I don't think so.  The point is that some people wouldn't be paid when a block is found, who previously would have been. 

If there was 100 shares to be paid, 25 might get 4X the payment and the other 75 would get nothing.  However, the pool would remember that it owes each of them whatever they would have been paid.

When a miner hasn't been seen for 75% of the chain, then they would be paid out no matter how low their balance.

For it to work miners would have to be willing to keep a positive balance on the chain.  However, when someone leaves, they still get a payout.

This balance effectively gets creates anyway when the chain is started.  The miners who mined the start of the chain got a higher reward until things settle down.

Every share you send back to p2pool has to be processed by p2pool also.
If when you were mining at 1GH/s and 1diff was ok - then now at 42GH/s ... 32diff should be fine and a good reduction in traffic and work for p2pool

Anyone else noticed GetBlock Latency seems a little higher with 13.3?  I used to get about 0.2s on average with 13.2, but it seems to run about 0.35-0.4s now.  I ran an old snapshot (Hyper-V snapshot I took before upgrading), and it still runs about 0.2s.

if you go back a few shares, a parent share is 35417e20, not 15364f72.  so some node built off of 35417e20, while mine was trying to jump to something else.

i guess we've come to the conclusion that the share right before a block "almost always" gets orphaned (35417e20 didn't), and a share directly after a block has a good chance of getting orphaned (i.e. if I had built off of 15364f72, instead of 35417e20)
 
so i guess after taking everyone's hashrate into consideration, you'd want to get your getblocktemplate slow enough to not cause problems.  the largest node is private, but you can see on http://p2pool-nodes.info/ that one at 740ghash is *10 seconds behind

Mathematically, that would be the same as manually boosting the difficulty of the shares returned to the network. You'll get paid less often (large variance), but your payouts will be larger. This features is already built-in.

I don't think so.  The point is that some people wouldn't be paid when a block is found, who previously would have been. 

Which, for a low rate, low payout miner is what increasing your difficulty will accomplish.  When you are averaging near just a few shares in the window there will be some blocks when you just don't have any shares in the window. If you up the difficulty there will be more (of course, on average you'll still end up with a fair payout, just higher variance with bigger quanta).  Since the difficulty can be set dynamically you could even mine higher diff while you had no shares in the window... and lower when you did. (I think on LTC it does this by default).

If you up the difficulty there will be more (of course, on average you'll still end up with a fair payout, just higher variance with bigger quanta).  Since the difficulty can be set dynamically you could even mine higher diff while you had no shares in the window... and lower when you did. (I think on LTC it does this by default).

Since each share you find increases your payout allocation within p2pool's 8640-share window, it should always be beneficial to add more shares, right?

It seems to me that all you would be doing by increasing your difficulty would be to forfeit some potential earnings from weak shares, by throwing those shares away instead of submitting them to the sharechain, unless there's something I'm missing.

Maybe if p2pool is CPU limited, or you're running remote miners that are network-limited between them and p2pool, and you have so many miners that you're constantly spamming p2pool with 1-difficulty shares, that might make a difference.  In that case, wouldn't it just be better to voluntarily increase your difficulty to something that is still well below the minimum required for a valid share (perhaps a difficulty of 1000 or so), which would cut down traffic dramatically from your miners, but still allow you to claim every share in the sharechain that you are entitled to?  Or, am I missing something here?

Which, for a low rate, low payout miner is what increasing your difficulty will accomplish.  When you are averaging near just a few shares in the window there will be some blocks when you just don't have any shares in the window. You will get paid more for the higher difficulty shares.  It will reduce your bandwidth usage if you are putting out a lot of hash power.

Think of the difficulty as the number of difficulty 1 shares you are submitting at the same time, if that helps. If someone submits 10 shares of difficulty 2, and someone else submits a single share of difficulty 20, they have the same score. They have both submitted 20 difficulty 1 shares worth of work.

The reason for increasing the difficulty on the miner's side is to reduce the bandwidth being used by reporting shares and server load on the pool. It won't hurt your income at all. A large enough ASIC could submit thousands of difficulty 1 shares per minute which is a huge waste of resources.

In other words, the "value" of a share is not fixed.  It's based on the target difficulty for that share relative to the target difficulties of all the other shares that make up that block.  In other words, if you opt-in to a difficulty that is 2x as high, you get paid 2x as much for that share.
