards will have the option to buy a physical copy of it.
Its not solely the fact that they'll cost a lot to manufacture. Its justifying the price for that when the intent is to sell them to users of the forum, but without putting a ridiculous price on them. Holographic cards definitely shoot the price up, where as normal cards would likely cost something like 3-5 dollars per deck if bought in large quantities. That's why I kind of wanted to gauge the interest in this as obviously larger quantities will be better.
4139  Other / Meta / Re: BTCTALK CARDS - The Real-time Custom Cards for Bitcointalk Members on: November 18, 2019, 02:34:21 PM
I would love this, and there was an idea floating around last year or earlier this year that never got traction--which is sort of the same situation with the bitcointalk commemorative coin which has been suggested.  I think a physical set of trading cards or playing cards featuring some of the most notable members of the forum would be an incredible snapshot of what the forum is like ten years on.  You could look back on such a set years later and wonder what happened to those members or recollect fondly on a piece of history.  It's a great idea IMO.

It's probably a good way to make money for whoever makes such a set, too.  I'd sure as hell buy one, probably two.  There are some very talented designers and manufacturers in the Collectibles section, and I'm sure some of them would have no trouble making a set.  Webtricks did a great job with his design here, and I'd be happy with a card of his design (though he'd have to make a backside).
Yeah, I tried to push for the collectible coin, and was still open to it. A "big" manufacturer actually got in touch, and said they would be interested. However, when I messaged back asking for a little more details to get the ball rolling they didn't answer. Although, they didn't actually log into the forum account. So, that's a shame, and it was fairly ambitious to get it all done, and ready for the 10th anniversary. I'd definitely be willing to contribute for other significant landmarks of the forum though.

As for the cards they're definitely a lot less ambitious, and easier to do. Deciding on a business model for the cards is probably the hardest. The most fun way would be to have random packs, but I just don't think there would be enough interest. So, making cards for the top 100 recognized using the BPIP's data with Vod's permission would likely be the best idea. Designing these cards with holographic card, and colouring them based on their position within the 100 would probably be better considering the costs.

Literally, opened a thread about maybe getting a trading card game off the ground. If something like this could be created for physical cards then I think that would be pretty neat. The only issue with this is all the cards would have to be custom designed, and would need to avoid using copyrighted images.

Any plans on creating physical cards of these?
I have no plans to go for physical cards. Maybe someone else can decide to make these come alive. If anyone else can take initiative, I can provide all that required for making cards worth collectible - like more neat design, holographic design, etc.
[/quote]
That's alright. I do believe we'll eventually get some physical cards made if there seems to be enough interest.
