Maybe, maybe not. You would have to ask Ms. Vranova. Auctions are more complicated, take time and there is a time value to money. There is no auction site that takes payment by bitcoin so Trezor would have to hold an in house auction. They did not choose to do so.

Smart move because:

1) Immediate income in bitcoin from sale at a price they determined the market would bear. I was surprised they set the price that high. I expected $800 but still bought one. Did you?
2) Avoided hassle of running an auction.

Not really interested in arguing the point, why don't you ask Ms. Vranova directly? I have work to get to.

You're right, we could probably have squeezed more profit out of this but I consider this a fair deal for everyone + our resources (time, effort) are valuable too.
At this moment, there is only one Metallic left.

I was going to go off on a rant (having payed roughly $550 (?) for my metal trezor when they were on preorder back in 2013 for 3 BTC).

Now I know roughly what it's worth. Screw collecting for me, though. I'm using the thing, scratching it and everything ;-)

No, the secret seed is stored in rewritable flash. Only the bootloader sector is locked.  See this article for more detail on flash memory layout.

You should protect your valuable metallic Trezor with a $16 leather Remote Tote. The medium size fits fine and you can still connect the USB cable while Trezor is in the Tote just shift the Trezor to the side. It only takes a second to remove from the tote by disconnecting the carabiner if you like to use that way. NFI just a good product I found while searching. I own several and they are made very well.



If there is a better way to carry a Trezor on a keychain I am not aware of please share your find.

You sound like one of those toy collectors who will not open the box as I am told some collectors demand new in box:) Knife collectors on the other hand, preserve the box and packaging in case a trade is made but enjoy their knives. My feeling is why not enjoy the Trezor? It is truly an objet d'art.
