To all the 20 year olds out there, please realise these important facts:

A return of 7% means a doubling of your investment over 10 years. This might not seem like much but is way better than anything in the old money world.

People who can consistently earn above 7% have special information not available to public generally. That's why Raj Rajaratnam went to prison.

If you can get a sustainable 10% return on your investment per year, you are doing out of this world well.

Please note that human productivity growth has only been averaging 2% per year for the last 200 years.

Asset growth increases of more than 5% per year over the last two decades were caused by excessive debt-money issuances by the banks and cannot be sustained.

TLDR: Should background mixing be opt-out so Darkcoin can still function as a full-fledged cryptocurrency even while providing anonymous transactions?

It's probably going to be an option, because you need your 1000 DRK's on a masternode to stay where they are for example.

Maybe when you create an address in the wallet for receiving, there could be an option to exclude that address from anonymization?

I don't think IP obfuscation should be of concern right now. It is near trivial to do by either using Tor/I2P themselves or by propagating transactions using a Tor-like onion-routing via the masternode network. Which means that only masternodes will propagate transactions.

I'd actually like the latter quite a lot. I'll think about it some more.

Apparently I2P in it's current implementation is not optimal, because it is a "low-latency Chaum mix network", and those are susceptible to timing analysis, whereas high-latency mix networks aren't. Even a few seconds delay could be enough:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=557732.msg7797380#msg7797380

I2P supports low-latency too and the traffic is mixed, so that means the network can be popular because most people want low-latency and low anonymity.

You don't use high-latency networks for anything that needs to be interactive, e.g. web browsing and chat. So those will never be very anonymous, unless you accept them being very slow and non-interactive. But for sending a transaction or PoW solution, a few seconds delay in order to get very high confidence of anonymity is a correct tradeoff. Note high-latency allows to mix up the transactions that come into a peer before they are routed back out, and this messes up timing-based statistical analysis that has been shown to break anonymity in mix-nets like Tor (and perhaps I2P).

Code Review

Kristov Atlas has agreed to be the first to review the Darksend code. Kristov will be evaluating anonymity and overall design of our technology and will report his findings publicly. We’ll be sending the code to him soon and we anticipate that we will hear back from Kristov by the end of the month.

https://darkcointalk.org/threads/development-updates-july-15th.1788/

Kristov is but one of the recognised crypto figures that has been approached by members of this community.

Asking respected professionals to carry out peer reviews of the code and the project shows a different level of professionalism and confidence in the project.

LoL. You should try holding NxT.

I've been a holder for 6 months now and seen the price cycle through 300% changes about 4 times, with weeks and months between major announcements sometimes. It's like being aircrew where their ears stop feeling the pressure change due to being elasticated from the 6-times-a-day cycles of climb to cruise altitude and descent to landing.

Sometimes you've just got to make up your mind whether you like something or not instead of sitting like a lapdog with its tongue on the floor in front of trading charts. Nothing wrong with doing that in principle (See Giftencounter) but you can't afford to spend much time doing anything else  Wink

Believe me, I've tried to get "interested" in alternative investments in the X--Coin sector. I've been in and out of them all but I believe this to be the most industrial of them by far. The reason the devs don't "babysit" the price is because they're not a bunch of opportunists jumping on a bandwagon, rather have hitherto set the agenda, consistently delivered solid and meaningful innovations and responded effectively to problems all throughout the coin's life so I expect they'll continue to do so.
