I'm trying to set up p2pool on a Ubuntu server machine for Bitcoin TESTNET. The testnet instance of bitcoind and p2pool are on the same machine.

Pretty much it seems like everything has been setup correctly but I'm getting this when starting P2Pool:

Any ideas?

Those two ports shouldn't be the same. Are you specifying --bitcoind-rpc-port 18333 where it should be --bitcoind-rpc-port 18332?

Ah! That seems to be the problem! Thank you!

Your BFLs will run great on p2pool, or you could just use p2pool as a backup for them.

I see higher amount of rejects on p2pool with BFL devices using cgminer compared to other pools. Is that normal? or am I missing some configuration?

A bit higher than other pools is normal. Non-rejects are worth slightly more on P2Pool to compensate. What reject rate are you getting? The average for the entire P2Pool is 7%, so if you're close to that you're not losing anything. If you're lower you're actually making more than expected.

I see about 5.1% to 5.5% now. How is it that I am making more compared to a pool with 1% fee but very low rejects? Because on a normal pool I get 0.3% rejects only? Wouldnt that mean I would make 4% more on a normal pool?

With p2pool the absolute number doesn't matter, only in comparison to the pool average value. This is because rejected shares could still solve a bitcoin block. When you are mining on p2pool you are essentially working on two "block" chains, the bitcoin one and the p2pool sharechain. A share can be valid for bitcoin but not necessarily for p2pool.

Where is this set?  It doesn't seem to be an option in p2pool or bitcoin.  And what is the formula?  A Single is 60GH/s so 30% of that is 9, two to the power 9 is 512.

Like I said, valid shares are worth slightly more to compensate for rejects.

The "Efficiency" number tells you how much you're making compared to a perfect pool. Mine for a while and then look at it and its confidence interval.

forrestv,

do you know why slush's stratum mining proxy does not work with p2pool?

Even latest from git, I did try to mine on p2pool using a bitfury unit, which uses slush's proxy, but it does not mine.

I see the "New work for worker" message on p2pool's log, but shush's proxy keeps spitting gibberish like this

Code:

The log here was created using ufasoft bitcoin-miner which seems to have the same problem when connected to p2pool using the stratum proxy because I'm not able right now to retest the bitfury's unit.

Any idea?

I even fiddled a little with -rt and --old-target options of slush's proxy but they make no difference.

Change your difficulty - nearest power of 2 of 30% of your hashrate
(so +8 for a LS, +16 for a Single)
Where is this set?
There'a lot of really useful information in the p2pool documentation ...

Quote
It doesn't seem to be an option in p2pool or bitcoin
In your mining software by appending +(n) onto the worker name (address)

Quote
And what is the formula?
The one you quoted Wink

Quote
A Single is 60GH/s so 30% of that is 9
30% of 60 is not 9 for a start - and the numbers for a single and a little-single :p

30% of 60 is 18, nearest 'power of 2' to 18 is 16, so you use 16

I see higher amount of rejects on p2pool with BFL devices using cgminer compared to other pools. Is that normal? or am I missing some configuration?
Change your difficulty - nearest power of 2 of 30% of your hashrate
(so +8 for a LS, +16 for a Single)

So if I have 3 singles running with cgminer, I should set it to 3x16=48 or 16 only?

Total power per miner not per device.

Where is this set?
There'a lot of really useful information in the p2pool documentation ...

My brain simply isn't working right.  I have looked at the documentation in the github download, and at the wiki, and cannot find this.  I know I have read it before, so I must have found it previously.  Could you drop me a link to the right doc?

30% of 60 is not 9 for a start - and the numbers for a single and a little-single :p

Ahem.  See my first point.

3 * 60 * .3 == 54
Powers of 2: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64...

64 would probably be a good idea, but you'd get slightly less variance with 32.  Then again, since you don't get a share until around 50,000, there's no point in setting the local difficulty lower than you have to, unless you want the most accurate statistics possible... but then you can just use your mining software to see what your singles are actually doing.

Short answer: 64

180 / 1.4 = 128 (almost exactly)

There's no point in using a lower difficulty with p2pool. You're just wasting your own CPU cycles.
