if you have, say, better than 90% accuracy in reporting spam or rules violations then you will receive a merit for each new report submitted (as long as it is accurate, of course).
Merit farmers will create a few thousand sockpuppet accounts, create multiple spam with each sockpuppet account, and then use their main account to report all their own sockpuppet spam. Voila, instant 1000 merit. Why instant 1000 merits?

And how is this any different from what is going on now, especially in the foreign language subforums, where there appears to be big ol' circle jerks of meriting?

Are you reporting the instances of this behavior to the moderators? When it can be identified that merit farming and other merit abuse is occurring, accounts get banned, but there are far too many posts on bitcointalk for moderators to catch EVERY instance on their own. They rely on users to use the "Report to Moderator" link to quickly identify misbehavior.

Amazing ideas about how to beg for merits, Sir. I know you are simply trolling, but this one will never happen (1000 merits immediately ) I didn't ever think I would see Danny Hamilton called a "troll" in this forum. Danny is one of the most helpful and well informed posters here. Lob cmt - you need to get away from the bounty scamming boards, and visit the more serious Bitcoin boards. I put you on ignore for your comment about Danny.

LOL He’s right though, any activity assigned to receiving merit, other than post quality, opens the system up to being gamed.

I fear we are forking this thread a bit here. I'll try and bring it back to the topic at hand... If I create a thread where I ask Dr. Who related trivia questions and award merit for intelligent, well thought out, correct answers, would that be considered merit farming (since it isn't about bitcoin or crypto at all)?

1) Self-Custody is a right. Resist being labelled as: "non-custodial" or "un-hosted." 2) ESG, KYC & AML are attack-vectors on Bitcoin to be avoided or minimized. 3) How much alt (shit)coin diversification is necessary? if you are into Bitcoin, then 0%......if you cannot control your gambling, then perhaps limit your alt(shit)coin exposure to less than 10% of your bitcoin size...Put BTC here: bc1q49wt0ddnj07wzzp6z7affw9ven7fztyhevqu9k

I don't believe that merit should be offered as a direct reward for anything. It should be something that is awarded during the normal course of forum activity in my opinion.

One thing i may propose is to add a number of merit Sources for each local forum, obviously in relation with the number of members, for a simple reason: non english-native speakers have way less possibilities to upgrade their ranks. I thought of this considering the fact that the italian forum awards so little merit, the majority is concentrated in English part of the forum and in few other local ones. This is something that i hope may be taken into account. I can write a couple of words in english, but i'm not as experienced as some others, and non native speakers are at disadvantage. However this is just a consideration from a normal user. Let me know what you think. I'll continue to follow this thread as it seems the most active and focused on the subject.

Danny you saw this discussion upthread, right? It would seem topical for you to clarify your point of view about that recent discussion, no? Didn't seem worth it to bother writing it up... Take a look at all the red feedback I've got from those that are angry I tagged them as untrustworthy. If I wrote up a history on every one of them it would be a waste of time and I'd have less time available for interesting participation in the forum. However, since you asked, I went ahead and put this together: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3038959.0

Good thing I checked before creating the thread Was just trying to find a way to tie the Dr. Who discussion back into an on topic merit discussion

I don't think there is a problem. I believe that the "Recent merit sent" section (from /index.php?action=merit) only shows merits sent in the last month. Today is February 28 and my page only shows my merits sent until January 29 while I have some from January 28 that can be seen in the "Sent in the last 120 days" section (from /index.php?action=merit;u=557798). So ~1 month for the "Recent merit sent" and 120 days for the "Sent in the last 120 days".

I had noticed those two different pages too, recently, and I wished that there was a better way to toggle through those kinds of settings. One shows the merit sent/received in the past 30 and the other shows the merit sent/received in the past 120 days. I don't know why it is set up that way, but like I mentioned, I wished there were tabs that would allow the ability to toggle between different time periods such as 30 days and 120 days and maybe some other select time period options.

Hey guys,
I just saw my activity jump up for no reason after making my last post today.
I read somewhere that you only get 14 points max of activity per 14 days. But I somehow got 28 points on my first 2 days of being a member. It was so weird, but at the same time... I was posting volumes in one post.
Then I started posting 4-liners because posting pages in one post got kind of energy-consuming. And that's when my activity got capped at 28 -- I noticed that even if I posted a really long, thoughtful post, my activity didn't go up. All because I posted small posts.
So I think the new theory is that you get activity points based on your posts rather than frequency of posts.
I think the system does a weighing of sorts. Like if you start off posting really long posts, the system won't cap your activity.
And then if you start posting shorter posts, the system cap comes into play because the system thinks you're just trying to farm points.
But it looks like when I started posting again after my 14 days were up, I got a jump in activity, at exactly +14 points.
I'm not sure if that happens to other people, but maybe that's the system weighing my voluminous posts within the 14 days that weren't credited as activity.
Anyway, just my 2 cents.

I won't copy it here because it has been copied so many times in the past.

Aaaaaand I just noticed I have enough activity for Member rank! Now, let's see how many months it will take to reach that rank! In the meantime people have built a wall of +Merits on the OP who's an administrator! I spent all one sMerits of mine within 1 week to the 1st person who was kind enough to give me a complete answer on a question I asked! I won't ask for Merit points, no no; I only want more sMerits so I can spread the love! EDIT: The Merits wall disappeared from the OP, how.... am I seeing things?

It's not hard to get merit points, man. If I got 4 within 14 days. You can get more... All you have to do is write like 2 pages on a topic you know about when the opportuinity rises.

hey kuffy I saw it. it looks like I was able to get 28 points because I signed up on the day of the fortnight thingy schedule.... so it had nothing to do with my posts LOL. So given that, does that mean if I make a new account on 3/12 and post a storm of a storm of a storm of a storm. Then by 3/14 I'll have 28 points? XD That's like so loophole'ish
