4101  Other / Meta / Re: Stats of artists who received at least 1 merit from the 10th art contest on: November 23, 2019, 03:07:03 PM
In Contest, theymos said he will give at least 1 BTC to contribution. Then i see last info there are for 100 best art will received BTC. Is right 0.01 btc to 100 best art ?
No, from what I can gather from theymos' post he will be rewarding users with uneven amounts of Bitcoin. Although, he has estimated around 100 users will recieve some undetermined amount of Bitcoin with those that are considered the better submissions of the bunch getting far more Bitcoin.
4102  Other / Meta / Re: Stats of artists who received at least 1 merit from the 10th art contest on: November 23, 2019, 02:06:17 PM
I was curious what the merit statistics were like with users who only submitted one submission to the art contest. I used DdmrDdmr's data here, and gathered the top 50. Including the link to the submission first, and then followed by the username. The data is in order of most merits to least, however I've not included the amount of merits.

Top 50 users with only 1 submission

Seems with the very small data set that I was working with which was ~100 users, around 50% of them submitted more than 1 submission. The highest amount of merit received in this data set was 313, and the lowest 49. My observations is users were updating their art multiple times through the thread, and were collecting more merit for the same piece which have not been included in this data set. Although, I think theymos was aware of this, and seemed to skip over most if not all the updates so his judgement based on total amount of merit per person will still work. In conclusion, it definitely paid off to submit multiple submissions to the contest (as long as they were of high quality).
4103  Other / Meta / Re: 10th anniversary art contest on: November 23, 2019, 11:05:42 AM
Surprising how many users actually posted multiple submissions according to DdmrDdmr's post there. I just assumed most of those trying to bruteforce the art submissions were from those with low quality, and weren't getting any merit. Seems like it really did pay off for some users on a merit point of view submitting more than 10 in some instances.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with Suchmoon's stance on this. Although, I believe the OP is spewing bullshit its certainly not scamming anyone. Unless, they were offering to double users money themselves or advertising a site which in turn scams. I just think this user is either trying to troll a Bitcoin forum or has opposing views to most of the population on this forum.

I'll oppose it for now unless there's a little more to the story here.

Although, regarding the following;
The user sends multiple PM's about users on my trustlist - so I checked the neg from lauda and its correct.
I'm not sure I'm quite understanding whats being implied. What exactly is the user doing by messaging users on your trust list?
4107  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Forum project in the making on: November 22, 2019, 09:38:28 PM
What's your aim for launching a Bitcoin forum? Obviously, if its to avoid censorship, and add another forum to the mix then that's fine. However, do you have any niches that you'll be focusing on within Bitcoin or cryptocurrencies?

Why are you guys suggesting to use epochtalk? If it was ready for usage, wouldn't Theymos already be using it for Bitcointalk?
It needs testing. Any good software needs to be tested vigorously, and having a larger amount of users testing the software is better than just a select few.

If it was my forum and I was an inexperienced forum host, I would want to be using the most robust, proven, widely supported forum software available—that's certainly not epochtalk (at least for now).
Decent advice. Well documented forums are probably better for those that are inexperienced, and there's always the possibility of importing the database to different software in the future.
4108  Other / Meta / Re: The Bitcoin Forum is 10 years old! on: November 22, 2019, 08:43:12 PM
Just think, while we are all celebrating the 10th anniversary of the forums theymos is racking his brain over the art contests. What a hero! Cheesy

Hats off and a thousand thanks to theymos for all the hard work he does to keep this place top notch.
It would be quite the scene if all the WO hat users took their hat off in homage to the forum!
4109  Economy / Reputation / Re: LoyceV vs DdmrDdmr (and get your own Merit graph: up to 10 users per graph) on: November 22, 2019, 08:21:10 PM
@ LoyceV I'd like to compare those that are in the Chipmixer campaign with over 1500 merits total:

First graph:
84521
2033515
2143453
579628
487418
465017
85033
787736
1582324
359716

2nd graph:
1188543
140827
234771

(Its a shame there's more than 10 users so they don't fit on one graph)

All reasons mentioned by you are Loycev make a lot of sense, but based on my personal experience it's mostly "where" you post that makes the big difference, if i take myself as an example
I would say that where you post, and at what times matters, but I wouldn't say its the biggest cause. To be able to find a cause we would likely have to do a case study of over a thousand users. and ideally more  to have any sort of accuracy. A interesting statistic to cough up would be to determine how many merits per post since the introduction of the merit system users get. This would be able to help determine whether its a matter of activity versus where you post.

For example, I've pretty much always posted in the same sections since the merit introduction, but I haven't always been actively posting. Active on the forum yeah, but not posting. You can probably check this via the chipmixer campaign spreadsheet where I would have 0 posts some weeks. This is a mixture of reasons, but getting used to moderating, and trying to improve the way I moderate definitely had an impact. Some of you may have noticed that my public activity has been much greater recently, and as a result I've seen quite a growth in my merits. I'm sure LoyceV or someone else would be able to pull up a graph showing how I've stagnated for a little while, and having exponential growth when coming active again.

I think its become quite obvious that a lot of users are bruteforcing the merit gain, and although honestly I think their posts are decent enough to gain merit a statistic showing how many merits per post made would likely be a better indication of someone's overall quality. Of course, this can be inaccurate as well as there's no standards for awarding merit.

These are my observations (which may be inaccurate, and just personal opinion); Certain parts of the forum yield a much greater chance of merit not because of activity or the topic subject, but because there's almost a little mini community within Bitcointalk in certain sections. The collectible section, and the wall observer thread in my opinion are these little mini communities where it seems there's a lot of "back scratching". Although, I'd like to make it clear I'm not implying that the back scratching is unjust or wrong I've just made the observation that it's definitely easier to earn merit in these mini communities when considering the post quality. These are users that are not shitposting either, and in fact many of the users there are very good posters.

4110  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Did I compromise my paper wallet? Help and opinions appreciated on: November 22, 2019, 07:06:33 PM
A relatively simple method would be to put Tails OS onto an USB stick, unplug internet and boot from the stick.
Tails already have Electrum on it, so you create a new wallet (it will not be persistent!), write down the words and save onto another stick a couple of addresses.
Done.
If anyone takes this route make sure to verify that you have the tails downloaded from a legitimate source by verifying the signature via PGP. Should probably do this for all media that you download, but people get lazy, and tend to forget.

you can run a watch-only Electrum wallet on an online computer, or even your mobile phone.
You don't really need additional software for this, though. You could simply just keep a copy of the address, and search it up on a block explorer.
4111  Other / Meta / Re: The Bitcoin Forum is 10 years old! on: November 22, 2019, 06:55:04 PM
I love how that graphic used dollar signs for the design.

Is bitcointalk one of the biggest forums around in terms of registered members or what?  If it isn't, I would imagine it's close.  I know most of the accounts here are inactive, but there still are a f-ton of active members and a lot of great discussion flows from that--even with all the shitposting nonsense.  That's incredible IMO.  And sometimes it's even the shitposters sparking the discussion by making threads that can turn out to be very interesting.  I don't think that without signature campaigns and bounties that the forum would be quite what it is right now.  Just sayin'.
Obviously, the biggest forum related to Bitcoin or cryptocurrencies in general, but no where near the biggest forum in general. Sites like digitalpoint, warriorforums, and IGN have almost double. Then there's probably a few others like the Minecraft related forums, and obviously if you count Yahoo answers etc. However, when comparing how long all the others have been around for I would say its pretty impressive.

I haven't got exact figures because I'm not registered on anything else. However, IGN's Wikipedia page says 4.2 million registered users.
4112  Other / Meta / Re: The Bitcoin Forum is 10 years old! on: November 22, 2019, 06:19:42 PM
When I first signed up for this forum 6 years ago I would have never expected it to become such a big part of my life, and the amount of passion I would gather over the years for it. I've never been part of a forum community like this one, and forums have never really interested me. However, I've probably checked this forum almost every day since I registered 6 years ago.

Just know we've influenced a generation of youngsters. Instead of them getting drunk, and into trouble on the streets they've been here. Still getting drunk, but also watching the price bounce up, and down on the wall observer thread.

Thank you, everyone, for your continuing contributions to this legendary forum! Let's try to somehow make the next 10 years even more interesting than the last.
This means more pizza buying, legendary april fools, and more official Bitcointalk condoms for sale
4113  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcointalk trading cards on: November 22, 2019, 05:12:13 PM
Will each card be unique or will there be multiple copies of a single card? < Example : 1 of 20 >
Each card would likely have a unique serial or hologram to link up with the web version, and also distinguish that its a real card. However, all art work would be the same. Depending on the business model taken then some cards will probably be more rare than others. Especially, cards like Satoshi's they should probably be made from a totally different material, and really stand out as a collectors item.

I only dropped like 200 merit, and my head hurts. I think I'm all art'd out for the next 10 years. Who said we were lacking Bitcointalk.org mascots, and image based content? Tongue

The speed at which Theymos merits the art contest entries, by the time the contest ends, he would have seen all the entries and would have finished meriting. Incredible !!!

I reckon he needs to review the whole thread twice just to make sure he hasn't missed any gems Cheesy

I'll take a look at the references a little later on after I get back. However, I just want it to be clear that I'm not looking to create a new token or Altcoin for this. I'm obviously a big supporter of Bitcoin, and although I moderate the Altcoin section I'm not actually invested in any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin.

Honestly, I'd prefer HTML5/ Javascript over Flash since it's a dying technology.

It's a pain to run and update it too.

That's the only reason I haven't looked at the game itself, and just taken a look at the screenshots of the game. I hate Flash with a passion, and try to avoid using it all together. Unfortunately, when doing my degree my university insists on using Flash based elements.
4118  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can somebody explain, please? Microsoft and quantum computing. on: November 21, 2019, 04:23:50 PM
I hate these generic article titles being published by news publishers recently.

Either way, we are still likely decades away from this threatening bitcoin.
To make it clear to the OP; Even then it only really threatens the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA), and that can be changed for better suited alternatives at the time that its actually required. However, At the moment there's no need to do so as we are a long way off from having quantum computers that are capable of breaking the ECDSA. However, despite this there has been progress within this field, and finding the best way to move on from the ECDSA, but I'd expect this to ramp up in intensity in the next few years.

Bitcoin fundamentally isn't going to be under threat of quantum computers, however the algorithm which Bitcoin uses will be. There's been multiple discussions about this recently here on the forum, and elsewhere on the internet due to the recent Google claims, but as o_e_l_e_o suggests we are currently no where near the physical qubits to be overly concerned.

4119  Other / Meta / Re: Merit spree is underway. on: November 21, 2019, 04:14:18 PM
He distributed 7212 merits in those two meriting spree alone.
He distributed 7793 merits in total to the art thread.
And thus it will be known as the "great airdrop of 2019". Its nice to see some users who wouldn't normally get merit through a different means which still requires effort to be made. Hopefully, this encourages these users to push on, and start contributing more to the community. Bitcointalk offers opportunities to its communities that you don't see anywhere else.

I got 20 only, and I am so disappointed.
I reckon, from what I see from merit distribution, that Theymos liked some different kind of works, but to me it is beautiful, and I am using it as wallpaper on my devices (even tough I admit it's a little bit confusing).
I'm just putting an assumption out there maybe he'll be considering those with 10+ or whatever. It would be nice if he rewarded the badges to only exceptional pieces or potentially offering badges to those who excelled in a certain field of art. For example, hand painted, digitally painted, and poems Wink Wink Wink

Nah, I'm just kidding. Hopefully, these badges are kept somewhat rare, but enough to not just disappear because of users going inactive. I hope to see these badges in 10 years from now, and it can remind us of the 10th anniversary.
4120  Other / Meta / Re: Merit spree is underway. on: November 21, 2019, 11:09:11 AM
Honestly it is my first time I witnessed continous hours of actively works in the forum from theymos. I know he probably does this but we don't know what he does behind the scenes. This time, with the art contest and his merit-sending activities, we have good evidence that he works hours-in-a-row for the art contest within last few days.

Theymos definitely does a lot of work behind the scenes that a lot of users don't get to see. For example, he has to do the taxes, mod payments, maintenance of the forum, and also maintain some sort of life outside of the forum. I'm not sure what his logged in time is, but he's extremely active most of the time.

I think theymos has been a little more publicly active this year, and last with the introduction of the merit system, and the recent bumping changes.

Initially, he planned to distributed at least 500 merits but from now I think he might distribute at least 5000 merits.  Grin
I'm expecting similar numbers, but also the number of art badges that are given out because of how many submissions were actually submitted. I imagine those that have received over 30 merit from theymos on their art pieces are likely in the running to receive a badge. Definitely, something of significance to have a badge dedicated to the 10th anniversary which probably won't be reused in further forum contests if there are any.
