Maybe it could be worthwhile to use the cpu to mine litecoins -and post-ASICs even gpus.
Someone is already gpu-mining litecoins. They say it's profitable.

Yeah, as long as someone is buying litecoins. I may add support for it later, but ASIC is most important right now.

You might want to update the "Approx. mint speed" cause since the blockreward halfing it is off by about 100%.

BitMinter client v1.3.1beta is ready for testing.

Small update this time. Please let me know whether FPGA mining still runs well (BFL and Icarus). If you have the time it would also be interesting to hear if CPU usage is lower than with v1.3.0, especially with BFL FPGAs.

New since 1.3.0:
  • Adjust 'BTC per day' display according to reward halving
  • Reduced CPU usage for FPGA mining
  • Recognize GTX 670 and 680 GPUs

Please check it out:

I seem to lose performance on my BFL Single with 1.3.1beta (around 70Mhps). Can't say about the CPU usage jumps to much to say (current version and beta)

Some other BFL users are getting the same speed with 1.3.1beta as they do with 1.3.0. Can you check this again? Is it constant at 70 Mhps lower than with v1.3.0?

Hasnt been running long but looks like from 70-95MH/s slower for me. CPU is the same as before, roughly 14%

Let me know if you need to know what worker I am on.

eta: added a 7970 and it performed as normal

BitMinter mining pool has it's own custom miner.

Features of the BitMinter miner:
  • FAST - top notch GPU and FPGA speeds
  • Easy to use good-looking GUI
  • Zero installation(!)
  • Long polling, to reduce stale work
  • Mine on OpenCL-compatible GPUs or FPGAs (BFL and Icarus supported)
  • Supports Windows, Linux and Mac OS X

No need to manually install the miner, and certainly no need to build/compile the miner yourself.

Try it now:
  • 1. Fill in the pool sign-up form at http://bitminter.com/signup
  • 2. Start the miner with "engine start" here or on our website (Java required)
  • 3. Experience mining the way it should be

What is the minimum hashes to earn 1 btc per day? Mine's about 220 Khps and I can earn 0.1 mBTC/day (xD)

Note that there is a bug in the current BitMinter client versions. They don't take into consideration the reward halving and show twice the daily BTC. This has been corrected in the beta. This should be coming out of beta soon. I'm just busy with something else at the moment.

Easy way to check average income and whether mining is profitable: google "bitcoin calculator" .. there are some pretty nice ones Smiley

BitMinter client v1.3.1beta2 is ready for testing.

The first beta tried to reduce CPU usage when mining on BFL FPGAs, but it gave a lower hashrate if you mined on Windows. Most of all with beta2 I would like to know how the hashrate and CPU usage compares to v1.3.0 when mining on different operating systems. So please test that if you have the opportunity!

New since beta1:
  • Attempt to fix slowdown in beta1 when BFL mining on Windows
  • Add workaround for SecurityException bug in some Java 7 releases. If you were running Java 7 but not the latest release then you may have experienced the client suddenly ceasing to mine. This will fix that. Also you could fix it by upgrading to the latest update release of Java 7. If you are on Java 6 don't worry about it.
  • Fixed window being visible in taskbar when starting minimized in systray
  • Suppress spammy "batch acquisition of 0 triggers" log messages

Please check it out:

pressing button doesnt do anything. Have to exit client and start it again (only way to get it working). Have had same thing couple of times under win 8 beta comp. This one was win 7. What version it has dont know right now, prolly the one that was out 3 months ago Cheesy Can check if needed.

That sounds like the Java bug I added a workaround for in the new beta. You may want to upgrade your java to the latest release to make sure it won't happen again.

Also, I need more feedback from BFL miners before I can release 1.3.1. Hint, hint owners of BFL FPGAs Smiley

Quote above from pool thread.

I am running the new beta 1.3.1beta2 on a 7970 and bfl single. Just turned it up but so far so good. Is a couple mhash faster too; previously I was getting 8 mhash under the driver I ran (so 808mhash firmware would run at 800 on bitminter) but now it is 5-6 mhash less instead of 8. The 7970 seems faster too but could be my imagination as gpu tends to fluctuate quite a bit more than the fpga.

Windows 7 64 bit running latest java 7 update 11

Will let you know if I have any issues and post this on your software thread.

Bitminter Throttles at 350MH/s on my 5850 cypress, how do I exceed this limit?

5850s can get upto 400MH/s but takes a lot of working and As others advised you would need to adjust and overclock. Set your Engine to 895 and ram frequency to 300 that's if your card will goto it if its working fine try engine to 900. All depends on the card also drivers and also temps and many other factors. You could always try cgminer and program that to overclock in it and see if any speed differences

Got a question... a friend who is running Bitminter ran into trouble after his power supply died.  He replaced the power supply, Windows ran checkdisk upon startup, and then BitMinter would fail to start, just stuck at this screen:

I downloaded a fresh copy of the "launch" app from Bitminter, no change.  I installed the latest java (7.11) overtop the version that was installed (7.10).  No change.  I uninstalled java and installed the latest version, no change.

What else should I try?

I watched the client on stats mode for awhile, it turns out I am getting speeds above 350MH/s. It goes up to about 600Mh/s for about 1 second then a red light appears on the speedometer and the hash rate drops down to 320MH/s before returning to 350MH/s, stays at 350MH/s for the next 5 minutes then repeats the cycle. Why?Huh

Is this on GPU or FPGA?

The red light just flashes when your hashrate goes more than 10% above the hashrate expected from the particular device. Nothing to worry about (except burning out the GPU if you overclock too much).

Got a question... a friend who is running Bitminter ran into trouble after his power supply died.  He replaced the power supply, Windows ran checkdisk upon startup, and then BitMinter would fail to start, just stuck at this screen:

It's usually one of two things causing this problem.

Upgrading Java, at least from version 6 to version 7, sometimes breaks something and you need to clear out the java temporary files. The next time you start the app after that it will download everything anew and it works. How to clear java temporary files: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/plugin_cache.xml

The other frequent cause of this is antivirus software. Sometimes they like to inspect file transfers. Sometimes they do that and accidentally break file transfers so that Java web start isn't able to finish downloading the files. I think this is usually AVG antivirus. But it may be that other antivirus programs can do this too. Try whitelisting the javaws.exe program or turning off file transfer inspection. Consider the security implications of what solution you use. Turning antivirus completely off on a Windows computer is not recommended.
