Banks are not inherently evil. [...] The business of a legitimate bank is to get money loaned out on a risk appropriate basis, and make money for their depositors via interest. Doing this fosters development and adoption.
Correct.

There are a great many reasons why banking would be very good for bitcoin and other cryptos.
Incorrect.

Only a fool would lend a highly volatile currency like bitcoin is, since if it goes one way they pay you back easily but they're worth less, and if they go the other way they just won't be able to pay you back at all.

Plus, there's no bitcoin ecosystem, which is one of the reasons they are so volatile, so it would be silly to ask a loan in that currency anyway: you should get loans in the currency you are actually going to base your businss on.

The volatility has a lot to do with the fact that it is NOT much of an ecosystme at the moment. It's getting there.

In fact a lot of short term loans ARE made with bitcoin. I think a bank or bank like institution would actually help that, as they would set longer term interest rates just due to the nature of finance.

And we ARE speculating on the future here Cheesy

Besides that, a great many banks rely upon and utilize the US dollar. Can you think of a more volatile currency? It's current value is so far below it's initial market as to be a ludicrous, yet it continues on...

Once you're a wealthy elite, you have unlimited escorts and sugar babies

I might just have a good marriage, but pretty sure my wife will stick around, and let me have both:

OP was correct... but only for people who got in from 2009-2012, he's not talking about the rest of us schmucks unfortunately.  Undecided

He is a "wealthy elite" now so he doesn't hang out here anymore.

OP was perma-banned for being a (generally) disruptive troll and repeated rule violations.
This thread was one of his best contributions.

Also many people who started in 2011-12 are not wealthy (like me), the best time was 2009 to 2010.
There is still time to start new projects, sites, etc.

You know, at one time this classic thread would be bumped by old hands as a way to sarcastically deflate the manic enthusiasm during a bubble run up. But now, when we are already past the once unsurpassable milestones of $100 and $1000, and can reasonably project $10000+ in 2015, the awe and wonder expressed by the OP are taken more seriously.

And this is a good thing.

It's been a fascinating few years.

Bitcoin is the first monetary system to credibly offer perfect information to all economic participants.
But Bitcointalk & /r/bitcoin are heavily censored. bitco.in/forum, forum.bitcoin.com, and /r/btc are open.

I'm just glad to be a part of this "bubble".   Smiley

Has it been 5 years already?  I can't wait to see what happens in the next 5.

People in 2012 said this about the people from 2010 and earlier.
People in 2013 said this about the people from 2011 and earlier.
Now you, in 2014, say it about the people from 2012 and earlier.

See the pattern? Wink

Right?  We are all still so early in this.  Just buy a coin or two, or three.  Most people in the world will never even own 1 coin!  When my husband told me that last year something clicked and I decided we needed to get as many as we possibly could afford.

I keep count from 2010 - therefore 5 years. Satoshi mined a million coins on several computers in 2009 while alpha testing the Bitcoin network, but I do not count that year.

...Most people in the world will never even own 1 coin!...

As the prices rises (like the last couple days) people very quickly remember how limited the supply of BTC is.
Buy now, before only the wealthy elite can afford them.   Cheesy

Some people would say we are at that point already if we consider third world countries, or just about anyone without any disposable income.

Speaking of wealthy, wasnt there a prop bet in the making for BTC Vs. Berkshire Hathaway Class A stock?

I thought I heard of a few people putting up BTC against 1 share of the stock for earnings (with the winner taking it)

Yes there was a thread about that ~3 weeks ago, when Warren Buffet was saying bad things about BTC (based on lack of understanding)
Our friend from Primedice (does everyone know Primedice.com is the best BTC gaming site?) was considering betting 300 BTC.
I hope he wins if the bet is made. Smiley
